Devin Henri 1879 1973
[.]". Vice-amiral. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

MILNE, A. A.
London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1928. London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1928. Octavo. Original pink cloth, spine lettered in gilt, vignette in gilt to front cover within single gilt rule border, illustrated endpapers, top edge gilt. With the dust jacket. Frontispiece and illustrations in the text by E. H. Shepard, of which 7 are full-page. Ownership inscription to recto of illustrated frontispiece. Foot of covers slightly faded, extremities lightly rubbed. A very good copy in the slightly nicked jacket, loss to spine ends, dark spots to panels, 11 mm closed tear to head of front panel. First edition, first impression. Milne began planning his final Pooh book in 1927. Three years of intense publicity were taking their toll on the family, and Milne longed to return full-time to adult literature, telling his brother that "after one more Pooh book I must think of something else. In fact, it's time I tried a novel" (Thwaite p. 328). Christopher Robin was growing up, soon to leave for boarding school, and The House at Pooh Corner would be a farewell. But first there was an introduction to be made. Milne had bought his son a stuffed tiger, "Tigger", and told Shepard that he was longing to see the illustrations for this new character, who would become one of the author's most popular creations. Published on 11 October 1928 in an edition of 75,000 regular trade copies, The House at Pooh Corner was received by critics with a delight tinged by sadness. "The Times Literary Supplement congratulated Milne on avoiding 'the temptation to repeat his successful formula mechanically', though it was ' … [Click Below for Full Description]

Eugene Jolas, Editor
Paris: Transition, 1928. Transition, Paris, 1928. 6.5"x9". No. 13. uncut copy of literary review in original transparent protective wraps, produced in Paris in the twenties. Transition was an experimental literary journal that featured surrealist, expressionist, and Dada art and artists. Founded in 1927 by Paris-based poet Eugene Jolas, it was originally intended to serve as an outlet for experimental poetry, but gradually expanded to incorporate contributions from sculptors, photographers, writers, civil rights activists, critics, and cartoonists. The magazine ran through the spring of 1938, with a total of 27 issues published. Sylvia Beach in her book "Shakespeare and Company," agent for the Journal, refers to 'Transition' as follows : "All the best Anglo-Saxon and European work of the period appeared in it, much of it for the first time. Of all the reviews I came in contact with, 'Transition' was the most vital, the longest-lived, and the review that I felt was most intelligently devoted to the interests of new writing." Contributors to this issue include: James Joyce, William Carlos Williams, Gertrude Stein, with cover by Picasso and photo reproductions of Picasso works and photos by Man Ray, On deckle-eged pulp paper except for illustration pages, & with blue cover title; 277 pages + advertisements & contents.

Artur Wolf, Wien, 1928. 115 S. Etwas größerer Orig.-Leinenband. Mit eigenhändiger Widmung des Autors in Bleistift: "Vom Verfasser überreicht. Wien 16. Mai 36 F. v. Herzmanovsky-Orlando I. Opering [sic!] 5." Weiner, Richard
Aventinum, Prague, 1928. Octavo (19.3 × 12.3 cm). Original printed wrappers; 159, [5] pp. Signed and inscribed by Weiner on the half title. Wrappers very lightly sun-toned and creased; still a highly attractive copy, very good or better. Second edition of Weiner's first book of prose, considered to be the first work of Czech literature inspired by modern warfare and the horrors of World War I. Weiner (1884-1937) was a Czech Jew who began his journalistic and literary career after moving to Paris in 1912, but happened to witness the outbreak of the War while in Prague. A recent article notes that Weiner had "intimate knowledge of shell-shock in its most literal form: he saw active service in Bosnia in 1912 and in Serbia in 1914. Indeed, his second tour of duty ended in a nervous breakdown, and in early 1915 he returned to Prague" (Peter Zusi, "States of Shock: Kafka and Richard Weiner," 135). Weiner published both poetry and prose throughout the 1910-20s, in a stylistically complex, psychologically probing, and fundamentally abstract style that has invited comparisons to Franz Kafka since at least the 1930s. While his early work is marked by expressionism, Weiner became influenced by surrealism in the late 1920s, after once again settling in Paris. Evidently some passages of Litice were too risque for the censor, who cut entire paragraphs, and the 1916 first edition was printed with visual omissions; this second edition first presented the complete text. Weiner is still little known outside the Czech Republic, although recent years have seen more attention, following the tra … [Click Below for Full Description]

FOOTE, Arthur 1853-1937
1928. An American composer, organist, pianist and teacher, "in his finest works Foote was a memorable composer. His style, firmly placed in the Romantic tradition, is characterized by lyrical melodies, expressive phrasing, and clear formal structure. He excelled in writing for strings and achieved particular popularity in his lifetime with the Suite in E major op.63 and A Night Piece for flute and strings. Of his works for full orchestra, the Four Character Pieces after the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám op.48 is noteworthy for its colourful instrumental writing. His strong melodic gift is exemplified in such songs as I'm wearing awa' and An Irish Folk Song... Foote was highly regarded as a pedagogue, earning his livelihood mainly from private piano instruction." Wilma Reid Cipolla in Grove Music Online.. 1 page. Quarto. Dated Ridge Avenue, Newton Centre, Mass., Feb. 4, 1928 at head.To a Miss Warnell, apologizing for not being able to join her at a luncheon.Very slightly soiled; creased at folds.

Framed & glazed, 76 x 77cm.Herbert Norris, 1875?-1950, was an occasional actor, costume designer and consultant who worked in the theatre and on films as well as pageants, and as advisor to Madame Tussauds. These designs, dated 1828, are of the period of the musical Song of the Sea staged at His Majesty's Theatre in October 1928 based on the story of Emma Hamilton.
