Tallinna Eesti Kirjastus-Ühisus, Tallinn (Estonian Joint Publishing, Tallinn) 1928 - Estonian language. Octavo 12 x 20 cm. Weight 25 gr. Occasional underlining of text with blue pencil, slightly frayed cover corners, foxing spots and couple of small light stains on the cover and on the title, some very small needle holes on the cover and first pages. The event provided an overview of Swedish art development since 1880 showing prominent art appearance, its traditions and taste. Exhibition participants in the catalogue are grouped according to their membership in the art organizations. In the event took part three leading Swedish artists groups. The first was formed of elder masters who gained so-called official recognition. Their works are mostly impressionist and old-realist genre: the most important landscape painter Prints Eugen, also great landscape masters Gottfried Kallstenius and Anselm Schultzberg, strong portrait painters Bergh Richard and Oskar Björk, bright colorist David Wallin, outstanding figure painter Carl Wilhelmson, fabulous birds painter Bruno Liljefors, spirited impressionist Karl Nordström whose works presentation was the biggest, lush realist Wilhelm Smith and many others. Voltaire, Jean Francois Marie Arouet de ; illustrated by Rockwell Kent
New York: Random House, 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. Rockwell Kent. Spectacular hand-colored edition of Candide (1 of 95), issued to celebrate the inauguration of Bennett Cerf's new company, Random House. The logo for Random House, used to this day, comes from the final illustration in the book, by Rockwell Kent, depicting an idealized country home filled with the ideas of the Enlightenment. The edition consisted of 1,470 black and white copies priced at fifteen dollars each and ninety-five hand-colored copies priced at seventy five dollars (over $1000 today). The book was printed by Elmer Adler's Pynston Printers in the New York Times Annex. The book was hand set in type designed by Adler's partner Lucian Bernhard (1883-1972). Rockwell Kent had 95 copies hand colored at his studio by his assistants Lone Robinson (who later worked with Diego Rivera) and Wanda Gag (who wrote and illustrated the much-loved book Millions of Cats -- Newbery winner and still in print). There are 120 quarto pages (approximately 8 x 11.5 inches) in the book and on each there is a hand-colored illustration. Everything comes together in this book, easily one of the great fine press books of the 20th century. This copy is in near fine condition, bright and fresh and completely clean. 1/4 morocco (touch of wear) over patterned cloth boards of Rockwell Kent's Random House, showing virtually no wear. The original slipcase is present and lined with soft felt (thus the condition of the book) and a silk string for pulling the book out, no bumps or seam wear -- near fine. RADCLYFFE HALL
HALL, Radclyffe, The Well Of Loneliness. Paris, Privately Printed1928. First " Continental "Edition .Pp [xii] 13-512 Fine copy in two "plain brown wrappers". With a commentary by Havelock Ellis. First published in England in 1928 but banned because of its lesbian themes. The publisher Jonathan Cape sent the remaining unbound sheets to Paris to get them bound and distributed in an attempt to avoid censorship. The plain brown wrappers are typical for privately printed erotica from the period. One wrapper has a stuck on label, the other is completely plain. James Douglas, the then editor of the Sunday Express, wrote, "I would rather give a healthy boy or a healthy girl a phial of prussic acid than this novel." The only sexual reference in the work "and that night, they were not divided", was enough to get the book judged obscene by the British courts on the ground that it defended "unnatural practices between women". For a long time The Well Of Loneliness was the only novel with a Lesbian theme that anyone had read, and from its publication provoked argument. Critics claim that it promoted a negative view of lesbianism in that the main protagonist in the work suffers self-hatred, and that lesbians are portrayed as mannish cross dressers. The novel ends with the heroine's plea to God: "Give us also the right to our existence!" This is the very scarce First edition of the book Privately Printed in Paris, with the original two brown paper wraps- an interesting work bibliographically.
