This appears to be Gertzman, Descriptive Bibliography of LCL 1.11 with the Warren watermark. This copy belonged to S. Foster Damon, poet, and then a young teacher at Brown. Pages 149/150 have been removed and replaced with typescript corrected in three places in pencil. The original binding in black has been replaced by one by Dragonfly with red leather spine, and Lawrencian orange patterned paper covered boards; VG. OB471.

        The Novels & Selected Writings of Daniel Defoe 14 Volumes Large Paper Edition

      Large Paper Edition All fourteen volumes of this complete set are in near fine condition in 1/4 beige buckram and light brown paper covered boards with gilt stamped leather spine labels. All are small quartos measuring 9 1/4" by 6" with rough cut pages to the text blocks many of which are un-opened. The only condition issue is there has been a reaction that occurred between the glue used to paste the leather labels to the cloth spines causing a narrow, brown stain around each label. Also, the gilt text on the leather label for volume V is partially obscured due to rubbing and abrasion. One of only 530 copies printed by the Shakespeare Head Press of which 500 were for sale. This set carries the number 449 within each volume. Many of the volumes contain a fold-out frontispiece map which relates to the title of each volume. The set includes: Moll Flanders in two volumes; Colonel Jack and John Gow in two volumes; The Life Adventures and Pyracies of the famous Captain Singleton; Memoirs of a Cavalier in one volume; Robinson Crusoe in three volumes; A Journal of the Plague Year in one volume; The Fortunate Mistress in two volumes; and, Shortest Way with the Dissenters and English Commerce each in their own volumes. A very handsome, clean, tight and highly collectible set with no prior owner's markings, notations or book plates. Our code number = TB26346

Issued as part of "The Uniform Edition of the Plays of J. M. Barrie." First publication of the play, first performed in 1904. Peter Pan first appeared in Barrie's THE LITTLE WHITE BIRD (1902) and the part concerning Peter later became PETER PAN IN KENSINGTON GARDENS (1906). Barrie later wrote a prose version of the play, PETER AND WENDY (1911). There is no 1904 Scribner edition of PETER PAN, it is a ghost.       Simon and Schuster New York: Simon and Schuster. (1928). First. First edition. Boards a bit bowed, spine lettering rubbed and faded, a sound, about very good copy lacking the dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author to director and actor Erich von Stroheim with von Stroheim's bookplate: "To my very good friend 'Von'. Piously, J.P. McEvoy. Jan. 29 - '29 [with a sketch of a person]." The first of McEvoy's novels to feature Dixie Dugan, a Brooklyn-born showgirl who conquers Broadway and Hollywood. Dixie Dugan, based on the life and appearance of Louise Brooks, was the central character in several films including the Alfred Santell-directed Show Girl (1928) with Alice White and Donald Reed; Mervyn Leroy's 1930 Show Girl in Hollywood with White and Jack Mulhall; Le Masque d'Hollywood (1931) directed by Clarence Badger and John Daumery; and Dixie Dugan (1943) directed by Otto Brower. McEvoy is also known for his plays and novels which were adapted into films for W.C. Fields including It's the Old Army Game (1926), The Potters (1927), The Old Fashioned Way (1934), You're Telling Me! (1934), and It's a Gift (1934). Von Stroheim began his career as an actor (invariably playing Teutonic terrors and billed as "The Man You Love to Hate"), then directed several key silent films (Greed, Foolish Wives, etc.) before his legendary extravagance forced him to return to acting in the sound era, with notable roles in Grand Illusion, Sunset Boulevard, and several other films. A wonderful association. .

Avec Dr. Price-Mars' complemet." Price-Mars is generally considered to have been Haiti's foremost thinker of the 20th Century. This is perhaps his most influential work, an indictment of the Haitian elite for their Francophile inclinations, and a defense of the African roots of Haiti as it was expressed in that country's indigenous culture. .

        [Original Dust Jacket Art]: Spider Boy

      Alfred A. Knopf [New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1928]. First. Original tempura painted art for the dust jacket of Carl Van Vechten's novel Spider Boy. 6.5" x 7.5". Unsigned (as is the finished dust jacket). Matted and framed. Fine. Hollywood star waves to the adoring multitudes as her entourage looks on, and a flash camera goes off in the left foreground. The painted lettering was changed to an entirely different font for the finished jacket, and the rest of the image shows minor variations, mostly in color. A very nearly final draft, and the only extant painting of the jacket of which we are aware. An iconic and wonderfully evocative image of the Jazz Age. The satiric novel featured a mildly successful playwright, Ambrose Deacon, who is lured to Hollywood where he is pressed into service as a screenwriter for an egotistical superstar. Ambrose has no clue about film but rapidly discovers that no one in Hollywood cares, as long as he lends his modest prestige to the film colony's pretensions. With a second printing of the novel, very good in very good dustwrapper. .

(34.9 x 27.3 cm) Gelatin silver print, printed later of the iconic image of the author photographed by Bernice Abbott, numbered & signed by her on the mount, & with her studio stamp on the verso which states: "Photograph / printed for / limited edition of / Bernice Abbott American Photographer / Bernice Abbott / Abbott, Maine 04406". Framed & glazed in a superb stained brown mahogany frame. Reference: O'Neal, Berenice Abbott: American Photographer, p. 44; Photo Poche Press, Berenice Abbott, pl. 23; Szarkowski, Looking at Photographs: 100 Pictures from the Collection of the Museum of Modern Art, p. 98. A scarce portrait of Joyce, who was photographed in the 1920's by Abbott in Paris. Abbott had been Man Ray's photo assistant from 1923-25, and opened her own portrait studio in 1926, at 44 Rue du Bac. She returned to New York in 1929. Abbott subsequently made a few new prints in the late 1950's before this final printing in the 1980's. A beautiful fine image. "One of most moving of her portraits is one reproduced here of James Joyce. The grey, strangely lifeless, enveloping light finds its way everywhere, describing without emphasis or favor the writer's stickpin, his hands, his right ear, his fine beaver hat, the deep tiredness of his elegant slouch. The note on verso of the envelope (3 lines in E's hand) is unequivocally added after E. had closed the envelope. (Herman Müntz was Einstein's collaborator - helping with the mathematical calculations in the first crucial part of the "Fernparallelismus"- period).. An unpublished and unrecorded letter of seminal importance to the understanding of Einstein's path towards his great final theory, perhaps the most ambitious and complex achievement of the 20th century, namely the all-embracing formula that would unite all forces of nature, showing them as merely different manifestations of a single, universal force and as such disclosing the secret laws of nature - the great UNIFIED FIELD THEORY (UFT), marrying the electromagnetic and gravitational fields. Written on December 10th 1928, thus predating the submission of Einstein's "Zur einheitlichen feldtheorie" by a month, the letter that we have in front of us represents one of the final steps towards the UTF, presenting us with the essential parts of Einstein's solution hereto. In the present letter Einstein draws a conclusion that comes to be fundamental for his groundbreaking work, namely that the electromagnetic equations, in the unification search, necessarily have to take on a specific mathematical structure d/dx ( )=0. EVEN MORE INTERESTINGLY, HE GIVES TO THIS "SOLUTION" A MORE EXPLICIT FORMULATION - on the verso of the envelope! - "Unterdessen habe ich selbst gesehen, dass die elektrom.(echanische) Gl.(eichungen) die Form d/dx ( )=0 annehmen müssen, indem die Zusatzglieder wegen den andern Feldgleichungen verschwinden" [i.e.: Meanwhile I have seen for myself that the electromechanical equations must take on the form d/dx ( )=0, in which the additional terms disappear because of the other field equations]. - Clearly written after the letter had been written, packed, and sealed, leaving us with a unique piece of scientific research that brings us right into the creative mind of Einstein.Apart from providing us with a unique insight into Einstein's method of working, into the process of how the greatest physicist of the 20th century worked during one of the most exciting and hectic periods of his scientific life, giving us a magnificent view of the aspects of his working progress, the letter actually directly displays in which way Einstein considered how the vectors and tensors in parts of the curved space must be related in order to find equations that could incorporate both types of fields. In order to fully understand the importance of the letter, the following must be taken into consideration: BACKGROUND. In an article of February 3rd, 1929 (explaining his new discoveries - E 1929 c) Einstein states that the Theory of Relativity has "in the last six months entered its third stage of development", referring to this intensive period, in which he struggled with uniting the two ontological types, the electromagnetic and the gravitational field under a common concept - the new type of geometry which he called "Fernparallelismus" (Teleparallelisme, Distant parallelisme, Absolute parallelisme), a structure of the continuum which lies between Riemannian and Euclidean geometry.In 1928 Einstein suffered a temporary physical collapse due to an enlargement of the heart and he had to stay in bed for four months and keep a salt-free diet. He fully recuperated but remained weakened for a year. At the end of May, 1928 he wrote to his friend Zagger: "In the tranquility of my sickness I have laid a wonderful egg in the area of general relativity. Whether the bird that will hatch from it will be vital and long-lived only the Gods know". - The egg that was hatched was Einstein's perhaps most important paper on UFT, "Zur einheitlichen Feldtheorie" (E 1929 b - Weil: 165 with an asterisk and mentioned in PMM 416); at least it was the result of these 6 months of hard work. The paper was published in January, 1929 and it was submitted one month after the present Einstein-letter, on Jan. 10, 1929 - as such the letter that we have in front of us represents one of the final steps to the UTF of "Zur einheitlichen feldtheorie", a step which in essence constitutes Einstein's insistence on using partial differential equations as the field-equations from which Maxwell's equations could be derived."Auf alle Fälle sind wir auf dem richtigen Wege mit der Fernparallelismus" Eisntein states at the end of the letter - meaning "IN ANY CASE, We [i.e. Einstein himself and Müntz] ARE ON THE RIGHT PATH WITH THE THEORY OF DISTANT PARELLELISM."That which Einstein himself thought to have accomplished during this hectic period, which culminated with the January-paper of 1929, can best be understood from his own statements in an interview he gave to the newspaper "Daily Chronicle" on January 26th: "Now, but only now, we know that the force which moves electrons in their ellipses about the nuclei of atoms is the same force which moves our earth in its annual course about the sun, and it is the same force which brings to us the rays of light and heat which make life possible upon our planet."Another formal UNIQUE DIMENSION to the letter is the fact that tells us how fast, within hours, or a day at most, Einstein was able to sharpen an essential approach to a complex problem and making a quick turn-around - this is uniquely displayed by the definite standpoint taken in the three lines on verso of the envelope, written after he had closed the envelope - A REMARKABLE MANIFESTATION OF CREATIVITY.At the end of 1928 there were rumors circulating world-wide that Einstein would come up with a new derivation of the field equations uniting the two known forces. "The craze apparently had begun with an article in the New York Times of November 4, 1928 under the title "Einstein on Verge of a Great Discovery;..." The author of this article, Paul D. Miller, gave an account of how he had succeeded in visiting Einstein in his Berlin home. It is a striking example of grooming the myth of this mysteriously creative genius. The sick Einstein supposedly "sat on a sunny beach and appeased his desire to work by playing his violin to the waves", but then came up with a new theory that "will startle the world more than relativity did"." (Sauer 2006).FERNPARALLELISMUS. The "distant-parallelism"- approach to UFT, initiated in Einstein's two papers of July 1928 (E 1928 a and 1928 b), and incorporating the period from 1928 to spring 1931, was an important turning-point for Einstein, as he already had the UFT in mind just after he had released his General Theory of Relativity (GR). In his own words "After 12 years of disappointments in investigation, I now found a metric structure of the Continuum, which lay between Riemannian and Euclidean, and which, when elaborated would lead to a real unified field theory"(own transl. from German in 1929 a - Stodola Festschrift). He hereby introduced a "new structure of space" (Eine neue Raumstruktur). This fundamental new geometry is a geometry which is somewhat different from the Riemann-geometry of GF, as it is a geometry with Riemann metric and vanishing curvature together with non-vanishing torsion ("Stromdichten" in the letter ?). This new geometrical conception allowed for vectors in different parts of curved space to be related, and from here sprang new forms of tensors. In this way it was also possible to come up with equations that avoided the Planck-constant representing quanta.THE THIRD AND LAST STAGE OF RELATIVITY. It is evident from Einstein's own writing and statements from this period, during which he worked on "Fernparallelismus" (E 1929 a (Stodola-Festschrift and E 1929 c) that he considered his unification program an essential part of the Theory of Relativity. He declared that now the theory "has entered its third stage". The first stage, the Special Theory of Relativity (SR) was also reached as a result of a unification process, as he here unified the concepts of "space" and "time" into the space-time continuum of 4 dimensions, having its origin principally in Maxwell's unification of electricity and magnetism. The second stage in Relativity was realized in his General Theory of Relativity (GR) as he here united the key concepts of "Inertial mass" and "Gravitational mass" and "at the same time gravitation and inertia were fused into an essential identity", the identity of inertial mass and energy (E-mc2). THE THIRD STAGE was Einstein's Unitary-field program, which is, in its substance, only a consequence of "the unitary tendency which dominates the whole development of the theory" (E, 1929 c.). During the last 40 years of his life he was obsessed by this "unitary tendency" in his search "of finding the field equations for the total Field" (Autobiographical Notes p. 89). The letter discloses an aspect of this "obsession" in a moment of perhaps E's most important period of his Unification program.EINSTEIN'S FRAME OF MIND AROUND DECEMBER 10, 1928. As the offered letter is dated December 10th, 1928 and Einstein's important review-paper "Über den gegenwärtigen Stand der Feld-Theorie" (1929 a) was submitted the VERY SAME DATE to the editor of the "Festschrift", it may not be ill-timed to refer to the statements in this paper in order to shed some light on the philosophical drive or mood, in which Einstein found himself when writing the letter of December 10th. He states that a physical theory, if possible must include "all phenomena and their connections" (möglichst alle Erscheinungen und deren Zusammenhänge zu umfassen (Vollständigkeit)) and "to help us not only to understand HOW nature is and how her transactions are carried through, but also to reach as far as possible the perhaps utopian and seemingly arrogant aim of knowing why Nature is THUS AND NOT OTHERWISE" and indirectly that the phenomena which should be connected, having "logische Einheitlichkeit", in the UFT, will take on such a structure (UFT-field equations) "that even God Himself could not have arranged those connections in any other way than that which factually exists, any more that it would be in His power to make the number 4 into a prime number".Gerold Holton in his book "Thematic Origins of Scientific Thought. Kepler to Einstein" 1973, points to the philosophical kinship of Einstein's position with that of Johannes Kepler in his "Mysterium Cosmographicum", where he announced that he wanted to find out concerning the number, positions, and motions of the planets, "why they are as they are, and not otherwise", and who wrote to Herwart in April 1559, that with regard to numbers and quantity, "our knowledge is of the same kind of God's, at least insofar as we can understand something of it in this mortal life."Such was Einstein's philosophical mood and his scientific aim at the time when this letter was written and thus it contributes in its own unique way to shedding the veil of how this genius struggled with his ultimate aim.As we now know, Einstein's attempts at creating a UFT were not successful. Einstein rejected Quantum mechanics (discontinuity/ discreteness versus continuity of fields) and he only knew two forces, the electromagnetic and the gravitational. There are other forces in nature, the weak and strong nuclear forces, and new atomic particles, not known at the time, have been discovered. A truly unified theory would explain all 4 forces. This ambitious challenge has not yet been met. "What is being developed is a unified theory of the strong, weak, and electromagnetic forces, everything except gravity. Nevertheless Einstein's struggle is our struggle today. It is the search for a final theory."(Steven Weinberg in "Dreams of a Final Theory" 1992). In Abraham Pais' words "Einstein is a typical Old Testament figure, with the Jehovah-type attitude that there is a law and one must find it." HERMAN MÜNTZ (1884 Poland - 1956 Sweden). Müntz was Einstein's scientific collaborator in the years 1927-29 (or 1930), helping Einstein with the extensive calculations which flowed from his different approaches to UFT.Müntz was educated in mathematics at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-University in Berlin, graduating in 1906. He wrote a doctorial dissertation on partial differential equations and on the Plateau Problem. He is best known for the "Müntz-approximation theorem", but also published on projective geometry and approximation theory. In Germany he took up different teaching positions. In 1921 he moved to Göttingen and in 1924 to Berlin. In this period he was unsuccessfully trying to get an academic position, hampered, because he had not habilitated. In 1929 he took up a professional position at Leningrad State University, and his collaboration with Einstein ended. In 1937 Müntz, who was a German citizen, was expelled from the USSR and went to Sweden, where he supported himself by teaching. He obtained Swedish citizenship in 1953."Their extensive correspondance (Einstein and Müntz in the Einstein-Archive) about teleparallelism appears to have been triggered by a letter (July 1928) from Müntz in which he pointed out that the field equations in first appoximation are fully integrable. In the sequel, Müntz was concerned with the task of computing the special case of spatial spherical symmetry. The correspondence shows that Einstein kept Müntz informed about the considerations regarding the proper field equations, asking him about explicit calculations for each new version of them. These calculations are acknowledged in (2 papers by Einstein)" (Sauer 2006).The first time Müntz is mentioned in print is in Einstein's main paper on UFT (E 1929 b, p. 8):"Es ist mir eine angenehme Pflicht, Hrn. Dr. H. Müntz für die mühsame strenge Berechnung des zentrasymmetrischen Problems auf Grund des Hamiltonischen Prinzips zu danken; durch die Ergebnisse jener Untersuchung wurde mir die Auffindung des hier beschrittenen Weg nahegebracht". The next time is in the paper (E 1929 a - Stodola Festschrift, p. 32), the paper which was submitted to the "Festschrift" THE SAME DAY AS THE OFFERED PAPER IS DATED:"Es zeight sich, dass sich bei der Wahl der Konstanten B= -A (and) C= 0 Feldgleichungen ergeben, welche mit den bekannten Gesetzen des Gravitationsfeldes und des elektromagnetischen Feldes in erster Nährung übereinstimmen. Eine Rechnung, welche ich zusammen mit Herrn Müntz ausführte, zeigte sogar dass das Feld eines Massenpunktes ohne elektrische Ladung nach der hier entwickelten Theorie sich gleich ergibt wie gemäss der ursprünglischen allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie." These boards do not have the extensive fading which is so common with the House At Pooh corner books due to the light salmon pink cloth used. These are a highly desirable and collectable set of boards.____The original decorated pink endpapers to the front and back show Christopher Robin leading all the characters of the Pooh books through 100 Aker Wood, all in silhouette. The paper is slightly browned, but is free of any writing or inscription which is rare for these books.____There are 178 numbered pages, all top edge gilt, with only very light and very occasional foxing. All pages are tightly bound in and we are unable to detect any cracks to the internal hinges. Barber / New York 1928". An illustration to Barber's Wild Fowl Decoys (plate 60). Fine condition. Provenance: From the private collection of Eugene V. Connett III. Siegel 85 . A fine, large rendering, very much reduced in the Derrydale Press and Winward House editions of Barber's classic book. It shows "a Stevens Widgeon...In this decoy the painting is original and still shows the work of a 'graining comb' on the back". The watercolor execution is meticulous. Inscribed verso: "Amer. Widgeon (Baldpate) / No detailed history - just used in Currituck Sound (North Carolina) / the Currituck Club. / Reproduced through the Courtesy of H.F. Stone Esq. of New York, 1928. / Note-- Undoubtedly a machine made decoy of the Eighties - a product of some early northern factory (possibly a Stevens - Weedsport) / Joel."         Four Lectures on Wave Mechanics.Inscribed by Schrödinger to George Paget Thomson. London and Glasgow: Blackie & Son Limited, 1928. First edition, first printing.

      Exceptional presentation copy; early Schrödinger inscriptions are highly rare and the association between his and G.P. Thomson's work can hardly be overstated. This inscription by Schrödinger to Thomson is dated November 1928 - in 1926 Schrödinger created wave mechanics and in 1927 Thomson gave experimental proof of Schrödinger's theory. Schrödinger received the 1933 Nobel Prize for his work and in 1937 Thomson was awarded Nobel Prize for his experiment. Schrödinger affectionately writes 'To G.P.T. from whom I now learn'. We know of just one other presentation copy of Schrödinger's lectures: Howell catalogue from 1981 (priced at $225) - not inscribed but with printed card and the signature of P.W. Bridgman.. Through a series of wars with local tribes with extensive land holdings, most notably the Akan and Asanti (Ashanti), the colony enlarged its borders during the 1860s and 70s. The Gold Coast Colony became Ghana when it became independent in 1957. A supplement to Gardiner's compilation was published in 1929. This is a Good + Copy of this book in Publisher's original light tan coloured cloth with black title lettering to spine which has now rather worn and faded over time.There is a little spotting to the spine.No Dust-Jacket.This copy has been SIGNED by the Author Christopher Isherwood on the Title Page without dedication.The book has a firm binding with NO hinge weakness and there is NO leaning or rolling to spine.Certainly one for the collector as SIGNED Isherwood titles are exceedingly rare.The Author's First novel features a theme which was to reoccur frequently in his later work - the destruction of a son by a very evil parent.It was set in the well-to-do London of the 1920s,Philip and Joan fight to throw off the oppressive power of their mother,using whatever means necessary.An Anglo-American novelist and playwright,best known for his stories about Berlin in the early 1930s.Isherwood's novels were based largely on his own life. Large 4to, vellum backed blue cloth, small snag at base of spine and slight bit of foxing else fine. LIMITED TO 1000 LARGE PAPER NUMBERED COPIES SIGNED BY DULAC. Old French fairy tales by Perrault, D'Aulnoy and Count Hamilton are illustrated by Dulac with 12 beautiful color plates. Laid in is an interesting ONE PAGE HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM DULAC written to the editor of the Daily Graphic. Dulac was obviously upset that the public's right to hear all music was being modified. His letter expresses his outrage and certainly is a window into his personality: " I wonder sometimes what the world would do without the help of the men "who know what the public want"! ... their concern for the intellectual aesthetic welfare of others is paramount, their hardiness can only be compared to that of the methusalesque tortoise, their only weakness is that they do not always know "what the public what" - and which I understand, is taken into account in Mr. de Lara's scheme - is to be trated like a lot of undeveloped children, and be administered music like a medicine in graduated doses. Discussions of the relative merits of Parsifal and Maritana are futile, and it is precisely in avoiding these absurd restrictions of the use of certain types of music to certain classes of people, that Mr. de Lara's scheme is valuable. Maritana was not composed for the "uneducated" nor Parsifal for the "highbrows." What the public wants is the opportunity for the largest possible number to hear the largest possible number of operas. All premature expressions of opinion as to what should or should not be given them is preposterous. Yours faithfully Edmund Dulac."

Er netop kommet fra en kort fjell=" hvilket fortsætter på forsiden: "tur og må avsted på reise./ Mange hilsener (?)ønsker/ Fridtjof Nansen.". Fru Julie Mohn (d. 1928) var gift med Henrik Mohn (1835-1916), som var en af Nansens nærmeste venner. Han regnes for grundlæggeren af meteorologi og fysisk oceanografi i Norge og blev i 1866 Meteorologisk Instituts første direktør. I 1884 skrev Mohn en artikel om transpolar strøm over det arktiske hav, og denne artikel dannede inspirationen for Nansen til at realisere færden med Fram ti år senere.
