Is this the kind of book "you would wish your wife or servants to read?"LAWRENCE, D.H. Lady Chatterley's Lover. Florence: Privately Printed, 1928.8vo., original paper covered boards with black phoenix on upper board, paper label to spine; pp. 365, a little light chipping to spine ends, small closed split on upper joint, a little foxing to label, otherwise a very good copy, unopened, scarce plain paper dust wrapper missing substantial portion from bottom fore-edge of lower panel and other chips.First edition, number 892 of 1000 copies numbered and signed by Lawrence.Lawrence's controversial novel tells of a passionate affair between an aristocrat, the titular Lady Chatterley, and Oliver Mellors, her husband's gamekeeper. It was first published privately in 1928 in Italy, and in 1929 in France and Australia. An unexpurgated edition was not published openly in the United Kingdom until 1960, when it was the subject of a watershed obscenity trial against the publisher Penguin Books. During the trial, prosecutor Mervyn Griffith-Jones famously asked whether the novel was "a book that you would... wish your wife or your servants to read", although Penguin were found not guilty after only three hours. The verdict helped to bring about a more liberal and permissive Britain, and over 3 million copies quickly sold. The book was also banned for obscenity in the US, Canada, Australia, India and Japan for its story of the physical (and emotional) relationship between a working class man and an upper class woman, its explicit descriptions of sex, and its use of then-unprintable words. There are no bookplates, signatures or markings of any kind in the book. The pages are clean and free of any foxing. This is the limited edition #640 of 800 copies signed by James Joyce. About the Author: James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (1882 - 1941) was an Irish expatriate author of the 20th century. He is known for his landmark novel Ulysses (1922) and its controversial successor Finnegans Wake (1939), as well as the short story collection Dubliners (1914) and the semi-autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). Although he spent most of his adult life outside Ireland, Joyce's psychological and fictional universe is firmly rooted in his native Dublin, the city which provides the settings and much of the subject matter for all his fiction. In particular, his tempestuous early relationship with the Irish Roman Catholic Church is reflected through a similar inner conflict in his recurrent alter ego Stephen Dedalus. As the result of his minute attentiveness to a personal locale and his self-imposed exile and influence throughout Europe, notably in Paris, Joyce paradoxically became one of the most cosmopolitan yet one of the most regionally focused of all the English language writers of his time. Moscow: Kinopechat' (Kino-Izdatel'stvo RSFSR), 1928. Quarto (30.5 × 23.5 cm). Publisher's staple-stitched photo-illustrated wrappers (attributed to Gustavs Klucis); 39, [1] pp. Numerous photographs and illustrations. Very good. Early double issue of this important Soviet cinema journal, published by the Association of Revolutionary Cinematography, founded in 1924 with the objective of developing a repertory and vocabulary for film to serve the Soviet masses. This issue is largely devoted to the question of genuinely "Soviet" script-writing, with numerous articles on the subject, including one by the expressionist poet Ippolit Sokolov. Also featured are short comments by Lev Nikulin, Lev Kuleshov, Vsevolod Pudovkin, and Viktor Shklovskii. A theory section brings articles by N. Agadzhanova and another essay by Sokolov, on "Material and form." Other sections present information on new film technology, reviews of recent films, such as Miss Mend; a long analysis of the 1926 silent drama "By the Law" ("Po zakonu") by Lev Kuleshov. Also included is a report on the Russian Photographic Society (RFO), a shorter piece on cinema work in Siberia, the "cinefication" of Belarus, and a report on the international film congress in Paris. The front wrapper features several stills from Sergei Eisenstein's film "The General Line" ("General'naia liniia," 1926-1928). The design, like that of other issues of the journal, is attributed to Gustav Klucis (Klutsis, 1895-1938), the important Latvian-born constructivist designer. One of 4000 copies. WOOLF Virginia
1928. First UK edition. Large 8vo., original orange cloth, lettered in gilt, dust jacket. London, The Hogarth Press. Virginia Woolf?s love letter to Vita Sackville-West and a satirical deconstruction of biographical writing. As Virginia and Vita?s romantic entanglement ended, Sackville-West took a new lover, and Woolf took up her pen. Orlando was envisioned by Woolf as the fantastical biography of Vita, spanning centuries rather than decades, a transgression from historical time in which the notion of ?genetic inheritance can be pooled (just as sexual orientations can be crossed) in the identity of one person? (Lee). The biographical novel comes complete with all the ephemeral trimmings of a real biography, including photographs, all taken by Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell at Knole House. Taken of paintings of Vita?s ancestors, which are used here as depictions of Orlando, of Angelica Bell as Sasha, the Russian princess, and finally Vita herself, embodies Orlando in the present day. The end result is a far cry from Woolf?s father?s rather more conventional work on the Dictionary of National Biography. Orlando was published just as Jonathan Cape was being taken to trial on obscenity charges for publishing Radclyffe Hall?s sapphic novel, The Well of Loneliness. Despite Woolf?s gender bending plot line, no such charges were taken up against the Hogarth Press for Orlando. Hermione Lee in her biography of Woolf states that: ?Through its fantasy and jokiness, Orlando escaped the public suppression which The Well of Loneliness notoriously encountered in the same year.? A near fine … [Click Below for Full Description]

Zella Armstrong & Janie French
King Printing Company, Bristol TN. FIRST EDITION, PRINTED 1928, "FROM THE PRESS OF THE KING PRINTING COMPANY BRISTOL, TENNESSEE". In my humble opinion, this copy is in very good condition as it is 90 years old! It has been saved from the "usual library wear" so common to many antique books as it was previously owned by an individual versus a lending library. DO NOT MISS THIS AWESOME OPPORTUNITY TO OWN A FIRST EDITION PRINTING (COPYRIGHT 1928) of the book entitled "NOTABLE SOUTHERN FAMILIES, THE CROCKETT FAMILY and CONNECTING LINES, VOLUME V". This book is Volume V (five) of the set of books entitled "Notable Southern Families" as written by the co-authors Ms. Janie Preston Collup French and Ms. Zella Armstrong. Volume Five is a genealogical history of The Crockett Family, and yes, the family history of "Mr. Davey Crockett" of Alamo Fame is included! IN ADDITION, THIS COPY IS INSCRIBED ON THE FRONT ENDPAPER WITH NAME AND ADDRESS OF A MEMBER OF THE CROCKETT FAMILY - A MS. SALLY CROCKETT OF PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE! There are NO DOG-EARED PAGES; AND ABSOLUTELY NO INK UNDERLINING OR HIGH-LIGHTING HAS BEEN DONE TO THESE PRECIOUS PAGES! There is a bit of "shading" on the inside and back covers where for years the previous owner apparently had stored a letter or other papers. As this is present on the inside of both covers, this could be common in older books - I am not certain. The book contains 611 (six hundred and eleven) deckle-edged pages of glorious genealogical information regarding "the Crockett Family & Connecting Lines". The book was copyrighted in 1928, and was print … [Click Below for Full Description]

James Joyce
New York: Crosby Caige. Description: Signed James Joyce - Anna Livia Plurabelle Book 1928 #640/800 About Item: Up for sale, Signed James Joyce - Anna Livia Plurabelle Book 1928 #640/800. This book is in good condition. The gilt lettering and decoration to the spine and front cover is bright. There is some light rubbing to the outside boards. First edition, four volumes, folio, pp.xxxix, 547; xii, (549)-1159, 505 photographic illustrations; 138 plates (numbered to 137, with one A plate), 13 in colour, 59 plans; 52 folding maps. A very good set in original cloth. Rather torn and soiled dust wrappers. The detailed scientific report on Aurel Stein's third great Central Asian Expedition in which he covered nearly 11,000 miles in thirty-two months between 1913 and 1916, and pursued geographical as well as archaeological research. From Kashmir Stein followed the pilgrim route to Kashgar, crossed the Taklamakan desert to Khotan, and explored the Lop desert discovering the ancient site of Lou-lan. He revisited the "Caves of the Thousand Buddhas", pushed down the Etsin-gol and investigated Khara-khoto, the site first discovered by Colonel Kozlov. From there to Turfan, where the expedition secured "a considerable collection of interesting mural paintings from ruined Buddhist shrines". When arrangements had been made to transport the 182 cases of antiquities collected to Kashmir, Stein crossed the Pamirs and the valleys of the Upper Oxus passing Bokhara and Samarkand on his way to Sistan. In the first two volumes Stein provides a record of his journey and of the antiques he collected, with 505 photographic illustrations. The plate volume has 138 superbly printed plates, 13 of which are in colour. The map volume contains an index map, 47 sheet maps of portions of Chinese Turkestan and Kansu from surveys made during the explorations of 1900-01, 1906-08, and 1913-15, on a scale of 1:50 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Charles Blair Macdonald
Condition: Good. Scotland's Gift: Golf by Charles Blair Macdonald First edition book published in 1928 Small scuff mark on the binding otherwise in good condition. As one reviewer wrote about this book: "Although I don't know that I could define "serious golfer" off hand, you might fit in that category if: You have ever played at the National Golf Links of America Want to know how the USGA came to be Wonder what golf was like in the late 19th century in the US Dream of building your own course, but have no clue what "good design" is Personally, I fit into the last slot. Most of us play rounds or look at yardage books and try to figure out why one course is on the top 100 of every magazine, and another never seems to see the light of day in print. For people like this, we need books on golf architecture. This book contains, arguably, one of the most concise takes on the subject. It would be misleading to say that architecture is the only matter covered. Actually, it only accounts for about a quarter of the volume in total. The rest is the personal narrative of Macdonald as the pioneer of golf in America, and as one of the founders of the USGA. It also discusses early tournaments in the US, which may be of interest to history buffs. Much of this is probably required knowledge to have any sort of intelligent discussion on golf history, and is worth a quick read at the least. Given that Macdonald was involved with the USGA for the decades after its inception, he also was there to witness the begining of problems that still plague the game today. Namely, the question of equipmen … [Click Below for Full Description]

GILL, Macdonald
[London,: Waterlow & Sons, 1928]. [London,: Waterlow & Sons,, 1928].. Chromolithograph map, mounted on linen on original rollers. Gill's rare poster map advertising the bus services from London to the Home Counties. The text around the map reads: “Far flung are our bus routes, they here are displayed. They mean nought to you! We are not dismayed. There are thousands of citizens who love the fresh air. Hundreds not misers will pay debonair. But they must remember to clear their waste paper. Dry bottles and what not at the end of their caper. So there!” Leslie MacDonald Gill (1884- 1947) was a noted graphic designer, cartographer, artist and architect. Born in Brighton, he was the younger brother of Eric Gill, one of the leading figures of the Arts and Crafts movement. In 1914 his "Wonderground Map", commissioned by Frank Pick, and hung at every station, helped to save the London Underground by presenting an accurate map which also had a humorous side in cartoon style. Produced in poster form, it was also made available for sale to members of the public and proved to be very popular. Elder brother Eric, who at that time was engaged in a commission for Westminster Cathedral, was included at the bottom of the map. He also designed of the standard upper case lettering used on headstones and war memorials by the Imperial War Graves Commission. But it is perhaps his illustrated maps for which he is most well known. These maps have featured in a series of exhibitions including Magnificent Maps exhibition in 2010 at the British Library, an exhibition MacDonald Gill, Out of the … [Click Below for Full Description]
