Burroughs, Edgar Rice
Chicago: A. C. McClurg, 1928. Near fine to fine book in very good dust jacket. The Master Mind of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs Chicago: A. C. McClurg, 1928 First printing. First edition. Dust jacket. Hardback in orange cloth. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1] 2-312, five inserted plates with illustrations by J. Allen St. John. Stamped in black. The sixth book of the Mars series. The book is a very good plus copy - maybe even near fine or a bit better. The book is with some toning on the endpapers and evidence of some kind of label removal on the rear free endpaper. Some light minor foxing on the first few pages. The interior is very good. The five St. John plates are present. On pages 8 and 9 there are two small dark spots at the upper inner juncture near the spine; on pages 290 and 191 are two very light small spots near the edge of the pages. None of these affect the text, and each is minor - but I thought it best to mention this. Hinges unbroken. The book is way above usually encountered because of the orange cloth proclivity to stains and dirt. The book is shrouded in a good first edition dust jacket with a piece lacking at the bottom of the spine. Soiling to the jacket tear panel and spine as shown and wear to corners and edges. On the verso of the jacket there are a few minor delicate places where very thin pieces of rice paper are, especially along the front flap edge. Please see the photos using the enlargement feature. The jacket is intact. It's very rare to encounter this book in a McClurg dust jacket. Fact is, it's rare to encounter this book in any kind of dust jacket as on … [Click Below for Full Description]

Teige, Karel, editor
1928. Prague: Odeon, 1927-1928. Octavo (ca. 23 × 18 cm). Contemporary half cloth over marbled boards; decorative leather spine labels; preserving all front and rear wrappers; approx. 32-40 pp. per issue. Numerous photographs and illustrations. Wrappers resized with very slight loss to right and lower margin; else very good. "The most important Czech avant-garde periodical and principal platform of the Dev tsil group in the late twenties - early thirties, with texts and illustrations by by almost all major architects, artists and authors of the period. Teige's master piece of design and one of the most attractive avant-garde magazines of the interbellum" (Vloemans, Avantgarda, 102). Thirty issues were published from 1927-1930, including special issues on Bauhaus, Soviet art, Apollinaire and Italian Futurism/Marinetti. The journal was the most important, and visually striking, publication of the avant-garde group Dev tsil, based around such figures as Karel Teige, Jaroslav Seifert and Adolf Hoffmeister, and the primary source of information on constructivism, poetism, and developments in West European arts. This run, which gathers all ten issues of the first year, contains a special issue on modern architecture (no. 5), with contributions on/by Bauhaus, Le Corbusier, Rietveld, Jaromír Krejcar, Teige, and Hoffmeister, and a special issue on avant-garde theatre (no. 7). The latter features contributions by Honzl, Nezval, Van ura, Voskovec and Werich, Obrtel, Mayerová, and Hoffmeister, especially on the "Prague Free Theatre" (Osvobozené divadlo), inf … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gur'ian, Olga and A[nna] Kazimirovna Borovskaia, illustrator
1928. Moscow: Gosudarstvennoe izdatel'stvo, [1928]. Quarto (28.5 × 22 cm). Original staple-stitched pictorial wrappers; 16 pp. With seventeen large chromolithograph illustrations throughout. Small oval stamp of Marcel Bekus ("Ex-libris Marcel Bekus"). Light rust to staples, else very good or better. Second edition (first published in 1927). Striking illustrations and simple verse convey the experience of small children during a citywide celebration of an unnamed holiday in Moscow, most likely the yearly May First Parade. State-organized mass celebrations were progressively more common throughout the 1920s and 1930s as the Soviet state created new rituals to replace the old religious and state holidays. A parade with banners, posters, and music is emphasized here over the specific holiday. The illustrator, Anna Kazimirovna Borovskaia (1901-1984) was a poster artist and illustrator of children's books, games and postcards. She studied at VKhUTEMAS (1924-1929) and her illustrations and posters are stylistically close to the works of OST artists (Obshchestvo stankistov, or Society of Easel Painters). Borovskaia used a subdued palette, stylized and simplified drawing, resorted to generalizing the form combining modernist and realist tendencies. The illustrations for this book combine darker hues with bright layers of red and blue. Olga Gur'ian (1899-1974) was a prolific children's author who published over fifty books in her long writing career. Not in the Lur'e collection (Kniga dlia detei 1881-1939, Moscow: ULEI, 2009). Panama Many of the photographs contained in this album are from the Hoover eight week "Goodwill Tour" of Latin America. Standford's Geog.l Establishment, London, 21st April 1928. London,: Standford's Geog.l Establishment, London,, 21st April 1928.. 880 by 1660mm. (34.75 by 65.25 inches).. Published under authority of the Municipal Council 1928. A large coloured lithographed map showing the plan of Shanghai, made in 1928. Signed by Commissioner of public works, 44 (4 by 11) sheets mounted on linen. The map depicts Shanghai city in 1928, with the French Settlements and Shanghai International Settlements hand-coloured in outline in brown and pink. Two lines noted below the title: 1. The Pootung shore is taken from surveys by the Whangpoo Conservancy Board. 2. The French settlement is taken from surveys by the French Municipal Council. The famous Whangpoo (Huangpu) river in Shanghai is prominently shown from the midpoint of the bottom edge sinuating upwards to the top right corner, which divides the settlements to the left and Pootung (Pudong) to the right. Between the bank of the river and the French settlement, are the 'Chinese city' and a district labeled 'Nan Tao' (Nan Dao). The "Chinese city", is now called the "Old City", the traditional urban core of Shanghai. Its boundary was formerly defined by a defensive wall. The Old City was the county seat for the old county of Shanghai, with the advent of foreign concessions in Shanghai, it became just one part of Shanghai's urban core but continued for decades to be the seat of the Chinese authority in Shanghai. It was essentially coterminous with the old Nanshi District - Nan Dao, which is now part of Huangpu District. In 1927, in a bid to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hawaii: 1928. Very Good. Hardcover. Oblong octavo. Decorative paper boards measuring 10" x 7". Contains 97 sepia toned photographs measuring between 2" x 2.75" and 6" x 10" and affixed to stiff gray paper with captions. Additionally laid in are newspaper clippings and a Hawaii photogram booklet. Very good album with creasing and tears with mostly near fine photographs with some edgewear. A photo album kept while on a cruise to Hawaii in February of 1928 on the S.S. President Garfield. The album begins on board with the travelers sunbathing and having a good time on the sea along with shots of the boat itself. They arrived in Honolulu in March of that year, a picture of their arrival shows them throwing streamers from the deck. The travelers took trips to the Dole pineapple farm, went on a boat trip past the Leper Colony Kalaupapa, although they didn't disembark, and watched the sunset over Maui. A section of photos depicts a visit to the Hilo Boys Industrial School in Waialee, a reform school for boys consisting of roughly 100 Hawaiian boys convicted of assaulting their guardians. The photos mostly show the school grounds and complex with one photo showing the boys on the Hilo pier. There are also photographs of a flag raising at the Royal School, a boarding school for the royal children of Hawaii. There are photographs of a visit to M nana Island, referred to as Rabbit Island because at a distance it looks like a rabbit's head, and other images of beach frolicking near Kailua Bay. A small selection of larger prints shows the rock faces and cliffs of the Hawaiian coast. The … [Click Below for Full Description]

State College, Pennsylvania: 1928. Very Good. Hardcover. Oblong folio. Measuring 11" x 14". String-tied brown suede over paper boards with a Penn State emblem on the front board. Contains ephemera and 200 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.75" x 2" and 7" x 9.5", some with captions. Very good album with worn edges and some small tears with near fine photographs. A scrapbook kept by Ray O. Freudenberger while he was beginning his college education at Penn State University in 1928. During his time at the university he was a part of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity as well as involved in numerous sports teams and clubs. The album begins with a large photograph of the original fraternity house (which was destroyed by fire in 1966, and rebuilt in 1968). This is followed by another large photo showing a group of fraternity men and their dates posed on the steps of the house. The following pages are full of autographs and messages from his fraternity brothers and other classmates which say things like, "My old pal! Let's roll a few games," and "O really do remember from one house party to another." The photographs show school events; track meets and football games, as well as dances and classroom photos. One section shows an R.O.T.C. group at attention in full uniform with blimps flying overhead. Freudenberger photographed the campus in various seasons including a large section of the campus in the winter of 1928. There are also photos of a University building during construction. Ulysses by James Joyce Paris: Shakespeare & Company 1928 10th Printing Originally published in 1922 by Shakespeare & Co, this is the 10th printing by the original Publisher. This is one of the most renown books of the 20th century, and is not an easy book to find, even in this print. This copy has been bound in a 3/4 blue leather binding with marbled boards. Aside for the small chip in the hinge as seen, the cover has very little wear. The interior is quite clean with the exception of the previous owner's name on the title page, a blemish on 209, and a small tear on 645. The original cover was not bound within this volume, and I cannot find a binders name in the book, so I am not sure if this was originally bound this way or if it was bound as a special request. The original owner purchased this book in Paris in 1929. Overall a very fine example of a scarce book! This is the limited edition #640 of 800 copies signed by James Joyce. ---------- About the Author --------- James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (1882 - 1941) was an Irish expatriate author of the 20th century. He is known for his landmark novel Ulysses (1922) and its controversial successor Finnegans Wake (1939), as well as the short story collection Dubliners (1914) and the semi-autobiographical novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916). Although he spent most of his adult life outside Ireland, Joyce's psychological and fictional universe is firmly rooted in his native Dublin, the city which provides the settings and much of the subject matter for all his fiction. In particular, his tempestuous early relationship with the Irish Roman Catholic Church is reflected through a similar inner conflict in his recurrent alter ego Stephen Dedalus. As the result of his minute attentiveness to a personal locale and his self-imposed exile and influence throughout Europe, notably in Paris, Joyce paradoxically became one of the most … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Orpen
Williams & Norgate, 1928. An Onlooker in France, William Orpen, pub. Williams and Norgate, Revised and Enlarged edition 1924. Quarto, 127 pp illustrated with sepia-toned reproductions of Orpen's paintings. Brown cloth, corners with touches of wear/furring, cloth top and bottom of spine a little 'softened', mild grubbiness. Very slight 'looseness' at front hinge, but binding remains secure. Internally good with occasional spot of foxing/fingermark. Orpen's lively and evocative memoir of his time in France during WW1 as a war artist. To the front free end paper Orpen has sketched an amusing scene in a bar of two men in pen and ink adding the words 'For Charlie in memory of Dieppe summer 1928' and under the sketch Orpen has written 'from William Orpen'. The page with a very mild, soft diagonal crease & a couple of small, pale stains. I wonder if the 'Charlie' referred to might not be Charles Grover-Williams, a racing driver who had been Orpen's chauffeur while Orpen was in France during the Versailles Conference in 1919. Grover-Williams eventually married Yvonne Aubicq, who had once been Orpen's mistress. In July, 1928 Grover-Williams, a skilled racing driver won the French Grand prix so it is perfectly possible that he and Orpen might have met up that summer. GW died in WW2 after being arrested by the Nazis [he worked for the secretive SOE, and with Yvonne was running a Resistance cell]. Original sketches by Orpen are rare on the market. Hecht, Ben and Charles MacArthur
Covici-Friede, 1928. First Edition. INSCRIBED by Hecht to members of his family on the front endpaper: "To Peter, Esther, Patty Hecht / From Ben Hecht / Love." Ben Hecht's rarest and most important play, basis for three key films: in 1931 with Adolphe Menjou and Pat O'Brien, in 1974 with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, and most importantly, the classic screwball comedy "His Girl Friday," with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in 1940. Hecht is arguably the greatest screenwriter of Hollywood's golden era, Housed in a custom quarter-leather clamshell box. Very Good plus or better in a Near Fine, professionally restored example of the rare dust jacket. Spine slightly toned, faint foxing and a tiny stain at the page fore-edges, and light rubbing and bumping at the extremities. Jacket presents beautifully, with only a few cello-tape repairs at the verso to note. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Tbilisi: Sp'etsdanishnulebis izoliat'oris (met'ekhis) k'ult'-k'omisiis ga-ma, 1928. 24 pp.: ill. 26x17 cm. In original wrappers with letterpress design. Tears of the spine with small losses, soiling of the covers, water stain on the lower margin throughout the copy, otherwise very good internally. This is a unique survival of the time - the Georgian magazine published in Metekhi prison. The only issue was printed. One of 1000 copies produced. According to the National Library of Georgia, the edition was banned. Cover design and illustrations were produced by convicted artist E. Kurmakher, photographs made by G. Tokhadze who was a photographer of Georgian Goskinoprom. Metekhi has been originally built in V century AD. Throughout the centuries it has been one of the most important churches in Tbilisi. Being the prison from the early 19th century, Metekhi castle was the main 'politizoliator' in the Soviet Georgia where the political prisoners were contained, in particular, Mensheviks who led Georgia in the first years after October Revolution. It had the status of jail until the State Museum of the Arts of the Georgian SSR was established in the castle in 1934. The edition compiled the texts on day-to-day cultural life and work of prisoners as well as their prose and poetry. The materials were made public as evidence of the successfully improved conditions. The issue had different prices on the back cover stressing that it was printed for the people inside and beyond the jail. For the loyal readership, the magazine appeared with editor's note "Citizens! Taschen, 1928. Like New. All volumes except one are in their original shrink wrap. a brilliant price for a brilliant set. i will ship, but it probably will make more sense for you to do a pick up... For over seventy-five years, domus has been hailed as the world's most influential architecture and design journal. Founded in 1928 by the great Milanese architect Gio Ponti, the magazine's central agenda has always remained that of creating a privileged insight toward identifying the style of a particular age, from Art Deco, Modern Movement, Functionalism and Postwar to Pop, Post-Modernism and Late Modern. Beautifully designed and comprehensively documented, page after page domus presents some of the most exciting design and architecture projects from around the world. TASCHEN's twelve-volume reprint features selected highlights from the years 1928 to 1999. Reproducing the pages as they originally appeared, each volume is packed with articles that bring to light the incredible history of modern design and architecture. A truly comprehensive lexicon of styles and movements, the volumes are accompanied by specially commissioned introductory texts that not only outline the history of the magazine but also describe what was happening in design and architecture during each era covered. These texts have been written by many of the magazine's renowned past editors: Mario Bellini, Fran?ois Burkhardt, Cesare Maria Casati, Stefano Casciani, Germano Celant, Manolo De Giorgi, Fulvio Irace, Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani, Alessandro Mendini, Lisa Licitra Ponti, Ettore Sottsass Jr., Luigi Spine … [Click Below for Full Description]

Moscow: Rabotnik prosveshcheniia, 1928. 48 pp. 17x13 cm. In original wrappers. Foxing, otherwise very good and clean copy. First and only edition. One of 5000 copies. Very rare. Illustrated throughout. The handbook from the series 'be your own master' gives the instructions how to turn the march into impressive performance. Every Soviet organization took part in regular marches and demonstrations, because these events considered as celebrations, not protest. Looking for the most powerful decorations, the groups of people used the posters, cloth with slogans, flags. This book explained how to choose the right emblem, slogans and effectively walk with them, what clothes to wear and what else could be used. The interesting point of this book is creation of the political plywood puppet. This toy with moving parts appeared in the middle 1920s and gained more and more popularity for marches. They often displayed the caricatures on the foreign politicians. For example, 1927 May Day demonstration performed several puppets depicting Chiang Kai-shek because of Chinese revolution. The positive marionettes portrayed workers, showing increases in the output. The advices how to decorate a car, a bicycle and even a horse carriage are suppied with the illustrations giving the historical photo-documentation of such demonstrations. [ANARCHISM] CONTI, Joe (ed)
[Enrico Arrigoni]. First Edition. Eresia was founded in 1928 by the Italian-American bricklayer Enrico Arrigoni as a journal of individualist anarchism. Nine issues appeared before publication was suspended in March 1929; three more issues would be published in 1931-2. Only the first nine issues are included here. Arrigoni (1898-1988) was a Milanese anarchist, laborer, and social critic; after immigrating to the U.S. ca. 1925 he began contributing to Italian-American journals under the pseudonym "Frank Brand." Arrigoni remained active well into old age, publishing work as late as the 1980s. He was especially active in the movement to aid Cuban anarchists who were persecuted following the 1959 revolution. Eresia forms an important bridge between the Italian-American insurrectionary anarchist tradition of the early 20th century and post-WW2 libertarianism, and it is uncommon: OCLC notes two holdings in North America (Michigan & NYPL), a few others in Europe, of varying degrees of completeness. Nine consecutive issues (issued irregularly), bound into patterned paste-paper boards. Quarto; each issue 32pp; some illus. Binding chipped at corners; moderate wear and toning to contents, including an obtrusive, amateur scotch-tape repair to gutter of issue no. 9; still Good, solidly bound and complete, with no markings or loss. Text entirely in Italian. [Attributes: First Edition]

[SOCIALIST PARTY] SPIESS, William (photographer)
Spiess Studio, 1928. Scarce panoramic photo, captured on the third day of this momentous convention of the Socialist Party, the first to be held following the death of Eugene Debs in 1926 and the first to nominate Norman Thomas as the Party's candidate for President. Thomas (who is visible at center-right of this panorama) would be so nominated for the next five Presidential elections in a row, making him one of the most prolific also-rans in American presidential history. This convention also marked the beginning of a factional split that would greatly diminish the Party's influence through the decade to come, as a younger, "militant" wing of the Party sought increasingly to distance itself from the "Old Guard" socialists who had come to prominence during the first two decades of the century under the leadership of Debs. An excellent and uncommon photograph, capturing the Socialist Party of America in the twilight of its golden age. Original (vintage) silver-gelatin print, ca 8" x 35" (image area 6-1/2" x 33"). In contemporary (possibly original) glazed frame. Sight condition fine but for one small poorly-developed area at left side of image, partially obscuring the faces of three subjects (not examined outside of frame). Captioned in image, with studio mark in image lower right.
