1928. If you want to know what this is you can search the name at STANFORDdotEDU. Most of the back round information in this listing comes from there. This is one of a very few books about alcohol published in the United States during prohibition and was the FIRST book to utilize the favorite drinks of celebrities. This book includes celebrities such as Fannie Brice, W.C Fields, Florenz Ziegfeld, George Gershwin and many others more famous at the time. A Gordon Volland Concoction published by The Buzza Company. Each celebrity listed the ingredients to a drink and followed with the identification of their favorite former drinking spot. It is said that the significance of "Tex" Guinan being included was not solely being America's first movie cowgirl. She had a notorious reputation for her ownership of the 300 CLUB which was a speakeasy regularly raided by police in New York City and the place where all of the rich and famous came to meet. Supposedly, Ruby Keeler and George Raft were discovered as dancers at this club. CONDITION: Condition is near fine on this soft-covered paper back. There is age related toning/browning to the pages. The front cover has a crease in the lower right hand corner (PHOTO 1) with a hint of a crease upper right, and there is a minimal bit of paper loss on the rear cover at top and bottom (PHOTO 11), with rubbing along the rear edge of spine as shown in last photo (PHOTO 11). Tiny water spot on bottom inner edge of front cover. I found no flaws on the interior. The original silk tie string is in place. There is some edge soiling and soiling to bindin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Karl Bauer (Künstler) Deutschnationale Volkspartei, DNVP, Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck (Hrsg.)

Wood, Olive
N.d. [c. 1928]. Measuring c. 24cm x 19cm (image size) with very wide margins. A collection of seven large original watercolours, all illustrations for children's stories. They are most attractive, and fully finished designs, each signed by the artist, and one with an additional pen and ink drawing in the wide margins. The watercolours have been kept in original paper folders and the colours are fresh and bright. Some watercolour strokes, and pen and ink strokes in the margins, and pin holes in the blank corners. Several of the folders bear the pencil name Miss Cockroft, and there is an accompanying letter dated 1928, and addressed to her from the editor of the Halifax Courier with reference to her "delightful little stories." Oliove Wood's watercolours were painted to illustrate these children's tales. Olive Wood (fl. 1914-1933) was a miniature painter and illustrator of children's books. She trained at the Clapham and Camberwell Schools of Art and lived and worked in Dulwich Village, London. She exhibited illustrations and pen and ink page designs at the Royal Academy and at the Society of Women Artists. Her early designs incorporate art nouveau motifs. Later, she contributed illustrations to collections of children's stories and poetry, and to popular annuals such as Bo-Peep Annual and Little Folks. Miss Edith Cockroft was appointed as infant's teacher at Addingham School, Yorkshire in 1926 and remained in post there for 38 years. There are a number of examples of Olive Wood's work in the V & A, and she was clearly a gifted and imaginative artist.

D. H. Lawrence
1928. HANDWRITTEN BY D.H. LAWRENCE LAWRENCE, D.H. Original One Page Holograph Portion by D.H. Lawrence For His Introduction To His Book Translation of Giovanni Verga - Cavalleria Rusticana and Other Stories. quarto, [circa 1928]. The text which is used in his introduction is D.H. Lawrence's translation of Giovanni Verga's remarks about how he developed his own style of writing. "I had published several of my first novels. They went well. I was preparing others. One day, I don't know how, there came into my hand a sort of broadside, a half-penny sheet sufficiently ungrammatical and disconnected, in which a sea-captain succinctly relates all the vicissitudes thru which his sailing ship has passed. Seaman's language, short, without an unnecessary phrase. It struck me, and I read it again; it was what I was looking for, without definitely knowing it. Sometimes, you know, just a sign, an indication is enough. It was a revelation." Lawrence's Verga book was published in 1928 by Martin Secker in London and in America by The Dial Press. Fine condition. A Copy of the First American Edition accompanies the manuscript.

RADICAL & PROLETARIAN LITERATURE] TULLY, Jim
Alfred A. Knopf, London, 1928. "Despite its cheery-sounding title, Circus Parade is light years away from Toby Tylerland, presenting a dark, violent and thoroughly unromanticized portrait of life on the road with a traveling show -- described by Tully as "generally a canvas nest of petty thieves and criminals among the lower gentry." The book's depictions of casual brutality -- including a shocking account of the troupe's exploitation of a young black girl's sexual favors -- got it banned in Boston and caused an uproar with circus fans (and, unsurprisingly, circus owners), which helped to put the kibosh on a proposed film adaptation by James Cruze" (PROUTY 4). Uncommon, particularly in dustjacket - among the titles by American author's published during Knopf's short-lived London years. Octavo (19.5cm); purple cloth, with titling and decorative elements stamed in pale metallic green on spine and front cover; 248pp. Forward lean, small stain to lower left corner of front board, with a hint of sunning to spine; clean throughout; Very Good+ or better. Dustjacket is price-clipped, lightly edgeworn and a bit spine-sunned, with some rubbing to joints, and a few small nicks and short tears; Very Good+. WAUGH Evelyn
1928. Frontispiece, illustrations, First edition, 8vo., cloth. Duckworth, London. A fine association copy, from one great English comic writer to another, inscribed on the front free endpaper to Anthony Powell ?Tony from Evelyn, April 1928?, with Powell's armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. Powell and Waugh first met at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in Holborn, establishing a life-long friendship. It was Powell, who was working for Duckworth, who helped Waugh with the contract for the publication of this his first book, the presentation of this volume expressive of Waugh's gratitude. In his autobiography, 'A Little Learning', Waugh slightly dismissively described his early relationship with Powell, saying they 'stood on friendly terms though barely in friendship', Powell putting more feeling into his remark on hearing of Waugh's death 'His going means that a chunk of my own life has gone too'. Some small foxing to the front endpapers and the rear pastedown, spine faded, rear board sunned. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
