20 hrs. 40 min.: Our Flight in the Friendship

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1928. First edition. about Fine/Very Good. An about Fine copy of the book, sharp, square and unread and with the gilt bright. In a Very Good dust jacket that has several small chips and tears. Rare in the dust jacket. Amelia Earhart crafted a thrilling narrative for her first published work in 1928, detailing her first flight across the Atlantic with William Stultz. Combining actual log entries made during the voyage with childhood memories and her early interest in flight, Earhart's tale ends with a broader discussion of women and aviation, breaking ground for the women's rights movement in the mid 30's. She would later make the first female solo flight across the Atlantic and then disappear in the Pacific during her attempted first female circumnavigation of the globe. Named one of National Geographic's "100 greatest adventure books of all time." "Isolation breeds distrust and differences of outlook. Anything which tends to annihilate distance destroys isolation, and brings the world and its' peoples closer together." (Earhart). about Fine in Very Good dust jacket.

        The Well of Loneliness

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1928. With a commentary by Havelock Ellis. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge black, others uncut. With the dust jacket. Extremities lightly rubbed, spine ends bruised, contents tanned with occasional foxing, overall an excellent copy in the uncommon dust jacket, soiled with some loss to extremities, neat tape repairs to verso. First edition, first impression, with "whip" on page 50. This notorious lesbian novel went through only two small printings in Britain due to its controversial publication. It was the focus of vicious criticism from the editor of The Sunday Express, James Douglas, who vilified Hall's work as pornographic "moral poison". Government officials pressured Jonathan Cape into withdrawing the novel and when Cape slyly leased the rights to a Parisian press, who smuggled copies into Britain, those too were seized by the police and the publisher was prosecuted at trial. The Well of Loneliness "was subsequently banned in England … This led to the order of the chief magistrate, Sir Chartres Biron, that all copies be destroyed, and that literary merit presented no grounds for defence. Despite protests from literary figures such as Virginia Woolf, Leonard Woolf, and John Buchan, Biron's judgement was upheld by a Court of Appeal" (ODNB). It was not republished until 1949. First editions in the dust jacket are distinctly uncommon.

Arabia of the Wahhabis; together with 'Across Arabia', Royal Geographical Society, 1920

Constable, 1928 - 1st edition. Hardcover. Original green cloth, gilt spine lettering, spine very slightly browned, frontispiece, 28 plates, diagrams, large folding colour map at the end, foxing to half-title and to the margins of a few pages, and some minor spotting to the front text block, some pages uncut, tear to the edge of one uncut prelim leaf. Tight, square binding. Philby, one of the great explorers of the early 20th century, here continues the story of his travels in Arabia in 1916-17 when he led a small British diplomatic mission to meet Ibn Saud, the Wahhabi ruler of Nejd. Generally this copy is in very good condition. Accompanying the book is the rare, complete Royal Geographical Society issue of December 1920, with excellent blue covers and very clean pages, in which is printed Philby's paper of May 1920 in which he recounted his first journey from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea, with his photographs and a large fold-out colour map. Philby's explorations of Arabia brought him into contact with Wahhabi culture and belief, so this article makes an interesting and valuable precursor to his book eight years later. A unique pairing. The limitation page in Volume I calls for 50 sets on hand-made paper, and the reduced number is announced on the errata slip. This work has always been one of the most praised and cherished illustrated botanical books of the seventeenth century, and the its modern reprinting by the Cresset Press was a success: the plates, which include a wonderful pair of views of formal gardens in summer and winter, are beautifully presented; the text is fluently translated and rendered in handsome calligraphy; and there are useful prefaces to both volumes. Ransom, p. 238, # 8.

        She Walks in Beauty

New York: Brentano's. 1928. Third printing, the month after the first. Contemporary ownership signature of Toledo, Ohio native Mary Lucille Buskey, slight wear at the spine ends, very good plus lacking the dustwrapper. Additionally Signed by Dawn Powell, presumably at a contemporary date: "Sincerely, Dawn Powell". A pleasing copy of the author's exceptionally uncommon second book (and in practice the first, after she repudiated her first novel Whither), a novel set in the Midwest of Sinclair Lewis, Sherwood Anderson and Edgar Lee Masters, but wittier and more ironic. Powell was prolific and well-regarded but until a fairly recent and well-deserved revival, precipitated by the Tim Page biography, mostly forgotten. For forty years she was an ornament of the New York literary world and if you read her books it's easy to see why. .

Scrapbook]: Penn State: Alpha Gamma Rho

State College, Pennsylvania 1928 - Oblong folio. Measuring 11" x 14". String-tied brown suede over paper boards with a Penn State emblem on the front board. Contains ephemera and 200 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.75" x 2" and 7" x 9.5", some with captions. Very good album with worn edges and some small tears with near fine photographs.A scrapbook kept by Ray O. Freudenberger while he was beginning his college education at Penn State University in 1928. During his time at the university he was a part of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity as well as involved in numerous sports teams and clubs. The album begins with a large photograph of the original fraternity house (which was destroyed by fire in 1966, and rebuilt in 1968). This is followed by another large photo showing a group of fraternity men and their dates posed on the steps of the house. The following pages are full of autographs and messages from his fraternity brothers and other classmates which say things like, "My old pal! Let's roll a few games," and "O really do remember from one house party to another." The photographs show school events; track meets and football games, as well as dances and classroom photos. One section shows an R.O.T.C. group at attention in full uniform with blimps flying overhead. Freudenberger photographed the campus in various seasons including a large section of the campus in the winter of 1928. There are also photos of a University building during construction. Many of the photos show Freudenberger and his fraternity brothers around campus, at their house, and with dates before dances.Freudenberger was interested in the University's sports programs. He participated in some, and was also the manager of the men's basketball team. One section shows clippings of the football team and their schedule for the year of 1928. Additionally there are photographs and clippings from the boxing, track, rugby, and wrestling teams. The Alpha Gamma Rho house is shown in large photos featuring the interior and exterior, the lounge with fireplace, dining area, and formal living room. The final pages of the album are full of ticket stubs, programs, letters, and dance cards from his freshman year at Penn State. These include the winter sports schedules, a card announcing his admission to the freshman class, and Christmas cards from friends. Our research indicated he was living in the Pittsburgh area in 1941 and worked as an electric line engineer. An extensive look at the freshman year of a young man at Penn State University in 1928 with heavy emphasis on sports. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Willy Pogany's Mother Goose

New York: Thomas Nelson & Sons, (1928). First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Willy Pogany. Quarto, unpaginated (about 100pp.), illustrated by Willy Pogany. A fine, bright, copy in the publisher's blue boards with bright, handsome gilt decoration. This is the first state of the first trade edition, with the misspelling "lalch" instead of "latch" on the "Cross-patch" rhyme near the end of the text. SIGNED by Pogany on the title page. Very slight smudge to part of the signature (see image), and unfortunately lacking the dust jacket, but this is altogether a stunning copy. The scanned image of the cover does not do justice to the brightness of the gilt or "blue-ness" of the blue cloth, so feel free to request more images. An impressive copy, uncommon signed.

London: Heinemann,, 1928. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to upper board and spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a quarter blue morocco slipcase. An excellent copy in the lightly chipped and little frayed dust jacket rather faded at the spine. First edition, first impression. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, "For Harold Kamp from W. Somerset Maugham July 6, 1928" and with a letter from Maugham regarding the opportunity to inscribe this copy. One of the author's undoubted masterpieces and of considerable scarcity in presentation state. Kamp would seem to have been an avid collector of contemporary fiction and an effective solicitor of authors' inscriptions.
