Menu - Program] Rustlers Bull Sheet Big Feed of the A & F (Abercrombie & Fitch) Rustlers

1928 - Two broadsides - Spring Roundup, Elks Ranch, May 16, 1928. Most likely a coming out party for the new owner and chief operator, James S. Cobb & Otis L. Guernsey, of Abercrombie & Fitch. Before the head throbbing music and horrendous perfume filled mall shops, A & F was a brand that outfitted presidents and pioneers, authors and actors, explorers and icons. David T. Abercrombie founded "Abercrombie Co." in a downtown shop at 36 South Street in Manhattan on June 4, 1892. His infatuation with the great outdoors fueled his search for the best gadgets and gear which he provided for the "gentlemen camper". An early enthusiast was a New York Lawyer, Ezra Fitch, who grew tired of his day job and purchased a major share of the company and eventually entirely took control in 1907. In 1928, Fitch retired from the company and sold his shares to his brother-in-law, James S. Cobb. Soon Cobb became president and Otis L. Guernsey, an employee of the store, became vice president. This Menu/Program seems to be the debut of the new guard with a listing of all the participants, a "Grub List" which suggests the availability of alcohol during prohibition - "COCKTAIL SHAKERS-used in serving tonic tonight For Sale in our Prohibition Department although never advertised." Also, a question and answer with various attendees. Clean copy, closed 2 cm. tear at top of both sheets. Orig. orange card stock. Very good

Rare in the dust jacket. Amelia Earhart crafted a thrilling narrative for her first published work in 1928, detailing her first flight across the Atlantic with William Stultz. Combining actual log entries made during the voyage with childhood memories and her early interest in flight, Earhart's tale ends with a broader discussion of women and aviation, breaking ground for the women's rights movement in the mid 30's. She would later make the first female solo flight across the Atlantic and then disappear in the Pacific during her attempted first female circumnavigation of the globe. Named one of National Geographic's "100 greatest adventure books of all time." "Isolation breeds distrust and differences of outlook. Anything which tends to annihilate distance destroys isolation, and brings the world and its' peoples closer together." (Earhart). about Fine in Very Good dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition]

        The Tower

London: Macmillan, 1928. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Fine/Fine. Superb First Impression (one of only 2000 copies) of this cornerstone of the Modern Movement, "a peak in English poetry" (Connolly), "the summit of Yeats's creative achievement. He thought it the best book he had written, and he was right." (ODNB) Small 8vo: vi,110,[2, ads]pp. Publisher's olive-green cloth, spine and upper cover lettered and elaborately decorated in gilt with one of Thomas Sturge Moore's most beautiful cover engravings, depicting Ballylee and its reflection; all edges untrimmed; sea-green pictorial dust jacket printed in black, repeating Moore's cover design and priced 6/-. A very Fine, bright copy, apparently unread, in a virtually flawless jacket marred only by several faint tape ghosts unseen on the verso. Connolly 56a. Wade 158. The Tower opens with a meditation on aging or, more specifically, on how to escape it. In "Sailing to Byzantium," the poet dreams of leaving Ireland, "no country for old men," to be reincarnated as a singing mechanical bird in a Byzantine court. In "The Tower," Yeats laments his lost love for Maude Gonne, "a strikingly beautiful former débutante, with the height and presence of a Valkyrie" (ONDB), and ruminates on reconciling his youthful spirit with his aging body. The collection also contains his two great sequences on history and violence, ‘Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen,' inspired by the Bolshevik Revolution, and ‘Meditations in Time of Civil War,' an account of the chaos that gripped Ireland from 1922 to 1923. The tower of the title was Thoor Ballylee, in County Galway, near Coole, in which Yeats and his family lived during the 1920s, when they weren't in their Dublin townhouse. This sixteenth-century Norman castle consisted of four floors with just one room on each, connected by a spiral stone stairway built into the seven-foot thickness of the massive outer wall. Each floor had a window overlooking the river which flowed alongside. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         Henry Ford signs first edition copy of "The Story of Mary and Her Little Lamb" , book published by him and wife Clara Jane Bryant in 1928

Michigan, Circa 1928. 5" x 7.875". "Hardcover first edition copy of "The Story of Mary and Her Little Lamb" published in Dearborn, Michigan in 1928 by "Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ford", with half-title page signed "Henry Ford" in black fountain pen near center right. Book has faux leather brown covers gilt-embossed with book title, and marbleized endpapers. Signature is clear and strong. Book in overall very fine condition. Missing front end paper, loosened binding at front hinge, and former Pontiac, MI book owner address label affixed to front end paper. Expected wear includes some light cover scuffs and paperclip ghost impressions. Book measures 5"" x 7.875""."This is the story of Mary and her lamb, the school, and all the other persons and incidents noted in the famous verses. There was a Mary, and there was a lamb", begins this delightful account of the real Mary of Sarah Josepha Hale's verses. This children's book includes facsimiles of historical documents, drawings, photographs, and stills from the 1912 silent film of the same name to recount the personal history of Mary Sawyer (1806-1889), a Massachusetts farm girl who famously befriended an abandoned lamb. The name of Henry Ford (1863-1947) is synonymous with cars. Ford was one of the founders of the Ford Motor Company established in 1903. Ford perfected mass production techniques, which enabled the manufacture of cheaper cars. Automobiles would revolutionize transportation throughout the world, and millions of Americans with disposable income discovered the delight and danger of driving.Ford's personal fortune thus guaranteed, he pursued numerous extracurricular interests. In addition to running his corporation, Ford became involved with publishing. He subsidized a weekly journal called the Dearborn Independent in the 1920s. "The Story of Mary's Little Lamb" was not Ford's first foray into children's book publishing; he published "The Case Against the Little White Slaver", an anti-smoking book, in 1914.Ford was an extremely polarizing figure. He championed a living wage, a 40-hour work week, and the hiring of women, blacks, and the handicapped, yet he also publically espoused anti-Semitic views. Ford's publishing of children's and public service books only further complicates this image."

The Station. Athos: Treasures and Men.

Duckworth 1928 - The First UK Printing published by Duckworth in 1928. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Original Blue cloth has a little rubbing at the corners. Gilt titling remains very bright. Light toning to the text block with a little spotting to the prelims. Pages remain clean. Free from erasures and inscriptions. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. A little toned to the spine with mild edge wear with a little loss to the lower front edge and spine ends. A few professional Japanese tissue paper repairs to the verso. The coloured designs to the covers remain very bright. Mild vertical crease to the spine. The wrapper looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. One of Byron's earliest titles with a frontispiece of Simopetra and 32 further B/W photographic illustrations, mainly by the author. In a 1984 reprint of The Station, John Julius Norwich, himself a life-long traveller, writes in a very erudite Introduction : 'No better portrait of the Holy Mountain exists than this, written as it was nearly sixty years ago; nor is it likely to be surpassed in the future. Here, in short, is a classic. And a classic it will remain. What higher praise than this can be gained by someone who was only twenty-two when he wrote the book. Robert Byron changed the English-speaking world's view of Byzantine art and culture through 'The Station' and 'The Byzantine Achievement', published the year after. This book is therefore more than a travel book and more than a study of the monastic society of Mount Athos. It is also a historical enquiry into the civilization of Byzantium seen in its only surviving manifestation. With typical Byzantine complexity the obscure title of the book is only explained in the last sentence : 'This is the Holy Mountain Athos, station of a faith where all the years have stopped'.' Byron was to go on to write his classic title 'The Road To Oxiana' in 1937 before being tragically killed aged 35 in 1941 after his ship, the 'SS Jonathan Holt', was torpedoed by U-97 a submarine in the North Atlantic. His body was never found. A very sharp title and scarce title to find with such attributes. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1928 - 395x290mm. An original sequence of six cartoons, in ink on paper, depicting the scenes from the final day of the first test at Brisbane in 1928: the England team cheerful at the overnight rain, the Australians glum, the final scene being a procession of Australian batsmen as they were dismissed in quick succession. Signed by Mailey in the lower right hand corner. Mounted, framed and glazed. The Brisbane Test of 1928 saw England utilise the best of the conditions to build a large first innings lead only for the heavy overnight rain to produce an unplayable sticky wicket, which saw Australia quickly bowled out for a paltry 66 to loose by 675 runs. Don Bradman, pictured here amongst the procession of dismissed batsmen, playing in his first test, made 18 and 1 and was dropped for the next test. Arthur Mailey (1886-1967) was a successful leg break bowler, taking 99 wickets from Australia in 21 tests between 1921 and 1929, however his lasting talent was as a cartoonist and he had a particular knack of caricaturing his team mates and opponents, his ready wit creating a humorous narrative with a sequence of cartoons. He drew for the Sydney Arrow and Bulletin and the London Bystander as well as writing and illustrating a number of books, most notably his account of the Bodyline series, And Then Came Larwood and his autobiography, 10 for 66 And All That. Although individual sketches appear occasionally complete cartoon sequences are rarely seen in commerce. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

First and only edition in the original German of an account of the Dänisch-Hallesche mission on the Carnatic coast in southeast India, from the beginning in 1705 to 1736. The Dänisch-Hallesche mission was the first Protestant mission and many resulting reports were published in the magazine Hallesche Berichte . Niekamp digested its first 44 chapters and organized them in two main parts: the first dealing with geography, inhabitants, languages etc. and the second treating the mission itself in chronological order; this if followed by a comprehensive index. The work contains a preface by Gotthilf August Francke, the son of the August Hermann Francke, who was one of the driving forces in the creation of the mission. The turn-ins caused some offsetting through the endpapers to the margins of the first and last few leaves, otherwise a very good copy, with only some occasional spots. The binding is rubbed with chips and superficial wear to the spine, but otherwise in good condition.

        Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man

London: Faber & Gwyer Limited,, 1928. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt, top edge pale yellow. With the dust jacket. Ownership inscription to front flap of jacket. Spine gently rolled and lightly faded, light foxing to prelims and endmatter; an excellent copy in the jacket with nicks to extremities, minor loss at head of spine. First edition, first impression, in Keynes's state "IIb", with all edges trimmed. Keynes's notes that "it seems to be entirely artificial to give priority of issue to either of the classes, since they were both printed and published at the same time". The first impression was issued in a run of 1,500 copies, and printed without the author's name anywhere in the book; the dust jacket stating that the author wished to remain anonymous. This anonymity, however, was not long preserved due to the immediate popularity of the book, and the text was changed to include Sassoon's name on the title page during the printing run of the second edition; 500 of which appear without it. It was included in all subsequent impressions, which totalled ten impressions within two years.
