Oeuvre originale

[Scrapbook]: Penn State: Alpha Gamma Rho

State College, Pennsylvania. 1928. Oblong folio. Measuring 11" x 14". String-tied brown suede over paper boards with a Penn State emblem on the front board. Contains ephemera and 200 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.75" x 2" and 7" x 9.5", some with captions. Very good album with worn edges and some small tears with near fine photographs.A scrapbook kept by Ray O. Freudenberger while he was beginning his college education at Penn State University in 1928. During his time at the university he was a part of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity as well as involved in numerous sports teams and clubs. The album begins with a large photograph of the original fraternity house (which was destroyed by fire in 1966, and rebuilt in 1968). This is followed by another large photo showing a group of fraternity men and their dates posed on the steps of the house. The following pages are full of autographs and messages from his fraternity brothers and other classmates which say things like, "My old pal! Let's roll a few games," and "O really do remember from one house party to another." The photographs show school events; track meets and football games, as well as dances and classroom photos. One section shows an R.O.T.C. group at attention in full uniform with blimps flying overhead. Freudenberger photographed the campus in various seasons including a large section of the campus in the winter of 1928. There are also photos of a University building during construction. Many of the photos show Freudenberger and his fraternity brothers around campus, at their house, and with dates before dances.Freudenberger was interested in the University's sports programs. He participated in some, and was also the manager of the men's basketball team. One section shows clippings of the football team and their schedule for the year of 1928. Additionally there are photographs and clippings from the boxing, track, rugby, and wrestling teams. The Alpha Gamma Rho house is shown in large photos featuring the interior and exterior, the lounge with fireplace, dining area, and formal living room. The final pages of the album are full of ticket stubs, programs, letters, and dance cards from his freshman year at Penn State. These include the winter sports schedules, a card announcing his admission to the freshman class, and Christmas cards from friends. Our research indicated he was living in the Pittsburgh area in 1941 and worked as an electric line engineer. An extensive look at the freshman year of a young man at Penn State University in 1928 with heavy emphasis on sports. .

A collection of seven large original watercolours, all illustrations for children's stories

N.d. [c. 1928]. Measuring c. 24cm x 19cm (image size) with very wide margins. A collection of seven large original watercolours, all illustrations for children's stories. They are most attractive, and fully finished designs, each signed by the artist, and one with an additional pen and ink drawing in the wide margins. The watercolours have been kept in original paper folders and the colours are fresh and bright. Some watercolour strokes, and pen and ink strokes in the margins, and pin holes in the blank corners. Several of the folders bear the pencil name Miss Cockroft, and there is an accompanying letter dated 1928, and addressed to her from the editor of the Halifax Courier with reference to her "delightful little stories." Oliove Wood's watercolours were painted to illustrate these children's tales. Olive Wood (fl. 1914-1933) was a miniature painter and illustrator of children's books. She trained at the Clapham and Camberwell Schools of Art and lived and worked in Dulwich Village, London. She exhibited illustrations and pen and ink page designs at the Royal Academy and at the Society of Women Artists. Her early designs incorporate art nouveau motifs. Later, she contributed illustrations to collections of children's stories and poetry, and to popular annuals such as Bo-Peep Annual and Little Folks. Miss Edith Cockroft was appointed as infant's teacher at Addingham School, Yorkshire in 1926 and remained in post there for 38 years. There are a number of examples of Olive Wood's work in the V & A, and she was clearly a gifted and imaginative artist. . Very Good. 1928.

Autograph Letter, signed, to the literary agent, Major Pond, on Benêt's "John Brown's Body" and a possible lecture series under Pond's management

[New York] 1928 - 4 pp., on stationery of "Hotel Le Marquis". 8vo. Benêt on John Brown: "I tried to do my best with him?". Fascinating letter, written soon after the publication of Benêt's most enduring poem, JOHN BROWN'S BODY (1928), to America's most eminent literary agent of the day, Major Pond. "Thank you very much indeed for your interesting letter. I am particularly glad that someone who was actually brought up in the John Brown atmosphere, as you were, would have been in any way satisfied with the reconstruction I attempted of the period -- and of the character of that most contradictory man. I tried to do my best with him -- but one never knows and your letter gave me great pleasure. "I have given a couple of readings from the poem to small audiences - and not under the management of any lecture bureau. And, if I were going to do that thing at all, it goes without saying that I would be much more interested in a proposition from yourself than from anyone else. But, to be perfectly frank, I am not going to do it at all unless I have to. I am not a good lecturer - my voice does not carry particularly - and while I enjoy reading my verse, it's pretty tiring to do it more than once in every so often. However I appreciate your thinking of me in this connection -- and, as I say, if it ever did seem advisable for me to do anything of the sort, I'd much rather do it under your management ?". Two perforations in upper left corner, legibility unaffected 4 pp., on stationery of "Hotel Le Marquis". 8vo

        The Scarlet Pimpernel.

8vo., original red cloth with slightly creased and worn dust wrapper. Slits in front free endpaper, previously cut to mount inscribed postcard, now repaired. A very good copy. Reprint, inscribed by Baroness Orczy to Frederick Bason, "To Frederick Bason with kind wishes from the author Emmuska Orczy May 18 1928." Also with a postcard of the author, again inscribed to Frederick Bason tipped into the front free endpaper. Mr Bason has written on the spine of the dustwrapper in tiny letters "Autographed Copy Presented by the Authoress to me. May 1928." A charming association copy inscribed from Baroness Orczy to Fred Bason the "cockney bookseller". Born in the East End of London in 1908, Bason started selling books from a barrow at the age of fifteen. His pursuit of autographs led to friendships with a number of famous writers, eventually gaining celebrity in his own right for his colourful life and writings. The first volume of his entertaining diary contains three mentions of Baroness Orczy. In December 1928 he notes receiving a Christmas card from her, and in 1931 (date not noted) he writes "Baroness Orczy is coming to tea next week - but then again she may not." The third entry from 1936 "wrote to Baroness Orczy accepting invite" suggests their acquaintance lasted many years.

The Lonesomest Doll. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1928. First edition illustrated by Rackham, published only in America. Octavo (8 5/16 x6 1/8 in; 212 x 155 mm). [8]. 80, [1], [3, blank] pp. Title page, frontispiece and two full page illustrations in rose and greenish-blue, twenty-six black and white drawings. Original tan cloth, pictorially stamped in colors. Small "1951" postage stamp on front free-endpaper. A near fine copy."The text is printed on a poor and brittle paper, so it is a difficult title to find in good condition" (Riall)."There is no more famous illustrator of children's books in the entire world than Arthur Rackham. Indeed, there are many people who make a point of buying every Rackham book regardless of subject, merely for the sake of the pictures. For, unlike that of many illustrators, Mr. Rackham's work appeals equally to the child and the adult, delighting the young reader by its whimsical humor and multitude of perfectly executed details, and adults by its beauty and artistry. In 'The Lonesomest Doll' Mr. Rackham has found an unusually appealing theme, and he has contributed a series of thirty-one of his unique illustrations (four in color), making a volume that should take its place as one of the finest gift books of the year. Miss Brown's charming story of the proud little queen and her beautiful lonesome doll has held a place for many years among the favorite books of the younger readers, and this new and beautiful edition should make it many new friends."
