Siegfried SASSOON]
Faber & Gwyer, [1928]. 8vo., First Edition, on laid paper, some light offsetting to blank preliminaries only; original blue cloth, gilt back, yellow top, uncut, backstrip very lightly faded (but all gilt entirely legible) else a remarkably bright, clean copy in dustwrapper, the latter very lightly browned at backstrip. Sassoon's first published work in prose and a classic of the genre. The author's name was not printed until the second issue of the second impression. This is the so-called 'second issue' with 'A' on blank leaf preceding half-title, though Keynes states that these 'typographical irregularities have no significance whatever, since they were both printed and published at the same time'. SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Keynes A30a. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Edmund Dulac (illus.)
Cassell & Company. Published by Cassell & Co.: London, Toronto, Melbourne and Sydney; 1928. **Limited edition Signed by Edmund Dulac** numbered 778 of 1000. A collection of early French fairy tales. Provenance: There is a neat gift inscription reading: ‘To Barbara E. Carr on her sixth(?) birthday from Mother. Nov 30, 1928.’ This beautiful book has been rebound in half calf and green cloth boards, with gold gilt detailing and lettering to the spine. There is just some mild rubbing to the boards and spine and some minor cracking to the spine ends and wear to the very edges of the boards. Apart from this the binding is sound and in smart, clean condition. The pages are uncut and the top edge is gold gilt. Inside, some slight cracking is visible between the spine and front free endpaper. There is some toning and age spotting throughtout the book, although it is mainly at the edges and otherwise the pages are clean bright and in beautiful condition. All 12 illustrations are accounted for and in lovely, vivid condition, protected by tissue guards and depicting the oriental mood of the tales. There is a free endpaper at the rear of the book that shows signs of having been repaired and reattached to the book, but this is the only major issue in a lovely book. Overall, this beautiful book is in Very Good+ condition and is very collectible, with classic fairy tales and vivid illustrations to bring them to life, this would be an excellent book to add to a collection of rare children’s and illustrated books. KIPLING Rudyard
First edition. 8vo., original red cloth with the Ganesha device on the front cover, dustjacket, a very fine copy. London: Macmillan and Co., Limited. Inscribed on the title page ?Viscountess Milner from the author. May 1928.? and signed in place of his printed name. An ALS on his Bateman's letterhead dated May 7 apologises for the delay in sending and explains why he is sending it at all by referring her to speech XIII ?The War and The Schools?, a speech he gave at Winchester College in December 1915, addressing the death of her son, the former Winchester schoolboy George Cecil, who died on the Western Front, a few days before Kipling's son John. Kipling's rather bellicose speech suggests that George is ?among the first of that vast company of young dead who live without change in the hearts of those who love them . He died - as many of you too will die - but he died knowing the issue for which he died. It is well to die for one's country. But that is not enough. It is also necessary that, so long as he lives, a man should give to his country, as George Cecil gave, a mind and soul neither ignorant nor inadequate.? GRECHANINOV, Aleksandr Tikhonovich 1864-1956
10 pp. In E, 2/2 time, marked "Lento" at head. Folio (358 x 265 mm.). Unbound. Notated in ink on 18-stave Russian music manuscript paper. With numerous autograph corrections and amendations including pencil markings of an editorial nature. The printer's copy, presumably used in preparation of the published edition. With pencilled annotation to upper left corner of title indicating receipt of the manuscript (presumably by the publisher) on October 13, 1928. Slightly worn and soiled. Not recorded in Slonimsky. "In two fields of Russian music Grechaninov has a special place: children's music and liturgical works. Even his first liturgy op.13 is worth attention; and in the op.19 choruses he used a new style, favoured by Katal′sky and others, recognizable by its modal harmonization of old Russian melodies. This initially aroused strong opposition from conservative church musicians. In the popular second liturgy Grechaninov solved the problem of the Credo by giving the text to a solo alto, who declaims it rhythmically while the choir sings the word 'Veruyu' ('I believe') in simple harmony. Grechaninov's later use of instruments in para-liturgical works, his composition of a Roman Catholic Mass and motets (with organ), and his writing of a Missa oecumenica - a Latin mass for solo voices, chorus, organ and orchestra on Orthodox, Gregorian and Hebrew liturgical melodies - all testify to his liberal religious outlook." TOOKER, Virginia
Oakland and San Francisco,: Thomas Brothers,, [c1928].. its streets go winding up and down, an oak covered campus it wears for a crown with people & places of renown. Cromolithograph plan of Berkeley, a few tears skilfully repaired. Rare pictorial map of the University of Berkeley, California. This humorous plan shows the architectural transformation of Berkley under John Glen Howard (1864-1931) from the turn of the century to the mid 1920s. In the late 1890s an international competition was set up to find a suitable architect in order to transform the undistinguished campus into a “City of Learning”. Howard did not win the competition; in fact he finished fourth. The winner was Émile Bénard of Paris. However when Bénard travelled to Berkeley, he managed to insult virtually everyone he met, and persuaded the Californians that he was not to be entrusted with the execution of any of his work. Howard due to his local proximity (he was based in Los Angeles) was appointed to the advisory council to oversee the implementation of Bénard's designs; and in 1901 was appointed as the supervising architect of the University. Howard developed a style of architecture that was inspired by stately classical lines. Among the campus landmarks built during his tenure were the Hearst Memorial Mining Building (1902-7), the Hearst Greek Theatre (1903), California Hall (1905), Doe Library (1911-17), the Campanile (1914), Wheeler Hall (1917), Gilman Hall (1917), and Hilgard Hall (1918). Other notable buildings on the plan include the California Memorial Stadium (1923); and the Stephens Hall (1 … [Click Below for Full Description]
