"On the Eve of His Departure for the Antarctic Commander Byrd Explains Why He Attempts the Exploration of the Frozen Continent by Air and Discusses Problems He Must Solve" - title page. Two tipped-in typed letters on front and back pastedowns, both printed on Byrd Antarctic Expedition letterhead and addressed to Minnesota businessman and founder of General Mills (here addressed as the president of the Washburn Crosby Company), James Ford Bell. The first, signed by Byrd and dated May 24, 1928, thanks Bell for a contribution of $200, disconsolately adding, "As you perhaps realize, this expedition is very costly and we have been having a difficult time raising the necessary funds. I want you to know how much we appreciate your donating towards the expedition, and whatever success we have in the Antarctic you may feel that you have had a part in it." The second letter, signed by Captain H. H. Railey, Byrd's personal representative, is dated December 18, 1928, and passes along an Antarctic new year's greeting: "In a radiogram from the Ross Sea, received today, Commander Byrd has asked me to convey to you his heartiest wishes for a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. VENDOME HENRIETTE DUCHESSE DE
1928. Voir description. [Click Below for Full Description]

London, Cambridge University Press, 1928. Royal8vo. In the original printed wrappers. In "The Biochemical Journal", Vol. 22, 1928. Entire issue offered. Wrappers with nicks and ligt overall soiling. A tear to last 7 leaves. Internally fine and clean. Pp. 1387-1409. [Entire issue: Pp. (8), 1341-1575, (2), XIV, (1).]. First printing of Szent-Györgyi's landmark paper in which he for the first time discovered and isolated "hexuronic acid" or "ascorbic acid", today commonly known as vitamin C. In 1937 he was awarded the Nobel in Medicine "for his discoveries in connection with the biological combustion processes, with special reference to vitamin C and the catalysis of fumaric acid"."Szent-Györgyi is most notably associated with the discovery of vitamin C. The discovery of vitamins themselves was recognized in 1929 in a Nobel Prize to Christiaan Eijkman and Gowland Hopkins. The search for vitamin C was then well underway in several labs. Ironically, the compound had already been isolated by Szent-Györgyi. Though no one-not even Szent-Györgyi-yet knew its identity." (DSB). "In 1928 Szent-Györgyi had proposed that hexuronic acid, a highly reducing substance that he had isolated from oranges, cabbages and adrenal glands, was responsible for the anti-scurvy properties of fruit and vegetables, that is, that hexuronic acid was vitamin C. Zilva disagreed, citing work that he had done showing that vitamin activity and reducing power were independent of one another. There the matter lay for four years until, in 1932, Szent-Györgyi, carried out experiments to see whether hexuronic acid wo … [Click Below for Full Description]

D'ARTAGNAN BOOKS This is a first edition in good condition. It was published by Jonathan Cape in 1928. This book has the relevant spelling mistake 'whip' on page 50. This is the book that when published in 1928, was banned under the Obscene Publications Act. 'A girl is baptized as Stephen, and it soon becomes apparent that she is not like other girls, especially when she reaches maturity and falls passionately in love with another woman.' This is a 1st Edition / 1st Printing. Condition: Book - Good - rubbing/bumping/wear to the corners and edges, slight marking to the covers, page edges and a couple of pages, a slight spine lean, some creasing to a couple of pages, a faint wave to the page block, some foxing/discolouration to the page edges and several pages, soft tanning to the pages and there is a previous owner's name inside. Geoffrey Chaucer
Stratford-upon-Avon: 1928. See pictures. Protected in slipcase; still spines faded with some thumbing, some thumbing and shelf marks to boards, and wear to edges and corners. Mylar wraps used to be taped to the inside of each binding, their marks are still on the pastedown and flyleaf (yellowed tape strip ghosts). Pencil bookseller notes on blank unpaginated front endpapers. Front endpapers of volume two have a little soiling at the bottom of the fore edge. Volume threes endpapers were not cut, and someone tore them 2" along fore edge, in attempting to open them. There is sometimes a little more crash visible at gutter than I'm used to, but I think it may just be due to the Shakespeare Head's binding style. On rare occasion there may be the lightest spot in the paper, or thumb mark, but I really didn't notice any; text block is quite clean. Natural wave due to high quality paper making process. A highly regarded edition of Chaucer's Tales, printed on the beautiful paper of the Shakespeare Head Press, incorporating miniatures and woodcuts from historic printings and manuscripts of this same work, some hand-coloured. A wonderful opportunity to own a set that is normally quite expensive. Found in an estate, it is unclear where volumes five through eight are. These first four volumes contain all of the Canterbury Tales. Volumes five through eight contained other Chaucer works (so missing are): Boece de Consolac, Troilus and Criseyde, The Romaunt of the Rose, and The House of Fame with Minor Poems. About the Work - The Canterbury Tales (Middle English: Tales of Caunterbury) is … [Click Below for Full Description]

1928. Condition: Good. Hardbound compilation of: AMAZING STORIES ANNUAL, 1927 AMAZING STORIES QUARTERLY, Winter Edition 1928 AMAZING STORIES QUARTERLY, Spring Edition 1928 8-1/2 x 11-3/4, 414 total pages Hugo Gernsback, editor. This is a hard bound volume that contains the original 1927 Amazing Stories Annual, as well as the first two Amazing Stories Quarterly editions (Volume 1, Number 1 and Number 2)(Winter and Spring 1928). Contains the first printing of The Mastermind of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I believe this is a contemporary (possibly 1928) compilation. Please note, however, that the original magazine covers were not included in this compilation, nor were the back covers; only three pages of advertising are included, being the last page of each issue. Also not included is the table of contents of the Winter 1928 Quarterly. It's not a missing page, but was likely just excluded in error. Other than that, each of the three volumes seem to be complete. Pages are supple with standard age tanning. Someone had practiced drawing (a human head that was featured in the page 32 illustration) in pencil on pages 31 and 32 of the annual, and there are pen marks on the title page of the same (see photo). Otherwise no marks on pages. Some discoloration here and there but nothing major. There are a few pages with minor tears. The binding itself has some light staining on the front and the fabric spine cover is about 80 percent detached, though this is only the outer fabric, not affecting the actual binding. Fiction includes: • THE MASTER MIND OF MARS by Edgar Rice Burroughs • TH … [Click Below for Full Description]
