        Lady Chatterley's Lover

Privately Printed in Paris, in 1928. 8vo. This hardback copy of D. H. Lawrence's literary classic 'Lady Chatterley's Lover', is believed to be one of the first pirate copies of the book which triggered such scandal when it was written. This pirated version is very similar to the original, with the same beige boards, lacking only the insignia, and with a yellow dustjacket rather than the cream one of the original first edition. Encased in a plain yellow dustjacket in order to hide the title of the book, it would have been smuggled into England from Paris, and was printed the same year as the original 1st, of which only 1000 were printed, and is number 1148 of 1500 copies. The book and dustjacket are both in Fine condition, with just the slightest damage to the bottom of the dustjacket on the rear of the book, where it looks like a sticker might once have been affixed and removed, taking the top layer of the jacket material with it. There is also a small tear to the top of the spine, on both the jacket and the book, and some minor bumping to the corner and spine ends of the book. Apart from these minor flaws both the jacket and book are in beautiful condition, with the uncut pages bright and clean. This lovely book would be a superb addition to any collection.

The Front Page (Photographs from the 1928 Broadway stage premiere)

N.p.: N.p., 1928. Two vintage oversize photographs from the first stage production of "The Front Page" in 1928, showing two different trio shots of the reporters who grace the majority of the play. The first photo, a double weight 8 x 10 by Florence Vandamm with her blindstamped name on the recto, shows Lee Tracy (later played by Rosalind Russell onscreen), Osgood Perkins, and Frances Fuller. The second, a single weight oversize 11 x 14, uncredited but by White Studios in New York City, shows the star Walter Baldwin (later played by Cary Grant onscreen), Osgood Perkins, and Lee Tracy. Both photographs with numerous notations and stamps on the verso. Excessively rare photographs from the first staging of the play that made Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur famous. The play would be published the same year in book form by Covici-Friede, and was the basis for three films: The Front Page" in 1931 with Adolphe Menjou and Pat O'Brien, "The Front Page" in 1974 with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, and most famously, the classic screwball comedy "His Girl Friday," with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in 1940.

        Arabische Reise.

No place, 1927-1928. - Large 8vo (172 x 240 mm). Scrapbook containing clippings of the newspaper series "Arabische Reise" and other articles on Arabia, along with various illustrations and music. 80 pp., each sheet covered on one side with coloured paper or cloth. Contemp. green library cloth with cover label. Original clippings of Muhammad Asad's "Arabian Journey", serialized in the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" in 1927, and including other early newspaper articles by Asad (as well as an essay by Hermann Hesse). The handsome album, apparently assembled by a German or Swiss traveller, Georg Hartmann (whose ownership is inscribed on the pastedown and initialled to the upper cover), is decorated with numerous illustrations cut from contemporary magazines, including several showing camel-mounted bedouins in the desert, a view of Mecca, portraits of Abdul Aziz ibn Saud, the muezzin's call to prayer (arranged in musical notes), and the original business wrapping paper of the Istanbul confectioner Hajji Bekir, whom Hartmann seems to have visited during a 1928 visit to Turkey. On the pastedown, Hartmann has entered a table of contents (with a - possibly slightly later - portrait of Ibn Saud as King). - Muhammad Asad (previously, Leopold Weiss) was a leading traveller and journalist of the 20th century who, in 1926, converted to Islam from Judaism, eventually becoming a diplomat for Pakistan and a best-selling author. His enthusiasm for Wahhabism is evident from these early travel reports from the Arabian Peninsula, where Ibn Saud had just captured Mecca and proclaimed independence in the Hejaz and Nejd, but had not yet united his dominions into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Indeed, Asad's feature on Ibn Saud (also included here) constitutes nothing less than a hagiographic portrait of the ideal ruler, and his incisive writings on Islam aim to familiarize western audiences with what he perceived as the purest and truest form of the religion he had come to embrace, criticizing occidental images of the Muslim faith gleaned from the Ottoman or Persian tradition, which he viewed as corruptions.         Metropolis in "La Petite Illustration"

Paris: Imp. de l'Illustration, 1928. About Fine in photo illustrated wrappers, with 20 sepia-toned stills from Fritz Lang's 1927 masterpiece. La Petite Illustration was a weekly magazine that published extended reviews of new films in Paris along with novels and poetry. This special 12-page issue (dated March 3, 1928) is dedicated entirely to Lang's "Metropolis." The French premiere of the film was on October 14th, 1927, screened at L'Imperial for three months. In March of 1928, the film had a short one-week revival at the same theater; this issue of La Petite Illustration was printed in conjunction with the event, with extraordinary still images throughout. A glimpse into the first French reaction to the most expensive and ambitious film of the Silent era, one that has come to represent visually nothing less than Europe in the 1920s in terms of Expressionism, Art Deco, Modernism, utopian/dystopian philosophy, and socialism. 10 pages, self-wrappers, saddle-stitched, 8 x 11.75 inches.         William Gropper 56 Zeichnungen fun Ratn-Farband

editions le triangle Paris, Paris, France 1928 - Title and table of contents in Yiddish. William Victor "Bill" Gropper (Dec. 3, 1897 - Jan. 3, 1977) was a U.S. cartoonist, painter, lithographer, and muralist. A committed radical, he is best known for the political work which he contributed to such left wing publications as The Revolutionary Age, The Liberator, The New Masses, The Worker, and The Morning Freiheit. Gropper was born to Harry and Jenny Gropper in New York City, the eldest of 6 children. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Romania and Ukraine, who were both employed in the city's garment industry, living in poverty on New York's Lower East Side. His mother worked hard sewing piecework at home. His father was university-educated and fluent in 8 languages, but was unable to find employment in America in a field for which he was suited. This failure of the American economic system to make proper use of his father's talents doubtlessly contributed to William Gropper's lifelong antipathy to capitalism. Gropper's alienation was accentuated when on March 24, 1911 he lost a favorite aunt in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, in which 146 worked burned to death or jumped to their deaths because they were unable to flee the burning sweatshop since the doors were locks by the employers. At age 6 Gropper took chalk to the sidewalks, decorating the concrete with elaborate picture stories of cowboys and Indians that extended around the block. As a child on the way to school, Bill used to lug bundles of his mother's piecework sewing to the sweatshops by which she was employed. At age 13, Gropper took his first art instruction at the radical Ferrer School, where he studied under George Bellows and Robert Henri. In 1913, Bill graduated from public school, earning a medal in art and a scholarship to the National Academy of Design. He refused to conform at the academy, however, and was subsequently expelled. He attempted to attend High School that fall, but finances prevented his attendance and he was forced to seek work to help support his family. He worked as an assistant in a clothing store, earning $5 a week. In 1915, Bill showed a portfolio of his work to Frank Parsons, the head of the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts. The work so impressed Parsons that Gropper was offered a scholarship to the school. Gropper continued to work reduced hours for reduced wages in the clothing store while he continued his artistic education. In the subsequent two years, Bill gained recognition and awards for his work. In 1917, Gropper was offered a position on the staff of the New York Tribune, where over the next several years he earned a steady income doing drawings for the paper's special Sunday feature articles. At this time, the politically radical Gropper was brought into the orbit of original and innovative artists around the left wing New York monthly, The Masses. After The Masses was banned from the US Mail in 1917, due to its unflinching anti-militarism, Gropper joined artists like Robert Minor, Maurice Becker, Art Young, Lydia Gibson, Hugo Gellert, and Boardman Robinson in contributing to its successor, The Liberator. Gropper also contributed his art to The Revolutionary Age, a revolutionary socialist weekly edited by Louis C. Fraina and (in later issues) John Reed, a publication which narrowly predated the establishment of the American Communist Party, as well as to The Rebel Worker, a magazine of the Industrial Workers of the World, an anarcho-syndicalist union. In 1920 Gropper went to Cuba briefly as an oiler on a United Fruit Company freight boat. He left the ship in Cuba and spent some time there observing life and working as a supervisor on a railroad construction detail. He was forced to return home sooner than expected, however, owing to the terminal illness of his father. . . [Attributes: Soft Cover]

The Collected Poems of D. H. Lawrence

London: Martin Secker 1928 - Two volumes. First edition, first printing. Publisher's dark brown cloth, lettered in gilt, green top stains; in the original cream dust jackets, lettered in brown. Books about fine, with some minor offsetting to the free endpapers, else fine; unclipped dust jackets, with some light wear and a few short closed tears to the extremities, some toning to the spines, minor chips to the spine ends, Vol. II with a closed tear to the rear flap fold, a few light spots of minor soiling to the otherwise bright panels. Overall, a near fine set in the fragile dust jackets. Roberts A43a. The Collected Poems of D.H. Lawrence is a two volume anthology of Lawrence's poetical works. The first volume contains Lawrence's rhyming poetry and includes "Twilight," "Tarantella," "Lilies in the Fire," and "Snap-Dragon," while the second volume collects his un-rhyming poems, including "A Bad Beginning," "Moonrise," "Paradise Re-Entered," and "Frost Flowers," among others. In his preface, Lawrence explained that he "tried to establish a chronological order, because many of the poems are so personal that, in their fragmentary fashion, they make up a biography of an emotional and inner life they need the order of time, as that is the order of experience." Accordingly, The Collected Poems of D.H. Lawrence can be viewed as much a poetic memoir as a compendium of verse. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
