The Passion of Joan of Arc [La passion de Jeanne d'Arc] (Original double weight photograph from the 1928 film)

Paris: Studio Soulat-Boussus, 1928. Vintage double weight photograph from the set of the 1928 film. Shot by Jean Soulat and Mauric Boussus of Studio Soulat-Boussus in Paris, with respective stamps on the verso. An excessively rare photograph from Dreyer's masterpiece, capturing Maria Falconetti in what one could accurately described as "in character." Franconetti became a stage actress in Paris in 1918, and had appeared in only one other film. For this role, today still considered one of the most astonishing performances ever committed to celluloid, director Dreyer reputedly pushed her to the brink of emotional collapse. It was to be her final film role, after which she returned to producing and starring in light stage comedies, including work at the Comedie-Francais in Paris. In 1946, having fled to South America during World War II, and having suffered a lifetime of mental illness, she committed suicide in Brazil. 6.5 x 8.75 inches (16.5 x 22.5 cm). In an archival mat. Fine.

Ernest Benn, 1928. 1st edition. Hardcover. Near fine black boards with orange lettering and rule to front and spine, with near fine, clean pages and endpapers. Binding tight and square. A very nice copy indeed of the fourth outing for Lord Peter Wimsey, and quite scarce in this condition. Included is a postcard signed by the author, on the back of a promotional puff for her Lord Peter Wimsey Detective Comedy, Busman's Honeymoon, at the Comedy Theatre, Haymarket, with her typed message of 9th February 1937 to Miss E. Tayler of Bath, 'Dear Miss Tayler, I fear I can not give you any date of the publication of the novel which has been postponed so as not to interfere with the run of the Play. Yours faithfully'. The novel was presumably In The Teeth Of The Evidence. Sayers's signature on a book or piece of ephemera is surprisingly scarce.

Harrap & Co., Ltd., [1928].First trade edition. Quarto (9 13/16 x 7 1/2 inches; 250 x 191 mm.). 102, [1], [1, blank] pp. Eight color plates and thirty drawings in black and white.Publisher's green cloth pictorially stamped in gilt on front cover and lettered in gilt on spine. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Pictorial endpapers. A near fine copy in the original color pictorial dust jacket with just a few small edge chips.By 1928, the traditional Rackham book - freely and lavishly illustrated, and lushly produced - was, culturally no longer in fashion nor financially feasible. Artistically, Rackham's work was being overshadowed by a younger generation. Publisher George Harrap stepped in, took up the challenge, and, through production economies, published a new kind of Rackham book. But if the volumes were not as spectacular as in the past, the artwork was no less impressive.Latimore and Haskell, pp. 63-64. Riall, pp. 164-165.

        Original drawing: Mystere Laic

1928 - COCTEAU, Jean. “Le Mystère Laic” [Paris], 1928. Original pen-and-ink design for a title page, drawn on cream wove stock measuring 8 by 10 inches; handsomely framed, entire piece measures 14 by 18 inches. $7200.Cocteau’s original design for the title page of Le Mystère Laic (The Secular Mystery), his treatise on the art of de Chirico. This original design was produced by Cocteau as a title page for his Le Mystère Laic, “a fine treatise on the art of the Italian painter Giorgio de Chirico… In this work Cocteau extended himself into the area of aesthetic theory that he had explored in Le Coq and his exegesis of Picasso… De Chirico was grateful for Cocteau’s understanding and support and some years later did a series of fine lithographs for Cocteau’s book Mythologie” (Emboden, 44). See The Artist and the Book 56. From the collection of George Verdak, who danced with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo from 1942-1951â€" later became Artistic Director of the Indianapolis Ballet Theater and chairman of the Dance Department at Butler University. Accompanied by a copy of the first edition of Cocteau’s Le Mystere Laic (The Secular Mystery), with five drawings by Giorgio de Chirico, one of 3000 numbered copies. Cocteau’s design does not appear in the final version of the book, though the first copy in the limitation was issued with an original drawing by Cocteau, most likely from the same series from which this drawing comes. Light stain to top margin, not affecting drawing. A splendid original drawing, larger than most. [Attributes: First Edition]

Peace in Our Time: Addresses on Europe and the Empire [ Stated First Edition, Inscribed and Signed by Austen Chamberlain ]

Philip Allan & Co. Ltd., London 1928 - A very good copy of the stated first (1928) hard cover edition, lacking a dust-jacket. Inscribed and signed on the front free edpaper: "To Evan Morgan / With all good wishes / from / Austen Chamberlain / Cardiff / Nov. 28th 1930." Evan [Frederic] Morgan was the 2nd Viscount Tredegar (1893 - 1949), a noted eccentric. The text of the book is wholly unmarked, pristine, and the green cloth with gilt lettering on the spine is remarkably bright and fresh in appearance. There is a bit of foxing/age-toning to the endpapers, the first few/last pages, and the page edges of the volume: unobtrusive. The book came to us from the library of a late local scholar of the world peace movements, and has a Highgate Auctions card laid in, which may indicate how he obtained this and other rare items from this period. A beautiful copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
