WEILL, Kurt 1900-1950
1928. "Few composers of the 20th century have devoted themselves as single-mindedly to musical theatre, including opera, as Weill. In his two composing careers, the first in Europe, the second in the USA, he moved from European highbrow to American middlebrow - the former an intellectual background which impinges even on such overtly 'popular' works as Die Dreigroschenoper, the latter a cultural context to which he adapted with apparent ease but which most of his American works ultimately transcend." op. cit. Smallens (December 20, 1888/January 1, 1889 - 1972 ), noted Russian-born American conductor, studied at the New York Institute of Musical Art and, from 1909, at the Paris Conservatoire, returning to the USA as assistant conductor of the Boston Opera, 1911-14. After two years as conductor of Pavlova's touring company, including a South American tour, he returned to become conductor of the Chicago Opera, 1919-23... His Chicago association began when he replaced Hasselmans as conductor for the première of De Koven's Rip Van Winkle, and he also gave the première of Prokofiev's The Love for Three Oranges at Chicago in 1921. He was musical director of the Philadelphia Civic Opera, 1924-31, where he gave the American premières of Strauss's Feuersnot in 1927 and Ariadne auf Naxos in 1928, and was also assistant conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, 1927-34. Later he moved towards a lighter repertory, conducting the première of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess at Boston in 1935..." Bernard Jacobson in Grove Music Online.. Born, Max; Fock, V. (Vladimir Aleksandrovich)
Julius Springer, Berlin. FIRST EDITION, OFFPRINT ISSUE IN ORIGINAL PAPER WRAPS, OF BORN & FOCK'S 1928 PAPER PROVIDING THE FIRST PROOF OF THE ADIABATIC THEOREM IN QUANTUM MECHANICS. Of "central import in non-relativistic quantum mechanics", the theorem asserts that "a physical system remains in its instantaneous eigenstate if a given perturbation is acting on it slowly enough and if there is a gap between the eigenvalue and the rest of the Hamiltonian's spectrum" (Katanaev, Adiabatic Theorem, Steklov, 2011, 1; Kovchegov, A note on adiabatic theorem, 1). Max Born and Vladimir Fock's work was motivated by a point of view advocated by [Paul] Ehrenfest, "which identified classical adiabatic invariants as the observables that get quantized. The theorem they proved was geared to show that quantum numbers are preserved by adiabatic deformations. Born and Fock proved an adiabatic theorem for Hamiltonian operators, H(s), with simple discrete spectrum? Their proof covers Hamiltonians like the one dimensional Harmonic oscillator, but not the Hydrogen atom, which has absolutely continuous spectrum at positive energies, and eigenvalues with multiplicities at negative energies. (ibid). CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Julius Springer.Complete offprint. 8vo. (9 x 6.25 inches). Slight, small crease upper right corner. Bright and clean inside and out. Fine condition. The most successful of Weill's collaborations with playwright Bertolt Brecht, Die Dreigroschenoper, adapted from Peter Gay's The Beggar's Opera (London, 1728), was first performed in Berlin on August 31, 1928. It was quite successful on Broadway in the 1950s, its signature tune being the immensely popular Mack the Knife. "In Europe and beyond, Die Dreigroschenoper's infectious blend of cynicism and sentimentality had held audiences in the grip of what became known as Dreigroschen-fever - a craze that did not reach the USA until the mid-1950s." Rasch, Heinz and Bodo.
Stuttgart, Akademischer Verlag Dr. Fritz Wedekind & Co. 287pp., with 378 drawings and photo illustrations. 29,5 x 22 cm. Original publisher´s cloth backed boards with illustrated cover. “„Wie bauen?“ was published twice in a strongly changed concept and layout. The first book, dating from 1927, with a preface by Adolf Behne, was subtitled „Bau und Einrichtung der Werkbundsiedlung am Weißenhof in Stuttgart 1927“ referring directly to the Weissenhof settlement. The second book, bearing the same title undoubtedly because of the commercial success of the first (only adding to the front cover the year „1929“ and „Nr.2“ in red color) is subtitled more general: „Materialien und Konstruktionen für industrielle Produktion - Jahresausgabe 1928“ (Materials and structures for industrial production - annual edition 1928). The puzzling 1929 - instead of 1928 - on the cover must have been the publisher’s choice to have a better sell over more years. In the second issue we find an advertisement of „Wie bauen?“ Nr.3 (annual edition 1929) which, however, was never published. The advertisement promised a content showing the development of hand craft building towards recent industrial production, tables on optimal dimensions of building elements and achievements of American building industry.” Jos Tomlow. Doyle, Arthur Conan; Leblanc, Maurice; McCulley, Johnston; Kikuchi, Kan (translator); Shigeru, Hatsuyama (designer); Toshi, Michioka (illustrator); Nobuo, Imamura (illustrator); Seihachiro, Emori (illustrator)
(Tokyo): (K bunsha), 1928. Illustrated edition of three popular mysteries, one each from America, England, and France, including what is likely the earliest Japanese translation of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sign of Four, published for the use of schoolchildren. This collection is Volume 45 in the short-lived but ambitious series Shogakusei Zenshu, "Complete Works for Primary School Students," which ran to 88 volumes between 1927 and 1928. Sherlock Holmes had been a wildly popular character in Japan since the first translation of The Return of Sherlock Holmes in 1926, followed by this edition of Sign of Four and a second translation of the same novel by Ken Nobuhara the same year (Universal Sherlock Holmes). While only one story in this volume is by Doyle, two feature Holmes. The first story is "The Hollow Needle," Maurice Leblanc's tale of Arsène Lupin, a gentleman burglar who serves as a nemesis to Sherlock Holmes (changed to "Holmlock Shears" after Doyle's objection). Holmes and Lupin each get the better of the other by turns, yet the central storyline follows a boy of seventeen, a detective in the making. The second story, "Subway Sam," features a New York City pickpocket, a modern Robin Hood figure created by Johnston McCulley, a prolific mystery writer for the pulps and creator of Zorro. The final story is Doyle's Sign of Four, in which Mary Morstan asks Holmes's help in solving a mystery of murders, pearls, and the Agra treasure. This translation begins at the very end of Doyle's chapter one, when Mary Morstan's card is presented - leaving out the opening discussio … [Click Below for Full Description]

Houghton Mifflin Co. [1928]., Boston and New York. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-288, inserted frontispiece with uncredited drawing of the Golem (this plate does not appear in the UK issue), original purple cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black, top edge stained black, fore-edge untrimmed. First edition in English, U.S. issue (made up from British sheets). Meyrink's first novel "prefigures that disastrous climax [World War I] to a century of growth and change. The phantasmagorical, threatened Prague of this novel - its wainscots haunted by a Golem who is more like a psychic fog than an actual entity, and the false polder of its ghetto withering under the baleful light of a new century - makes THE GOLEM into a pure urban fantasy: a tale whose setting, like some vast subterranean edifice, seems literally alive, organic, all-encompassing, Gothic. It is, however, like most twentieth-century urban fantasies distinguished from its Gothic ancestors through a sense that the fall of the city will be a bad omen for its inhabitants, not a release. At the same time, the pending destruction of Prague (and all of Europe itself) is treated by Meyrink with a deep ambivalence, and his next novels all tend to present the apocalypse as an occult cleansing of the material world so that higher unions of the spirit can be achieved." - Clute and Grant (eds), The Encyclopedia of Fantasy (1997), p. 642. Montale, Eugenio
[Click Below for Full Description]

ARTHUR GORDON
AROUND THE WORLD, ASIA, EUROPE, SOUTH AMERICA: (1928). Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. On offer is an exceptional, thoroughly fascinating and definitely unique scrapbook by a long time seaman, navy officer, and author by the name of Arthur Gordon. It cannot be understated how interesting this document of travel in the late 1920s is. It is in such excellent condition, and absolutely filled with interesting photographs, postcards from numerous contents, and ephemera that lend a tremendous amount of meaning and significance to the documents around it. The scrapbook dates from 1928-1929 right after he graduated from college at NYU. There are probably close to 200 photographs and postcards in this book. Gordon and a friend traveled around the globe for six months via steamship seeking out adventure and this book is the grand culmination of their globe trotting. Many of the photographs, post cards, and ephemera have captions that explain them and often describe the spots visited along with short paragraphs about the journey. The ephemera in the book are also rare and very interesting. Alongside the photos and post cards, Gordon added numerous hotel stickers, luggage tags from ports visited, identification cards from the ship, and even a "Certificate of Vaccination" that "certifies that Mr. Arthur Gordon was vaccinated against Smallpox on Nov. 25, 1928" and signed by the Doctor. However, the two most interesting items of ephemera are probably 1) an original handout from Dollar Steamship line mentioning "100 tins of Opium still hidden on board this ship" and offering a reward of "5 d … [Click Below for Full Description]

1928. First Edition of The Paradoxes of Legal Science Inscribed by Cardozo Cardozo, Benjamin N. [1870-1938]. The Paradoxes of Legal Science. New York: Columbia University Press, 1928 (1930 printing)]. v, 142 pp. Publisher's cloth, negligible light shelfwear. "To the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. From Benjamin N. Cardozo" in bold hand to front free endpaper, internally clean. Ex-Bar Association Library. Inkstamp to title page, annotations to verso, another inkstamp to rear pastedown. A well-preserved copy with an interesting association. $1,000. * First edition. One of Cardozo's most important books, the Paradoxes of Legal Science is a classic statement of juristic pragmatism. As Goodhart points out, it also reveals the non-legal sources that informed his work. "His many references in these lectures to Greek philosophy show how great a part his early classical training played in the formation of his ideas; in relating his general principles to the concrete cases which, in his words, he used as a kind of legal litmus paper, he was a true Aristotelian" (Goodhart). The inscription reflects Cardozo's association with, and affection for, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. Goodhart, Five Jewish Lawyers of the Common Law 59-60.

Seguy, E(mile)-A(llain)
Not after 1928. 4 original watercolors on stiff board (445 x 325 mm; 17.5" x 12.75" - image size: 370 x 280 mm; 14.5" x 11"). Matted on archival board. These watercolors were utilized to create plates 17-20 in Seguy's famed "Insectes" Portfolio. With editorial notations concerning the printing of the plates in the margins. Some wear and tear, overall in surprisingly good condition, suitable for exhibition. Original Seguy watercolors, being four large and justly famous compositions of insect motifs rendered in the Art Deco manner, the coloring lush and vibrant, the geometric patterns intricate and intense. These are the only original watercolors by Seguy that we have ever seen. The published prints were produced using the pochoir technique, which entails hand coloring each plate through a large number of stencils. "In comparison with their variety and brilliance, much Art Deco illustration seems pallid and constrained. And of course their large format makes them particularly attractive for exhibition puposes" (Ray, The Art Deco Book in France). Seguy's "mastery of decorative design and coloration is evident in the beautiful pochoir portfolios he created. Unusual in his capacity to span the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, Seguy's portfolio's remain exquisite examples of ornamentation and composition" (Kiama Art Gallery). E.A. Séguy (1877-1951) is today considered one of the influential artists of the Art Deco period. He studied at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris; in 1913, he founded the artistic department of the Grands Magasins du Printemps and worked as an illu … [Click Below for Full Description]
