Leningrad: Gosud. russkii muzei, 1928. 72 pp.: ill. 18x14 cm. In original Constructivist wrappers designed by M.S. Brodsky. Very good. Bleak damp stains on the side margin throughout the book (not affecting text). First and only edition. One of 3000 copies. Very rare. This edition is dedicated to workers' art which was its rise in the 1920s. Introduction by Nikolay Punin emphasizes the significance of workers' amateur art for the Soviet art life in general and for bringing up of Soviet man as well. His intro is followed by a flattering article by Vsevolod Voinov. A very interesting outline of history is given next as well as results of the work by M. Brodsky which completes the picture. The catalogue of the exhibition held in 1925 in Russian Museum in Leningrad and later in Moscow is next (no details, general information about halls) and a very curious list of Art Clubs which took part in both shows (67 clubs provided more than 1000 works). Text is accompanied by works shown at exhibitions. Cover was designed by Moisei Brodsky (1896-1944), Soviet artist, who was actively involved in creating and developing the basics for preparing amateur artists. This was a kind of experiment started in 1923 by Gubpolitprosvet when they combined all sections of clubs into one, United Art Club, with amateur art as a the foundation. It was almost a disaster for the art sections at first, it meant losing academic traditions. The setting "art is apolitical, art is an end in itself" was destroyeda as club work was first of all propaganda, agitation, education. Many directors were not ready for … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kharbu, Tea fon (Thea von Harbou)
Iv. Koiumdzhiev, Sofia, 1928. Octavo (21 × 15 cm). Original pictorial wrappers; 143 pp. Good or better. [Metropolis in Bulgarian] First Bulgarian appearance of von Harbou's novel, based on the screen play written jointly by her and Fritz Lang, which served to popularize the monumental 1927 silent film. Translated, and apparently shortened, by Zlatka Koiumdzhieva, and likely published without authorization (possibly to coincide with an early screening of the film in Bulgaria). The front wrapper incorporates the iconic futuristic motif of Werner Graul's movie poster, which was also used on related promotional material. A good copy of an extremely uncommon book. FALLA, Manuel de
FALLA, MANUEL DE. (1876-1946). Spanish composer of Nights in the Gardens of Spain and other 20th-century masterpieces. TLS. ("Manuel de Falla"). 1p. 4to. Alhambros-Granada, April 18, 1928. To French composer and critic MAURICE GALERNE (?-?). In French with translation. "I felt very honored to receive your letter last month and ask you from the bottom of my heart to pardon the lamentable lateness of my response. I had originally planned to write to you as soon as I returned to Paris (I had to spend a few days in Tours), but unfortunately I ran out of time and couldn't suggest a time to meet. Regarding the scores, what Mr. Eschig told you is exactly true. But I will do what I can to get them to you. By the way, some of my friends are in the same position as you. I don't need to tell you how touched I am by your plan to dedicate a study to the works presented at the Opera Comique, especially after reading your article about 'Le Roi Dagobert.' I look forward to the pleasure of meeting you the next time I come to Paris and send you my most respectful regards." In 1907, Falla moved to Paris, where he lived for seven years and established numerous influential artistic relationships. Czech-French music publisher Max Eschig (1872-1927) represented foreign music publishers in France before establishing his own company, Max Eshig & Cie, whose first works published were those of Falla, followed by Honegger, Milhaud, Poulenc, Satie, Albeniz, and Villa-Lobos. "Le Bon Roi Dagobert" is an old French satirical song about tales of debauchery surrounding Merovingian Kind Dagobert I (c. 603-63 … [Click Below for Full Description]

This copy Class 1b, with a rough-trimmed fore-edge and untrimmed lower edge. Fabes notes that a "copy which conforms to either of these forms [i.e., Class 1a or 1b] is a first issue of the book, irrespective of the presence or absence of misprints" (p 54); the dropped "o" on p 365, present in our copy, is simply "due to imperfections in the type metal" (53). Keynes also notes that "typographical irregularities have no significance whatsoever" in determining first and second issue. A classic of English literature, somewhat scarce in the trade in a complete dust jacket. Mild shelfwear to extremities; hint of fading to spine; small crease to upper corner of ffep; light foxing and toning to eps; evidence of sticker removal to rear paste-down, with slight loss to top layer of paper; last two leaves partially unopened. ASHENDENE PRESS
Chelsea: The Ashendene Press, 1928. 2 volumes, folio. (17 x 12 inches). Text printed in double columns with chapter headings and shoulder notes in red, woodcut foliated initials and borders by W.M. Quick and George H. Ford after Louise Powell. Uncut. Full green crushed morocco, bound by W.H. Smith and Son, spines with raised bands in six compartments, first and second gilt lettered. Cloth and marbled board slipcases. One of 225 copies on Batchelor paper, out of a total edition of 245 copies. Translated by Thomas Shelton. One of the masterpieces of the Ashendene Press. The largest-sized book of the Ashendene Press, Don Quixote represented a new direction for the Ashendene Press in its typeface and decoration. The new typeface by Emery Walker was based on the font used in the Ulm 1482 edition of Ptolemy and was "a much lighter, more elegant letter than the earlier fount," the denser Subiaco type. "And with the use of this less dictatorial type face, the printer could cast away a little of his restraint in planning whatever lay outside it. So in Don Quixote we find at last an alphabet of open and freely drawn, decorative initial letters, designed by Louise Powell and shadowing something of Kelmscott Press taste from years before." Franklin, pp. 56-57 Ashendene Bibliography XXXVI; Franklin pp. 56-57; Ransom 39.

Complete 8 volumes set 1928. This set is priced to reflect the condition issues. Overall it's a nice collection with no missing pages, writing, etc. The last book volume 8 has damage to the cloth of the spine with most of it missing and is splitting along the gutter. All the other books are very good. Volume 1 has a small piece of cloth missing from the back bottom corner as shown in the picture. This is a highly sought after set of Napoleon Hill books.

Berlin/ Hannover: Verlag "Ross"/ Cigarettenfabrik Constantin, 1928. First edition. Cards/Softcover. vg- to near fine. 1. This is a complete collection of postcards printed by Verlag Ross, for Ufa-Delca Film, to celebrate the release of Fritz Lang's two-part epic fantasy film Die Nibelungen. The postcards measure approximately 3.5 x5.5" each, and are printed in striking sepia-toned photogravure, on heavy cardstock. The images depict characters and dramatic scenes from the film, covering both parts "Siegfried" and "Kriemhilds Rache" ("Kriemhild's Revenge"), and are divided into 6 groupings. Each card is captioned with the serial number, and title of the character or scene, with the name of the actor often mentioned as well. The final group of 4 cards is a sequence showcasing the pivotal dramatic battle between Siegfried and the dragon. This set is not to be confused with the series of colored postcards by Uvachrom, which were based, in part, on these images. The postcards were never used (circulated), but some have a red triangle stamped insignia, light smudges and/or light pencil markings. Some of the cards use a faint light blue cardstock, while most are white. The front of some of the cards have some occasion light smudges, minor stains, and/or light creases, with most images unaffected. The cards are in overall very good- condition.2.
