        Transit of Venus

Paris: The Black Sun Press,, 1928. Small octavo. Original printed wrappers, titles to front cover in red, red and black rule to front cover. An excellent copy. First edition, first printing, one of 44 copies printed. Inscribed by Crosby on the front endpaper, "For Ronald Davies, from Harry Crosby January 1929." Harry Crosby (1898?-1929) was born the heir to one of Boston's wealthiest banking families, but after serving as an ambulance driver during the First World War he abandoned his wealth to live as an author in Paris with his wife Caresse Crosby. They embedded themselves in the avant-garde cultural scene, befriending the likes of Dali, Hemingway and Cartier-Bresson, founded the Black Sun Press which helped to publish the early works of Joyce, Eliot, Pound and Hart Crane, and lived a life of utter dissolution off Harry's inheritance which, when it ran out, had to be supplemented by telegrams to his banker father such as the infamous, "PLEASE SELL $10,000 WORTH OF STOCK. WE HAVE DECIDED TO LIVE A MAD AND EXTRAVAGANT LIFE", (to which the father, reluctantly but nonetheless amazingly, assented).

        Chinese Paintings in American Collections

Les Edition, Paris - 1928, 1st Edition. () Very good. 109pp. Tall folio (33.5 X 41 cm.) Original blue cloth binding with gilt title on spine. Top edge gilt and others untrimmed. Top and bottom of spine with a bit of minor repair. Foredge a bit foxed and with a bit of light foxing on a number of the plate margins. Boards a bit bumped and with slight soiling. A total of 200 full page illustrations all printed in photogravure. Overall a very nice copy of a title difficult to find in good condtion. Although there is no limitation we can assume this was printed in quite small numbers due to its scarcity. It seems the book may also have been issued in 5 portfolios as well. The quality of the plates is very good indeed. No complete copy at auction in over 20 years and then it seems that most copies that surface are x-library of which this copy is not.         The Tower

London: MacMillan & Co.. First Edition.. Excellent condition with some wear and rubbing to the binding. Interior excellent and clean ! No annotations or former name entries. Very clean example of this rare books.. First Edition. London, MacMillan & Co., 1928. 8°. 110 pages. Hardcover. Original, beautifully illustrated cloth with gilt lettering and ornaments after a design by Sturge Moore. Excellent condition with some wear and rubbing to the binding. Interior excellent and clean ! No annotations or former name entries. Very clean example of this rare books. [Wade 158] Thoor Ballylee Castle (Irish Túr Bhaile Uí Laí) is a fortified, 15th (or 16th) century Hiberno-Norman tower house built by the septs de Burgo, or Burke, near the town of Gort in County Galway, Ireland. It is also known as Yeats' Tower because it was once owned and inhabited by the poet William Butler Yeats. (Wikipedia) The Tower was a book of poems by W. B. Yeats, published in 1928. The Tower was Yeats's first major collection as Nobel Laureate after receiving the Nobel Prize in 1923. It is considered to be one of the poet's most influential volumes and was well received by the public. The title, which the book shares with the second poem, refers to Ballylee Castle, a Norman tower which Yeats purchased and restored in 1917. Yeats Gaelicized the name to Thoor Ballyllee, and it has retained the title to this day. Yeats often summered at Thoor Ballylee with his family until 1928. The book includes several of Yeats' most famous poems, including "Sailing to Byzantium," "Leda and the Swan," and "Among School Children." All of the poems included in The Tower had previously appeared elsewhere in print collections and periodicals. Many of the poems featured in Seven Poems and a Fragment, The Cat and the Moon and Certain Poems, and October Blast released by Cuala Press. Other poems had been collected in A Vision. Yeats commissioned Thomas Sturge Moore to create the cover for the volume in 1927. The gold wood-cut style image depicts Thoor Ballylee and its reflection in waters below the tower all on a light green background. The poet praised Moore's artwork, noting that the cover was both a true representation of Thoor Ballylee and a successful symbolic design for the collection. Moore's work on The Tower and other collections solidified Yeats's modern image in both American and English print editions. Many of the poems in The Tower demonstrate Yeats's disillusionment with the limitations of the physical world and his withdrawal from ordinary life. The poet seeks to transcend the conflicts between the dichotomies of mind/body and thought/action by allowing poetry to exist in the world of vision rather than the world of reality. (Wikipedia)

Cambridge University Press, 1928. Quarto. xv, 264pp. Deluxe Edition, Volume 6. One of 160 copies printed on handmade Batchelor Kelmscott paper and featuring additional inserts not included in the ordinary edition. Among these are two illustrations by David Jones: "Roses and Thorns" (p. 225), and "The Piping Fisherman," an original copper engraving from the rare Monotype Seven Fables of Aesop, signed in pencil by the artist (p. 230). The latter insert shows a faint crease along outer edge, as well as a small, unobtrusive spot to illustration. Containing a wide range of printed and tipped-in examples, inserts, and full-page illustrations, this volume is a delight for the eyes as well as a rich typographical resource. Bound in green cloth, the spine is stamped with an Art Deco-style gilt-and-black design, appropriately reminiscent of stylized leaves. This design is repeated along the fore-edges of the front and back covers, and echoed again in gold on the endpapers. Lower corners rubbed, else about fine.

Layton, with his bookplate and inscribed on the title page: "Layton 11.2.49". Layton (1884-1966), economist and newspaper proprietor, "was a leading member of a group of Liberals with a major influence on public opinion. They moved in Whitehall and Westminster circles, Fleet Street, the City, and Oxford and Cambridge. Among the number were Keynes, Beveridge, Gilbert Murray, and Seebohm Rowntree... Layton's highest-profile role in developing Liberal policy was as chairman of the executive committee of the Liberal Industrial Inquiry (as opposed to 'Enquiry', carefully chosen to avoid the acronym LIE), which produced the Yellow Book of 1928 [the present work]. This put forward ideas on more widespread economic planning, and plans to use public works schemes to tackle unemployment. After a decade of struggling to define new economic ideas in response to more polarized politics, the Liberals had developed a clear agenda. Layton's contacts and drive had provided much of the stimulus underpinning the project" (ODNB).

        Eva und Adam.

Ohne weitere Angaben [um 1928].. Folio (50x34 cm). Portefeuille legerement frotte. Tres rare. Sans reference bibliographique. -------------------------------English description available on request.

AROUND THE WORLD, 1928: Passenger's Photo Album from a Journey on the Ocean Liner "Resolute," Hamburg-America Line

1928. Hardcover. Very Good+. Stab binding, leather over flexible boards, "Photographs / Around the World 1928 / S. S. Resolute" stamped in gilt on front board; oblong, 13x10 inches; contains over 450 b/w silver gelatin prints, affixed to recto and verso of each page with corner mounts, usually 4 per page. The group portraits offer a wonderul look at the costume and fashions of ther period. The smaller photographs offer a few images of festivites -- and one storm -- on deck, but the majority of the album is given over to wonderful images of landscapes, landmarks, and people encountered on our compiler's long journey, from January to May of 1928. Ports visited include: Maderia, Algiers, Monte Carlo, Nice, Naples, Athens, Jerusalem, Djibouti, Agra, Delhi, Benares, Bombay, Calcutta, Ceylon, Rangoon, Sumatra, Java, Singapore, Bangkok, Borneo, Manila, Hong Kong, Formosa, Shanghai, Peking, Kyoto, Nikko, Kobe, Yokohara, Honolulu, and the Panama Canal. Boards deteriorating along the edges; pages a bit brittle; a few corner mounts broken, with photographs laid in. Nicely composed, exposed and printed, all photographs in this rich volume are in excellent condition, and removable for display (if so desired).

        Urformen der Kunst

Ernst Wasmuth [1928], Berlin - Folio. XVII, [3]pp (Text), 120 leaves (Plates). Original photo-illustrated dust-jacket over gilt-stamped green cloth with gold lettering on spine and front cover. DJ protected by modern mylar. Publisher's device on title. First edition of the most famous work by German botanist and photographer, Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932). "His entire photographic output is devoted to plant parts: twig ends, seed pods, tendrils, leaf buds etc. These he meticulously arranged against stark backgrounds and photographed in magnification, so that unfamiliar shapes from the vegetal worlds are revealed as startling, elegant architectural forms. Since the first publication of his photographs in the late twenties his work is considered to be one of the aesthetic highlights of photo history." Published in 1928 when Blossfeldt was sixty-three and a professor of applied art at the Berliner Kunsthochschule, "Urformen der Kunst" quickly became an international bestseller and in turn made Blossfeldt famous almost overnight. His contemporaries were enchanted by the abstract shapes and structures in nature that he revealed to the world. In 2001 "Urformen der Kunst" was included in "The Book of 101 Books" as one of the seminal photographic books of the Twentieth Century. Illustrated with 120 b/w reproductions in photogravure. Each image is approx. 10 1/4 x 7 1/2" on a 12 1/4 x 9 1/2" sheet. Closed tears, chipping, and creasing along edges of dust-jacket. Spine partly missing at center. Corners of DJ taped. Gold lettering to spine slightly faded. Minor creasing to head of spine, and covers slightly bowed. Text in German. Dust-jacket in overall poor to fair, binding in good+, interior in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Death In Venice. Translated by H.T. Lowe-Porter

London: Martin Secker, 1928., 1928. First UK Edition thus. 8vo.; pp.271. Publisher's faded green cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper, heavily sunned to spine. In a good example of the scarce dustwrapper, darkened to spine with some marginal chipping and loss to spine ends and corners with what appears to be some waterstaining to the spine area. Perhaps not the best copy we've seen of this scarce and highly impressive novel, but nevertheless an acceptable copy that shows rather better than it sounds. The Nobel-Prize winning author's famous novella, basis for Luchino Visconti's 1971 Oscar-nominated movie starring Dirk Bogarde.
