Hammerstein 2nd, Oscar ; Kern, Jerome
New York: T.B. Harms, 1928. Quarto, 268 pages. Original illustrated wrappers, cloth spine. Some minor wear and staining. The scarce first edition of the original Broadway version, published in April 1928, with the title page dated "MCMXXVIII". This edition is the only one that contains the Act II reprise of "Why Do I Love You?" which was replaced with "Dance Away the Night" for the London (and subsequent) productions. "Show Boat" was the first and defining "book musical", a musical play in which the songs and dances were integrated with a serious story. This score was in the library of George and Ira Gershwin, unfortunately without ownership marks.

DUNALLEY, Lord (Henry Cornelius O'Callaghan Pritie)
Jarrolds Publishers London [1928]. First Edition. Youngman Carter dustjacket art. Hubin listed collection of short stories with some crime elements, and a man committed to becoming a sporting gentleman. Very scarce. The front flap reads: "This is a surprisingly good collection of stories by Lord Dunalley a new writer in the field of fiction and it may safely be said that Lord Dunalley will quickly establish himself as a popular novelist. In A Sporting Education, which is the main story in Saddle and Steel, Mr. Keldon, an American who has " made his bit," thinks it time to give up commerce and learn how to become a sportsman and a gentleman. He places himself under the able tuition of Captain Hugh Darley. Though Keldon finds his newly proposed vocation rather more difficult than " hot air merchandising," he tries to learn with an earnest zest, supported by a disarming urbanity, which makes him as lovable a character as Hugh Darley is. This is a sporting novel without a villain. A kindly good humour pervades it from the first to the last chapter and the whole book will appeal to all readers who like a good, clean sporting story told in a pleasant, light vein. Very Good, some discoloration to cloth, soiling to page edges, in rather soiled dustjacket, but otherwise Good, quarter sized chip at upper rear panel. Woolf, Virginia
New York: Crosby Gaige, 1928. Limited first edition, no. 224 of 861 copies on rag paper, signed by the author. Frontispiece and 7 plates. [iv], 336 pp. 8vo. Signed by Woolf. A superb copy in the scarce glassine jacket, signed by Woolf in purple ink on the verso of the half-title. Woolf's singular feminist masterwork was written as "a tribute to [Vita] Sackville-West in the form of a parodic biography of a four-hundred-year old character, who starts out as a young aristocratic man in the Elizabethan age, changes from male to female in the course of the seventeenth century, and winds up as a modern woman driving a motor car in the 'present moment' ... Satirizing both the history of literature and the history of sexuality, Woolf playfully suggests both might be a matter of style" (Encyclopedia of Feminist Literature, p. 277). Kirkpatrick A11. Original cloth, original glassine dust-jacket. A fine, largely unopened copy. Housed in a custom quarter morocco box.
