Photo Album - HMS Kent - Unique and Rare Photos in the Far East

China, 1928. China, Japan, 1928-1931. Original photograph album of a British Royal Marine who served on the HMS Kent, flagship of the China Station fleet, in the early years of Nationalist leadership of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, and during the Chinese Civil War. Features rare snapshot photographs of the re-patriation ceremony for remains of President Sun-Yat-Sen. Also with numerous snapshot views of Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Hankou, Nanjing, Qingdao, Weihai, Xiamen, and Dalian in China, views of Yokohama, Tokyo, Kamakura, Kobe and Kyoto in Japan, and a scant few views of Saigon, Bangkok, British Labuan, and Manila. Contains 182 gelatin silver print photographs, a scant few being photographic postcards, each mounted with corners onto taupe cardstock leaves. Oblong Quarto. String-tied album measuring approximately 39 x 29 cm, brown cloth boards, titled in gilt to spine. Photographs measure approximately 13 x 8 cm, with a commemorative composite frontis photograph measuring 26,5 x 18 cm. Minor wear to boards, mainly to spine, otherwise in Very Good Condition, with crisp, pleasing photographs. Introductory views of HMS Kent, her Admiral, Captain, Commander, and her crew, are followed by spectacular scenes of Chinese commerce, long-standing customs surrounding death and religion, sacred monuments and ancient iconic fortifications, junks designed for a variety of uses, and the like, captured firsthand by an unidentified Royal Marine. Immediately subsequent to the Northern Expedition for the reunification of China in 1928, during an era of economic and social reform led by Kuomintang (KMT) military leader Chiang Kai-shek, an era also marked with civil war, HMS Kent arrived in China for a three year commission. As such, the marine was privy to observe firsthand certain historically significant events such as the repatriation funeral of the remains of Sun-Yat-Sen (founding father of the Republic of China) from from Beijing to a Mausoleum in Nanjing. Prisoners of war were also photographed as they performed arduous labour, chained together, for their captors. Warships lining the Whapoa dock, a fallen Chinese aircraft, burnt remnants of the SS Haiching attacked by pirates in 1929, and a junk armed with cannons, provide an uncommon pictorial record of a fractured nation seeking cohesiveness. One hundred and nineteen (119) photographs pertain to China, with views from Shanghai, Peking, Hong Kong, Hankow, Nanking, Tsingtao, Dairen, Amoy, and the Yangtse river. Highlights include traditional funeral processions, rivers crowded with sampans, merchants, night scenes, the Hong Kong Peak funicular railway, the Great Wall, enormous ancient city gates and city walls once impenetrable by foreigners, Pekin's Winter Palace, Temple of Heaven, jade pagodas and bronze statues, the Ming Tomb guardian statues, and city streets adorned with a plethora of flags. At least two voyages were made to Japan, rendering twenty-seven (27) photographs. These include crisp views of the Hasedera Kannon Temple in Kamakura and a young guard at its entrance, Mount Fuji on a clear day, the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, a rail journey to Kyoto, Kobe's theatre street and night lights, and the sulphur springs at Unzen. At Saigon, where 5 photographs were taken, on 16 December 1930, King of Siam Prajadhipok or Rama VII (1893-1941) visited the HMS Kent, together with his wife, Queen Rambhai Barni, the royals posing for a group photograph. The old and new palaces of Bangkok are seen in 5 photographs. Singapore appears in ten photographs; British Borneo is seen in five; and Manila in four. Dispersed within the volume are seven hand-drawn charts, photographed and detailing various voyages made over the three years, including HMS Kent's maiden voyage from Chatham to Wei Hai Wei to join the 5th Cruiser Squadron on the China Station in 1928. A single photograph also captures a manuscript summary of the Commission, headed "HMS Kent in the Far East From Aug 1928 to March 1931. Commissioned on 22 June 1928, HMS Kent (54) was assigned to the 5th Cruiser Squadron on the China Station, serving as flagship for the bulk of her career. She was the base for a series of seven heavy cruisers built for the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy. During the voyage illustrated in this album, in 1929-30, she was fitted with an aircraft catapult as well as a High-Angle Control System to direct her anti-aircraft guns.. Very Good.

Le astuzie femminili. Autograph musical manuscript in piano-vocal score. Unsigned

Small folio (220 x 302 mm). Two numbered leaves, pages numbered 3-6 pp. Notated in pencil on music paper with 16 hand-drawn staves, four staves per system. With "Astuzie fem." to upper left corner of p. 3; "Astuzie femmi." to upper left corner of p. 6; and heading "II" to p. 3. Continuous sketch for a duet (mostly in recitative style) of "Ub." and "Serp." Conclusion lacking. Text incipit: "Olà dove si sta"; some corrections; five measures of p. 5 deleted. Slightly worn; creased at folds; edges partially uncut. With: A printed form issued by the Société des Auteurs & Compositeurs dramatiques, Paris, June 1928, listing Respighi's royalties from three performances of his ballet La Boutique fantasque in Liège, Brussels, and Antwerp, completed in manuscript in an unidentified hand. . Pedarra 126. Not in Labroca. Respighi's arrangement was commissioned by Serge Diaghilev, completed in 1920, and first performed at the Paris Opéra on May 27, 1920. The arrangement remained unpublished in Respighi's lifetime. Its posthumous edition (Milan: Ricordi, 1939) was the work of Elsa Respighi and M. Rossi. Domenico Cimarosa's original comic opera in two acts was first performed at the Teatro dei Fiorentini, Naples, on August 26, 1794. There are no characters with names beginning "Ub." or "Serp." in either Cimarosa's original or the printed version of Respighi's arrangement. It appears that Respighi at least temporarily changed the names of the characters; the position of the sketch within the composition is difficult to determine for the same reason. "At the beginning of August (1919) we [Elsa and Ottorino Respighi] received a letter from Diaghilev inviting Respighi to join him in Naples to discuss the adaptation of CimarosaÂ’s Le astuzie femminili and talk over other plans - a delightful interlude during our stay on Capri... Diaghilev was thinking of broadening the repertoire of his famous Russian ballet company with some old Italian operas, suitably abridged and adapted of course. To tell the truth, we felt that DiaghilevÂ’s ideas on the matter were rather vague and although Le astuzie femminili was so eminently suited to the purpose because of the subject and the Russian melodies used by Cimarosa for the dances in the finale, the experiment did not turn out a success. Naturally when singers are involved [in a ballet] everything becomes difficult and complicated and even Diaghilev, who had been the originator of so many brilliant ideas, had to admit that he was on the wrong track." Elsa Respighi in her biography of Ottorino Respighi.

Black Gold an African-American, "Race Film" Silent Movie Lobby Cards, Poster, and Pressbook

Jacksonville, FL: Norman Studios, 1928. Ephemera. Very Good. A complete set of all eight lobby cards for the "All Colored Cast" film Black Gold along with a half-sheet (22" x 28" when unfolded) movie poster-press book featuring one quarter-sheet orange and blue poster, one quarter-sheet blue and white poster, illustrations of the lobby cards, marketing suggestions, and advertising for other Norman films. The lobby cards are in nice shape with some light foxing, edge wear, and corner pinholes. The half-sheet poster-press book is in very good shape and has no wear. There are some small splits along the orignial mailing folds. Race films, which are films specifically produced for African-American audiences featuring an African-American cast, first made their appearance around 1915. About 500 different films were produced, and they proved to be exceptionally popular in their time, although they have been largely forgotten or ignored by film historians. Norman Studios' most famous and popular film was Black Gold, a drama about the oil business based upon the true story of John Crisp, the owner of three wells in the all black city of Tatums, Oklahoma. The movie starred "Lawrence Criner and Katherine Boyd. Original Lafayette Players. Steve Reynold, "Peg" Alfred Norcom, United States Marshall L. B. Tatums, and the Entire City of Tatums, Okla." The half-sheet poster-press book is relatively uncommon although a more frequently found smaller version of it exists without the blue and white poster and much of the other information. The lobby cards are exceptionally scarce.

        His Amatory Poems

1928. Shakespeare's Love Poems and SonnetsOne of Two Hundred Large-Paper Copies Specially Bound by Bennett of New YorkSHAKESPEARE, William. Will Shakespeare. His Amatory Poems. The Sonnets. Venus and Adonis. The Rape of Lucrece. The Passionate Pilgrim. Elaborated with Frontispiece Portrait and Four Engravings from Classic Originals. New York: The Bennett Libraries, Inc., 1928. One of 200 Large-Paper Copies printed on Holland Pannekoek Paper (out of a total edition of 1,000).Royal octavo (9 3/8 x 6 1/2 inches; 239 x 165 mm.). [ii, limitation], 303, [1, blank] pp. Title page and half-titles printed in red and black. Engraved portrait frontispiece and four plates.Publishers (bound by Bennett, NY) full mottled calf, covers ruled in blind. Spine with five raised bands ruled in blind with two maroon morocco gilt lettered labels, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut. A fine copy, many of the pages uncut.Shakespeare's Sonnets is the title of a collection of 154 sonnets first published in 1609 and accredited to William Shakespeare which cover themes such as the passage of time, love, beauty and mortality. The first 17 poems, traditionally called the procreation sonnets, are addressed to a young man urging him to marry and have children in order to immortalize his beauty by passing it to the next generation. Other sonnets express the speaker's love for a young man; brood upon loneliness, death, and the transience of life; seem to criticize the young man for preferring a rival poet; express ambiguous feelings for the speaker's mistress; and pun on the poet's name. The final two sonnets are allegorical treatments of Greek epigrams referring to the "little love-god" Cupid.Venus and Adonis (1592-1593) is a poem by William Shakespeare with a plot based on passages from Ovid's Metamorphoses. It is a complex, kaleidoscopic work, using constantly shifting tone and perspective to present contrasting views of the nature of love. The Rape of Lucrece (1594) is a narrative poem by William Shakespeare about the legendary Lucretia. In his previous narrative poem, Venus and Adonis (1593), Shakespeare had included a dedicatory letter to his patron, the Earl of Southampton, in which he promised to write a "graver work". Accordingly, The Rape of Lucrece has a serious tone throughout. The Passionate Pilgrim (1599) is an anthology of 20 poems collected and published by William Jaggard that were attributed to "W. Shakespeare" on the title page, only five of which are considered authentically Shakespearean. These are two sonnets, later to be published in the 1609 collection of Shakespeare's Sonnets, and three poems extracted from the play Love's Labour's Lost. Internal and external evidence contradicts the title-page attribution to Shakespeare. Five were attributed to other poets during his lifetime, and two were published in other collections anonymously.

        West-Running Brook

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1928. Hardcover. Near Fine/very good. J. J. Lankes. Small quarto. viii, 58pp. One of 1,000 copies signed by the author. Illustrated with four full-page woodcuts, each of which is signed in pencil by the artist, J. J. Lankes. All tissue guards present, no foxing at all. Top edge gilt. This is a particularly fresh copy. There is only a single very small spot (1/4 inch) of discoloration on table of the contents page, otherwise the pages are completely fine, no foxing or soiling, bright and clear throughout. The boards in this limited edition are covered with a Japanese paper (autumn leaf pattern) that is notoriously prone to wear. This copy is almost free of wear, just a tiny (as in a sliver) wear spot where the paper meets the cloth spine. See photos. (Note that the little speck on the top of the front corner is not soiling, it is the beginning of another leaf in the patterned paper.) No paper loss to the corners. The book appears to have spent it's entire life in the original slipcase. The book is now protected in a mylar wrap. The slipcase is complete, without splits, but with some general wear, rubbing along one thin edge exposing the cardboard box, single drop of water spot on top. The label on the spine has a couple of neat little edge chips, but the title is complete and clear. The photo shows all the wear clearly. The other sides of the boards are all very nice. All and all, a solidly near fine copy of the book in a strong VG copy of the slipcase. A very nice copy of a fragile title.

Persian Pictures. With a Preface by Sir E. Denison Ross

London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1928., 1928. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY BELL'S SISTER. Octavo, pp.198. Bound in publisher's green cloth with title and author's name in gilt lettering to spine, with a decorative gilt border at endcaps. In a simple cream dustjacket with book details printed in black to front of jacket, with an illustration of a (presumably) Persian man on horseback, shooting a bow and arrow. Dustjacket also features a small review/description reading 'This book of travellers' tales, in every way worthy to rank with Kinglake's EOTHEN, was written at the age of 26, after her first visit to the East. It fills the gap of two years in her letters and also sets out the reasons for the fascination which that romantic part of the world always had for her. It is a book full of charm and shrewd observation.' Cloth boards in excellent condition, with limited signs of wear, one faint mark to rear board, all corners bumped, endcaps very slightly pushed, gilt lettering is a little dulled, top edge gilt, fore edge shows spotting, personal stamp of Sir Percy Cox, one of the major figures in the creation of Iraq, attractively mounted to pastedown. Text block very clean throughout, excepting some minor browning toward very first and final few leaves. Inscription reads, 'To Sir Percy Cox, With much gratitude. Florence Bell, 1928'. Dustjacket in like condition, with some dustiness, discolouration at spine, darkened along creases, with some negligible chips (primarily at spine), flaps very clean. An excellent copy. The book's ownership has imparted it with a fascinating legacy.

'The Mint' and Later Writings About Service Life The large format limited edition, copy #43 of 50 bound in full goatskin and slipcased

Fordingbridge, Hampshire: Castle Hill Press, 2009. Limited Edition. Full Leather. This Castle Hill Press limited large format edition publishes the original (1928) text of The Mint, together with significant "Later Writings about Service Life" and additional unpublished material. Here is copy #43 of just 50 issued thus, unique in both binding and content. The Mint is T.E. Lawrence's unstintingly candid portrait about life in Royal Air Force ranks. "I set out to give a picture of the R.A.F, and my picture might be impressive and clever if I showed only the shadow of it... but I was not making a work of art, but a portrait." T.E. Lawrence (1888-1935) found fame as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This time defined Lawrence with indelible experience and celebrity which he would spend the rest of his famously short life struggling to reconcile and reject, to recount and repress. Lawrence told the tale of this time in Seven Pillars of Wisdom, a work with a tortuous writing, editing, and publishing history culminating in posthumous publication. Perhaps equally tortuous is the tale of how this story about the R.A.F. was written and published. In a state of nervous exhaustion following the First World War, his work on the post-war settlement, and writing and re-writing Seven Pillars of Wisdom, in 1922, Lawrence enlisted in the ranks of the R.A.F. under the name of John Hume Ross. He swiftly concluded "there is grand stuff here, and if I could write it..." so he began making notes "scribbled at night, between last post and lights out, in bed." In January 1923 his identity became public and he was discharged from the R.A.F., but allowed to re-enlist two and a half years later, this time using the surname "Shaw", under which he had meanwhile served in the Tank Corps. On re-enlistment, he resumed making notes. In 1927, while serving in Karachi, Lawrence arranged these notes into a manuscript which he circulated to a small number of people, including Air Marshal Hugh Trenchard. As with Seven Pillars of Wisdom, publishers were eager, but Lawrence resisted, in part due to Trenchard's concerns. A saga followed in which efforts were made to control publication via uncirculated copyright editions in both the U.S. and Britain; the book remained unavailable to the public. Lawrence made revisions in the last months of his life with a possible view to publication in a private edition (as he had done with the 1926 Subscriber's Edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom), but the work remained unpublished until 1955, after the death of an officer described unfavorably in the text. Even then, the British edition blanked out objectionable words and substituted name changes to avoid libel. This spectacular limited edition of The Mint is the most comprehensive and elaborate yet published, unique in both binding and content. This copy is pristine, in new condition direct from the publisher. The edition "contains the full 1928 text of The Mint, together with a selection of Lawrence's later writings about his life in the ranks... The narrative of Lawrence's RAF years therefore begins in 1922 and ends with his retirement in February 1935... The result is a far more interesting version of Lawrence's second book..."         She Who Sleeps

London. Cassell. 1928, 1928. First Edition. 8vo. Publisher's blue cloth titled in gilt, clean fresh and bright with slight bumping to spine ends. Spotting to page edges, tiny nick to cloth at head of spine. Internally clean, very occasional light spotting. In bright, clean dustwrapper with some light edgewear and with four small triangles of loss to the spine ends that do not interfere with the text. Minor fraying to spine ends of wrapper, clean and unfaded with rear panel advertising Cassell's 7/6 Novels series, of which this was one. Very scarce in wrapper, even more so in a wrapper this bright and attractive. A typically Rohmer-esque tale in which a 3000 year old Egyptian princess is brought back from a state of suspended animation to become the darling of New York high society. This is at least provides one explanation for the existence of Paris Hilton; 'divine retribution' is another that springs to mind. Bleiler; Supernatural Fiction.
