Shelley, Percy Bysshe
Montagnola: Officina Bodoni, 1928. leather_bound. 38 pages. 29 x 20 cm. Limited edition, one of 220 copies printed on vellum paper with the original types of Giambattista Bodoni. Verses Addressed To The Noble and Unfortunate Lady Emilio V____, This work was inspired by Shelley's meeting, at the end of October 1820 when the author had moved back to Pisa, the beautiful, young Teresa Viviani (1801--1836), who was being kept in a convent awaiting the outcome of marriage arrangements in which she played little part. But it also reflects the difficulties he was facing in his second marriage to Mary Godwin, and looks back to the desolation the poet faced after the suicide of his first wife Harriet Westbrook. Covers slightly splayed, bookplate, covers and interior fresh and clean. Orig. full vellum, spine lettered in gilt. Very good. Item #21216.

ELLIOTT, FRANK A]
[ca 1928]. [ca 1928. 11 1/4" x 8 3/4" in flexible embossed split-pin soft covers and with two brass split-pin binders at gutter margin. [76] leaves of typescript on typing paper. Signed in two different spots by Frank A. Elliott. Sixty-six silver gelatin photographs, sized from 2 1/2" x 4 1/4" to 4 1/4" x 7 3/4." All photographs are neatly mounted at corners with slits, and then corners carefully pasted in on versos with thin strips, and with nearly all photos with typed captions below, some with pencil and/or ink annotations, and corrections. This original typescript prospectus offers an excellent overview of Panama’s economic development at the end of the 1920s, as well as the impact of American control of the Canal Zone. Elliott (1865-1940) was a California mining engineer whose family owned tropical plant farms in the Sacramento Delta, and was aiding California-based companies expand into potentially lucrative Latin American markets. He details the business opportunities for his unnamed client potentially purchasing six centrifugal sugar mills, three alcohol distilleries, and all of the lands included with each, owned by six different owners in the provinces of Cocle, Los Santos, and Herrero. He notes in the extended appendices that the changes in Panamanian Law (1927) encouraging offshore investments, tax haven benefits for ship owners (largely rewritten to benefit the Standard Oil of California oil tanker fleet), and closing of the sugar market to outside imports created an opportunity to increase production of Panama’s native sugar crop, and possibly export as un … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lemon, Frank
Published Privately by Wright Aeronautical Corporation, 1928. A limited edition of 500 copies, although not stated or numbered as such. A large folio album containing 7 (photomechanical prints). Originally housed in blue wraps. These blue wrappers and the 7 lovely full colored plates are now housed in a large custom made folding cloth slipcase, itself in fine condition. The plates themselves and the blue original wrappers are all chipped and very brittle, the paper being exceedingly dry. The outer edges are chipped and torn, the drawings themselves are generally not and could be matted hiding most of the problems. One of the prints is signed by Lemon. A rare and desirable item anyway, located only one copy in the Australian Library archives. The bookplate of the John Crerar rare book library from the University of Chicago is affixed to the supplied box and each plate has the stamp to the rear.

c1928. An interesting and thoughtful work, most likely a ship enthusiast and not a school project.. A hand crafted paper book with 24 leaves. It includes 10 watercolors of ships throughout the ages from the first log canoe to a 1920s passenger liner. Each full page watercolor is accompanied by an informational narrative. The center of the book includes a center-fold of a printed illustration by Charles S. J> Delacy - Section of the 'Revenge'.The illustrations are well executed although done by an amateur hand. The book opens with a copied verse CARGOES by John Masefield, that begins Quinquireme of Ninevah from distant Ophir Rowing home to haven in sunny Palestine, With a cargo of ivory And apes and peacocks... It concludes:Dirty British coaster with a salt-caked smoke stack, Butting through the Channel in the mad March days With a cargo of Tyne coal, Road rails, pig lead, Tirewood, ironware, and cheap tin trays. Decorative grosgrain ribbon closures. The final watercolor in the book puts an image of the Santa Maria next to a 1928 to exemplify the changes in modern history. Measures 10 1/2" x 9".

Roosevelt, Franklin D.
Warm Springs, Ga, 1928. [8]pp. in Roosevelt's hand, 10pp. typed (including [7]pp. on Warm Springs letterhead). Letters have been hole-punched and bear marks from previous stapling. Half-inch tear to one of the typed pages and some chipping to 3 pages of memos. In a half red morocco slipcase. A small but exceptional collection of memos and drafts, providing rare insight into how FDR ran the Georgia Warm Springs, a Georgia resort that he took over and developed into a retreat for polio sufferers after founding the Warm Springs Foundation in 1927. The collection comprises five parts: 1) Autograph manuscript (not signed) in FDR's hand, on Warm Springs letterhead. [5]pp. "To all patients....The Foundation is conducting the treatment, and the patients come here for a definite purpose. The greater part of each day is taken up with the treatment, and while there is no wish to curtail personal liberty or recreation, it is essential to prevent fatigue and to work for the highest degree of health for all concerned. That is why simple rules are necessary. Many patients or their families will perhaps consider that circumstances warrant special exceptions to the rules - but this would soon lead to confusion and discrimination. That is why all patients whether of full age or minors, whether living in the colony, hotel or in private cottages are asked to live up not only to the letter, but to the spirit of the rules. We are concerned with the greatest good to the greatest number." 2) Autograph manuscript (not signed) in FDR's hand. [3]pp. "Memo." 3) Typed manuscript, dated Jan. 1, … [Click Below for Full Description]
