Text in double columns. A little bumping to the head and foot of the fragile parchment spine, but essentially a fine copy with clean pages. The uncommon dust jacket has had some professional restoration, very sympathetically undertaken using Japanese tissue and careful colouring. An excellent copy of the first title in Rodker's 'The Church and Witchcraft' series and the first translation into English of this notorious witch hunter's handbook, first published in 1487. At his best Pierre Loti was unquestionably the finest descriptive writer of the day. But he was not satisfied with this exterior charm; he desired to blend with it a moral sensibility of the extremest refinement, at once sensual and ethereal. Many of his best books are long sobs of remorseful memory, so personal, so intimate, that an English reader is amazed to find such depth of feeling compatible with the power of minutely and publicly recording what is felt. Pierre Loti remains, in the mechanism of style and cadence, one of the most original and most perfect French writers of the second half of the 19th century. Superb First Impression (one of only 2000 copies) of this cornerstone of the Modern Movement, "a peak in English poetry" (Connolly), "the summit of Yeats's creative achievement. He thought it the best book he had written, and he was right." (ODNB), Small 8vo: vi,110,[2, ads]pp. Publisher's olive-green cloth, spine and upper cover lettered and elaborately decorated in gilt with one of Thomas Sturge Moore's most beautiful cover engravings, depicting Ballylee and its reflection; all edges untrimmed; sea-green pictorial dust jacket printed in black, repeating Moore's cover design and priced 6/-. A very Fine, bright copy, apparently unread, in a virtually flawless jacket marred only by several faint tape ghosts unseen on the verso. Connolly 56a. Wade 158. & The Tower opens with a meditation on aging or, more specifically, on how to escape it. In "Sailing to Byzantium," the poet dreams of leaving Ireland, "no country for old men," to be reincarnated as a singing mechanical bird in a Byzantine court. In "The Tower," Yeats laments his lost love for Maude Gonne, "a strikingly beautiful former débutante, with the height and presence of a Valkyrie" (ONDB), and ruminates on reconciling his youthful spirit with his aging body. The collection also contains his two great sequences on history and violence, ‘Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen,' inspired by the Bolshevik Revolution, and ‘Meditations in Time of Civil War,' an account of the chaos that gripped Ireland from 1922 to 1923. The tower of the title was Thoor Ballylee, in County Galway, near Coole, in which Yeats and his family lived during the 1920s, when they weren't in their Dublin townhouse. This sixteenth-century Norman castle consisted of four floors with just one room on each, connected by a spiral stone stairway built into the seven-foot thickness of the massive outer wall. Each floor had a window overlooking the river which flowed alongside. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER

      Privately Printed. Florence, Italy. 1928. FIRST EDITION. LIMITED EDITION. 8vo. (9.1 x 6.6 inches). One of 1000 numbered copies, signed by Lawrence. A bright and clean copy internally with a small previous owners bookplate on the front paste down endpaper. In the original mulberry coloured paper covered boards with white printed paper label to the spine and black Phoenix design on the front board. The label is a little rubbed and darkened and a small piece of the top corner, not affecting the lettering, has come away and been re-glued in place. One small split, without loss, to the bottom 1.5 inches of the front hinge and some minor rubbing to the edges but overall a very good copy of this important book. Printed at the Tipografia Giuntina in Florence for Lawrence, and at his own expense, the book was offered for sale in the spring of 1928 for the price of Two Pounds. The fears of Police raids and the imminent suppression of the book in both England and America saw Lawrence selling the last copies for Four pounds by December that year and ordering another edition, of only 200 copies on common paper, from the printers. The literary merits of Lawrence's novel have been the subject of much debate but, like it or not, the book proved to be a hugely important work in the battle against censorship.

Catalogue of Works, p. 195 (with a composition date of 1929, contrary to the dating of this manuscript). & & "After the Revolution, Grechaninov lost his pension, and felt uneasy in Soviet Russia; so he readily took an opportunity to visit western Europe (notably London and Prague), on the invitation of a rich American, in 1922, and after further visits he settled in Paris in 1925, composing much and making a living as a pianist. In 1939 he went to America, which he had often visited since 1929; he settled in New York the following year and took American citizenship in 1946. He was present at a 90th birthday concert held in his honour in New York Town Hall..." & & "Grechaninov’s works cover many different genres. His style is mainly decadent, influenced more by Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov and Ippolitov-Ivanov than Musorgsky. Some of his early songs have won popularity for their lyrical expressive power..." Inna Barsova and Gerald Abraham in Grove online& & Koshetz (1894-1965), a noted Ukrainian-born American soprano, was the daughter of Pavel Koshitz, a leading tenor at the Bol'shoy. She made her début as Tatyana in Yevgeny Onegin with the Zimin Private Opera company in 1913, leaving Russia in 1920 to join the Chicago Opera Association. She spent the best part of the later 1920s in France, performing at the Opéra in 1925 and at the Trocadéro in 1927 in the first Paris production of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sadko. "Her few recordings, prized by collectors, show a clear, steady voice excitingly combined with an imaginative, emotionally charged style." J.B. Steane in Grove online& & Gretchaninov speaks of concertizing with Koshetz in his memoirs: "My first concert with Nina Koshetz took place in Carnegie Hall on January 17, 1929. Soixante-Douze Planches is a beautiful collection of 72 collotype reproductions of Clara's drawings, gouaches, and pen sketches of Isadora. These illustrations show the full range of attitudes and expressions of Duncan, done by Clara who knew Duncan personally. The lovely color plates, which are interspersed among the black and white in this collection, are among the most collected of Duncan illustrations. An eight page preface by Georges Denis discusses the phenomenon of Isadora in her time, as well as the artist Jose Clara, who had watched Isadora dance since 1913. The preface also forms a tribute to Isadora, who died in 1927. The collotypes were printed at Societe de Gravure et d'Impression d'Art and the text at l'Imprimerie Ducros & Colas, Paris. A Smashing Photo-Play Co-Starring Lawrence Criner and Kathryn Boyd, Original Lafayette Players. Steve Reynolds, "Peg" [,] Alfred Norcom, United States Marshal, L.B. Tatums and The Entire City Of Tatums, Okla. & The other three pages have many photographs from the film, tips on promoting the film, a letter from R.E. Norman to the cinema owner, and an article on making the picture in Tatums, Oklahoma which was founded by a Kentucky born "adventuresome colored man" who founded the town over thirty years before when Oklahoma was the Indian Territory. The article also speaks of John Crisp who brought in three producing oil wells and the troubles he had with crooked drilling contractors, which was the basis for the movie., , "He (Norman) soon went into business for himself and by 1920 had made a number of short films as a traveling film producer. After 1920 Norman established himself and his company in Jacksonville, Florida, and began producing all black films. He made several of these "race" films in the 1920's and distributed them through the 1930's. Norman continued to be involved with the motion picture industry in one capacity or another until the mid 1950's. Jeanne Robert Foster was an American poet, model and literary editor of the American Review of Reviews, a post given to her by Ford. In 1916 she began to publish her own verse and also to travel in Europe. She met and became friends with such important figures of modernism as Ezra Pound, and William Butler Yeats. She also had a relationship with the author and occultist Aleister Crowley. Her relationship with Ford was close, although he stated in a letter to a friend in 1926 that they were not lovers, however a letter for Christmas 1926 reads very much like a love letter. The books are very good, the dust jackets are also very good with a tiny bit of fraying at head of spine panels, minor chipping at head of last title. First Shakespeare Head edition of the translation of Plutarch that influenced Shakespeare's plays. One of a limited edition of 100 numbered sets on handmade paper in the deluxe binding, signed by the illustrator on the limitation leaf. This important translation of Plutarch by the Elizabethan courtier Sir Thomas North was the version that Shakespeare himself read. Though North's translation originally appeared in 1579, Shakespeare may have become familiar with it when the publisher Richard Field reprinted it in 1594, at exactly the same time that he was printing Shakespeare's Lucrece. "North's translation influenced profoundly not only the larger narrative structures of Shakespeare's Roman plays but innumerable local shapings of their language; though criticism now more strongly emphasizes Shakespeare's activity, creativity, and competitiveness as a reader of North than his passive indebtedness, the importance of this single work is unargued" (ODNB). This edition adheres as closely as possible to the first edition, following its use of spelling, capitalisation, and punctuation. The headpieces, designed by Thomas Lowinsky, were "taken as far as possible from authentic originals" and "woodcut medallions which appeared in the first edition of North's book" (preface). Three different bindings were used for this edition, the present being the most luxurious. A handsome set.

His prose considered by many to be “incomparable... [his] achievement in narrative prose is only less signal than Shakespeare's in dramatic verse.       Documents Frobenius' 9th ethnological expedition (1928-30) that carried out research in Southern Africa, chiefly on the remarkable Upper Paleolithic and ancient rock art of the San people (Kung-Sho-Khwe) of the Kalahari Desert and Basin. Offered is the rare first edition, complete as issued in 2 volumes in the publisher's decorated cloth boards, illustrated with 144 superb full-page collotype plates, 30 hand colored, with many pictograms (rock and cave paintings) and petroglyphs (rock engravings) of great interest. The plates from drawings, watercolors and photographs made on site are exceptional. In the later edition, they aren't nearly as fine quality. NOTABILITY: Beyond their archaeological, anthropological, ethnological, historical and iconographic significance, the rock art works are of artistic interest, many of great beauty and subtle power, and a remarkable resource for design artists and body art patterns. Leo Frobenius was among the first European scholars to recognize the historicity of African cultures: most of his adult life was devoted to revealing it. Associated with the diffusionist school of cultural studies, he is credited with originating the concepts of Paideuma (the soul of culture) and Kulturkreise (cultural circle). The expedition traveled to Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia. In contrast with the nineteenth-century ideal of a description of the phenomena from which every reference to their observation would be eliminated, we have the much wider and truer prospect of an account of the phenomena in which due regard is paid to the conditions under which they can actually be observed - thereby securing the full objectivity of the description&#148; (DSB).<br/><br/>& & The concept of complementarity started to develop in Bohr&#146;s mind during discussions with Heisenberg in Copenhagen early in 1927, when Heisenberg was preparing for publication his famous paper on the uncertainty principle. In fact, the published version of Heisenberg&#146;s paper contains a note added in proof which mentions &#145;recent investigations by Bohr [that] have led to points of view that permit an essential deepening and refinement of the analysis of the quantum mechanical relationship attempted in this work&#146;. <br/><br/>& & &#147;Bohr presented his ideas on complementarity for the first time at an international congress of physics in Como in the fall of 1927, commemorating the centenary of Volta&#146;s death. On this occasion, he stressed that in the quantum world, contrary to the classical world, an observation of a system can never be made without disturbing the system. But how can we then know the state of the system? The quantum postulate would seem to imply that the classical distinction between the observer and the observed was no longer tenable. How then would it be possible to obtain objective knowledge? Bohr&#146;s reflections on these and related questions led him to introduce the notion of complementarity as denoting the use of complementary but mutually exclusive viewpoints in the description of nature. Two years later, he defined the complementarity principle as &#145;a new mode of description... in the sense that any given application of classical concepts precludes the simultaneous use of other classical concepts which in a different connection are equally necessary for the elucidation of phenomena&#146;... The wave description and the particle description are complementary and thus in conflict. But Bohr argued that the physicist is still able to account unambiguously for his experiments, for it is he who chooses what to measure and thereby destroys the possibility of the realization of the conflicting aspect... <br/><br/>& & &#147;The complementarity principle became the cornerstone of what was later referred to as the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics. Pauli even stated that quantum mechanics might be called &#145;complementarity theory&#146;, in an analogy with &#145;relativity theory&#146;. Obituary clippings to both sides of the free endpaper with associated browning, rather spotted early and late but an excellent copy in the little tanned dust jacket. First edition, first impression of one of Byron&#39;s earliest titles. With the author&#39;s signed presentation inscription to the title page dated the year before he died. Byron presentations are very uncommon.

        Arms and the Covenant

      This is the precursor to Churchill's great war speeches, a premium example of the British first edition, only printing, in the pale blue first state dust jacket.  The book contains a collection of speeches spanning the years 1928 to 1938 criticizing British foreign policy and warning prophetically of the coming danger. The world remembers the resolute war leader to whom the British turned, but it is easy to forget the years leading up to the war which Churchill spent persistent, eloquent, and largely unheeded. Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods called this edition "probably the most crucial volume of speeches that he ever published". As testimony to the book's importance, a copy of the U.S. edition lay on "President Roosevelt's bedside table, with key passages, including an analysis of the president's peace initiative, underscored." (William Manchester's The Last Lion, Volume II, p.305). Only 5,000 copies of this first and only British impression were printed, of which only 3,381 were sold with this first state dust jacket.  Here is a near-fine copy in a near-fine dust jacket.  The dust jacket is entirely complete - absolutely no losses and  unclipped, with the original front flap price intact.  Moreover, the dust jacket shows almost no wrinkling or wear and does not suffer any of the spotting to which this edition proved prone.  The sole jacket flaw of note is some toning, particularly to the spine.  The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.  The volume beneath is likewise near-fine.   The blue cloth binding is square, clean, and tight, retaining perfect unfaded color, bright spine gilt, and flawed only by two tiny corner bumps.  The contents remain notably crisp with absolutely no spotting or previous ownership marks.  Typical transfer browning to the half title corresponds with the dust jacket flap and confirms what the excellent binding already tells us - that this copy has always been jacketed.  Though unspotted, the fore and bottom edges are age-toned.  The blue-stained top edge retains uniform, if slightly dulled, color.  Bibliographic reference: Cohen A107.1, Woods/ICS A44(a), Langworth p.191
