Charles Blair Macdonald
Condition: Good. Scotland's Gift: Golf by Charles Blair Macdonald First edition book published in 1928 Small scuff mark on the binding otherwise in good condition. As one reviewer wrote about this book: "Although I don't know that I could define "serious golfer" off hand, you might fit in that category if: You have ever played at the National Golf Links of America Want to know how the USGA came to be Wonder what golf was like in the late 19th century in the US Dream of building your own course, but have no clue what "good design" is Personally, I fit into the last slot. Most of us play rounds or look at yardage books and try to figure out why one course is on the top 100 of every magazine, and another never seems to see the light of day in print. For people like this, we need books on golf architecture. This book contains, arguably, one of the most concise takes on the subject. It would be misleading to say that architecture is the only matter covered. Actually, it only accounts for about a quarter of the volume in total. The rest is the personal narrative of Macdonald as the pioneer of golf in America, and as one of the founders of the USGA. It also discusses early tournaments in the US, which may be of interest to history buffs. Much of this is probably required knowledge to have any sort of intelligent discussion on golf history, and is worth a quick read at the least. Given that Macdonald was involved with the USGA for the decades after its inception, he also was there to witness the begining of problems that still plague the game today. Namely, the question of equipmen … [Click Below for Full Description]

GILL, Macdonald
[London,: Waterlow & Sons, 1928]. [London,: Waterlow & Sons,, 1928].. Chromolithograph map, mounted on linen on original rollers. Gill's rare poster map advertising the bus services from London to the Home Counties. The text around the map reads: “Far flung are our bus routes, they here are displayed. They mean nought to you! We are not dismayed. There are thousands of citizens who love the fresh air. Hundreds not misers will pay debonair. But they must remember to clear their waste paper. Dry bottles and what not at the end of their caper. So there!” Leslie MacDonald Gill (1884- 1947) was a noted graphic designer, cartographer, artist and architect. Born in Brighton, he was the younger brother of Eric Gill, one of the leading figures of the Arts and Crafts movement. In 1914 his "Wonderground Map", commissioned by Frank Pick, and hung at every station, helped to save the London Underground by presenting an accurate map which also had a humorous side in cartoon style. Produced in poster form, it was also made available for sale to members of the public and proved to be very popular. Elder brother Eric, who at that time was engaged in a commission for Westminster Cathedral, was included at the bottom of the map. He also designed of the standard upper case lettering used on headstones and war memorials by the Imperial War Graves Commission. But it is perhaps his illustrated maps for which he is most well known. These maps have featured in a series of exhibitions including Magnificent Maps exhibition in 2010 at the British Library, an exhibition MacDonald Gill, Out of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

The pages are clean and free of any foxing. This is the limited edition #640 of 800 copies signed by James Joyce. About the Author: James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (1882 - 1941) was an Irish expatriate author of the 20th century. He is known for his landmark novel Ulysses (1922) and its controversial successor Finnegans Wake (1939), as well as the short story collection Dubliners (1914) and the semi-autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). Although he spent most of his adult life outside Ireland, Joyce's psychological and fictional universe is firmly rooted in his native Dublin, the city which provides the settings and much of the subject matter for all his fiction. In particular, his tempestuous early relationship with the Irish Roman Catholic Church is reflected through a similar inner conflict in his recurrent alter ego Stephen Dedalus. As the result of his minute attentiveness to a personal locale and his self-imposed exile and influence throughout Europe, notably in Paris, Joyce paradoxically became one of the most cosmopolitan yet one of the most regionally focused of all the English language writers of his time. First and only edition. One of 600 copies. An extremely rare provincial edition. This is the first book on wooden classicist architecture of Kaluga and the first book on wooden Empire style architecture, part of the unique Russian architectural phenomenon. At the end of the 18th - the beginning of the 19th century classicism became widespread not only in the capital, but also in provincial towns and manors. The situation in Russia after the Napoleonic invasion gave impetus to the construction of wooden houses of various purposes. Among them, one story mansions are particularly beautiful and even adorable in their simple wooden decoration. Skill serf architects manifested in the construction of wooden buildings with elements inherent to stone buildings: classical porticos, elegant moldings and carved details, columns. In the central Russia there was enough wood for building, therefore wooden buildings in the style of classicism began to appear, whole ensembles of wooden buildings were created. It was a new style, which entered the history of architecture as Russian wooden classicism, similar to which there is no in Europe. This book was written by a known Kaluga local historian Sergei Bessonov. Here he gathered information on roots of wooden Empire style in Russia, history and photographs or illustrations of Kaluga buildings. With many black and white photographs of productions and set designs. This prospectus is dedicated to the summer tour of 1928 of the Moscow Kamerny Theatre. It includes portraits of the company including Alexander Tairov and Alisa Koonen, route (Baku, Kiev, Leningrad and others) and repertoire. Articles from theatre magazines and amazing and rare stage photographs are provided for Desire under the Elms, The Storm by Ostrovsky, Rozita, Antigone, Adrienna Lekuvrer, Day and Night, Girofle-Giroflia, Sirokko. The Kamerny Theatre in Moscow for the 35 years, this small, intimate experimental theatre became «recognized as a major force in Russian theatre» getting awards in different European countries at salons and exhibitions. For three decades the theater survived the effects of the Russian Revolution by remaining unpolitical, instead adopting a post-revolutionary romantic idealism and relying heavily on classical material from the east and west. But in 1928 the Kamerny put on Purple Island by Mikhail Bulgakov, which was a satire that openly mocked the government. So this is the last tour before Tairov and his theatre became ostracized for their experiments. No copies at the Worldcat.

Vladimir Mayakovsky
Moscow. Vladimir Mayakovsky. НО. С. 1928. The cover of A. Rodchenko work Mayakovsky V. НО. С (new verses) M 1928g. 107s. Covers, Reduced format. Cover Rodchenko, good condition On the title page is the owner's record. Vladimir Vladimirovich Mayakovsky (Влади́мир Влади́мирович Маяко́вский; 19 July [O.S. 7 July] 1893 - 14 April 1930) was a Russian Soviet poet, playwright, artist, and actor. During his early, pre-Revolution period leading into 1917, Mayakovsky became renowned as a prominent figure of the Russian Futurist movement, being among the signers of the Futurist manifesto, A Slap in the Face of Public Taste (1913), and authoring poems such as A Cloud in Trousers (1915) and Backbone Flute (1916). Mayakovsky produced a large and diverse body of work during the course of his career: he wrote poems, wrote and directed plays, appeared in films, edited the art journal LEF, and created agitprop posters in support of the Communist Party during the Russian Civil War. Though Mayakovsky's work regularly demonstrated ideological and patriotic support for the ideology of the Communist Party and a strong admiration of Vladimir Lenin, Mayakovsky's relationship with the Soviet state was always complex and often tumultuous. Mayakovsky often found himself engaged in confrontation with the increasing involvement of the Soviet State in cultural censorship and the development of the State doctrine of Socialist realism. Works that contained criticism or satire of aspects of the Soviet system, such as the poem "Talking With the Taxman About Poetry" (1926), and the plays The Bedbug (1929) and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Strachey and Forster were contemporaries for many years, although their two personalities and varying forms of bohemianism clashed: "In some of his letters to mutual friends, Lytton criticized Forster fiercely - his quaint timidity, his old-maidish liberalism. But what he really objected to was having a mirror held up to the more negative features of his own image. 'Excessive paleness is what I think worries me most', he wrote to Leonard Woolf. 'The Taupe [Forster] in his wonderful way I imagine saw this about me, and feeling that he himself verged upon the washed-out, shuddered'" (Holroyd, Lytton Strachey: The New Biography, 2015). Forster and Strachey's letters from 1908 to 1924 are preserved in the British Library. The Eternal Moment is a collection of Forster stories including his extraordinarily prescient "The Machine Stops" (1909), which imagines a blighted world in which the totality of the human race lives within a machine that functions not unlike an all-encompassing Facebook, immediately connecting, and at the same time irrevocably separating, everyone. It has been described as "the first full-scale emergence of the twentieth-century anti-utopia" (Hillegas, The Future as Nigh … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gide, Andre.
Paris: NRF, Librairie Gallimard, [1928]. First edition, inscribed by Gide on the half-title to fellow author, Julien Green: "a Julien Green en temoignage de tres attentive affection, Andre Gide." This is a splendid association copy. Green, a novelist of American parentage who was born in Paris, was a member of the French Academy -- as was Gide. Green converted to Roman Catholicism in 1916 and was often described as a "Catholic novelist" -- a term he rejected. Still, his novels depict the anguish and despair that result from the conflict between man's spiritual and carnal desires. Gide's novels were banned by the Catholic Church. This title, LE RETOUR DU TCHAD, along with VOYAGE AU CONGO was severely critical of French colonization in Africa. 8vo; hansomely bound by H. Alix in 3/4 crushed chestnut brown morocco and marbled paper boards, spine with gilt lettering, marbled endpapers, t.e.g., original wrappers and backstrip bound in, text browned, else fine. Title translates to "Articles and Conversations with the Rebbe from Lubavitch. " Joseph Schneersohn (1880-1950) was an Orthodox rabbi and the sixth Rebbe of the Chabad Lubavitch chasidic movement. "Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, the sixth rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch, was one of the most remarkable Jewish personalities of the twentieth century. In his seventy years, he encountered every conceivable challenge to Jewish life: the persecutions and pogroms of Czarist Russia, Communism's war on Judaism, and melting-pot America's apathy and scorn toward the Torah and its precepts. The Rebbe was unique in that he not only experienced these chapters in Jewish history — as did many of his generation — but that, as a leader of his people, he actually faced them down, often single-handedly, and prevailed. The young Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak, in full-length chassidic garb, was a familiar figure in the receiving rooms of the government officials, ministers, and nobles of Moscow and Petersburg . He demanded the repeal of anti-Jewish decrees, the stopping of pogroms and the cessation of the government's program of forced ‘enlightenment’ of traditional Jewish life" His father appointed him the first executive director of the first Lubavitch Yeshivah; "It was there, in the hamlet of Lubavitch in pre-soviet White Russia, that Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok trained the army of the faithful torchbearers who, under the impos … [Click Below for Full Description]

WOON, Basil
Horace Liveright New York 1928. First Edition. "Rum, roulette and racing; sugar, cigars and senoritas - these are the ingredients of this effervescent picture of what the tourist does in Cuba, what he sees, and what he drinks. First, as to what he drinks. Mr. Woon gives the real recipe of the Daiquiri as given to him by Facundo Bacardi himself, maker of 'the rum that cured a king and pickled a nation'. He tells you that there are seven thousand places in Havana where alcohol is sold, and helpfully lists the names of the best bartenders, and the drinks that made them famous". Illustrated with photographs. Highly sought after cocktail book and Cuba guide. Very Good, (lacking dustjacket), modest or somewhat worse soiling to cloth [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Napoleon Hill
First edition, first printing of the Law of Success, published by Ralston University Press in 1928. Seven out of eight volumes - volume eight is the missing volume. Some general light-to-mild external wear, visible in photos. Ownership signature on front pastedown of volume. Small inkstain to base (near corner) of volume 2 from beginning to page 50. Texts are otherwise unmarked. Bindings are firm, with the first two books feeling slightly looser than the others. A pretty nice set overall unfortunately lacking the 8th and final volume.
