The Money Game. How to Play it. A New Instrument of Economic Education

      J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd, London & Toronto 1928 - First edition, second imprint. Presentation copy, inscribed by Angell to the Danish journalist, Peter Jerndorff-Jessen. In publisher's blue cloth with gilt stamp on front panel and gilt ornaments and title on spine. (2), viii, (6), 168, (2) p. Inscribed copy of The Money Game, designed by the Nobel laureate Norman Angell. The book explains how to play the game and gives two optional supplementary games. It contains the game box with 150 original colour money cards, 100 industry playing cards divided into 10 sets, 2 insurance or joker cards, and 8 unused score sheets. Each of the games intended to educate about monetary and banking systems and are based around the premise of an engineer shipwrecked on an island with limited source of gold, populated by natives unfamiliar with the concept of money. In the first game one player represents the engineer, who wants to buy machine parts, the others, the islanders, own these parts from earlier shipwrecks. The cost of the parts are increasing as the islanders want to get as much of money as they can. The winner is who "breaks" the engineer by holding more notes than he can cover with his supply of gold. In the second game the islanders are purchasing goods produced by the engineer by bidding and the aim is the collect the most merchandise. In the third game the engineer becomes a financier who lends money to the islanders to build a complete enterprise (a set of 10 cards), and the islanders bargain with amongst themselves. The first copyright of the game is dated back to 1912, but the game became very popular only after its introduction in the US in 1927. The first "bookcase" edition was published in November 1928, and and it was reprinted in already in December. Sir Norman Angell (1872-1967) was a British economist, a prolific writer, Member of the Parliament for the Labour Party, and a Nobel laureate, awarded with the Peace Prize in 1933. Light wear to binding. One page loose. With the complete, original set of game pieces and cards, in excellent condition. The original game box bound to the rear of the book. Overall in near-fine condition. In publisher's blue cloth with gilt stamp on front panel and gilt ornaments and title on spine First edition, second imprint. Presentation copy, inscribed by Angell to the Danish journalist, Peter Jerndorff-Jessen. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Golden Age [and] Dream Days With Illustrations and Decorations by Ernest A Shepard

London: John Lane, The Bodley Head Limited, [1928 & 1930]. 2 vols., 8vo, xi, 167; xii, 168 pp. with 57 plates and text illustrations and numerous decorations by Shepard. Original marbled boards backed in gilt-lettered vellum, preserved in modern orange cloth double slipcase. Some rubbing along edges; free endpapers discolored by paste offset; overall a crisp set. First editions thus; first published in 1895 and 1898. #33 and #183 of 275 large-paper copies signed by both Grahame and Shepard. These two collections of tales, most of them about the escapades of five brothers and sisters living in a large country house, made Kenneth Grahame famous as a writer for and about children, to the extent that many critics and readers disparaged The Wind in the Willows when it appeared in 1898 for being unlike the two beloved previous books. Shepard's great success as the illustrator of these two works led to his being commissioned to illustrate the 1931 edition of The Wind in the Willows when Arthur Rackham had to turn down the job.

        K.A.M. JUBILEE BOOK 1847 - 1927

1928. Publishers cloth. 8vo. 183 pages. 24 cm. First edition. Bound in black cloth with gilt lettering, includes pastedown photograph of the new temple of the congregation. Includes multiple essays on the history of the oldest congregation in Chicago, illustrations and advertisements throughout. ?Kehillat Anshe Ma'arab, the first Jewish congregation, was established Nov. 3, 1847, when a constitution was adopted and signed by fourteen members. Morris L. Leopold, a young man of twenty - six, born in Laubheim, Württemberg, was elected president. The Jewish Burial - Ground Society turned over to the congregation all its property, including the cemetery, and dissolved. Kehillat Anshe Ma'arab held its first regular service in a private room on the second floor of a building on the southwest corner of Lake and Wells streets, and in 1849 leased a lot on Clark street, between Adams and Quincy streets where the post - office now stands) , on which it erected a frame synagogue. In 1853 this congregation established a day - school, where Hebrew was taught in addition to the regular common - school curriculum. This school was in operation for twenty years. In 1856 a new cemetery on Green Bay road (now North Clark street) and Belmont avenue was purchased. In 1857 the old burial - ground, having been included in the city extensions, had to be abandoned. In 1882 the ground was sold to the park commissioners, and it is now merged in Lincoln Park. On the date of the closing of the old burial - ground (June 11, 1857) the first interment in the new cemetery took place. In 1868 the congregation purchased the northwest corner of Wabash avenue and Peck court, with the church standing upon it. The latter was converted into a synagogue. In the great fire of 1871 the synagogue escaped destruction, but all the records, which had been placed by Joseph Pollak, the secretary of the congregation, and at that time clerk of Cook county, in a vault of the court - house, were lost. In 1873 Dr. Merzbacher's prayer - book was adopted. An organ, choir, and family pews had been introduced several years before. In the fire of1874, Kehillat Anshe Ma'arab lost the synagogue on Wabash avenue, and in December of that year it purchased the church and site on the corner of Indiana avenue and Twenty - sixth street. The church was converted into a synagogue, and the property on Wabash avenue and Peck court was sold. In 1888 Jacob Rosenberg, then vice - president, presented to the congregation twenty acres of land in the town of Jefferson, to be used as a burial - ground. This is now called . ?Mount Ma'arab Cemetery. ? The bodies in the North Clark street cemetery were transferred to Mount Ma'arab, and the vacated property was sold. The latter is now completely built over, and all traces of the former cemetery have vanished. In 1889 Kehillat Anshe Ma'arab found that most of its members had moved farther south. The location of the synagogue being, therefore, no longer convenient for the majority, a plot on the southeast corner of Indiana avenue and Thirty - third street was purchased, and the temple now in use was erected. The latter has a seating capacity of 1, 500 persons. The membership is 175. In 1902 the Einhorn ritual, in the English version, was adopted. ? (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) Subjects: Synagogues - United States - Chicago - History. OCLC lists three copies (HUC, Abraham Lincoln Libr, Detroit Univ) . Light wear to cloth, otherwise fine. Great condition. A beautiful copy. (AMR - 42 - 2)

        Decline and Fall.

London: Chapman & Hall Ltd,, 1928. An Illustrated Novelette. Octavo. Original red and black marbled cloth, gilt lettered spine. With the dust jacket. Illustrations by Evelyn Waugh. Spine slightly rolled; an excellent copy in the jacket with faded spine. First edition, first impression. The author's remarkable first novel, with his own illustrations, in the dust jacket also designed by him. After the book was rejected for indecency by Duckworth's, the publisher of his earlier biography of Rossetti, Waugh offered the manuscript to Chapman & Hall, but he did so while his father, who was the managing director of the firm, was away on holiday. The acting-director agreed to publish the novel and Arthur Waugh returned to London to discover that his son was his firm's newest author. When Arthur Waugh's biography was published three years later, however, Decline and Fall and Vile Bodies, the two novels published under his directorship of Chapman & Hall, were not mentioned. The indelicate material, which Martin Stannard has since revealed in fact did go through some "taming" revisions, was perhaps too much for the elder Waugh.

        Arabia of the Wahhabis.

London: Constable and Co Ltd,, 1928. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, covers ruled in blind, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. 29 plates from the author's own photographs (including frontispiece), 1 plan, large folding colour map to rear opening to approx. 600 x 800 mm, 14 line-drawings to the text. Bookplate of Comte Raoul Chandon de Birailles (1850-1908), champagne merchant and wine historian, to front pastedown. Spine gently rolled, extremities lightly bumped, half-title browned, a very good copy. First edition, first impression of the work completing Philby's account of his mission to Ibn Sa'ud, ruler of the Nejd, in 1917, begun with The Heart of Arabia, published in 1922. The British were keen to woo Ibn Sa'ud into attacking the Rashids of Ha'il, allies of the Turks, and Philby travelled by camel from the Persian Gulf to Riyadh. "There he spent ten days and was deeply impressed by the personality of Ibn Sa'ud. It was the start of an admiration that stayed with him for life. Persuading Ibn Sa'ud to provide an escort, he continued his journey, again by camel, to Jiddah on the Red Sea ? This crossing of Arabia from coast to coast brought him for the first time into the public eye. In Jiddah, Philby met the Hashemite ruler of Hejaz, the Sharif Husain, leader of the Arab revolt, whose sons were in the field against the Turks, under the guidance of T. E. Lawrence. He became convinced that the British authorities in Cairo and London were wrong to prefer Husain over Ibn Sa'ud as the future leader of the Arabs. But his arguments to this effect did not prevail, either then or later ? Few would quarrel with the inscription on [Philby's] tombstone: 'Greatest of Arabian explorers'. And in the central judgements of his life?that Ibn Sa'ud was the man to back in Arabia and that the Arabs had to have their independence?he was right and almost everyone else was wrong." (ODNB).

Putyi tvoi, Gospodi, skaji mne [Thy Ways, O Lord, Tell Me]. Autograph musical manuscript of this vocal work for tenor solo, mixed chorus and piano. In score

      - 10 pp. In E, 2/2 time, marked "Lento" at head. Folio (358 x 265 mm.). Unbound. Notated in ink on 18-stave Russian music manuscript paper. With numerous autograph corrections and amendations including pencil markings of an editorial nature. The printer's copy, presumably used in preparation of the published edition. With pencilled annotation to upper left corner of title indicating receipt of the manuscript (presumably by the publisher) on October 13, 1928. Slightly worn and soiled. Not recorded in Slonimsky. "In two fields of Russian music Grechaninov has a special place: children';s music and liturgical works. Even his first liturgy op.13 is worth attention; and in the op.19 choruses he used a new style, favoured by Katal sky and others, recognizable by its modal harmonization of old Russian melodies. This initially aroused strong opposition from conservative church musicians. In the popular second liturgy Grechaninov solved the problem of the Credo by giving the text to a solo alto, who declaims it rhythmically while the choir sings the word ?Veruyu'; (?I believe';) in simple harmony. Grechaninov';s later use of instruments in para-liturgical works, his composition of a Roman Catholic Mass and motets (with organ), and his writing of a Missa oecumenica - a Latin mass for solo voices, chorus, organ and orchestra on Orthodox, Gregorian and Hebrew liturgical melodies - all testify to his liberal religious outlook."       Moscow: Iskra revolyutsii, 1928. [64] pp. 26x17 cm. 5000 copies printed. Wrapper designed by B. Sakhnovsky, photo-montage by A. Akhtyrko, L. Zotov, B. Sakhnovsky. Spine is repaired with paper, otherwise good condition. "Blue Blouse" was a popular theater-collective of the early Soviet era. First a small troupe, it was soon replicated across the country, and by 1927 there were 5000 troupes with more than 100,000 actors involved. Essentially, they filled the gap left by the pre-revolutionary phenomenon of folk-theater. The "Blue Blouse" founded the style of agitprop theater, a corollary of the poster propaganda of the day. Most of the well-known Soviet poets and writers were involved in "Blue Blouse" productions: Osip Brik was the ideological creator of the theater; Vladimir Mayakovsky amd Vassily Lebedev-Kumach were among its writers. A tour of the theater to Germany, Lithuania and China connected with a wide public. This collection celebrates the 5th anniversary of the theater. It includes reviews of Sinyaya Bluza productions and describes the most notable performances. OCLC locates no copies in USA.

20 Hrs. and 40 Min. Our Flight in the Friendship. The American Girl, First Across the Atlantic by Air, Tells Her Story.

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1928. First edition, second printing, published the same year as the first. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Amelia Earhart on the half title page. In near fine condition with light rubbing. "In April 1928 Earhart received the telephone call that would change her life: an offer to become the first woman to fly the Atlantic. Earhart's impeccable character and physical resemblance to Charles A. Lindbergh made her an easy choice for the promoters, aviator Richard Byrd, publisher George Putnam, and socialite Amy Phipps Guest, who had originally intended to make the flight. On the morning of 3 July 1928 Earhart departed from Boston Harbor in a trimotor Fokker with pilots Wilmer 'Bill' Stultz and Louis 'Slim' Gordon. Earhart agreed to go as a passenger, though 'the idea of going as just 'extra weight' did not appeal to me at all.' Following the departure from Trepassy, Newfoundland, at 11:40 a.m. on 17 June, the Friendship encountered miserable weather, and Earhart never touched the controls during the 20-hour, 40-minute flight. Stultz landed the Fokker on the water at Burry Port, Wales, and Earhart became an immediate sensation. Earhart was astounded by the reception she received. She was feted in London and New York and was given a ticker-tape parade down Broadway with her nearly forgotten fellow pilots. On the postflight tour around the country... Earhart sensed her opportunity to promote her passions of aviation, feminism, and pacifism... Earhart became an accomplished speaker, writer, and columnist for Cosmopolitan. She joined Lindbergh in promoting a new air mail service, Transcontinental Air Transport, and she purchased a Lockheed Vega, which she flew in the first women's cross-country air derby in 1929" (ANB).

Meistergeigen aus dem Besitz von Emil Hermann. 1926 - 27. (und:) Rare Violins Meistergeigen Emil Hermann. 1927 - 28. 2 Bände.

(1928/1929), Berlin - New York 1928 - Quer-Quart. 49 nn. Bll. (Katalog 1926 - 27); 57 nn. Bll. (Katalog 1927 - 28).
