RÉGNY, Jane.
Paris: G. Govone, 1928. Square octavo, 16 pp. Original pale brown wrappers lettered in red. Covers lightly soiled and showing some signs of handling, internally clean and unopened. Colour pochoir folding frontispiece and one plate from designs by Mariette Lydis; title page and colophon printed in red and black. First and limited edition, number 20 of 1, 000 copies printed for the friends of Jane Régny, this for "La Comtesse de Montgomery", presumably Lady Beatrice Eleanor Paget (1883-1973), 12th countess of Montgomery; from a total edition of 1, 200, ordinary copies issued with an uncoloured frontispiece. This is an attractive astrological plaquette combining the talents of tennis star-turned- fashion designer Balouzet Tillard de Tigny, known as Jane Régny - who opened a couture house dedicated to sports and travel fashion - and illustrator Mariette Lydis, who at this time was establishing her reputation as a fashionable illustrator and "began another affair with the art publisher of Les Presses de l'Hotel Sagonne, Comte Giuseppe Govone" (Jack Zipes in Béla Balázs, The Cloak of Dreams: Chinese Fairy Tales, Princeton UP 2010, p. 59). Conspicuously uncommon: not located in British and Irish institutional libraries, with OCLC citing BnF, Koninklijke Bibliotheek and Miami only. [Attributes: First Edition]

Bergamo: Instituto Italiano d’Arti Grafice. Chromolithography on card with printed text verso (Very Good, two original vertical folds, old repaired tears in folds on the back, verso slightly dusty with old annotations, edges slightly scuffed) 69 x 52 cm (27.2 x 20.4 inches). A decorative large lithographed game of goose shows a map of the world, surrounded by four portraits, representing inhabitants of different parts of the orbit, and logos with names of products of the chocolate firm Talmone-Unica, who issued this map as an advertisement. The map was printed in 1928 under Fascist Italy. Talmone-Unica was a chocolate and cacao factory, founded by Michele Talmone in Torino in 1850. Since the beginning of the 20th century the firm was known for its modern advertisements in forms of art-nouveau posters, tin boxes and other printed media. This map of the world was printed one year before the seat of the firm was transferred to France, leaving the Torino chocolate market to the Venchi-Unica company.

Wonderground Map of London by MacDonald Gill Designed as an advertising poster then issued to the public it was reissued in 1923 I am told and then 1928 differing from the orignal by the addition of greyhounds at the Racetrack...sold folded many ended upon walls and is extremely rare today and difficult to check..others say the 1928 is the first reissue or second edition. This came from a ramshackle house clearance..paper and books hoarded all over the place earliest 1702 right through to the Second World War and ending in the father and son most likely ..a large period house near Harwich. The map neatly folded and wrapped apparently never used...very bright and tears no fold splits no marks save a small rub to left margin...up with the best of them and a rare find especially in the condition... Due to their high charges PayPal will not be accepted for the item....buyers close toLondon can view items by arrangement to satisfy themselves on condition and description.

Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada
Publisher not identified / Printed at Ariam Press 1927/1928, 54 Canal Street, New York, New York. 276 x 200 mm. 223, [1] pages. Printed on high quality paper. No copy listed in WorldCat. Union of Orthodox Rabbis. Not to be confused with Agudath Israel of America (Agudas Yisroel) or the Orthodox Union (Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America). The Union of Orthodox Rabbis of the United States and Canada (UOR), often called by its Hebrew name, Agudat Harabanim or Agudas Harrabonim ("union of rabbis"), was established in 1901/1902 in the United States and is among the oldest organizations of Orthodox rabbis which could be described as having a Haredi worldview. It had been for many years the principal group for such rabbis, though in recent years it has lost much of its former membership and influence. It was formed in direct consequence to Solomon Schechter's takeover of the formerly-Orthodox Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Within 100 days of Schechter's appointment, the Union formed and issued a statement critical of JTS and Schechter. They rejected any future graduate of JTSA. Agudath Harabonim was also an answer to the Orthodox Union (OU), which had formed five years earlier. There were two distinct groups within the American Orthodox rabbinate: the Europeans and the American-born. The Americans were English-speakers, often had a secular education, and competed with Reform (and later Conservative) movements for the heart of the modern American Jew. European transplants were often Yiddish-speaking with limited English skills, trained exclusively in rabbini … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zella Armstrong & Janie French
King Printing Company, Bristol TN. FIRST EDITION, PRINTED 1928, "FROM THE PRESS OF THE KING PRINTING COMPANY BRISTOL, TENNESSEE". In my humble opinion, this copy is in very good condition as it is 90 years old! It has been saved from the "usual library wear" so common to many antique books as it was previously owned by an individual versus a lending library. DO NOT MISS THIS AWESOME OPPORTUNITY TO OWN A FIRST EDITION PRINTING (COPYRIGHT 1928) of the book entitled "NOTABLE SOUTHERN FAMILIES, THE CROCKETT FAMILY and CONNECTING LINES, VOLUME V". This book is Volume V (five) of the set of books entitled "Notable Southern Families" as written by the co-authors Ms. Janie Preston Collup French and Ms. Zella Armstrong. Volume Five is a genealogical history of The Crockett Family, and yes, the direct family history of "Mr. Davey Crockett" of Alamo Fame is included! IN ADDITION, THIS COPY IS INSCRIBED ON THE FRONT ENDPAPER WITH NAME AND ADDRESS OF A MEMBER OF THE CROCKETT FAMILY - A MS. SALLY CROCKETT OF PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE! There are NO DOG-EARED PAGES; AND ABSOLUTELY NO INK UNDERLINING OR HIGH-LIGHTING HAS BEEN DONE TO THESE PRECIOUS PAGES! There is a bit of "shading" on the inside covers where for years the previous owner apparently had stored a letter or other papers. The book contains 611 (six hundred and eleven) deckle-edged pages of glorious genealogical information regarding "the Crockett Family & Connecting Lines". The book was copyrighted in 1928, and was printed by "The Press of the King Printing Company, Bristol, Tennessee". TO WHET YOUR APPETITE: Chapter XI (elev … [Click Below for Full Description]

James Joyce
Description: Signed James Joyce - Anna Livia Plurabelle Book 1928 #640/800 About Item: Up for sale, Signed James Joyce - Anna Livia Plurabelle Book 1928 #640/800. This book is in good condition. The gilt lettering and decoration to the spine and front cover is bright. There is some light rubbing to the outside boards. There are no bookplates, signatures or markings of any kind in the book. The pages are clean and free of any foxing. This is the limited edition #640 of 800 copies signed by James Joyce. About the Author: James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (1882 - 1941) was an Irish expatriate author of the 20th century. He is known for his landmark novel Ulysses (1922) and its controversial successor Finnegans Wake (1939), as well as the short story collection Dubliners (1914) and the semi-autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). Although he spent most of his adult life outside Ireland, Joyce's psychological and fictional universe is firmly rooted in his native Dublin, the city which provides the settings and much of the subject matter for all his fiction. In particular, his tempestuous early relationship with the Irish Roman Catholic Church is reflected through a similar inner conflict in his recurrent alter ego Stephen Dedalus. As the result of his minute attentiveness to a personal locale and his self-imposed exile and influence throughout Europe, notably in Paris, Joyce paradoxically became one of the most cosmopolitan yet one of the most regionally focused of all the English language writers of his time. Limericks.) [later MS title on fly-leaf] THE BOOK OF LIMERICKS.
circa. a feint ruled album with 230 typed limericks on slips of paper pasted onto the pages, juxtaposed above with cut out steel-engraved illustrations, pp. 230, the last leaf with a needle (sharp, and a little rusted) pinned to it, 4to, contemporary/original red linen backed marbled boards, spine weakening (largely due to the increase of bulk, thanks to the additions). The limericks here collected are of the type that Don Marquis identifies as LIMERICKS. The chief glory of this collection, beyond the lubricity of the lyrics themselves, is their extremely clever juxtaposition with melodramatic illustrations from Penny Dreadfuls: they may be said to lift the lid on Victorian prudery and hypocrisy. We have not identified any particular publications, but some examples are signed by such artists as Crowquill, Nicholson, and John Swain. The collection is datable to about 1928. A few appear in Norman Douglas's anthology, and others in Gershorn Legman's anthology of 1953, where commensurate dates are assigned. Contemporary references to Freud, Stopes, and a Seven Horse Austin, reinforce this dating. The one concerning Freud was composed by Philip Hestletine, and was published in The Weekend Book in 1927: here, the last word is 'phalluses' rather than the coy 'fallacies' in Legman. About a quarter of the limericks here are anthologised by Legman, but many are not, so there are probably some original.

Charles Blair Macdonald
Condition: Good. Scotland's Gift: Golf by Charles Blair Macdonald First edition book published in 1928 Small scuff mark on the binding otherwise in good condition. As one reviewer wrote about this book: "Although I don't know that I could define "serious golfer" off hand, you might fit in that category if: You have ever played at the National Golf Links of America Want to know how the USGA came to be Wonder what golf was like in the late 19th century in the US Dream of building your own course, but have no clue what "good design" is Personally, I fit into the last slot. Most of us play rounds or look at yardage books and try to figure out why one course is on the top 100 of every magazine, and another never seems to see the light of day in print. For people like this, we need books on golf architecture. This book contains, arguably, one of the most concise takes on the subject. It would be misleading to say that architecture is the only matter covered. Actually, it only accounts for about a quarter of the volume in total. The rest is the personal narrative of Macdonald as the pioneer of golf in America, and as one of the founders of the USGA. It also discusses early tournaments in the US, which may be of interest to history buffs. Much of this is probably required knowledge to have any sort of intelligent discussion on golf history, and is worth a quick read at the least. Given that Macdonald was involved with the USGA for the decades after its inception, he also was there to witness the begining of problems that still plague the game today. Namely, the question of equipmen … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lanston Monotype Corporation, London, 1928. 7 magnificent David Jones copper engravings as headpieces to each fable. Printed in red and black in New Hellenic Greek type by Victor Scholderer. Stated as being one of 150 copies - but actually most probably one of 30. 8vo., original maroon cloth, title in gilt on spine, spine faded, top edge mildly bumped, internally perfect. David Jones's Aesop has been known as the black tulip of David Jones books. The rarity of this book is legendary. Douglas Cleverdon's bibliography of David Jones (1981) states that copies exist with the edition number of 150 being corrected in Stanley Morison's hand to 30 copies. The original plates were lost when Stanley Morison's flat, along with the Monotype office, were destroyed during a wartime bombing raid in 1941. Printed in Greek with an English translation at the end by Walter Shewring. The book was issued by the Monotype Corporation as a type specimen for their New Hellenic Greek type designed by Victor Scholderer. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
