COMMERCIAL ART]
1928. [COMMERCIAL ART]. GENDAI SHÔGYÔ BIJUTSU ZENSHÛ THE COMPLETE COMMERCIAL ARTIST 24v. Tokyo, ARS, Showa 3 [1928] 24 large slender 8vo. vols., 27.0 x 19.4 cm. This edition bound in paper wrappers. A remarkable compendium, heavily illustrated in color and b+w, exploring the whole world of commercial art, in Japan and abroad, for the professional. With remarkable articles by the leading proponents of Japanese advertising and commercial art of the day. One occasionally finds odd volumes of this thematically organized work, but it is very unusual thus, complete. Essential reference to late Taisho, early Showa culture. All but volume 7 have their original printed card slipcases. Also, the set seems to have belonged to a very literate reader. 15 of the 24 volumes have their original advance monthly "geppo" advertisements for the series laid in. Plus there are three ARS publishing company sale catalogs for books, an ARS monthly newsletter, an ARS order form, and one from Kawara Shoten. All quite interesting as they are contemporary advertisements for ARS, the foremost art critical publisher of the day. The set is a bit worn, but overall in good or better condition, with lots of additional material, as described.

Earhart, Amelia
New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1928. First edition. Number 22 of 150 copies of the limited first edition, signed by Earhart and the publisher and with an small American flag that was carried with Earhart across the Atlantic. A Fine copy of the book, sharp, square and unread. Amelia Earhart crafted a thrilling narrative for her first published work in 1928, detailing her first flight across the Atlantic with William Stultz. Combining actual log entries made during the voyage with childhood memories and her early interest in flight, Earhart's tale ends with a broader discussion of women and aviation, breaking ground for the women's rights movement in the mid 30's. She would later make the first female solo flight across the Atlantic and then disappear in the Pacific during her attempted first female circumnavigation of the globe. The mystery of Earhart's death has reemerged in recent years, with scientists asserting that her remains were found on the island of Nikomaroro rather than in a plane crash as long-presumed. Named one of National Geographic's "100 greatest adventure books of all time." "Anything which tends to annihilate distance destroys isolation, and brings the world and its' peoples closer together." (Earhart). Fine. Fine.

SKITALETS [Pseudonym of Stepan Gavrilovich Petrov].
Robunkaku, Nagoia. A very rare Japanese imprint. We are not aware of any other example having been on the market, and we could locate only two copies of this first edition in public institutions worldwide: in the Berlin State Library and the National Diet Library in Japan; neither Russian State library nor Russian National library seem to hold copies of this title. This is the first edition of literary sketches recollecting the lives of a highly disparate group of cultural and political figures, all of whom were known personally to the author. Those featured include: the writers Maxim Gorky, Leonid Andreev, Lev Tolstoi, and Nikolai Garin-Mikhailovskii, the singer Fedor Chaliapin, and the Marxist revolutionaries Vladimir Lenin and Georgii Plekhanov. Skitalets was the pseudonym of the Russian poet and essayist Stepan Gavrilovich Petrov (1869 - 1941). Born into a worker's family in Samara Province, Petrov became an early adherent of the revolutionary movement. After being excluded from a seminary college for political unreliability, he spent four years travelling around the south of Russia, where he would later meet many of the cultural and political luminaries featured in this work. Among them was Lenin, whom he first met in 1889. Petrov wrote throughout his youth, but did not publish any of his writing until 1897, when he started writing articles for local newspapers in Samara. The following year, he came into contact with Gorky, who became a close companion and a strong influence on his writing. Petrov's first literary work, a short story, was published in 1900, and two yea … [Click Below for Full Description]

Milne, Alan Alexander
Alan Alexander Milne (1928) ‘The House at Pooh Corner’, US signed limited edition, published by E.P. Dutton & Co. One of only 250 copies of which this is no. 155. Signed on the limitation page by A.A. Milne and the illustrator Ernest Shepard. Condition: a near fine copy and remarkably well preserved. The salmon coloured boards retain their original colour. The slightest of shelf wears as pictured. Gilded on all three sides. No inscriptions, stamps, nor bookplates of previous owners of any sorts. A lovely copy. The American published two limited edition variants; a large paper variant in plane boards, and this pink (salmon) variant. The latter seems to be much scarcer. Very few copies will have survived in such beautiful condition. A.A. Milne needs no introductions. His ‘Winnie the Pooh’ books have catapulted him, and Christopher Robin and his plushy toys into stardom. ‘The House at Pooh Corner’ was the fourth and last book in the series and Milne vouched to not write another story centred around the Bear. ‘Winnie the Pooh’ has been voted as the most popular children book series by the general public. Generations of children have enjoyed its charm and Disney popularised the charming world even more. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Woolf, Virginia
New York: Crosby Gaige, 1928. First American Edition. Near Fine. Number 259 of 800 copies for sale signed by the author. A lovely Near Fine copy of the book with a large bookplate on the front paste-down and minor offsetting to the half-title, otherwise appearing unread. Gilt top-edge. Released at the height of Woolf's literary celebrity, Orlando was a thrill to contemporary reviewers: "Those who open Orlando expecting another novel in the vein of Mrs. Dalloway and To the Lighthouse will discover, to their joy or sorrow, that once more Mrs. Woolf has broken with tradition and convention and has set out to explore still another fourth dimension of writing...In this new work she is largely preoccupied with the time element in character and human relationships, and with a statement of the exact complexion of that intangible moment...which we refer to as the present" (Contemporary New York Times review). Blending literary narrative with feminist theory, Orlando explores Einstein's theory of relativity through the lens of a single life that is spread and evolves throughout centuries. "At the beginning of the book, Orlando is a [Elizabethan era] boy of 16, melancholy, indolent, loving solitude and given to writing poetry...the book ends on the 11th October 1928, and Orlando is a thoroughly modern matron of 36 who has published a successful book of poems and has evolved a hard-earned philosophy of life" (Cleveland). The result is an allegory that questions the stability of any human category -- individual character, gender, selfhood -- and a novel that considers how time cause … [Click Below for Full Description]

BROOKS, COLLIN
J. H. Sears & Company, New York, 1928. An excellent copy of an extremely rare mystery novel. WorldCat lists only 8 copies world wide. Published in the UK by Hutchinson. Even though Brooks borrows from Conan Doyle, among others, he manages to breathe new life into a rather classic story. A husband and wife team, he an Investigator, she a Medical Doctor, take on cases no-one else can solve. This story has a "locked-room" puzzler, ghosts, hidden doorways, underground tunnels, and yet, it is told with great style and considerable humorous banter between the spouses. So, not only is it scarce, but it makes a very good read and an excellent addition to the sophisticated collector. The book is as bright and tight as the day it was published. The dust jacket has some minor wear to the spine ends and is very lightly sun-faded at the burgundy lettering. Listed in Hubin. Near Fine / Near Fine. Woolf, Virginia
New York: Crosby Gaige, 1928. First American Edition. The result is an allegory that questions the stability of any human category -- individual character, gender, selfhood -- and a novel that considers how time causes change on mic … [Click Below for Full Description]
