MASEFIELD (John)
William Heinemann Ltd,, London, 1928. 8vo. [228 x 147 x 10 mm]. [3]ff, 48pp. Bound in the original blue boards with vellum spine lettered in gilt, in the original dust-wrapper (dust-wrapper a little frayed around the edges). Limited to 275 copies of which 250 were for sale. This is no.4, signed by John Masefield, and with his booklabel "From the library of John Masefield O.M., Poet Laureate". Masefield (1878-1967) was Poet Laureate from 1930 until his death, and was admitted to the Order of Merit in 1935. When in the mid-1920s Masefield turned to writing plays based on religious themes, he encountered a ban on the performance of plays on biblical subjects that went back to the Reformation and had been revived a generation earlier to prevent production of Oscar Wilde's Salome. A compromise was reached, and in 1928 The Coming of Christ was the first play to be performed in an English Cathedral since the Middle Ages. [Attributes: First Edition]

[BOHR, Niels; BORN, Max; BRAGG, William Lawrence; COMPTON, Arthur; DE BROGLIE, Louis; DIRAC, Paul; EINSTEIN, Albert; HEISENBERG, Werner; LORENTZ, Hendrik; SCHRÖDINGER, Erwin; et al.]
Paris: Gauthier Villars, 1928. <p>First edition, rare in the original printed wrappers, of the proceedings of the fifth Solvay Congress, where the debate between Bohr and Einstein on the consistency and completeness of quantum mechanics began. It was at this, the most famous of the Solvay conferences, that Einstein, disenchanted with Heisenberg's uncertainly principle, made his famous remark that "God does not play dice," to which Niels Bohr replied, "Einstein, stop telling God what to do!" Seventeen of the twenty-nine attendees, which included nearly all the principal architects of the old and the new quantum theory, were or became Nobel Prize winners. "The three and a half years since the fourth Solvay Conference ... were marked by enormous progress in quantum physics. Partly based on discoveries and ideas that had been available already before 1924 − such as the Compton effect and matter waves − the new atomic theory had arisen, which did more than throw new light on the difficulties discussed at the 1924 conference: quantum or wave mechanics went right to the heart of the problems posed by atomic phenomena. The two subjects put programmatically into the title of the fifth Solvay Conference − electrons and photons − designated the crucial points of interest, because 'electrons' also stood for the smallest, massive constituents of matter, and they now became associated with waves, and 'photons' (a name given only recently, in October 1926 by the physical chemist Gilbert N. Lewis, to Einstein's light-quanta) characterized the quantum-theoretical aspect of electromagnetic … [Click Below for Full Description]

« [...] Indeed I have not much to say but to [...] remark that 2 grains is given by Guy & Ferrier & by Buchanan in their works of toxicology, as the minimum fatal dose; & that in the Cats' Eye, it was assumed that more than one chocolate [...] ». Sims, il romanzo The Unwilling Adventurer (1913) e l'imminente When Rogues Fall Out (Dr Thorndyke's Discovery negli Stati Uniti). Chiude: « [...] But I find myself envying Edgar Wallace. If I had his power of mass-production, I would do a big batch and then give myself a long rest. However, the long rest will come in due course [...] ». Thorndyke mi sbalordisce. Milano, Periodici Mondadori, 1950, in 4°, brossura illustrata a colori, pp. 84. Prima edizione italiana autonoma, collana « Gialli economici Mondadori » n. 31. Eight uniform volumes: Popanilla and Other Tales, Contarini Fleming, Alroy, Coningsby, Sybil, Tancred, Lothair and Endymion. Thayaht, Ernesto. - Ram [Ruggero Alfredo Michaelles].

[Click Below for Full Description]

von Neumann, John
Berlin: Julius Springer 1928. First Edition. IV, [1]-751, [1] pages. 8vo. Later blue cloth with gilt titling "Mathematische Annalen | 100 | 1928" on spine panel. Upper corner of textblock bumped, otherwise bright and clean internally with just a few pencilled notations. Cloth. The first paper and most important paper by von Neumann related to the Theory of Games, where he establishes his minimax theorem and offers the first general proof. A fundamentally important piece of mathematics that has established and/or significantly enhanced many fields, not the least of which is economics. "The first proof of the minimax theorem for two-person games of chance and skill with any finite number of pure strategies was given by John von Neumann (1928) in a paper presented to the Gottingen Mathematical Society on 7 December 1926...John von Neumann deserves the credit for the first general proof of the minimax theorem." (Weintraub, pp 24-25) "...John von Neumann single-handely invented game theory, introducing the genral mathematical concept of 'strategy' in [the present paper which ] contained the proof of his famous 'minimax' theorem that says 'a strategy exists that guarantees, for each player, a maximum payoff assuming that the adversary acts so as to minimize that payoff." OOC 953. "The role as founder is even more obvious for the theory of games, which von Neumann, in a 1926 paper, conjured - so to speak - out of nowhere...This [minimax theory] was the starting point for far reaching generalizations, including applications to economics, a topic in which von Neumann became interest … [Click Below for Full Description]

DOYLE, Jean Conan, née LECKIE (1874-1940), [DOYLE, Sir Arthur Conan, association].
1st November 1928. ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LETTER WRITTEN BY SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE'S SECOND WIFE. Written in black ink over both sides of two sheets of headed note paper from the R.M.S. Windsor Castle, Union-Castle Line. With the original envelope addressed to a Mrs. Hewitt of London, SW7. Stamp and postmarks from South Africa, dated 12th November 1928. Envelope torn open, as expected; lightly browned with a few marks. Letter is near-fine. Jean Leckie, Mrs. Doyle since 1907, here writes to a friend in London from aboard ship as she travels with her husband to South Africa, where they embarked on a Spiritualist lecture tour. As is clear from the letter, their mission was very much to convert as many people as possible to their religion - an endeavour in which they seem to have been reasonably successful, even at sea. She begins her letter by reporting a 'fearful storm', in which, 'had the ship rolled 2 degrees more, she must have gone over, and not a soul would have survived.'. Original blue printed wrappers, entire issue offered. In Bell System Technical Journal 7, pages 535-63. Wraps. The first was Nyquist's "Certain factors affecting telegraph speed" published in 1924, ... and the second was Hartley's "Transmission of Information". Hartley, a research engineer at Bell Laboratories, wanted to establish a quantitative measure to compare the capacities of various types of communications systems - telephone, television, etc.-to transmit information.' A complete run in three issues (62, 96, 96 pp.) of the French literary review put out by the group of the same name, comprised of writers and artists including René Dumaul, Roger Gilbert-Lecomte, Joseph Sima, Roger Vailland, Robert Meyrat, Pierre Minet, Leon Pierre-Quint, and André Rolland de Renéville, containing surrealist-inspired essays, poetry, and reviews and criticism, topics include the necessity of revolution and the world of myth, with additional contributions from Maurice Henry, Jaroslav Seifert, Mayo, Arp, and others. Scattered illustrations from drawings and photographs. Some scattered toning. 8vo. Orig. printed wrpps., some soiling and minor spotting to covers, some creasing, edge and spine wear. Paris 1928-1930. In 1922 Dumaul, Lecomte, Vailland, Meyrat, all friends from school, formed a group called "Phrères Simplistes", with the goal of rediscovering the simplicity of childhood and spontaneous knowledge through extrasensory research, pataphysics, mystical texts, and drug experimentation. In 1925 they discovered surrealism and adapted some of its precepts. Later disagreements between members over the tenets of the group and the devotion to surrealism led some members to break off and the group to dissolve in 1932. There were only three issues of this journal published originally. A 1977 reprint includes the contents of a fourth issue planned for Autumn 1932, which was never printed at the time.
