About the Author: James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (1882 - 1941) was an Irish expatriate author of the 20th century. He is known for his landmark novel Ulysses (1922) and its controversial successor Finnegans Wake (1939), as well as the short story collection Dubliners (1914) and the semi-autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). Although he spent most of his adult life outside Ireland, Joyce's psychological and fictional universe is firmly rooted in his native Dublin, the city which provides the settings and much of the subject matter for all his fiction. In particular, his tempestuous early relationship with the Irish Roman Catholic Church is reflected through a similar inner conflict in his recurrent alter ego Stephen Dedalus. As the result of his minute attentiveness to a personal locale and his self-imposed exile and influence throughout Europe, notably in Paris, Joyce paradoxically became one of the most cosmopolitan yet one of the most regionally … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAINVILLE Jacques (BOILEAU DESPREAUX Nicolas)
- s.d. [Click Below for Full Description]

H. L. Rabino
E.J.W.GIBB MEMORIAL NEW SERIES 1928. Gibb Memorial Trust. Hardcover. Condition: Used As New. 235 pages in Persian and 170 pages in English. Mzandarn and Astarbd first published as volume VII of the new series of the E. J. W. Gibb Memorial Series (1928). Much of the data was retrieved in the course of two expeditions by the author, one in spring of 1908 and the other between November 1909 and January 1910, the latter providing the chronological framework for Rabinos observations along his itinerary. It is a remarkable work, the product of many years of the careful accumulation of information about a region cut off from the Iranian Plateau by the formidable barrier of the Alburz Mountains and enjoying a complex history commensurate with its peculiar physical geography and inaccessible valleys. The book is a mixture of gazetteer and travelogue, informed by detailed research not only in the historical sources available, but also in the works of previous European and local writers. Notable among its valuable qualities is the substantial selection of Persian inscriptions provided in addition to Rabinos descriptive text. Here we have a scholarly and sensitive account of two Iranian provinces full of character and variety. This is a very rare classic work and an essential resource for subsequent work on the Caspian provinces, which all draw on the efforts of H. L. Rabino. Included with this edition is a large-scale original accompanying map. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Florence Perkins
Santa Barbara, California: The Schauer Printing Studio, Inc, 1928. Condition: Very good - Signed. Quarto size, 47 pp., inscribed by Jean du Bouillier. "Beyond the Moon" is a collection of poems by Florence Perkins, dedicated to the Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlink (1862-1949), whom Perkins met in 1919 as he was lecturing in America; the two subsequently began a long correspondence (n. b., info from the Royal Library of Belgium's website). Ethereal and dream-like, Perkins's poems contain a cosmology and mystery breathing between the lines, and they encompass a pathos as expansive as the universe that is referenced in the text. The poems are accompanied by black-and-white illustrations by Jean du Bouillier, who conveys the magic and mysticism of the poems with an Art Deco style of illustration. The illustrations are tipped in throughout the book and provide a meditative pause between poems. DESCRIPTION: Quarter black cloth with rainbow-coloured paper boards, black-and-white illustration (also found inside the book) by Jean du Bouillier on the front board, gilt lettering on the spine, top and bottom edges rough cut, rainbow-coloured front endpapers and metallic green, red, and blue patterned rear endpapers, many signatures unopened, seven black-and-white illustrations by du Bouillier, tipped in against brown paper, throughout; quarto size (10.5" by 8.25"), pagination: [i-vi] 1-41, inscribed by Jean du Bouillier on the first flyleaf. The first, signed by Byrd and dated May 24, 1928, thanks Bell for a contribution of $200, disconsolately adding, "As you perhaps realize, this expedition is very costly and we have been having a difficult time raising the necessary funds. I want you to know how much we appreciate your donating towards the expedition, and whatever success we have in the Antarctic you may feel that you have had a part in it." The second letter, signed by Captain H. H. Railey, Byrd's personal representative, is dated December 18, 1928, and passes along an Antarctic new year's greeting: "In a radiogram from the Ross Sea, received today, Commander Byrd has asked me to convey to you his heartiest wishes for a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. [Click Below for Full Description]

A tear to last 7 leaves. Internally fine and clean. Pp. 1387-1409. [Entire issue: Pp. (8), 1341-1575, (2), XIV, (1).]. First printing of Szent-Györgyi's landmark paper in which he for the first time discovered and isolated "hexuronic acid" or "ascorbic acid", today commonly known as vitamin C. In 1937 he was awarded the Nobel in Medicine "for his discoveries in connection with the biological combustion processes, with special reference to vitamin C and the catalysis of fumaric acid"."Szent-Györgyi is most notably associated with the discovery of vitamin C. The discovery of vitamins themselves was recognized in 1929 in a Nobel Prize to Christiaan Eijkman and Gowland Hopkins. The search for vitamin C was then well underway in several labs. Ironically, the compound had already been isolated by Szent-Györgyi. Though no one-not even Szent-Györgyi-yet knew its identity." (DSB). "In 1928 Szent-Györgyi had proposed that hexuronic acid, a highly reducing substance that he had isolated from oranges, cabbages and adrenal glands, was responsible for the anti-scurvy properties of fruit and vegetables, that is, that hexuronic acid was vitamin C. Zilva disagreed, citing work that he had done showing that vitamin activity and reducing power were independent of one another. There the matter lay for four years until, in 1932, Szent-Györgyi, carried out experiments to see whether hexuronic acid wo … [Click Below for Full Description]
