EINSTEIN, ALBERT; BOHR, NIELS; HEISENBERG, WERNER; ET AL
Paris: np, 1928. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of the official report of the proceedings of the 1927 Fifth Solvay Conference, generally considered the most important gathering in the history of physics. "Chaired by Dutch physicist Hendrik Lorentz and running from October 24 to 29, 1927, the fifth physics conference was devoted to 'electrons and photons' but was dominated by disputes about the ideas behind quantum mechanics. Beginning in 1925, Danish physicist Niels Bohr, German physicists Werner Heisenberg and Max Born, among others, had formed what came to be known as the 'Copenhagen interpretation' of quantum mechanics, which postulated that the indeterminacy in the theory (i.e., that only the probability of a result could be predicted) was fundamental and should be accepted by scientists. There was no underlying deterministic order to be found. Some physicists, most notably German physicist Albert Einstein, did not accept the Copenhagen interpretation and felt that its reliance on indeterminacy showed that quantum mechanics still was not a complete theory. This dispute was foregrounded at the 1927 conference. Bohr, Heisenberg, and Born were not able to win Einstein over, but the dissemination of the Copenhagen interpretation among physicists was accelerated by the conference and it eventually became the prevailing view of quantum mechanics" (Britannica). The Bohr-Einstein debate that dominated the conference "is considered to be one of the most famous intellectual debates of the 20th century, and probably the most famous one between physicists" (Bricmont, Making Sens … [Click Below for Full Description]

Khmeliuk, Vasyl' and Iuryi Vovk, illustrator
self-published, Prague. Quarto (28 × 19.5 cm). Original staple-stitched gray pictorial wrappers; 26 leaves of lithographed or stencil-copied text and images, with 6 full-page drawings by Vovk. Spine extremities beginning to split; still a very good copy. Third and last book of poems by Khmeliuk (sometimes spelled Khmeluk, 1903-1986), a Ukrainian post-impressionist painter and poet mostly active in the emigration. After his involvement in the Ukrainian-Soviet Civil War of 1917-1920, Khmeliuk, who was originally from Lviv, studied at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts and after 1923 at Charles University in Prague, where he developed a highly unusual style incorporating elements of Dada, futurism, and surrealism. One recent scholar describes the present work as combining "nightmares, hallucinations, humor, parody, statistical details, newspaper articles, and historical facts in a manner that resembles Breton's surrealism" (Anna Bila, Ukrains'kyi literaturnyi avanhard, 368). Daily life in the Czech capital features prominently in the various texts. One of the poems is entitled "Hymn to high-valued currency"; another ("Praise of the fish") descends into a kind of zaum'-like nonsense language. After 1928, Khmeliuk lived in Paris and played a prominent role in the Ukrainian art community. His work was exhibited worldwide and is held in many noted collections and museums. With wrapper design, illustrations, and handwritten text, all stencil-copied by cyclostyle, by Yury Vovk (1899-1961), another Ukrainian modernist artist living in Prague at the time. A highly unusual book, which fus … [Click Below for Full Description]

WILLIAMS, William Carlos
Macaulay Company New York 1928. First Edition. Author's first novel, "the sensitive reactions of an intelligent American to the static culture of present day Europe. His quest for beauty in its many forms leads him to strange adventures and affairs. These too, like the mirages of European culture, leave him unsatisfied until, in the end, he turns to America - his homeland. Here is no apology for the expatriate American intellectual but a vigorous analysis and confirmation of our own world of promise". MILNE, A. A.
London: Methuen & Co., 1928 - Octavo (190 x 128 mm). Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, titles and pictorial centre tool to spine gilt, raised bands, single rule to boards gilt, multiple decorative blocks to boards gilt, twin rule to turn-ins gilt, floral endpapers with original endpapers bound in, gilt edges. A fine copy. Illustrated by E. H. Shepard. First edition, first impression. Milne began planning his final Pooh book in 1927. Three years of intense publicity were taking their toll on the family, and Milne longed to return full-time to adult literature, telling his brother that "after one more Pooh book I must think of something else. In fact, it's time I tried a novel" (Thwaite p. 328). Christopher Robin was growing up, soon to leave for boarding school, and The House at Pooh Corner would be a farewell. But first there was an introduction to be made. Milne had bought his son a stuffed tiger, "Tigger", and told Shepard that he was longing to see the illustrations for this new character, who would become one of the author's most popular creations. Published on 11 October 1928 in an edition of 75,000 regular trade copies, The House at Pooh Corner was received by critics with a delight tinged by sadness. "The Times Literary Supplement congratulated Milne on avoiding 'the temptation to repeat his successful formula mechanically', though it was 'sad to see the stories end'" (Thwaite p. 336); but the stories have never ended for the millions of children who continue to wander the Hundred Acre Wood, where "a little boy and his bear will always be play … [Click Below for Full Description]

MILNE, A A
London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1928. London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1928. With Decorations by Ernest H. Shepard. Octavo. Original pink cloth, titles to spine and pictorial design to front board in gilt, top edge gilt, illustrated endpapers. With the dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard. Spine ends very slightly creased, 2 small sun spots to rear board. Otherwise a fine copy with the bright jacket, a few nicks. 336).
