James Joyce
Description: Signed James Joyce - Anna Livia Plurabelle Book 1928 #640/800 About Item: Up for sale, Signed James Joyce - Anna Livia Plurabelle Book 1928 #640/800. This book is in good condition. The gilt lettering and decoration to the spine and front cover is bright. There is some light rubbing to the outside boards. There are no bookplates, signatures or markings of any kind in the book. The pages are clean and free of any foxing. This is the limited edition #640 of 800 copies signed by James Joyce. About the Author: James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (1882 - 1941) was an Irish expatriate author of the 20th century. He is known for his landmark novel Ulysses (1922) and its controversial successor Finnegans Wake (1939), as well as the short story collection Dubliners (1914) and the semi-autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). Although he spent most of his adult life outside Ireland, Joyce's psychological and fictional universe is firmly rooted in his native Dublin, the city which provides the settings and much of the subject matter for all his fiction. In particular, his tempestuous early relationship with the Irish Roman Catholic Church is reflected through a similar inner conflict in his recurrent alter ego Stephen Dedalus. As the result of his minute attentiveness to a personal locale and his self-imposed exile and influence throughout Europe, notably in Paris, Joyce paradoxically became one of the most cosmopolitan yet one of the most regionally focused of all the English language writers of his time. Kehillath Anshe Mayriv
1928. Publishers cloth. 8vo. 183 pages. 24 cm. First edition. Bound in black cloth with gilt lettering, includes pastedown photograph of the new temple of the congregation. Includes multiple essays on the history of the oldest congregation in Chicago, illustrations and advertisements throughout. ┬ôKehillat Anshe Ma'arab, the first Jewish congregation, was established Nov. 3, 1847, when a constitution was adopted and signed by fourteen members. Morris L. Leopold, a young man of twenty-six, born in Laubheim, Württemberg, was elected president. The Jewish Burial-Ground Society turned over to the congregation all its property, including the cemetery, and dissolved. Kehillat Anshe Ma'arab held its first regular service in a private room on the second floor of a building on the southwest corner of Lake and Wells streets, and in 1849 leased a lot on Clark street, between Adams and Quincy streets where the post-office now stands) , on which it erected a frame synagogue. In 1853 this congregation established a day-school, where Hebrew was taught in addition to the regular common-school curriculum. This school was in operation for twenty years. In 1856 a new cemetery on Green Bay road (now North Clark street) and Belmont avenue was purchased. In 1857 the old burial-ground, having been included in the city extensions, had to be abandoned. In 1882 the ground was sold to the park commissioners, and it is now merged in Lincoln Park. On the date of the closing of the old burial-ground (June 11, 1857) the first interment in the new cemetery took place. In 1868 the congregation purchased the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Scarce Serge Gladky Pochoirs, Nouvelles Compositions Décoratives, Plates 16, 29, 40, c. 1928 This is a lot of three very striking pochoir (handprinted mechanical stenciling technique) prints, from designs by French architect, designer, and graphic artist Serge Gladky (1880-1930s). The plates are from the folio "Nouvelles Compositions Décoratives (1re Série)", published by Editions d'Art Charles Moreau, Paris, circa 1928. Printed on cream-colored, heavy woven French vélin paper, these plates feature three very understated and stylish geometric Art Deco designs in black, opaque white and subtly shaded graytones. The images on these plates are in very good condition considering their age, with good definition and no scuffs, scratches or rubbing to the surface. The edges of the paper show roughness and wear; a few small creases on the edges from old folds, most of the corners are bent, one dark spot at center right of Plate 16, no tears or any other damage to the image area. The paper shows a slight overall age-related yellowing. [If these were matted and framed, none of the damage to the paper borders would be visible. The actual images themselves are in great shape.] These plates have never been framed, matted or trimmed. Labeled in black letterpress text lower left "NOUVELLES COMPOSITIONS DÉCORATIVES (1re SÉRIE)" and with the plate number lower right "PL. 16", "PL. 29", and "PL. 40", respectively. Dimensions: Image Size--Plate 16 (6" wide x 9-3/4" high), Plate 29 (7" wide x 9-1/4" high), Plate 40 (7" wide x 9-3/8" high); Sheet Size--9-3/4" wide x 12-3/4" high.

Robinson Jeffers
The Book Club of California Printed by the Grabhorn Press, 1928. Condition: Near fine - Signed. Number 32 of 310 copies, octavo size, 62 pp., signed by Robinson Jeffers and Ansel Adams, with an original photo of Jeffers and Albert Bender slipped in. "God is / ...he that walks lightening-naked on the / Pacific, that laces the sun with planets / The heart of the atom with electrons." A stunning production of poems by Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962), the volume signed by him, with a frontisportrait of the author by Ansel Adams which is signed by him in pencil, and an original photo of Jeffers at his famous Carmel home, Tor House, with his patron and friend Albert Bender (1866-1941). Albert Maurice Bender was a noted San Francisco patron of the arts and bibliophile; in addition to being a prominent member of Bay Area book clubs such as the Book Club of California and the Roxburghe Club (of which he was a founding member), he also aided many well-known artists at the beginning of their careers; this is especially true of Ansel Adams, whose first published portfolio was financed by Bender. Of the fifteen poems printed in this volume, five had previously appeared in book form and five in magazines; the remainder were published here for the first time. Altogether this volume offers a unique glimpse of three influential figures from the Bay Area arts/literary renaissance in the early 20th century. Moskau, Gosizdat, 1928. 91 S., 1 Bl. Mit 1 Falttafel. 8°, Orig.-Karton nach Entfurf El. Lissitzkys. Original-Ausgabe. - Kat. Very good. This is a great quartered quartersawn oak revolving rotating bookcase. Much like the cases made by the Danner Co of Canton Ohio. Obviously, the difference is the size-----just 6 inches high. I sell antique salesman samples often and am thinking that is what this is but am not sure. The case has 12 miniature books which I know many people collect. So either a salesman sample or a bookcase for miniature books-----I'll let you decide. Either way very neat piece and nicely constructed with top portion revolving around the base. Book titles include : Christmas Stories, The Tempest, Sonnets, The Story of the Coach, 1928 Engagement Calendar, Rubaiyat, Child's Bible, Aesop, English Dictionary, Love's Labour Lost, The Little Bible, and Lilliput. The books are in good condition, some leather bound but most not, although I have not examine each one in detail. Overall size of the rotating bookcase is 6 high and 4 wide. Neat piece which is not commonly found. Email any day (see email address above---I normally check email several times each day) for any questions you may have. A word about condition. Thomas, Jerry; Herbert Asbury, ed.
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1928. First Asbury edition. Hardcover. 8vo. li,(3),169,(1)pp. Yellow cloth printed in Aquatone by the Edward Stern Co. Top edge stained green. Illustrated. Index. This is the first cocktail recipe book published in the United States, first appearing in 1862. The 1928 edition is the first edition to appear under Asbury's edit, and it was very popular, even though it appeared during Prohibition. There is a stain on the foredge of the rear board with a light stain on the foredge of the final 10 pages else this is a near fine copy. The scarce dustwrapper has light foredge stains, lacks a bit at the top edge on front and back, is rubbed, split at folds, a few closed marginal tears, and has an archival tape repair to the inside of the spine; still it gives a very good appearance. Finding this book in it dustwrapper is a rare experience. Near fine / Very good. Item #18906.

[Click Below for Full Description]

JOYCE, James.
New York Crosby Gaige, 1928. FIRST EDITION, no. 3 of six numbered copies of 50 COPIES ON PALE GREEN-TINTED PAPER, from an overall limitation of 850, 8vo., title previously detached cleanly at gutter now with neat reversible tissue paper repair to verso, chip from fore-edge of a preliminary blank leaf, slight separation at upper hinge, bookplate to front pastedown, publisher's black cloth lettered in gilt on the spine and with triangular gilt design on upper cover, top edge gilt, presented in morocco-backed cloth drop-back box. The first edition of Anna Livia Plurabelle by James Joyce, the text that was to become chapter eight in Finnegans Wake, and introduce Joyce readers to the character that fellow Irish author Edna O'Brien was to describe as 'the most accessible and indeed beloved character conceived by Joyce'. Slocum and Cahoon note that: 'Of these 50 copies [on light green paper] probably 6 were offered for sale by the publisher. These were numbered 1 to 6, with the following notice on p.[iv] in the handwriting of Crosby Gaige: This is one of 6 copies on green paper. Crosby Gaige.'; however, this copy is simply numbered '3', and does not bear the publisher's statement on the limitation page. The remaining 44 copies were presumably disseminated by Crosby Gaige, with the exception of a few, which were passed on to the Chaucer Head Book Shop, New York, by Random House in 1938. Oscar Wilde and Lynd Ward
Condition: Like New. It is in good condition considering its age and the type of cover materials. It has the following condition issues: it has no dust. Jacket. There is some chipping of the wood veneer at the spine. The edges of the pages are yellowed with a more mild age yellowing of the pages themselves. The corners are not pristine; they are a little dented. Oscar Wilde's poetry enhanced with lithography (mezzotints) prints, artwork by Lynd Ward, famous for graphic novels like God's Man and Mad Man's Drum as well as illustrations for other books, including children's books. Very interesting binding materials. The cover is mounted wood veneer. It has an autograph, Lynd Ward's signature is tipped in. There is a square a paperstock that has had the book information typed on it using an old style typwriter. That square has an edge or boarder that is checkered with brown. His signature is on that square which has been affixed to the inside page of the book. I do not know when this was done. It appears to have been done a long time ago. It is how it was when I got the book and I have had it for over 30 years. It has a publication date of 1928, Macy-Masius: The Vanguard Press. The first edition of this edition of On Reading Gaol illustrated by Lynd Ward consisted of a run of 2000 copies, printed on Aurelian Rag Paper, with composition and presswork by The Matchbanks Press.
