John Philip Sousa
Boston: Hale, Cushman & Flint. Fine Book-Near Fine(DJ). Octavo(23cm). Cloth boards; dust jacket; 384pp; illus. Inscribed on Joe E. Ward, Esq. on dedication page: with the best wishes from / John Philip Sousa, dated 1928 and with a brief musical quotation from Sousa's best-known composition "The Stars and stripes Forever". This copy additionally inscribed by Sousa's daughter, Helen Sousa Albert (dated 1958) and by at least fifty members of Sousa's orchestra, with their full addresses, dates of service, and their performing instruments listed in their own hands. Another twenty or so members appear to be listed in a single hand, probably that of Mr. Ward. An unusually fine copy i a bright, crisp example of the scarce pictorial dust jacket, Near Fine. Probably the finest ( and certainly the most interesting) copy of Sousa's autobiography in existence. Joe E. Ward (1894-1971), a professional circus clown and renowned collector of circus memorabilia, also amassed a noteworthy collection of Sousa-related material, most of which now resides in the Interstate Theater Collection at the University of Texas. The current item was purchased at auction from a Ward descendant. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Viteslav Nezval, Jindrich Styrsky
Prague: Odeon, 1928. Quarto 30.5x25 cm., wrappers, 33pp. No. 143 of 220 copies. Six lithographs by Styrsky with tissue guards; typography and book design by Karel Teige. (The Jewish Cemetery) A high point of collaboration between Nezval and Jindrich Štyrský together with Teige. Styrsky’s work here bears little relation to Nezval’s text; he was following the path of Artificialism which he founded with Toyen, free of Devetsil poetist theory. The images here „evoke the dark atmosphere of night, penetrated by clouds of light illuminating abstract motifs of either heavy, enclosed geometric shapes or loose lines running across the entire surface of the work. On some pages of The Jewish Cemetery it is possible to find one of Štyrský’s important „inner“ motifs, which can be described as an endless line.the sweeping drift of events in Nezval’s poems which is driven by the irreconcilable conflict between an urgent erotic desire and early marital life, alternates between dreams and waking.“ (Bydžovská). This copy near fine with offsetting on endpapers from cover flaps, which seems the norm. OCLC finds this in five North American libraries. Signed by Nezval in the front flyleaf. Leonetto CAPPIELLO, illustrator.
Paris: Javal et Bordeaux, 1928. Publisher's file containing 61 proof plates in numerous states, one marked gouache drawing and one copper plate, occasional annotation in pencil. Various sizes (mainly 4to c. 323 × 248 mm). Some duststaining and minor creasing, rust marks to a few corners from paperclips, one sequence of plates with offsetting/browning from interleaved tissue guards. Loose in original grey board portfolio with ties, publisher's label to upper cover. From the books of the late Martin Stone (1946-2016). A fascinating publisher's file containing trial impressions of Cappiello's illustrations engraved by René Lorrain for their edition of La Princesse de Babylone. Each plate appears in several states, single colours and combinations, and some appear in trial states marked up in manuscript. Together with one original copper plate the file provides a very useful record of the many processes required for a complex sequence of colour illustrations for an edition limited to just 40 copies. Notable throughout is the use of the registration pins evident on the copper plate and in the margins of each plate, allowing for absolute precision in the successive impressions. Javal et Bordeaux printed numerous large format illustrated editions at this time, characterised by their superbly realised colour plates reproducing the particular quality of gouache and pastel originals .

WAUGH, Evelyn.
London: Chapman & Hall Ltd, 1928. Octavo. Original red and black "snakeskin" cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom red cloth slipcase. Touch of light foxing to contents; a very good copy in the well-preserved jacket with bright panels, spine somewhat toned, couple of nicks to extremities, old small tape repair to verso. Frontispiece and 4 illustrations in the text, all by Evelyn Waugh. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "with love to Maurice & Jane Marston, from Evelyn Waugh", with Maurice's bookplate to the front pastedown. Maurice Marston, "a modestly paid uncle to the world of books", was a partner at the short-lived publisher Leonard Parsons, the first secretary of the National Book Council, and the founder of the Mark Longman Library. Waugh mentions Jane Marston twice in his diaries, in 1924 (when he visited her for tea) and 1925 (when he accompanied her to the cinema). This is Waugh's first novel, with his own illustrations, and in the dust jacket also designed by him. After the book was rejected for indecency by Duckworth's, the publisher of his earlier biography of Rossetti, Waugh offered the manuscript to Chapman & Hall, but he did so while his father, who was the managing director of the firm, was away on holiday. The acting-director agreed to publish the novel and Arthur Waugh returned to London to discover that his son was his firm's newest author. Connolly, The Modern Movement, 58. Antique print, titled: 'Hampstead Heath (Bank Holiday).' - Large colourful and bustling etching depicting a large crowd enjoying their Bank Holiday on Hampstead Heath. The fair is decpited in the background. The entire series is infused with a strong anti-snobbish satirical element. From the 'Rues et Visages de London' (1928) series of 21 prints. Etching and aquatint with hand colouring on wove (vellin) paper. Made by 'Chas Laborde' after own design. Charles (Chas) Laborde (1886-1941) was born in Buenos Aires into a wealthy family. The family soon returned to France, where he started drawing as a child. He enrolled at the prestigious Academie Julian. At this time he made friends with Darrigan, whose family they visit during the summers. This is where his love for England started, and he also adopted the abbreviation of his name to Chas. His career started making captioned drawings for Le Rire, l'Assiette au Beurre and Sourire. During the First World War he enlisted but continued to send pictures to Le Rire Rouge. He published his album Rues et Visages de Paris in 1926, and two years later a similar album with prints of London street scenes. Very good, given age. Remains of attachment to carrier on the rear. Sheet edges a little irregular. A pencil annotation in the lower left margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. H. G. Wells
London: Ernest Benn, 1928. An exceptionally Fine First Edition copy of the author’s allegorical satire written just after the death of his wife.  The highly detailed pictorial dust jacket by Sir William Orpen depicts a naked Mr Blettsworthy watching cannibals dancing around a fire, and is a marvelous collectible in itself.  The story concerns our hero shipwrecked among savages whose rituals and beliefs parody those of modern society.  In the end though, he awakens to discover that all of this has been a delusion within his own insanity.  This is probably Wells’ most psychopathological work.  This copy comes protected in a custom-made, quite lovely red slip case. And what a dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Woolf, Virginia
London: Hogarth Press, 1928. First British, and the first trade edition, preceded by the Crosby Gaige limited edition. One of 5080 copies printed. Portrait frontispiece, plates. 299 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. First English and First Trade edition. Woolf's singular feminist masterwork was written as "a tribute to [Vita] Sackville-West in the form of a parodic biography of a four-hundred-year old character, who starts out as a young aristocratic man in the Elizabethan age, changes from male to female in the course of the seventeenth century, and winds up as a modern woman driving a motor car in the 'present moment' ... Satirizing both the history of literature and the history of sexuality, Woolf playfully suggests both might be a matter of style" (Encyclopedia of Feminist Literature, p. 277). Wollmer 185; Kirkpatrick A11b. Original orange cloth, pictorial dust jacket. Some spotting to pastedowns, some minor rubbing, light wear and dust soiling to jacket.
