        RAWDON'S ROOF

1928 - London: Elkin Mathews & Marrot, 1928. Original grey paper-covered boards decorated in blue-grey, with similarly-decorated dust jacket. First Edition, being No. 141 of 530 copies SIGNED by D.H. Lawrence. This was the seventh volume of this publisher's "Woburn Books" series (there would ultimately be 18 titles) -- and it is the most sought-after today, since among the series' authors Lawrence is the one who remains the most popular. Rawdon, estranged from his wife, declares that never again will a woman sleep under his roof; yet he has an affair with a nearby married woman, who one night arrives at his door declaring that she has just left her husband and needs a roof over her head.~This is a fine copy; the dust jacket is nearly fine as well (the spine with minor browning and a tiny bit of wear at its extremities). Loosely inserted is an Elkin Mathews & Marrot postcard, to be filled out to receive catalogues of upcoming publications. This book is not easy to find in this condition. Roberts A40.         The Money Illusion

New York: Adelphi Company 1928, 1st Edition 2nd printing. () xv, 245pp. Very good. Octavo. Original green boards with black lettering. Five black and white charts in text. Textblock is crisp and clean. Inscribed from Fisher to Professor Frederick Soddy in January 1929 on front free endpaper. Soddy was a chemist who become know for his social commentary later in life. His scientific work on radioactivity with Ernest Rutherford became the foundation for all subsequent work in the field. In 1910 Soddy was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1921 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry for his work on the theory of isotopes. This book, which discusses the fallacy of thinking about things in nominal currency instead of real terms, would have been of great interest to Soddy, who by 1920 had became a socialist and believed in the reform of the monetary system. At the time his ideas were disregarded, but since the 1970s they have now been seen as central to ecological economics and green activists. Previously a part of the Gerald M. Meier library, the Konosuke Matsushita Professor of International Economics and Policy Analysis, Emeritus, at Stanford Graduate School of Business. Inscribed copies from the author to other scientists and Nobel Laureates are very rare..

Coolidge Signs His Speech Given Before The American Legion On Tenth Anniversary Of The World War I Armistice

TMS. 17pg. 6 ¼? x 9?. No date [circa 1928]. No place. A lengthy typed manuscript signed ?Calvin Coolidge? at the conclusion. It is a contemporary typescript copy of President Coolidge?s speech on the tenth anniversary of Armistice Day; he gave the speech on November 11, 1928 before the American Legion in the nation?s capital. Some of the stirring content includes: ?We meet to give thanks for 10 more years of peace. Amid the multitude of bounties which have been bestowed upon us, we count that our supreme blessing. In all our domestic and foreign relations our chief concern is that it should be permanent. It is our belief that it is coming to be more and more realized as the natural state of mankind. Yet, while we are placing our faith in more complete understanding which shall harmonize with the universal conscience, we ought not to forget that all the rights we now possess, the peace we now enjoy, have been secured for us by a long series of sacrifices and of conflicts. We are able to participate in this celebration because our country had the resources, the character, and the spirit to raise, equip, and support with adequate supplies an Army and a Navy, which, by placing more than 2,000,000 men on the battle fields of Europe contributed to the making of the armistice on the 11th day of November, 1918...As we contemplate the past 10 years, there is every reason to be encouraged. It has been a period in which human freedom has been greatly extended, in which the right of self-government has come to be more widely recognized. Strong foundations have been laid for the support of these principles. We should by no means be discouraged because practice lags behind principle. We make progress slowly and over a course which can tolerate no open spaces. It is a long distance from a world that walks by force to a world that walks by faith. The United States has been so placed that it could advance with little interruption along the road of freedom and faith...It is befitting that we should pursue our course without exultation, with due humility, and with due gratitude for the important contributions of the more ancient nations which have helped to make possible our present progress and our future hope. The gravest responsibilities that can come to a people in this world have come to us. We must not fail to meet them in accordance with the requirements of conscience and righteousness.? The Disabled American Veterans, on the tenth anniversary of the Armistice, raised money by selling forget-me-nots; Mrs. Coolidge received the first one and the President signed a $6 million bill to provide for hospitalization of veterans. Half of the manuscript?s pages have some type of patriotic vignettes at the top. There are also a couple of handwritten corrections and it may have been removed from some type of book proposal. It is in very fine condition with a bold signature. I could locate no other signed copy of this speech.

In modern times, it is often published with the title The Confessions of Jean-Jacques Rousseau in order to distinguish it from Saint Augustine's Confessions. Covering the first fifty-three years of Rousseau's life, up to 1765, it was completed in 1769, but was not published until 1782, four years after Rousseau's death, even though Rousseau did read excerpts of his manuscript publicly at various salons and other meeting places.

HERBERT HOOVER'S LEBENSLAUF IN BILDERN. No. 1

The Republican National Committee., New York City 1928 - Cartoon like illustrations in German. Eighteen page booklet with four drawings to a page. Scan of the front page available upon request. This is is a German translation of the English-language version, by the cartoonist Bob Satterfield, which went under the title "Picture life of a great American" and was syndicated for distribution in 1928. Only a few libraries in the country own the English language version and the German version is apparently ultra rare. The RNC issued selected campaign materials in various languages; presumably this German language version of the cartoon series was intended for German newspapers in places like Milwaukee.         [The Sherston trilogy:]

London: Faber & Gwyer Limited/Faber & Faber Limited,, 1928-30-36. Memoirs of a Foxhunting Man; Memoirs of an Infantry Officer; Sherston's Progress. 3 works, octavo. Original blue cloth, titles gilt to spines, top edge of third work brown. With the dust jackets for the first two works only. Cloth covers with occasional rubbing or slight marking (mostly to Sherston's Progress), light spotting or toning to edges and endpapers, but otherwise internally clean, a sound and good set, with the dust jacket of the first work spine defective and a little marked and chipped, and the dust jacket of the second work spine-tanned, chipped at ends and corners, and with some marking and dust soiling, and the dust jacket lacking from the third work. First editions, first impressions, of each title, signed by Sassoon in Memoirs of an Infantry Officer (on the colophon, with the inscription, "2000 copies sold before publication. Very scarce. Siegfried Sassoon, January 1948"), and also signed by Sassoon in Sherston's Progress on the leaf bearing the epigraph "I told him that I was a Pilgrim / going to the Celestial City", and an original pen and ink drawing by Sassoon of the legs and feet of said pilgrim, signed "Siegfried Sassoon". These three copies, though without ownership inscription, are all from the collection of Rolf O. Barber, a schoolteacher at Oundle who tutored Sassoon's son George. He developed a friendship with the poet and possessed a number of signed and inscribed Sassoon books. His copy of The Daffodil Murderer was inscribed to him by Sassoon in January 1948, as with the Infantry Officer copy in this set. Oddly, yet intriguingly, the copy of Sherston's Progress here bears the bookplate of Major-General Sir Percy Zachariah Cox (1864-1937) a British Indian Army officer and colonial administrator in the Middle East. During the war Cox served as Chief Political Officer with the Indian Expeditionary Force in the fight against the Ottoman Empire, taking part in the Mesopotamian and Palestinian campaigns. He was promoted to Honorary Major-General in May 1917. At the end of hostilities he was appointed Acting Minister in Tehran, negotiating the Anglo-Persian Agreement. From this point he became a major political agent in the creation of Iraq, acting as High Commissioner of Iraq until 1923. Cox died (from a heart attack while hunting) in February 1937, so it is most likely that this book was dispersed after his death (his only son was killed in the War, 1917), and latterly picked up by Barber, who was in a position to get Sassoon to sign it, and personalise it thus with an original drawing. A highly appealing set.

Lastly a first edition of the biographical account Pierre Loti, the Romance of a Great Writer by Edmund B. D'Auvergne. Each volume features a coloured frontispiece. At his best Pierre Loti was unquestionably the finest descriptive writer of the day. In the delicate exactitude with which he reproduced the impression given to his own alert nerves by unfamiliar forms, colours, sounds and perfumes, he was without a rival. But he was not satisfied with this exterior charm; he desired to blend with it a moral sensibility of the extremest refinement, at once sensual and ethereal. Many of his best books are long sobs of remorseful memory, so personal, so intimate, that an English reader is amazed to find such depth of feeling compatible with the power of minutely and publicly recording what is felt. Pierre Loti remains, in the mechanism of style and cadence, one of the most original and most perfect French writers of the second half of the 19th century. Thirteen volumes of the original fourteen, with only Japan. (Madame Chrysantheme) absent. With Ramsden bookplates to the front pastedown of each volume. Condition: In original cloth bindings with original unclipped dustwrappers. Externally, dustwrappers are sound, with light chipping to extremities, and fading to the spines. One volume has a repair to the spine. Cloth is smart, with very light rubbing to extremities. Internally, firmly bound, bright and clean throughout, aside from some very light off-setting to the endpapers. Overall: NEAR FINE with VERY GOOD INDEEDdustwrappers.
