Autograph musical manuscript of Putyi tvoi, Gospodi, skaji mne [Thy Ways, O Lord, Tell Me], a vocal work for tenor solo, mixed chorus and piano. In score

10 pp. In E, 2/2 time, marked "Lento" at head. Folio (358 x 265 mm.). Unbound. Notated in ink on 18-stave Russian music manuscript paper. With numerous autograph corrections and amendations including pencil markings of an editorial nature. The printer's copy, presumably used in preparation of the published edition. With pencilled annotation to upper left corner of title indicating receipt of the manuscript (presumably by the publisher) on October 13, 1928. Slightly worn and soiled. . We have not located any record of the present work in Slonimsky. "In two fields of Russian music Grechaninov has a special place: children’s music and liturgical works. Even his first liturgy op.13 is worth attention; and in the op.19 choruses he used a new style, favoured by Katal sky and others, recognizable by its modal harmonization of old Russian melodies. This initially aroused strong opposition from conservative church musicians. In the popular second liturgy Grechaninov solved the problem of the Credo by giving the text to a solo alto, who declaims it rhythmically while the choir sings the word ‘Veruyu’ (‘I believe’) in simple harmony. Grechaninov’s later use of instruments in para-liturgical works, his composition of a Roman Catholic Mass and motets (with organ), and his writing of a Missa oecumenica – a Latin mass for solo voices, chorus, organ and orchestra on Orthodox, Gregorian and Hebrew liturgical melodies – all testify to his liberal religious outlook."         A collection of notebooks, offprints, and books from the library of Max Newman

, 1928–59. 1928–59. Together, 29 items: 3 printed books, one manuscript notebook, one autograph album, and 24 offprints. Very light toning and spotting, extremities slightly bumped and occasionally a little worn, a few light stains, some minor nicks and chips to margins. Minor rust stains to wrappers and gutters of offprints. Generally a good state of preservation. Max Newman (1897–1984) was one of the most significant British mathematicians of his generation and a leading pioneer in modern computer science. After early pioneering work on combinatory (or geometric) topology, logic and Boolean algebras, he was elected FRS in 1939. During the Second World War, in 1942, he joined the government code and cypher school at Bletchley Park. There he realised that some of the methods used by the Bletchley codebreakers would be better done with the help of rapid, special-purpose electronic machinery employing paper tape and photoelectric cells; he and Alan Turing proposed the logical requirements for such machinery. These requirements formed the basis of practical machines, culminating with the Colossus, the world's first large-scale electronic computer. The section at Bletchley that used the machinery was headed by Newman and was called the Newmanry. From 1945 to 1964 Newman was the Fielden professor of mathematics at Manchester University, where he established the Royal Society Computing Machine Laboratory, which produced the first working stored program electronic computer in 1948. This collection of papers from his family includes an autograph album owned by his son William, who evidently took the opportunity of various conferences and academic gatherings to garner the signatures of some of the most important scientists of the mid-century, including that of Alan Turing. Newman remained close to Turing throughout his career. It was he who wrote the Royal Society's Memoir, and his wife, Lyn Irvine, who supplied the preface to Sara Turing's biography of her tragic son. The collection also includes one of Newman's own early notebooks, showing his intellectual concerns in the 1920s, and a number of offprints, including three of his own articles and a presentation copy. The collection comprises: NOTEBOOKS a. Autograph album. Oblong duodecimo, 67 pages (white, pink, and blue), original black leather-grain boards, 'Autographs' to front board gilt, edges purple. "Begun 14 July 1951" in William Newman's childish hand on the front pastedown. About 100 autographs by various famous mathematicians and scientists, including Alan Turing, Hassler Whitney, Patrick Blackett, Stan Frankel, Conel Hugh O'Donel Alexander, John Cockcroft. Also Carl L. Siegel and Jan A. Rajchman. Spine gently cocked, spine ends and edges of boards slightly rubbed, very minor wear to top edge of front board. b. Max Newman's Math Diary. Duodecimo, green cloth wrappers, "Math Diary" handwritten on front wrapper. 176 pages, mostly completed in ink and pencil. August 1924–December 1932 as far as dated entries are concerned. Edges speckled green. Extremities slightly rubbed, a couple of small white marks (scuff marks?) to front wrapper. Fowler's problem, (ca p. 94); Reading, summer 28 (p. 83), and notes on theorems, equations, etc. PRINTED BOOKS A. HARTREE, D. R. Calculating Machines: Recent & Prospective Developments and their impact on Mathematical Physics. Inaugural Lecture by the author. (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1947.) Small quarto. Original printed wrappers, 2 plates. With Newman's ownership inscription to half-title. Wrappers toned and partially loose along spine, spine ends a little chipped, small dark stain to lower corner of front wrapper. An excellent copy. B. SHANNON, Claude E., & Warren Weaver. The Mathematical Theory and of Communication. (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1949). Original dark red cloth, titles to spine in silver. Spine a little faded, spine ends and corners lightly rubbed and bumped, top edge of rear board with small light marks. An excellent copy. C. TURING, Sara. Alan M. Turing. (Cambridge: W. Heffer & Sons, 1959). Original pale green boards, titles to spine and front board in green. Spine gently cocked, small light dampstain to front board, spine and bottom of front board lightly toned, top and bottom edges of rear board very lightly bumped. An excellent copy. First edition of this uncommon biography, or memorial volume, of the great computer science pioneer, written by his mother; apparently issued in an edition of as little as 500 copies. Mrs Turing maintains that her son's death was an accident, the result of careless handling of chemicals when preparing "non-poisonous weed-killer, and sink-cleaner" at home. Despite this probably emotionally necessary special pleading, this is an interesting work which strives to establish Turing's credentials without reference to his then still-classified war work. Newman is referenced several times in the text; the preface is by his wife, Lyn Irvine. OFFPRINTS i. BAER, Reinhold, & Friedrich Levi. "Freie Produkte und ihre Untergruppen." From Compositio Mathematica Volume 3 (1936). Offprint, wire-stitched, printed light blue wrappers. Extremities of wrappers lightly toned, minor chip to lower corner of rear wrapper. ii. BOHR, Niels. "On the Quantum Theory of Line-Spectra. Part I" (Copenhagen: Bianco Lunos Bogtrykkeri, 1918). Original printed wrappers. With Newman's signature to front wrapper.         Autograph working manuscript in condensed score of the Divagazioni sopra un'Allemanda di John Bull per Orch. [7 variazioni su un'Allemanda di John Bull], signed.

      - An Italian composer, conductor and critic, Guerrini studied with both Torchi and Busoni at the Bologna Liceo Musicale, going on to direct the Florence Conservatory (1928–47), the Bologna Conservatory (1947–9), and the Conservatorio di S Cecilia (1950–60)."His earlier music combines high seriousness, at times somewhat academic, with luxuriant chromatic harmony reminiscent of Bax or, more significantly, Alfano. The textures and orchestration sometimes suggest Strauss, as does Guerrini’s interest, around 1920, in the symphonic poem; and there are indications, too, of Ravel's influence. The most substantial and imaginative of his early works is his second published work in the genre, L’ultimo viaggio d’Odisseo, which shows his harmony and orchestration at their most evocative. Also notable, in this early period, are the chamber compositions: the Violin Sonata is typical, combining succulent chromaticism with reiterative thematic developments. In time Guerrini’s academicism grew more pronounced, while his tendency to romantic indulgence was tempered by a new, architectonic sobriety. His best work after 1930 is in religious music: the gravely expressive Missa pro defunctis, though conservative, is free from the tiredness that mars much of Guerrini’s later output. On a different line of development, the Sette variazioni sopra una sarabanda di Corelli may, in their ingenious rethinking of material from the remoter past, reflect the influence of his teacher Busoni." John C.G. Waterhouse in Grove online 48 pp. Folio (ca. 345 x 244 mm.). Unbound. Notated in both ink and pencil on 16-stave music manuscript paper. Heavily annotated with amendations and corrections throughout and including sketches and sections ultimately cancelled. Several movements dated by the composer at their conclusion, indicating that the work was written over a period of time extending from September (or earlier in 1962) to December of 1962 in Rome. Housed in a card folder with a presentation inscription from the composer's daughter Vittoria. With movements listed, together with performance times, to title as follows: "Tema - Allemanda del Duca di Brunswick (1:15), Balletto (.60), Passacaglia (2.42), Corrente (1.48), Siciliana (2.25), Gaglilarda (2.55), Sarabanda (3.50), Fanfara e Corale (5)." The order of the movements has been revised, both on the title and within the manuscript.

        Orlando. A Biography

London: The Hogarth Press, 1928. London: The Hogarth Press,, 1928. Octavo. Original orange cloth, titles to spine gilt. In a specially made tan cloth solander box. Frontispiece and seven photographic illustrations including Virginia Woolf as Orlando. Light occasional foxing, endpapers lightly tanned, spine and edges of boards slightly sunned. First trade edition, first impression, presentation copy inscribed by the author to John Maynard Keynes's wife Lydia Lopokova on the front free endpaper, "Lydia from Virginia". Russian ballet dancer Lopokova became an unlikely member of the Bloomsbury group after marrying Keynes in 1925. Though the group initially snubbed Lopokova, Woolf eventually came to admire her for her charm and vivacity, evolving Septimus's wife Rezia from impressions she had of the dancer. Despite mixed reviews - which ranged from negative to glowing to simply confused - Woolf's hommage to androgyny and her former lover Vita Sackville-West was a run-away best-seller. During the first six months, Woolf's biographer James King notes, 8,104 copies were sold in England and 13,301 in the US. With Orlando, Woolf at last drew financial success and security from her writing. One of 5,080 copies printed.

A full length drawing of 'Rosie' with her boa, and large feathered hat on an off-white sheet. Sendak placed a word balloon , coming from Rosie which reads "Hello Paul, Rosie and M. In fine condition with a couple of small edge tears and creases. Rosie is one of the more prominent characters of Maurice Sendak and The Sign On Rosie's Door was written in 1960, centered around a girl who used to dance and sing on the stoop of her building. Would be perfect for a collector of Maurice Sendak art. Unframed. PROVENANCE:The art was purchased from an Auction House who has authenticated the piece in addition to third party authentication by PSA/DNA (one of which is shown in the listing, however the art will have two LOA's so both letters of authentication will accompany the art). In addition, a copy of the original lot description and the bill of sale will be included with the artwork and will provide both provenance and authenticity for the art. This piece is SIGNED by Maurice Sendak within the word ballon, and dated along the bottom. The art is in great condition and would be stunning framed. ** Maurice Sendak donated all of his original book illustrations to the Rosenbach Foundation in Philadelphia leaving very little of his original artwork available for private purchase.       Privately Printed. Florence, Italy. 1928. Privately Printed. Florence, Italy. 1928. FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo. (9.1 x 6.7 inches). LIMITED EDITION. One of 1000 numbered copies, signed by Lawrence on the limitation page. A bright and clean copy internally with a small previous owners bookplate on the front paste down endpaper. In the original mulberry coloured paper covered boards with black Phoenix design on the front board. Re-spined, some time ago, with mulberry coloured paper to match the boards and with the original white printed paper label re-applied to the spine. The label is a little rubbed and darkened and a small piece of the top corner, not affecting the lettering, has come away and been re-glued in place. The re-spine has been executed sympathetically and professionally many years ago and has aged nicely with the book. One small split, without loss, to the bottom 1.5 inches of the front hinge and some minor rubbing to the edges but overall a very good copy of this important book. Top edge rough trimmed, fore and bottom edges are untrimmed. Text missprints present on pages 4,6,25,78, and 219, as per Warren Roberts' Bibliography of D. H. Lawrence, item number A42, note on page 99. ----- Printed at the Tipografia Giuntina in Florence, under the direction of L. Franceschini, for Lawrence, and at his own expense, the book was offered for sale in the spring of 1928 for the price of Two Pounds. The fears of Police raids and the imminent suppression of the book in both England and America saw Lawrence selling the last copies for Four pounds by December that year and ordering another edition, of only 200 copies on common paper, from the printers. The literary merits of Lawrence's novel have been the subject of much debate but, like it or not, the book proved to be a hugely important work in the battle against censorship.
