DOYLE, Jean Conan, née LECKIE (1874-1940), [DOYLE, Sir Arthur Conan, association]
1st November 1928.. ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LETTER WRITTEN BY SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE'S SECOND WIFE. Written in black ink over both sides of two sheets of headed note paper from the R.M.S. Windsor Castle, Union-Castle Line. With the original envelope addressed to a Mrs. Hewitt of London, SW7. Stamp and postmarks from South Africa, dated 12th November 1928. Envelope torn open, as expected; lightly browned with a few marks. Letter is near-fine. Jean Leckie, Mrs. Doyle since 1907, here writes to a friend in London from aboard ship as she travels with her husband to South Africa, where they embarked on a Spiritualist lecture tour. As is clear from the letter, their mission was very much to convert as many people as possible to their religion - an endeavour in which they seem to have been reasonably successful, even at sea. She begins her letter by reporting a 'fearful storm', in which, 'had the ship rolled 2 degrees more, she must have gone over, and not a soul would have survived.'

Juozas Petrulis / Bernardas Bucas cover design
Kaunas 1928 - Lithuanian language. Enlarged format. Octavo 16 x 24 cm. Weight 110 gr. Wrappers, 99 [1] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition, without any losses, damages, remarks and stains. Soft creases across cover corners, minor foxing spots to the back cover edges; internally occasional highlighting of text passages with blue pen. Juozas Petrulis (1895 - 1982) was Lithuanian poet, playwright, literary historian and critic, scholar of literature and Lithuanian folklore. In 1924 he started studying and after became scholar of literature in Kauno „Aušros“ gimmnazija (Kaunas „Aušros“ Gymnasium). Here he began to write articles and book reviews. In 1928 he published an anthology named „Aušros“ poezija. Aušra or Auszra (literally: dawn) was the first national Lithuanian newspaper, which was published in 1883-1886. Even though only forty issues were published and the circulation did not exceed 1,000, it was a significant event as it marked the beginnings of the Lithuanian national rebirth that eventually resulted in an independent Lithuanian State (1918–1940). Due to financial difficulties the printing was discontinued in 1886. Aušra published patriotic poetry about Lithuanians historical fate by such famous poets as Maironis, Andrius Jonas Vištelis-Višteliauskas, Juozas Andziulaitis-Kalnenas, Jonas Macys-Kekštas etc; works of the writers of the previous generation preserved in manuscripts - Dionizas Poška, Vytautas Ažukalnis, Antanas Baranauskas; historical literary articles by Stanislovas D … [Click Below for Full Description]

Barnes, Djuna
Paris: Printed for the Author, and Sold by Edward W. Titus, 1928. First Edition. Full vellum self wraps. Fine/Fine. Barnes, Djuna. 1st edition (in English), the most deluxe and limited state from a total edition of 1,050. Number 4 of only 10 copies on Verge de Vidalon, with both covers of the vellum dustjacket and all 22 line drawings painted in color by Barnes with her own hand and signed by her as "A Lady of Fashion." And our copy is also a contemporary presentation copy, inscribed to Lady Rothermere, (in ink), signed again by Barnes, this time with her real name, and dated "Paris, 1928." Original full vellum self-wrappers, vellum dustjacket, more delicate than a sea monkey, yet fine condition (others aren't fine), a tribute to the care Lady Rothermere took with the contents of her library and, needless to say but I'll say it anyway, a rare book when it's 1 of 10 (no copy at auction in 50 years), a state often mentioned but never seen for sale. Of the 1,040 remaining copies of the 1st edition, the 1,000 on Alfa were neither colored nor signed, and the 40 on Rives, were colored (with less attention) but also not signed. This is the Paris lesbian's roman à clef, written under a pseudonym because of legal uncertainties, and Edward Titus (the printer) blocked out his name on the title page for the same concerns. So the establishment searched the left bank to identify the author with the focus of an undertaker scrutinizing the obituaries for trade, but Barnes' decision to inscribe this copy with her real name begins to explain how word of the Almanack's authorship became publi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Woon, Basil [Dillon]
New York: Horace Liveright, 1928. Octavo, x, [4], 284 pages. Illustrated with 16 photo-reproductions of scenes of Cuba. First edition, first printing. Playwright and journalist Basil Woon's fourth book. Woon left his native London at the age of 16 and made his way to Alaska, where he founded a newspaper outside of Nome. His newspaper career took him around the world, including a stint in Mexico covering the revolution. A number of his books were charming depictions of a bon vivant's life in Paris, or Southern California, or the Riviera. His New or times obituary of June 5th, 1974, describes him as "a publicity man for Cuba and this book fits that bill nicely, as the author states, "This book was not written as an "impression" of Cuba, nor as a guide. I have merely amused myself by setting down on paper what a tourist to Cuba will see, do (and drink) in a land where personal liberty and climate are blended in just the right setting of beauty and romance" (from the foreword). While not a cocktail manual, and containing no recipes, the book does an admirable job of setting the stage for drinking in Cuba, with chapter titles including, "Have one in Havana", "Where everyone is drinking and no a soul is drunk", "A jug of rum beneath a cocoanut tree, a dinner-dance, and thou", "Naughty-naughty nights", "All the way to Bacardi town", "The rum that cured a king" and others. Decorated cloth-covered boards with some spotting and abrasion; spine somewhat darkened and spotted. Spine a bit cocked, otherwise very good. Lacking the rare dust jacket. Good. Somewhat cryptic previous owner in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Prague: self-published, 1928. Quarto (28 × 19.5 cm). Original staple-stitched gray pictorial wrappers; 26 leaves of lithographed or stencil-copied text and images, with 6 full-page drawings by Vovk. Spine extremities beginning to split; still a very good copy. Third and last book of poems by Khmeliuk (sometimes spelled Khmeluk, 1903-1986), a Ukrainian post-impressionist painter and poet mostly active in the emigration. After his involvement in the Ukrainian-Soviet Civil War of 1917-1920, Khmeliuk, who was originally from Lviv, studied at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts and after 1923 at Charles University in Prague, where he developed a highly unusual style incorporating elements of Dada, futurism, and surrealism. One recent scholar describes the present work as combining "nightmares, hallucinations, humor, parody, statistical details, newspaper articles, and historical facts in a manner that resembles Breton's surrealism" (Anna Bila, Ukrains'kyi literaturnyi avanhard, 368). Daily life in the Czech capital features prominently in the various texts. One of the poems is entitled "Hymn to high-valued currency"; another ("Praise of the fish") descends into a kind of zaum'-like nonsense language. After 1928, Khmeliuk lived in Paris and played a prominent role in the Ukrainian art community. His work was exhibited worldwide and is held in many noted collections and museums. With wrapper design, illustrations, and handwritten text, all stencil-copied by cyclostyle, by Yury Vovk (1899-1961), another Ukrainian modernist artist living in Prague at the time. [Riga], 1928. Original postcard, 14.3 × 9.5 cm. Unused. Trace of moisture to corner (mostly visible only on verso), still good or better. Rare postcard showing a vivid expressionist drawing by the Latvian modernist graphic artist, set designer, and book illustrator Voldemars Valdmanis (1905-1966). Born in Tambov, Russian Empire, Valdmanis studied in Cesis, Latvia, before settling in Riga, where he worked in Uga Skulme's art studio, before moving on to work as a set designer for the Latvian National Theatre. These two postcards are somewhat similar in design to similar Latvian communist posters designed by Niklavs Strunke and Janis Liepins in the 1920s. The first postcard with Valdmanis signature and the year to upper right of the image, the second is unsigned.

EINSTEIN, ALBERT; BOHR, NIELS; HEISENBERG, WERNER; ET AL
Paris: np, 1928. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of the official report of the proceedings of the 1927 Fifth Solvay Conference, generally considered the most important gathering in the history of physics. "Chaired by Dutch physicist Hendrik Lorentz and running from October 24 to 29, 1927, the fifth physics conference was devoted to 'electrons and photons' but was dominated by disputes about the ideas behind quantum mechanics. Beginning in 1925, Danish physicist Niels Bohr, German physicists Werner Heisenberg and Max Born, among others, had formed what came to be known as the 'Copenhagen interpretation' of quantum mechanics, which postulated that the indeterminacy in the theory (i.e., that only the probability of a result could be predicted) was fundamental and should be accepted by scientists. There was no underlying deterministic order to be found. Some physicists, most notably German physicist Albert Einstein, did not accept the Copenhagen interpretation and felt that its reliance on indeterminacy showed that quantum mechanics still was not a complete theory. This dispute was foregrounded at the 1927 conference. Bohr, Heisenberg, and Born were not able to win Einstein over, but the dissemination of the Copenhagen interpretation among physicists was accelerated by the conference and it eventually became the prevailing view of quantum mechanics" (Britannica). The Bohr-Einstein debate that dominated the conference "is considered to be one of the most famous intellectual debates of the 20th century, and probably the most famous one between physicists" (Bricmont, Making Sens … [Click Below for Full Description]

Khmeliuk, Vasyl' and Iuryi Vovk, illustrator
self-published, Prague. A highly unusual book, which fus … [Click Below for Full Description]
