WIDE WORLD PHOTO.
Wide World Photo, 1928. Original photograph, gelatine silver print, 17 x 23,5 cm. Flight. June 14, 1928 - American Balloon Race Fatalities: In spite of warnings that thunderstorms might be expected the national elimination balloon race started at Pittsburgh on May 30 and thirteen of the fourteen balloons were quickly forced down. Lieut. P. Everet, the pilot of the Army balloon No. 3 was killed when his balloon was struck by lightning and caught fire. His companion, Lieut, Ugent, managed to bring it down without injury to himself. Another balloon, the Goodyear, No. 5, caught fire also, and its pilot, Mr. Ward T. van Orman, broke his leg, after leaping with a parachute, and his companion, Mr. Walter Morton, was found dead after he had jumped out. The airship, Los Angeles, was abroad during the storm but returned safely to Lakehurst, New Jersey. Flying in the U.S. Nat.B-Races. - - - - The National Race of 1928, held on May 30 in Pittsburgh, turned out a disaster. Lightning strikes downed three aircraft, including Van Orman's. A direct thunderbolt killed Morton instantly and ignited hydrogen in the gas bag. The balloon's basket fell from three thousand feet, supported by a "parachute" of what remained of its gas bag. Van Orman, unconscious in his basket, survived the impact without serious injuries. "I was looking directly at the flash... hardly thicker than my finger ... it passed within two feet of my eyes. I had time after the flash to look up over the edge of the 'rain dodger' we had spread across the top of the basket and note that the bottom of the bag apparently was stil … [Click Below for Full Description]

SASSOON, Siegfried
Faber & Gwyer, 1928. 1st edition. Hardcover. Fine blue boards, not faded at the spine as is commonly found, with bright gilt spine lettering; extremely clean pages, untrimmed to fore-edge and lower edge, not a hint of foxing; slight offset from the flaps on the first and last leaves; with the dropped 'o' from 'platoon' on page 365, and 'merey' for 'merely' in line 1 of page 191 (a misprint often overlooked). The cream dustjacket is in fine condition, with one minuscule nick on the top edge, no tears or chips elsewhere, is not price-clipped, and has no browning at all, which is very unusual for this title. Published anonymously at first, Sassoon's autobiographical novel of life in the English shires before the First World War, and then of joining up when war broke out, is one of the great classics of English literature, winner of the Hawthornden Prize and the James Tait Black Prize, and this first trade printing is in remarkably nice condition. Young poet was already seriously ill, and the knowledge of the approaching death shadowed his works, where central themes circle around suffering, sin, and efforts to achieve purity of spirit. He wrote about dreams and death, leading his friends to believe that he knew of his impending death. The image of death, burial, and continued existence appears in verse “Kun olin kuollut” (When I was dead), in which the poet imagines that, after he has been laid in his grave, he listens to a conversation between a woman he loved and another person about him. Poem “Poikani” (My Son) is dedicated to poet’s unborn son and depicts small boy dissapearing when he tries to take his hand. In “Partaalla” (On the Brink) most directly expressed his private terrors, a nightmare of frightening intensity, which are born from poet’s mental collapse. KRISHNAMURTI, J[iddu].
New York: Boni & Liveright,, 1928. Octavo. Original boards, black cloth spine with title label, gilt-patterned cloth sides. With the dust jacket, supplied. Spine label tanned, corners a little rubbed, small damp stain to fore-edge of front board, a very good copy, with the supplied jacket only very slightly chipped at the extremities, slightly sunned around spine and edges, with a few minor marks, but very nice. First edition, first printing, rare signed copy of this early collection of mystical poems, signed "J. Krishnamurti" on the front free endpaper. Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895-1986), a Brahmin who as a child had been selected and groomed by Theosophists and as the long-expected "World Teacher", but soon rejected the mantle and spent his life travelling the world, teaching, and writing. Not unlike Rabindranath Tagore, Krishnamurti became popular in the Western world as a conduit for ancient Eastern wisdom. He gained international fame with The First and Last Freedom, published in 1954 with a Foreword by Aldous Huxley, whom he had befriended in 1938 while living in California. Krishnamurti's earlier books are scarce, and signed copies are remarkably rare. This copy has the ticket of a Hollywood bookshop apparently dedicated to the guru, "Krishnamurti's Works: 1705 N. Vine St. Hollywood, California".
