Precedes the English trade edition (Hogarth Press, 1928) by nine days. Woolf's transgendered picaresque, sending Orlando on adventures through four centuries and a variety of guises. The eponymous hero(ine) was modelled on the author's friend Vita Sackville-West, to whom the book is dedicated.         ORLANDO A BIOGRAPHY

New York: Crosby Gaige, 1928.. Large octavo. Gilt cloth, t.e.g. Frontis and plates. Frontis. Trace of minor foxing to front endsheets, a few very minor smudges to cloth, otherwise about fine. First edition, preceding the UK trade edition. Copy #554 of eight hundred numbered copies (of 861), signed by the author. Woolf's amazing fictitious four century transgender "biography" of an ageless being named Orlando who starts life as an Elizabethan nobleman, then eventually transforms into a woman poet of vast social insight. It was written for, and inspired by, Woolf's friend and lover, Vita Sackville- West, to whom the book was dedicated and who appears as Orlando at various life-stages in several of the book's photographs. It has been described as "the longest love letter ever written." KIRKPATRICK A11a.

        Orlando

Crosby Gaige 1928 - New York Crosby Gaige, 1928. Limited Edition, Signed By Virginia Woolf WOOLF, Virginia. Orlando. A Biography New York: Crosby Gaige, 1928. First edition, limited to 861 copies, one of 800 numbered copies signed by the author in her signature color, this is a very low number -- 37. Octavo (9 x 6 inches; 228 x 153 mm). [iv], 333, [1, blank], [1, limitation page], [1, blank] pp. With eight inserted black-and-white plates, including frontispiece. Original full black cloth. Gilt-stamped boards and spine. Top edges gilt, others uncut. In very good condition. One of Woolf’s best works, Orlando follows the long and unusual life (over three hundred years) of the title character, whose life begins in Elizabethan England as a nobleman, and continues in the modern era as a brilliant woman poet (based on Woolf’s friend, Victoria Sackville-West). This excellent feminist novel emphasizes Woolf’s belief that women are the intellectual equals of men (and can be considered a companion piece to her A Room of One’s Own). Kirkpatrick A11. HBS 65642.
