A New English Dictionary on Historical Principles; Founded Mainly on the Materials Collected by the Philological Society. Edited by James H. Murray.

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1888–1928 - 10 volumes bound in 20, large quarto (340 x 263 mm). Publisher's dark red straight-grain quarter morocco, red cloth sides, titles and university crest to spines gilt, top edges gilt, dark red endpapers. Typical light variation to spines, a couple headcaps expertly restored; an excellent, handsomely bound set. First edition in book form of "the greatest treasure-house of any language in the world, unrivalled for its comprehensiveness and ease of consultation as well as for its reliability and scholarship" (PMM). "The scheme of 'a completely new English Dictionary' was conceived in 1858 Herbert Coleridge and after him Dr. F. J. Furnivall, were the first editors. Their work, which covered 20 years, consisted mainly in the collection of materials, and it was not until Dr. J. A. H. Murray took the matter up in 1878 that the preparation of the Dictionary began to take active form . The essential feature of the Dictionary is its historical method, by which the meaning and form of the words are traced from their earliest appearance on the basis of an immense number of quotations, collected by more than 800 voluntary workers. The Dictionary contains a record of 414,825 words, whose history is illustrated by 1,827,306 quotations" (Drabble, 728). The Dictionary was originally issued in fascicles which were then gathered into book form. After Murray's death the editing was entrusted to his colleagues Henry Bradley, W. A. Craigie, and C. T. Onions. "The scale of the OED was astonishing by comparison with that of any English dictionary published before the end of the nineteenth century. Murray had revolutionized the whole process by which the English language was mapped" (ODNB). These volumes are titled "The Oxford Dictionary" to the spine, whereas the trade binding was bound as, "A New English Dictionary". The University Press had used "The Oxford Dictionary" as the title in its catalogues and advertisements from at least 1904. The dictionary was officially renamed "The Oxford English Dictionary" in 1933 on the publication of the first supplement, edited by W. A. Craigie and C. T. Onions. Printing and the Mind of Man 371. I SEND IT EMS А.И.

A very lovely copy of this fragile production.       New York: William Morrow & Company, 1928 - Octavo. Original navy cloth, spine lettered in silver, front board illustrated with palm trees in silver. With the dust jacket. Spine a little rolled, spine ends and corners lightly bumped and rubbed, dust jacket spine browned, jacket joints partially split, some nicks and small tears to extremities including head of spine, remnants of tape repair to jacket verso, overall a very good copy. Photographic frontispiece. Ownership inscription to front free endpaper. First edition, first printing, of Mead's first and pioneering book, which launched her career as an internationally recognised anthropologist. Based on her immersive field work in American Samoa in 1925, it is one of the most widely read anthropology books ever published; its unwavering influence during the following decades is evidenced by the publication of Derek Freeman's denunciation, Margaret Mead and Samoa: The Making and Unmaking of an Anthropological Myth, in 1983. His refutation of Mead's conclusions sparked a new wave of arguments regarding the nature and nurture debate, which became known as the Mead-Freeman controversy. [Attributes: First Edition]

"... must be judged the first full-fledged dystopian view of the effects of technology." - Anatomy of Wonder (1995) 1-35. "Forster described this story as 'a counter-blast to one of the heavens of H. G. Wells.' It has been often reprinted." - Lewis, Utopian Literature, p. 65. Four of the remaining five stories have supernatural motifs and are "excellent," according to Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 646. Anatomy of Wonder (1981) 1-74; (1987) 1-35; and (2004) II-414. Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 3-139. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 803. Clareson, Science Fiction in America, 1870s-1930s 307. Clarke, Tale of the Future (1978), p. 56. Negley, Utopian Literature: A Bibliography 378. A fine copy in very good printed dust jacket with light chipping at spine ends, more so to bottom edge with loss of several letters of the publisher's imprint, spine and rear panel separated along spine fold, and mild tanning to spine. An attractive example of this delicate jacket. (#149582)

        SIPURIM [= stories]

Tomer, Tel Aviv, Eretz Israel 1928 - 110, [2] pages. Edition of 2,000 copies. This is not the orignal binding. Elisheva is a pseudonym taken by the poet Ilizbth Ivanova Jirkov-Bihobski (20 September 1888-27 March 1949). She was born in Russia to an Orthodox Christian family and immigrated to Israel in 1925. Her husband was the publisher and journalist Simon Bichovsky. Of her family she wrote: Of course, I am not Jewish race, but I am not a true Russian either. My maternal grandfather was Irish, ran away from home in his youth, settled in Russia and married a German born woman. I was raised by an English family and so my siblings and I considered ourselves English. I was raised by my mother's sister because my mother died when I was 3 years old. Elizabeth was born in the city of Ryazan, Russia, daughter of Ivan Jirkov, who was first a teacher at a primary school, then became a publisher. She studied at the Gymnasium for girls in Moscow, and later took courses in pedagogy from the Association of Teachers and educators, graduating in 1910. In 1908, at the age of twenty, became interested in Yiddish and Hebrew languages, influenced by her Jewish friends. She studied Yiddish and Hebrew, translated from Hebrew to Russian, and after a while began to write original Hebrew poetry. The subject of Judaism brought her into contact with writer Simon Bichovsky whom she later married. She did not convert and remained a Christian, and was known as "Ruth from the banks of the Volga". In 1925, the couple moved to Eretz Israel where she published poetry in Hebrew, some original and some translated from the Russian. She also translated from Hebrew into Russian works of Gershon Hoffman, Yosef Haim Brenner and others. In her youth Lea Goldberg, who was to become the great writer and poet, met Elisheva when visiting Kovno in 1928 and wrote in her diary her impression of Elisheva: "Today I was at her home. She made a great impression on me. She is simple and modest and the sensation that surrounds her does not affect her. She is a Jewess, a Hebrew, as if she been one her entire life. Tragedy beset her in 1932 when her husband died suddenly leaving her with a 9 year old daughter and unable to make a living. She sunk into poverty and lived in a shack that leaked in winter in the Monterfiore neighborhood in Tel Aviv. During WW II her daughter enlisted in the British military and married a British soldier, Danny Little and lived with him in Africa, and so she remained totally alone. She died in Tiberias, to where she moved in order to recover from arthritis and is buried at the Kineret cemetery. A few of her songs were set to music by Daniel Sambursky, Shaika Faikov, Hava Alberstein and others and were performed by Alexandra, Hava Alberstein and others. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Money Illusion

1st Edition, 2nd printing. xv, 245pp. Octavo. Original green cloth with black lettering. Five black and white charts within the text. Textblock is crisp and clean. A very good copy.Inscribed from Fisher to Professor Frederick Soddy in January 1929 on front free endpaper. Soddy was a chemist who become know for his social commentary later in life. His scientific work on radioactivity with Ernest Rutherford became the foundation for all subsequent work in the field. In 1910 Soddy was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1921 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry for his work on the theory of isotopes. This book, which discusses the fallacy of thinking about things in nominal currency instead of real terms, would have been of great interest to Soddy, who by 1920 had became a socialist and believed in the reform of the monetary system. At the time his ideas were disregarded, but since the 1970s they have now been seen as central to ecological economics and green activists. Previously a part of the Gerald M. Meier library, the Konosuke Matsushita Professor of International Economics and Policy Analysis, Emeritus, at Stanford Graduate School of Business. Inscribed copies from the author to other scientists and Nobel Laureates are very rare.

Jean Giono Janv. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
