        Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The

1928. first edition. Arthur Rackham Awakens Sleepy Hollow[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. IRVING, Washington. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. London: George G. Harrap & Co., Ltd., [1928].First trade edition. Quarto (9 13/16 x 7 1/2 inches; 250 x 191 mm.). 102, [1], [1, blank] pp. Eight color plates and thirty drawings in black and white.Publisher's green cloth pictorially stamped in gilt on front cover and lettered in gilt on spine. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Pictorial endpapers. A near fine copy in the original color pictorial dust jacket with just a few small edge chips.By 1928, the traditional Rackham book - freely and lavishly illustrated, and lushly produced - was, culturally no longer in fashion nor financially feasible. Artistically, Rackham's work was being overshadowed by a younger generation. Publisher George Harrap stepped in, took up the challenge, and, through production economies, published a new kind of Rackham book. But if the volumes were not as spectacular as in the past, the artwork was no less impressive.Latimore and Haskell, pp. 63-64. Riall, pp. 164-165.

Peace in Our Time: Addresses on Europe and the Empire [ Stated First Edition, Inscribed and Signed by Austen Chamberlain ]

Philip Allan & Co. Ltd., London 1928 - A very good copy of the stated first (1928) hard cover edition, lacking a dust-jacket. Inscribed and signed on the front free edpaper: "To Evan Morgan / With all good wishes / from / Austen Chamberlain / Cardiff / Nov. 28th 1930." Evan [Frederic] Morgan was the 2nd Viscount Tredegar (1893 - 1949), a noted eccentric. The text of the book is wholly unmarked, pristine, and the green cloth with gilt lettering on the spine is remarkably bright and fresh in appearance. There is a bit of foxing/age-toning to the endpapers, the first few/last pages, and the page edges of the volume: unobtrusive. The book came to us from the library of a late local scholar of the world peace movements, and has a Highgate Auctions card laid in, which may indicate how he obtained this and other rare items from this period. A beautiful copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Color map, 27 1/2 x 20 inches (69 x 51 cm) on sheet 31 x 21 cm, folding as issued to 8 x 4 inches, with original red paper (watered silk patterned) envelope.         Persian Pictures. With a Preface by Sir E. Denison Ross.

London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1928. - FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY BELL'S SISTER. Octavo, pp.198. Bound in publisher's green cloth with title and author's name in gilt lettering to spine, with a decorative gilt border at endcaps. In a simple cream dustjacket with book details printed in black to front of jacket, with an illustration of a (presumably) Persian man on horseback, shooting a bow and arrow. Dustjacket also features a small review/description reading 'This book of travellers' tales, in every way worthy to rank with Kinglake's EOTHEN, was written at the age of 26, after her first visit to the East. It fills the gap of two years in her letters and also sets out the reasons for the fascination which that romantic part of the world always had for her. It is a book full of charm and shrewd observation.' Cloth boards in excellent condition, with limited signs of wear, one faint mark to rear board, all corners bumped, endcaps very slightly pushed, gilt lettering is a little dulled, top edge gilt, fore edge shows spotting, personal stamp of Sir Percy Cox, one of the major figures in the creation of Iraq, attractively mounted to pastedown. Text block very clean throughout, excepting some minor browning toward very first and final few leaves. Inscription reads, 'To Sir Percy Cox, With much gratitude. Florence Bell, 1928'. Dustjacket in like condition, with some dustiness, discolouration at spine, darkened along creases, with some negligible chips (primarily at spine), flaps very clean. An excellent copy. The book's ownership has imparted it with a fascinating legacy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

LIVES OF THE NOBLE GRECIANS AND ROMANES, Compared Together by that Grave and Learned Philosopher & Historiographer, Plutarke of Chæronea: Translated out of Greek in to French by James Amyot.and out of French into Englishe by Thomas North

Stratford-Upon-Avon The Shakespeare Head Press for Basil Blackwell 1928 - 8 volumes. FIRST SHAKESPEARE HEAD PRINTING, A LIMITED EDITION, and one of only 500 copies for sale, numbered by hand in Vol. I. Decorations throughout consisting of portraits within headpieces by Thomas Lowinsky. Large 8vo, publisher's original black cloth, the spines with gilt ruled bands as those on a leather binding, gilt lettering in three compartments, t.e.g. A very handsome, as pristine set in unusually fine condition, quite beautifully preserved, prelims with only a touch of the usual spotting and not even really worth mentioning. The cloth is vivid dark black with bright gilt. Volume I with the Observer Sunday review for the edition dated November 11, 1928 neatly tipped to the front endleaves, and with the 1928 owner's neat calligraphed signature and bookplates to the free-fly. A superb set rarely found is such beautiful conditon. RARE FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE OF THE SHAKESPEARE HEAD PLUTARCH, ONE OF ONLY 500 COPIES SIGNED FOR SALE. This edition was printed from the first edition of 1579. Lowinsky's portrait head-pieces are taken so far as possible from authentic originals. A handsomely printed set of North's classic translation. In this monumental historical work, Plutarch relates the lives of the historically important Greeks and Romans of ancient times. His studies are revered as among the most important and beautiful of all classical writings . The author’s object is to bring out the moral character in each case, rather than to relate the political events of the time; in essence, at times he will distort the truth in order to exemplify virtue or vice. Nonetheless, he is as reliable as the sources he uses, and very valuable as a historical resource. Thomas North’s translation of Plutarch’s LIVES is one of the most famous. His prose considered by many to be "incomparable. [his] achievement in narrative prose is only less signal than Shakespeare's in dramatic verse. North's Plutarch is also well-known as a primary source for the plots of Shakespeare's classical plays and for numerous passages in the non-Roman ones, and he relied almost exclusively on it for the historical background of ancient Rome. Thus it is a very fitting work for the Shakespeare Head Press to have undertaken at Stratford-Upon-Avon. Of this edition perhaps the contemporary review from the Observer sums it up best- "In its stately form and completeness of contents this edition stands alone in our generation. The posthumous vicissitudes of North's genius amongst the publishers make a singular episode in our bibliographical history. Mr. Blackwell gives us a great deal more of North than has been available to the general reader since Pepys's time." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

FIRST & ONLY EDITION. AUTHOR'S SIGNED FIRST & ONLY LIMITED EDITION OF 765 COPIES . FIRST & ONLY LIMITED EDITION OF 765 SETS ** A monumental work, well illustrated study on the trade route countries of Central Asia. Always a rare set when complete. * "With descriptive lists of antiques by F.H. Andrews & F.M.G. Lorimer; & appendices by J. Allan et al." Volume 1, 2: text, 1159 pages, with text illustrations. Vol. 3: 137 plates, 59 plans. Vol. 4: 51 color folding maps in matching rose cloth case, with index tabs. ******* M. AUREL STEINS PERSONAL COPY: This is a very nice copy which was likely owned by the author as hia personal letter was found used as a book mark in one of the volumes. The letter is 19 x 25.5 cm., plain toned white paper, written by Sir Aurel Stein using a very wide fountain pen and blue ink. The letter is in remarkable condition and has been folded twice, but now is quite flat and solid. * WITH A VERY RARE HOLOGRAPHIC LETTER FROM AUREL STEIN: "At Highbroom, Ewhurst, Guilford: February 15, 1925 Dear Sirs, Thanks for your letter of the 9th inst. and the account rendered with it. I note in the account of entry of 10/6 charged for the Return of Income Tax for the years 1922-3 and 1923-4. As I was absent from the United Kingdom during the whole of these financial years, no Income Tax was due from the royalties received in these years on my behalf. I accordingly request the favour of an explanation as to how this charge arises against my account, and hope for a refund of the amount. Yours faithfully A. Stein" * Perhaps Aurel Stein got his reply from the Income Tax office and or this was a copy of his letter. It was found lost as a "book mark" found in this set. A lovely insight to Stein, and his thoughts on how the British government had wrongly charged him Income Tax. A lovely holographic letter, written in pen and ink, in his usual and steady hand. Stein letters are rare and seldom found on the market. ******** FIRST & ONLY LIMITED EDITION OF 765 COPIES. We understand that this set was issued in a Limited Edition of only 765 complete copies, the balance of 250 sets were incomplete as they lacked 48 maps. * THE MAPS AND MAP BOX VOLUME: The matching map box is also in bound in rose cloth, 25.5 x 34 cm., and is 5 cm. thick. There is some minor and usual wear to the upper and lower part of the hinged flap, with some old mends. The contents consist of 47 maps each with white index tabs, plus 4 other maps index tabs: "A,B,C,D," and the index, complete as issued. **** CONDITION: This is the brightest and freshest copy we have ever had in our 45 years of tenure. The cloth of the main three volumes is nearly flawless, with bright rose color, brilliant gold stamping on the spines and front covers. There is no scuffing whatsoever, and the head/tails of the spines are fresh with a few of the usual wrinkles expected. The joints are strong, tight and the book appears to be by and large unused. There are a few bumped corners: vol. 1: the front upper right corner has a very small bump; vol. 2: faint and very tiny hint of a bump on front lower right, else none; vol. 3: front right and left, and rear corners tiny bump, front lower right a larger bump, please see scans posted to our website for photographs. * DUST JACKETS: The set of three volumes all have the original dust jackets each protected in mylar covers. There was some of the usual wear to the unprotected dust jackets, and some restoration with matching paper was performed from the inside to stabilize the tears and small missing pieces. Overall the jackets are nice with some repairs to the upper and lower spine as well as corners and a few other spots here and there. Finding this set with the dust jacket is exceptionally rare and unusual. The set if ever found most always lacks the dust jackets. *** . * BIBLIOGRAPHY: Stein 1862-1943.
