Mackay, Ulrich Sinclair Peter, RAF pilot (1904-1945).
1928. Oblong 4to. 2 vols., together with Mackay's RAF Pilot Flying Log Book and his RAF Certificate. Contemporary sheepskin and cloth covered boards; ca. 220 photos of Middle Eastern locations and people, including many RAF aerial reconaissance images (as well as a small number of others showing various other subjects). Photos measure ca. 5 x 8 to ca. 16 x 20 cms. An unusual, copious collection of rare original photos, assembled by a British airman who happened to be in the right places at the right time, with a quick eye for telling images and uncommonly good access to restricted documentation. The owner of these albums, the New Zealand-born RAF pilot U. S. Mackay, saw service in Arabia, Iraq and the Gulf area during the late 1920s and early 1930s, at the very time when Abdulaziz Ibn Saud was consolidating his rule over Hejaz and Nejd and striking down the Ikhwan tribal army's insurgency and their incursions into the neighboring British protectorates Iraq and Kuwait, which threatened his rule. In 1932, Ibn Saud would succeed in uniting his territories into a single state, forming the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. - Stationed with the 84B Squadron at Britain's Shaibah Air Base near Basrah, Mackay was one of the limited number of western officers well placed to witness at first hand the events leading up to the founding of the Kingdom. In his first album (whose tone is set by the opening photo on the pastedown, a large print of a Nejd riding camel), some twenty photographs - both private and rare army images - cover the arrival of the defeated Ikhwan leaders Faisal Al Dawish and … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOVECRAFT, H P
Athol, Mass.: W. Paul Cook, 1928. First Edition. Undistributed in 1928 save for a handful of copies bound for private circulation, the first printing consisted of 300 copies. This is one of supposedly 50 sets of unbound sheets sold by Arkham House, although there were certainly at least a few more. This has Currey's state A of the copyright notice. The original 1960 Arkham mailing envelope and cardboard packing is present; this cardboard has offset and browned the top and bottom leaves; a little staining at the top and bottom edges, else an attractive example.

DANIELPOUR, Richard b. 1956
Maya Angelou (1928-2014) was a distinguished American poet, perhaps best-known for her series of autobiographies, the first of which, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), detailing her life up to the age of 17, brought her international acclaim; she went on to write six more. She had the honor of reciting her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton in 1993, the first poet to make such a recitation since Robert Frost at the inauguration of John F. Kennedy in 1961. Angelou was also an important civil rights activist, working with both Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. "Yo-Yo Ma and Emmanuel Ax approached me in 1993 about writing a piece that would be of educational as well as aesthetic value to listeners young and old(er). The idea of creating a series of "portraits" of one heroic woman evolved into a different format when we invited Maya Angelou to create the text for the work. We discussed the idea of several portraits of heroic but nonetheless anonymous women throughout history. Out of the five poems Dr. Angelou wrote, I chose to set four - mostly out of consideration for the length of the work, which I wanted to keep in the twenty-minute range. A rough draft of the four movements/songs was made in December 1997 at Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, and was not resumed until July 1998. It was completed in early August of that year at the Marlboro Music Festival, where I was serving as resident composer for that summer." "The essential questions that came into play in setting these beautiful texts was - who is speaking in each poem; … [Click Below for Full Description]

Rodgers, Richard. (1902-1979)
Exceptional vintage matte-finish 7.25 x 9.25 inch bust portrait boldly signed and inscribed by the important American composer and lyricist of more than 900 songs and 40 Broadway musicals including (with Lorenz Hart) Pal Joey, Jumbo and Babes in Arms. With Oscar Hammerstein, he would contribute to such classics as South Pacific, The King and I and Oklahoma! An uncommonly early image, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "For Cliff, a swell feller, from his friend, Dick." Blindstamped in the lower right by the photographer, Nickolas Muray of New York. Attractively double-matted and framed to an overall size of 13.25 x 15.5. In fine condition. In 1928, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart's "She's My Baby" opened on Broadway, starring Beatrice Lillie and Clifton Webb and the present photograph likely dates from around this time. Between 1913 and 1947, the tall and slender performer Clifton Webb, who sang in a clear, gentle tenor, appeared in 23 Broadway shows, starting with major supporting roles and quickly progressing to leads. He introduced Irving Berlin's "Easter Parade" and George and Ira Gershwin's "I've Got a Crush on You" in Treasure Girl (1928); Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz's "I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan" in The Little Show (1929) and "Louisiana Hayride" in Flying Colors (1932); and Irving Berlin's "Not for All the Rice in China" in As Thousands Cheer (1933). He went on to be known for his Oscar-nominated roles in such films as Laura, The Razor's Edge, and Sitting Pretty. [Attributes: In Dust Jacket]
