First edition, first impression, of this collection of Forster stories including his extraordinarily prescient "The Machine Stops" (1909), which imagines a blighted world in which the totality of the human race lives within a machine that functions not unlike an all-encompassing Facebook, immediately connecting, and at the same time irrevocably separating, everyone. It has been described as "the first full-scale emergence of the twentieth-century anti-utopia" (Hillegas, The Future as Nightmare, pp. 82-94).

        THE SHUNNED HOUSE.

Athol, Mass.:: W. Paul Cook / The Recluse Press,. 1928.. First edition sheets, one of only 100 copies of Lovecraft's first book of fiction bound by Arkam House in 1961. Bibliographer S. T. Joshi calls it Lovecraft's "legendary stillborn first 'book'." W. Paul Cook had wanted to publish "Shunned House" in the first issue of The Recluse but, for reasons unknown, decided instead to print the story as a small book with a preface by Frank Belknap. He printed approximately 300 copies of the sheets in 1928 but neither bound nor published the book at that time. In 1934, Robert Barlow (later to be Lovecraft's literary executor) reportedly received 225 copies of the sheets and distributed around 50, some unbound and some bound in various bindings over the next few years. Arkham House subsequently obtained approximately 150 useable sets of sheets and issued 50 unbound copies circa 1959 and the 100 bound in black cloth boards as seen here. This copy with copyright cancel label in Currey's first state with "100 copies bound by Arkham House, 1961" printed in pencil at bottom of label. Small octavo, black cloth boards lettered in gilt on spine. Tiny scratch to bottom front board, spine lettering rubbed, mostly affecting "Lovecraft" and "Arkham House," otherwise near fine as issued, without dust jacket. Joshi 1-A-5. Currey C(2). .

        Romancero Gitano 1924-1927 (Gyspy Ballads).

Buenos Aires: Sur, 1928. First edition of Garcia Lorca's classic work. Octavo, bound in three quarters calf over marbled boards. Signed by Federico Garcia Lorca, who has drawn a face next to his signature. Books signed by Garcia Lorca are exceedingly rare, as he was killed in 1936. In very good condition with contemporary bookplate to the pastedown. Romancero Gitano (translated as Gypsy Ballads) is a poetry collection by Spanish writer Federico Garcia Lorca, published in 1928. It is his best known book of poetry. It is composed of eighteen romances with subjects like the night, death, the sky, and the moon. All of the poems deal with the Romani people and their culture. The work reflects the pains of a people who live on the margins of society and who feel persecuted by the representatives of authority and for their struggle against that authority. However, Garcia Lorca himself points out that his interest is focused not on describing a specific situation, but on the clash that occurs again and again between the forces encountered: in a poem that describes the struggle between the Civil Guard and the gypsies, he calls these sides "Roman" and "Carthaginian" to imply the permanence of the conflict. "Their imagery is often vividly synaesthetic, inventive and unexpected . . . the poems celebrate and lament the concrete and the mysterious, in language that manages both to be startlingly fresh and obviously in debt to a rich tradition, that of the traditional Spanish ballad and its offshoots" (Gyln Pursglove).
