WYLIE, Elinor.
The Borough Press, Henley-on-Thames, 1928. First edition. Octavo. 22 pages. Patterned paper wrappers. The "onlie begetter" of these sonnets was Henry de Clifford Woodhouse, the husband of a friend of Wylie's whom she met when she came to England shortly after the collapse of her marriage to William Rose Benét. It is no exaggeration to say she had a complicated love life. One of 51 copies, this being copy 6, signed by the author. Most of the copies were still unsigned when Wylie died suddenly of a stroke on 16 December 1928. This copy is inscribed by her: "For Florida Scott-Maxwell - Christmas, 1928-". Also she has corrected a grammatical error in the colophon and made another correction to Sonnet XV. The recipient was a writer and Jungian psychoanalyst. Cover edges a little nicked and rubbed. Very good. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

RUSSELL, Bertrand.
London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1928. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Spine sunned and rolled, light stain to front cover, top edge and front endpaper. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. The copy of Russell's friend Lytton Strachey, with his ownership signature to the front free endpaper. Russell recounts in his autobiography that he came to know Strachey through his mother, with whom Russell campaigned for female suffrage. A fan of Strachey's writing, Russell recalls that "I heard him read Eminent Victorians before it was published, and I read it again to myself in prison. It caused me to laugh so loud that the officer came round to my cell, saying I must remember that prison is a place of punishment" (Russell, Autobiography, 1998, pp. 69-70). Both Strachey and Russell were conscientious objectors during the First World War, and Russell's philosophy had a major impact on the Bloomsbury Group. Blackwell & Ruja A57.1a. Baker, Josephine
Copenhagen: 1928. Signed in pencil on oval half-tone photographic reproduction printed in rose. 6 x 3-3/4 inches. Inscribed "Josephine Baker, Copenhagen 1928" in pencil. Baker's (1906-1975) first performed in Copenhagen in June 1928 in the show "Wien, Wien - Oh Josephine" at the Dagmar Theatre. Her performance, which included her famous banana skirt dance, caused a sensation. The Danish avant-garde embraced her, while the conservative and religious elements of society were predictably appalled by the provocative sexual nature of her performance and by her seemingly fluid gender and racial identity. The photographic image, which shows a topless Baker in pearls and ostrich feathers, was likely clipped from the show's program. Backed on coated paper, some light surface wear and creasing.

Keller, Hellen
Garden City: Doubleday, Dorian & Company, Inc, 1928. Early printing of Keller's autobiography of her early life, particularly detailing her relationship with Anne Sullivan. Octavo, original cloth, engraved frontispiece portrait of Keller after a photograph by Marshall. Presentation copy, inscribed by Helen Keller on the front free endpaper, "To Mrs. Hobbe with deep appreciation Sincerely Helen Keller June 1929." Recipient's bookplate to the pastedown. Additional bookplate from the Abbey of Regina Laudis Library. In near fine condition. Rare a desirable signed and inscribed by Keller. Helen Keller became a well-traveled lecturer, activist, and prolific writer despite the rare illness she contracted at 19 months of age which left her both blind and deaf. Much of Keller's success was attributed to the 49-year relationship she had with governess and companion Anne Sullivan who initially taught Keller to communicate by spelling words into her hand. In 1904, at the age of 24, Keller graduated from Radcliffe College of Harvard University, becoming the first deaf-blind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree. She went on to become a world-famous speaker and author, best remembered for her work as an advocate for persons with disabilities, the deaf community, and women's suffrage.

Rutter, Eldon.
G. P. Putmam's Sons, LTD, London, 1928. Volume I: xv, 302 pp., [1], / Volume II: vii, 287 pp., [1], 2 frontispiece portraits with captioned tissue guards, 2 maps, 4 plans, half-titles, slightly rubbed round edges, title gilt in Arabic on upper cover, upper edges gilt, occasional foxing mainly to end leaves of volume 1, bookplate of S. L. Courtauld verso front cover of volume 1, set in very good condition. Rutter was a young Englishman who was inspired by the exploits of Burckhardt and Burton to attempt the Hajj. Following service during the First World War, he took employment in the Malay States in order to learn Arabic and continued his studies in Egypt "where he lived as a native until he felt so thoroughly at home in the language and well versed in the rites and traditions of Islam as to be confident of his ability to carry through the pilgrimage as a fully fledged Muhammadan." (Sir Percy Cox’s Geographical Journal review) Despite the death of his intended travelling companion, and the outbreak of hostilities in the Hejaz, nothing daunted Rutter and "determined to adhere to his longcherished plans," he set out from Suez for Massawa’, wisely avoiding the usual route via Jeddah. A little over a year later he was back in Egypt. "Thus ended a great enterprise, carried through with consummate pluck and fixate of purpose, and now given to his countrymen in two absorbing volumes which leave noting to be desired either in literary style or human interest." FERMI, Enrico.
Berlin: Julius Springer, 1928. First edition. A fine copy, from the library of Niels Bohr, of Fermi's statistical approach to the determination of atomic structure. The association is particularly appropriate since Bohr had inaugurated the quantum-theoretical approach to atomic structure in 1913. Fermi's approach was developed independently and simultaneously by Llewellyn Thomas, and is now known as the 'Thomas-Fermi model.' The Thomas-Fermi model has found modern applications in many fields through its ability to extract qualitative trends analytically and the ease with which the model can be solved. "During the years 1926-1932 Fermi and his associates did first-class but conventional theoretical physics, within the pattern laid down by the physicists of northern Europe. These were the concluding years of the theory of atomic structure; with the invention of wave mechanics and the relativistic explanation of the electrons' intrinsic angular momentum, the theory as we know it today was completed, and Fermi helped complete the picture. He applied his degenerate gas theory to the electrons in atomic structure, producing [in the present paper] a statistical atomic model, and in 1928 we see him calculating the Rydberg correction to S-terms using this idea" (Enrico Fermi 1901-1954: A Biographical Memoir, National Academy of Sciences, p. 127). From the earliest days of quantum mechanics, it has been clear that one could not hope to solve exactly most of the physically interesting systems, especially those with three or more particles. The Thomas-Fermi model aims to describe the s … [Click Below for Full Description]

New York: Adelphi Company, 1928. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in black. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. Spine darkened and a little bumped at ends, ever so slightly shaken, else a very good copy. With 5 black and white charts. First edition, second printing (two months after the first). Inscribed by the author to the Nobel Laureate and economist Frederick Soddy on the front free endpaper: "To Professor Frederick Soddy with the compliments of Irving Fisher January 1929". Soddy had been awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1921 for his work on isotopes. The Money Illusion, based on lectures given in the summer of 1927 before the Geneva School of International Studies, aimed "to show how unstable in buying power are all monetary units, including the dollar; what hidden causes produce that instability; what harm results, although ascribed to other causes; and what are the various remedies which have been tried or proposed" (Preface). These arguments would have been of great interest to Soddy, who wrote five books on the need for reform of the international monetary system between 1921 and 1935. Fisher M-1344a. 1928. Antique print, titled: 'Hampstead Heath (Bank Holiday).' - Large colourful and bustling etching depicting a large crowd enjoying their Bank Holiday on Hampstead Heath. The fair is decpited in the background. The entire series is infused with a strong anti-snobbish satirical element. From the 'Rues et Visages de London' (1928) series of 21 prints. Etching and aquatint with hand colouring on wove (vellin) paper. Made by 'Chas Laborde' after own design. Charles (Chas) Laborde (1886-1941) was born in Buenos Aires into a wealthy family. The family soon returned to France, where he started drawing as a child. He enrolled at the prestigious Academie Julian. At this time he made friends with Darrigan, whose family they visit during the summers. This is where his love for England started, and he also adopted the abbreviation of his name to Chas. His career started making captioned drawings for Le Rire, l'Assiette au Beurre and Sourire. During the First World War he enlisted but continued to send pictures to Le Rire Rouge. He published his album Rues et Visages de Paris in 1926, and two years later a similar album with prints of London street scenes. Very good, given age. Remains of attachment to carrier on the rear. Sheet edges a little irregular. A pencil annotation in the lower left margin. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. Gur'ian, Olga and A[nna] Kazimirovna Borovskaia, illustrator
Moscow: Gosudarstvennoe izdatel'stvo, 1928. Quarto (28.5 × 22 cm). Original staple-stitched pictorial wrappers; 16 pp. With seventeen large chromolithograph illustrations throughout. Small oval stamp of Marcel Bekus ("Ex-libris Marcel Bekus"). Light rust to staples, else very good or better. Second edition (first published in 1927). Striking illustrations and simple verse convey the experience of small children during a citywide celebration of an unnamed holiday in Moscow, most likely the yearly May First Parade. State-organized mass celebrations were progressively more common throughout the 1920s and 1930s as the Soviet state created new rituals to replace the old religious and state holidays. A parade with banners, posters, and music is emphasized here over the specific holiday. The illustrator, Anna Kazimirovna Borovskaia (1901-1984) was a poster artist and illustrator of children's books, games and postcards. She studied at VKhUTEMAS (1924-1929) and her illustrations and posters are stylistically close to the works of OST artists (Obshchestvo stankistov, or Society of Easel Painters). Borovskaia used a subdued palette, stylized and simplified drawing, resorted to generalizing the form combining modernist and realist tendencies. The illustrations for this book combine darker hues with bright layers of red and blue. Olga Gur'ian (1899-1974) was a prolific children's author who published over fifty books in her long writing career. Not in the Lur'e collection (Kniga dlia detei 1881-1939, Moscow: ULEI, 2009).
