James Joyce

The pages are clean and free of any foxing. This is the limited edition #640 of 800 copies signed by James Joyce. About the Author: James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (1882 - 1941) was an Irish expatriate author of the 20th century. He is known for his landmark novel Ulysses (1922) and its controversial successor Finnegans Wake (1939), as well as the short story collection Dubliners (1914) and the semi-autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). Although he spent most of his adult life outside Ireland, Joyce's psychological and fictional universe is firmly rooted in his native Dublin, the city which provides the settings and much of the subject matter for all his fiction. In particular, his tempestuous early relationship with the Irish Roman Catholic Church is reflected through a similar inner conflict in his recurrent alter ego Stephen Dedalus. As the result of his minute attentiveness to a personal locale and his self-imposed exile and influence throughout Europe, notably in Paris, Joyce paradoxically became one of the most cosmopolitan yet one of the most regionally focused of all the English language writers of his time. Spine gently rolled and slightly faded, spine ends and tips lightly worn, covers a little marked and soiled, occasional light foxing to contents. A very good copy. First UK edition, first impression, a remarkable association copy, from the library of Aleister Crowley with his ownership inscription to the front free endpaper, "Aleister Crowley (a present from Montgomery Evans)". Evans was an aspiring American writer, journalist, and notable book collector, who with whom Crowley had an extensive correspondence. Evans took great pleasure from his relationship Crowley, carefully preserving his letters, many of which are now stored at the Indiana University Lilly Library. Crowley has annotated the text in a number of places (pp. 34, 58, 66, 72, and 100), often to add relevant anecdotes to the text. The most notable, on p. 34, is in response to the character of Nadine, described as, "fourteen: No man had kissed her. she knew only what had been told her". Crowley adds, in his typically provocative style, that, "This seems to me far-fetched. The drummer of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (who married a Wall St broker named Norman) was masturbating her uncle at a nickel a time when she was 8: at 11 she saw she was being chiselled, and stood out for a dime. JOYCE, James.
New York: The Modern Library, 1928. Octavo. Original blue leatherette, spine lettered in gilt, publisher's device to front cover in gilt, yellow illustrated endpapers, top edge blue. Housed in a custom blue cloth solander box. Spine rolled and a little creased, minor wear to spine ends, a couple of small marks to head of rear cover, slight leaching of top edge dye onto upper margins of book block, faint staining to gutters of endpapers and foot of prelims, slight split to front inner hinge, but holding, closed tear to fore edge of pp. 105-6, partially reenforced with a stamp; a very good copy. First Modern Library edition, first printing, first issue "leatherette" binding, with the ownership inscription of Ezra Pound to the half title, "Pound, please forward return to Albergo Rapallo", "12. 70-132-137-140-161-186-", and the blind stamp of Pound's library at Brunnenburg to the title page. Pound had moved to Rapallo, from Paris, with his wife, Dorothy, at the end of 1924. Whilst there they lived in a fifth floor apartment above the Albergo Rapallo restaurant until their eviction in 1943. A wonderful association copy of the novel that Pound was responsible for first publishing, indicating a long-held appreciation of Joyce's works. Pound first contacted Joyce in December 1913, after Yeats showed him "I Hear an Army", the concluding poem in Chamber Music (1907). Joyce subsequently permitted Pound to print the poem in his 1914 issue of the annual literary journal Des Imagistes, and Pound became Joyce's de facto literary agent. Crucially, it was Pound who arranged for the serial p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hsia Chairman of Governing Board, Community Church of Shanghai, August 8, 1950 loosely inserted. The eight page introduction by O.M. Green, editor of the North China Daily News, offers a very interesting picture of the city of Shanghai in the late 1920s. O.M. Green's opinions are interesting and no doubt reflect the thoughts of many others at the time. Certain of the great benefit and superiority of Western ways and Westerner governance he gives only limited recognition to the contribution of the local Chinese people. For example "Unfortunately the Chinese, as always, have spoilt a good case by exaggeration. Young China's demand, first voiced at the Versailles Conference and since become the slogan of all students and politicians, for the unconditional surrender of the Settlements is wholly unreasonable and unjust and would in all probability lead to the speedy financial ruin of a thousand times as many Chinese as foreigners … [Click Below for Full Description]

James Boswell
Privately printed by William Edwin Rudge; Viking Press; Oxford University Press 1928-1936. Thousands of pages; aquatone facsimile plates, some tipped in; most volumes 4to, one tall folio and a couple of smaller folios or 8vo. Red paper-covered boards, printed title label on spines; slipcases also with title labels on spines. This work initially consisted of 18 volumes designed by Bruce Rogers and printed by William Edwin Rudge. Joseph Blumenthal characterizes this production as "magnificent examples of the arts of the printed book" (Bruce Rogers: A Life in Letters, p. 105). And, according to Rogers, "I have chosen a style flexible enough to accommodate the various papers, journals and documents comprised in the collection. No especial effort has been made to secure an air of antiquity, but by the importation of a recent English reproduction of John Baskervillle’s famous eighteenth century types it has been possible to present the text in a form typographically harmonious with Boswell’s individual mode of expression" (from the prospectus). Printed on handmade Maidstone paper for the quartos and Ronneby for the folio volume. The aquatone plates reproduce a number of manuscript documents in actual size. No. 253 of 570 sets, comprised of volumes 1 to 15, plus two later-issued related volumes (Boswell’s Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides with Samuel Johnson, LL.D. [Viking Press, 1936] and The Private Papers of James Boswell: A Catalogue [Oxford University Press, 1931]), issued with a similar red design scheme as the original volumes and sometimes considered part of the full set, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Norris, Frank; Carter Burden
New York: Doubleday, Doran & Co, 1928. Limited Edition. Octavo. In ten volumes limited to 245 sets. The present set is number 205 with an original manuscript page within publisher's envelope laid in which has 36 lines plus the forty lines he added which are central to what made the McTeague a classic (see image) cf. P. 342-343. One of the greatest novels on the lust for gold. Its richness which begins in San Francisco and leads to Death Valley has led scholars to place his ideas in the tradition beginning with Dante and continuing to Flaubert and Tolstoy. (Erich Von Stroheim made it into the classic film Greed). While he was in the middle of his studies at Harvard in 1895, he began the composition of the novel. Records there showed he checked out Fillebrown's work on Operative Dentistry as well as the Inferno. The Death Valley section which comes from the manuscript page where he made significant changes in the wide margins of the folio manuscript. As Charles S. Watson wrote: "McTeague's final torment completes fittingly the previous portion of the novel, which describes how passions like greed produce a hell on earth. " He notes that in the early 1930's the National Park Service recognized the name "Dante's View" as the best known view of Death Valley. His other works in this definitive set of his works in the set include: not only the Octopus, the Pit, The third Circle, a Deal in Wheat, the Responsibilities of the novelist, but all his collected writings. An absolutely fine set bound in vellum paper covered boards centrally stamped in gilt, spine lettered and decorated i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lajos Kassák, József Nádass, eds.
Budapest: Munka, 1928. Quarto 25x18cm., original wrappers bound in cloth, 320pp. The first year, complete with ten numbers of Kassák’s journal which ran to 1939 with 65 numbers It arose after he had closed the Dokumentum series in 1927, which he founded upon returning to Hungary from exile in 1926. Each of Kassák’s journals reveal both the mind of the editor and the zeitgeist of the era. The journal Ma (1914-25) had the largest reach in terms of authors and vision, drawing on an international program and which reached its greatest attainment while Kassak was exiled in Vienna; Dokumentum still hoped and directed its contents for an international readership. With Munka, the focus began to narrow to specific Hungarian social and economic concerns, as well as political and artistic. The philosophical dimensions became embedded in the contents rather than espoused on their own. The first number of Munka takes up where Dokumentum left off, with a broad scope. The numbers of this year carry forth a constructivist page format while there is more attention increasingly drawn to local (Hungarian) issues. Like its predecessors, Munka was a goad to the right-wing establishment and finally was closed for good by the authorities, with the working members arrested. During its life, the visual art shifted towards photography and photo documentation. The one photo book it published, A mi életünkböl, provoked government confiscation. Contributors of these numbers include Ernö Kállai, Nádass, Pál Bor, Illyes, Hannes Meyer, Pál Justus, Tibor Déry, László Farkas, original linocuts by János Kmet … [Click Below for Full Description]

This book was written by the Marchioness of Londonderry, Edith Helen Vane-Tempest Stewart (1878-1959), a political hostess and writer who was a supporter of the Suffragette Movement, and was heavily involved in Conservative and Unionist politics (Urquhart). As she notes in the Foreword, the Marchioness wrote these stories as letters to her daughter while she was away in Spain, and they were later typed and published. The stories interact with Irish myth and legend to various extents throughout and the author notes that ‘they do not pretend to be in the least accurate'. The author also acknowledges her use of Ella Young's Celtic Wonder Tales ‘notably in Chapters II. and XX.'(vii-viii), which were suitably written for very young children. The book received some degree of prominent attention at the time of its public … [Click Below for Full Description]

NIETZSCHE, Friedrich.
Fanfrolico Press (1928), London. Hardcover. Folio. Unpaginated: (86pp including plates). Half black morocco leather over deep blue cloth boards, with gilt titling to front board and spine. Top-edge gilt, deckled fore and bottom-edges. Title-page vignette and six largely full-page plates by Norman Lindsay. Decorative capitals in blue throughout. Edition limited to five hundred and fifty copies numbered copies printed on Arnold's Handmade paper. A beautifully illustrated translation into English of Nietzsche's 'The Antichrist,' ('Der Antichrist. Fluch auf das Christentum'). Although not a "magickal" work in the usual sense - Nietzsche's polemical attack on Christian ethics and morality - which he felt encouraged a weakness and slave-mentality that was the antithesis of that needed to effect the transformation of man into "super-man", provided the sort of philosophical underpinning upon which much modern magical thought is based. Nietzsche's work, and in particular his 'Antichrist' had a profound effect on Aleister Crowley, who listed Nietzsche as Saint of the Ecclesia Gnostica Catholica and made numerous references to the importance of his works in books such as "The Confessions" and "Magick Without Tears." The translator of this edition, P. R. "Inky" Stephensen" was an Australian author and publisher who befriended Aleister Crowley and published a number of his works under the Mandrake Press imprint in the late 1920s, as well as compiling "The Legend of Aleister Crowley." The engravings are by Norman Lindsay (1879 – 1969), the famous Australian artist and writer who was well … [Click Below for Full Description]

A very fine copy of this beautifully-bound work with evocative illustrations from the important Canadian artist Clarence Gagnon. BORGES, Jorge Luis
Buenos Aires: Colleccion Indice, M. Gleizer, Editor, 1928. Buenos Aires: Colleccion Indice, M. Gleizer, Editor,, 1928. Octavo. Original printed wrappers. Spine tanned, slight splitting to joints but holding firm with discreet amateur repair to front joint, minor marks and toning to the rest of wrappers, minor foxing within, a very good copy. First edition, first printing, signed by Borges on the title page, of this scarce and very early collection of philosophical and literary essays. This copy derives from the estate of Borges's friend and translator Donald A. Yates - though without ownership mark it has a laid-in slip with some manuscript notes in Yates's hand, as well as the the torn paper bookmark laid in on the page of Borges's signature as is typical of the books from his library. Yates was a prime mover in bringing Borges to the English speaking world through his translation (joint with James Irby) of the hugely influential short story collection Labyrinths (1962), which he worked on while living in Buenos Aires. He was also responsible for getting Borges his very first published appearance in English, when he brought the the story "The Garden of Forking Paths" to the attention of Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine (published August 1948, trans. Anthony Boucher). Clearly signed for Yates in the 1960s, 1970s, or 1980s, in Borges's blind hand, this is a great association copy.
