The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club

Ernest Benn, 1928. 1st edition. Hardcover. Near fine black boards with orange lettering and rule to front and spine, with near fine, clean pages and endpapers. Binding tight and square. A very nice copy indeed of the fourth outing for Lord Peter Wimsey, and quite scarce in this condition. Included is a postcard signed by the author, on the back of a promotional puff for her Lord Peter Wimsey Detective Comedy, Busman's Honeymoon, at the Comedy Theatre, Haymarket, with her typed message of 9th February 1937 to Miss E. Tayler of Bath, 'Dear Miss Tayler, I fear I can not give you any date of the publication of the novel which has been postponed so as not to interfere with the run of the Play. Yours faithfully'. The novel was presumably In The Teeth Of The Evidence. Sayers's signature on a book or piece of ephemera is surprisingly scarce.

Harrap & Co., Ltd., [1928].First trade edition. Quarto (9 13/16 x 7 1/2 inches; 250 x 191 mm.). 102, [1], [1, blank] pp. Eight color plates and thirty drawings in black and white.Publisher's green cloth pictorially stamped in gilt on front cover and lettered in gilt on spine. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Pictorial endpapers. A near fine copy in the original color pictorial dust jacket with just a few small edge chips.By 1928, the traditional Rackham book - freely and lavishly illustrated, and lushly produced - was, culturally no longer in fashion nor financially feasible. Artistically, Rackham's work was being overshadowed by a younger generation. Publisher George Harrap stepped in, took up the challenge, and, through production economies, published a new kind of Rackham book. But if the volumes were not as spectacular as in the past, the artwork was no less impressive.Latimore and Haskell, pp. 63-64. Riall, pp. 164-165.

Peace in Our Time: Addresses on Europe and the Empire [ Stated First Edition, Inscribed and Signed by Austen Chamberlain ]

Philip Allan & Co. Ltd., London 1928 - A very good copy of the stated first (1928) hard cover edition, lacking a dust-jacket. Inscribed and signed on the front free edpaper: "To Evan Morgan / With all good wishes / from / Austen Chamberlain / Cardiff / Nov. 28th 1930." Evan [Frederic] Morgan was the 2nd Viscount Tredegar (1893 - 1949), a noted eccentric. The text of the book is wholly unmarked, pristine, and the green cloth with gilt lettering on the spine is remarkably bright and fresh in appearance. There is a bit of foxing/age-toning to the endpapers, the first few/last pages, and the page edges of the volume: unobtrusive. The book came to us from the library of a late local scholar of the world peace movements, and has a Highgate Auctions card laid in, which may indicate how he obtained this and other rare items from this period. A beautiful copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Southern Pacific Lines follow the trails blazed by the pioneers. The pioneers chose the best natural routes. The routes today offer not only great natural geographic advantages for the flow of travel and commerce but also inspiring traditions...

Southern Pacific.. Copyright 1928.. Color pictographic / pictorial map, 23 1/4 x 32 inches on sheet size 25 1/4 x 33 1/4 inches. Centerfold, some soft creases from rolling, some light soiling and light dampstaining (only visible in outer margins). Southern Pacific's Shasta Route, Overland Route, Golden State Route and Sunset Route are marked, "following the trails of the pioneers, they are the best natural routes to the land of scenery and romance." The left and right borders are composed of vignette illustrations of historical events starting with "1862 President Lincoln signs Pacific Railway Act" to "Today Southern Pacific still building and serving." Four vignette illustrations along the upper edge relate to the four routes. The railroad runs as far south as Mexico City.         Persian Pictures. With a Preface by Sir E. Denison Ross.

London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1928. - FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY BELL'S SISTER. Octavo, pp.198. Bound in publisher's green cloth with title and author's name in gilt lettering to spine, with a decorative gilt border at endcaps. In a simple cream dustjacket with book details printed in black to front of jacket, with an illustration of a (presumably) Persian man on horseback, shooting a bow and arrow. Dustjacket also features a small review/description reading 'This book of travellers' tales, in every way worthy to rank with Kinglake's EOTHEN, was written at the age of 26, after her first visit to the East. It fills the gap of two years in her letters and also sets out the reasons for the fascination which that romantic part of the world always had for her. It is a book full of charm and shrewd observation.' Cloth boards in excellent condition, with limited signs of wear, one faint mark to rear board, all corners bumped, endcaps very slightly pushed, gilt lettering is a little dulled, top edge gilt, fore edge shows spotting, personal stamp of Sir Percy Cox, one of the major figures in the creation of Iraq, attractively mounted to pastedown. Text block very clean throughout, excepting some minor browning toward very first and final few leaves. Inscription reads, 'To Sir Percy Cox, With much gratitude. Florence Bell, 1928'. Dustjacket in like condition, with some dustiness, discolouration at spine, darkened along creases, with some negligible chips (primarily at spine), flaps very clean. An excellent copy. The book's ownership has imparted it with a fascinating legacy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LEST YE DIE: A STORY FROM THE PAST OR OF THE FUTURE.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1928 - Octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii-xi [xii-xiv] 1-281 [282: blank], original green cloth, front and spine panels stamped in brown, fore-edge untrimmed. First U.S. edition. One of the more important scientific romances of the 1920s, being a rewritten and retitled version of THEODORE SAVAGE: A STORY OF THE PAST OR THE FUTURE (1922). This catastrophe novel ". bitterly depicts a future war in whose aftermath the people of the UK, driven out of the cities, revert to superstitious barbarism. The ironically named protagonist lives to a great age in a small village full of savages who think of pre- collapse artifacts as obscene. Hamilton is one of the first - - and among the darkest -- of those UK novelists whose vision of things was shaped by WWI, which they saw as foretelling the end of civilization." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), pp. 537-38. "A particularly effective and chilling version of the theme that dominates British speculative fiction between the wars." - Anatomy of Wonder (1995) 2-48. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-484.
