        The Well of Loneliness

The Pegasus Press, Paris, 1928 Pegasus edition, third impressionOctavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt, top edge stained black. With the dust jacket. Some sporadic staining to the contents, boards discoloured, just about very good in the tanned and somewhat chipped dust jacket. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the half-title leaf, "To Stephen Vincent Benét a very great poet from his sincere admirer Radclyffe Hall Paris March 13th 1929".         Twelve Days. An account of a journey across the Bakhtiari Mountains in South-western Persia.

The Hogarth Press: London, 1928 - Octavo. Original marbled brown and black cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Ends and corners nicked, occasional light spotting within, but an excellent copy in the bright smart jacket with a few marks and closed tears. With 32 plates. First edition, first impression, presentation copy of Sackville-West's Persian travelogue to her then lover Hilda "Stoker" Matheson, in an excellent example of the scarce jacket, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "From V. Dec. 1928". This book was one of several inscribed by Vita and given to her then-lover Hilda Matheson (1888-1940), whom she nicknamed "Stoker", in December 1928. Matheson was Director of Talks at the BBC, and on 11th December Vita had delivered a radio broadcast there, appropriately on the subject of "The Modern Woman". They spent the night together, and Hilda was off work "sick" on the 12th. On the 13th, in one of the over 100 letters from Hilda to Vita which survive, she wrote "All day - ever since that blessed and ever to be remembered indisposition, I have been thinking of you - bursting with you - and wanting you - oh my god wanting you." It is possible that this book was gifted by Vita to "Stoker" during this "ever to be remembered indisposition", or at some other moment in this month at the height of their affair. The couple also travelled in Savoy together in 1929, and Vita dedicated her poem from that venture "Storm in the Mountains" (1929) to Hilda. When Hilda died in December 1940 after a botched hospital operation, Vita in an obituary described her characteristically as a "sturdy little pony". Cross & Ravenscroft-Hulme A17.         A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles; Founded Mainly on the Materials Collected by the Philological Society

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1928. Hardcover. Near Fine. 10 volumes in 20. Original publishers 1/2 leather. 33cm. Former owner's bookplate in each volume. Virtually as new except for creases on two leaves in volumes II (apparently where a printing error caused those leaves to be misfolded and later trimmed to fit) and some mostly light white cover streaking/spotting on modest portions of perhaps half of the volumes. This incomparable dictionary was originally issued in a large number of fascicules (the exact number seems to vary among surviving sets) over the course of 41 years (1888-1928). Our 10 vols. in 20 set contains the complete dictionary but did not reproduce some introductory, prefatory or other non-essential material that appeared in the fascicules. Our set was also published as 10 vols. in 12 with only Volumes IX and X split into 2 volumes. A supplemental volume, not present here, was issued in 1933.

Several mild creases to overlapping edges, else a fine copy. Rare.. (#142812). First edition. Printed as a supplement to the March 1928 issue of L'ASTRONOMIE. A presentation copy with brief signed inscription by Esnault- Pelterie at top of page [1]. "Expounds original hypotheses of space flight that the author began to formulate in 1908 independently of the rocketry and astronautical ideas of pioneers Konstantin E. Tsiolkovskii, R. H. Goddard, and Herman Oberth. Calculates optimum rocket shapes, motion of a rocket in a vacuum, and safe acceleration speeds for manned flight. Presents the earliest known suggestions of atomic or nuclear rocket propulsion for planetary space missions, and considers the possibility of extraterrestrial life" (Pisano and Lewis). "One of the earliest and really serious papers on interplanetary travel and on the exploration of the upper atmosphere, by means of rockets. Esnault-Pelleterie"s study is independent of the slightly earlier treatise, in German, by Oberth, which he states he had not seen. The author devotes special attention to the problem of the escape velocity necessary to overcome the earth's gravitational pull, which he estimates at 10,000 meters per second. It was Esnault-Pelterie who coined the term Astronautics for the science of space flight. The present paper appeared as special supplement of the BULLETIN DE LA SOCIÉTÉ ASTRONOMIQUE DE FRANCE, année 42, with a separate half-title and title- page" (Interlibrum). Ciancone 65. Interlibrum 270 #114. Ley, Rockets, Missiles, and Space Travel, revised edition, 1957, p. 505. Norman 714. Pisano and Lewis 1197. Norman 714.
