Decline and Fall. An Illustrated Novelette

London: Chapman & Hall Ltd,, 1928. Octavo. Original red marbled cloth, gilt lettered spine. Illustrations by Evelyn Waugh. Spine rolled and faintly sunned, extremely minor foxing to contents; an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. After the book was rejected for indecency by the publisher of his earlier biography of Rossetti, Waugh offered the manuscript to Chapman & Hall, but he did so while his father, who was the managing director of the firm, was away on holiday. The acting-director agreed to publish the novel. Arthur Waugh returned to London to discover that his son was his firm's newest author. When Arthur Waugh's biography was published three years later, however, Decline and Fall and Vile Bodies, the two novels published under his directorship of Chapman & Hall, were not mentioned. The indelicate material, which Martin Stannard has since revealed in fact did go through some "taming" revisions, was perhaps a bit too much for the elder Waugh.

German Incunabula in the British Museum

London: Victor Gollancz Limited, 1928. Folio. (vi), 26pp., + (152)ff. facsimile plates. From an edition of 553, this is one of thirty copies printed on handmade paper with English text and signed by the author, Stanley Morison. With a fifteenth-century frontispiece in color and "one hundred & fifty-two facsimile plates of fine book-pages from presses of Germany, German-Switzerland and Austria-Hungary," printed in black and red. Morison, a British typographer and designer, served as a consultant with the Monotype Corporation from 1923 to 1967 and is perhaps most notable for his commission of the Times New Roman typeface in 1931. In the 1920s and 1930s, when this volume was compiled, his work was primarily focused on researching and adapting historical typefaces. In the Introduction, he writes, "The rapid progress of the so-called 'Roman' type, first in scientific and cultural works and finally in newspapers, is an indication that there is no future even in Germany for her traditional type form. It would be lamentable if, as a result of disuse, the noble letter of the Gutenberg Bible were to lack admirers in the present day." Bound in black linen with gilt-titled spine and "Naked Girl Supporting Cartouche" by David Jones in gilt on front cover. Original cream dust jacket titled in black and red, and black linen slipcase. Fading, wear, and some soiling to covers and slipcase; edgewear at head, soiling, and small closed tear to front of dust jacket.

Dorso a quattro nervature.

On a Problem of Formal Logic (reprinted from:) Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society. Series 2, Volume 30, Part 4

London: The London Mathematical Society,, 1928. Octavo (273 × 180 mm)., pp. (1), 264-286 + final blank leaf. Uncut and largely unopened, wire-stitched in the original printed grey wrappers. Wrappers darkened in places and a little chipped. An excellent copy. Original offprint of a paper read by Ramsey to the London Mathematical Society on December 13 1928, "primarily concerned with a special case of one of the problems of mathematical logic, the problem of finding a regular procedure to determine the truth or falsity of any given logical formula" p. 264.) This problem is commonly known as the Entscheidungsproblem, or "decision problem", and had been a source of keen debate among logicians before it was proven by Kurt Gödel in 1931 and Alonzo Church in 1936 that David Hilbert, and the other members of the formalist school of anti-logistic mathematics, were mistaken: all arithmetic systems must contain propositions which are not provable in that system. "Ramsey's main interest in mathematics was in its foundations. His 'The foundations of mathematics', read to the London Mathematical Society on 12 November 1925, was the culmination of the reduction of mathematics to logic undertaken in Russell's and Whitehead's Principia mathematica (1913). On mathematics itself he published only eight pages, 'On a problem of formal logic' (read to the London Mathematical Society on 13 December 1928), but this has since become the basis of a branch of mathematics known as Ramsey theory" (OBNB.)

"Using the pseudonym Felix Salten, journalist Siegmund Salzmann wrote several anthropomorphic animal tales, including the novel Bambi This story of life in the forest is written with integrity, emotion and great skill Bambi remains [Salten's] best-known work, and it is a classic in the genre of animal stories" (Silvey, 571-72). Walt Disney famously adapted the book to the screen in his 1942 animated film. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Novels & Selected Writings of Daniel Defoe 14 Volumes Large Paper Edition

Boston: Printed at the Shakespeare Head Press for Houghton Mifflin Company, 1928. Limited Edition. All fourteen volumes of this complete set are in near fine condition in 1/4 beige buckram and light brown paper covered boards with gilt stamped leather spine labels. All are small quartos measuring 9 1/4" by 6" with rough cut pages to the text blocks many of which are un-opened. The only condition issue is there has been a reaction that occurred between the glue used to paste the leather labels to the cloth spines causing a narrow, brown stain around each label. Also, the gilt text on the leather label for volume V is partially obscured due to rubbing and abrasion. One of only 530 copies printed by the Shakespeare Head Press of which 500 were for sale. This set carries the number 449 within each volume. Many of the volumes contain a fold-out frontispiece map which relates to the title of each volume. The set includes: Moll Flanders in two volumes; Colonel Jack and John Gow in two volumes; The Life Adventures and Pyracies of the famous Captain Singleton; Memoirs of a Cavalier in one volume; Robinson Crusoe in three volumes; A Journal of the Plague Year in one volume; The Fortunate Mistress in two volumes; and, Shortest Way with the Dissenters and English Commerce each in their own volumes. A very handsome, clean, tight and highly collectible set with no prior owner's markings, notations or book plates.
