Shanghai of Today. A Souvenir Album of Fifty Vandyck Prints of "The Model Settlement"....

Shanghai. Kelly & Walsh. 1928. 15pp + 50 striking tipped in plates on an individual leaf each with decorative border and printed caption on opposite leaf. Black and white plate on upper cover. Original paper covered limp boards marked and worn with loss particularly at corners, plain modern cloth spine, Japanese paper repairs on joints. From the library of Arthur Hacker, Hong Kong author, artist, historian and collector with a neat pencilled underneath each image. Although the binding is worn and damaged the contents of this copy are very good and clean. 31 X 25cm. The eight page introduction by O.M. Green, editor of the North China Daily News, offers a very interesting picture of the city of Shanghai in the late 1920s. O.M. Green's opinions are interesting and no doubt reflect the thoughts of many others at the time. Certain of the great benefit and superiority of Western ways and Westerner governance he gives only limited recognition to the contribution of the local Chinese people. His text is accompanied by the 50 views which of course are the heart of this book. These striking views of Shanghai through a soft lens include a great many street scenes showing the local inhabitants going about their daily business with the grand buildings of Shanghai featuring in the background.         Zur Lage der Strafrechtspflege. Die Lehren eines praktischen Falles.

Leipzig; F. C. W. Vogel, 1928. (Offprint from Archiv für Kriminologie (Kriminalanthropologie und Kriminalistik), Band 82, 2/3. Heft, 1928). 21x15 cm. 99-138 pp. Plain quarter cloth with marbled boards, paper label on front board with ''54'' printed and an ''A'' in handwriting. With the library stamp of Magnus Hirschfeld-Stiftung on front paste-down, front wrapper and first text page. With the title in handwriting on the first text page. The boards are slightly bowed. Contents are a bit toned in margins. A well-preserved copy. Max Alsberg (1877-1933), German jurist from a Jewish merchant family and one of the most famous criminal defense lawyers of the Weimar Republic. He describes in this work a case where a man is wrongly convicted as the court fails to expose an unreliable witness, and urges that forensic psychiatrist should be consulted at trials on a regular basis. One of few surviving books from the library of the Magnus Hirschfeld-Stiftung, which was seized and, to a great extent, burned by the Nazi regime. Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935), Jewish German physician and sexologist. He was a co-founder of the Wissenschaftlich-humanitäre Komitee in 1897, an organisation which implemented ''the first advocacy for homosexual and transgender rights'' (Goltz: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Movements, 2008), and started the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft in Berlin in 1919. The institute gained world-wide reputation for its providing of medical consultations and its educational activities concerning sexuality. The library, from which the offered book is derived, housed at the institute consisted of around 40 000 volumes. They were all seized or burned in 1933, as the Nazi regime started persecuting perceived sexual deviants. Later that same year, an auction was arranged where approximately 8000 volumes from the institute's library were sold (cf. Dose & Herrn: Verloren 1933: Bibliothek und Archiv des Instituts für Sexualwissenschaft in Berlin, Frankfurt 2006). The whereabouts of these supposedly survived copies are unknown, in any case books from the institute's library are extremely scarce.

Beggars of LIfe (Original photograph from the 1928 film)

Los Angeles: Paramount / Famous Lasky Corporation, 1928. Vintage black-and-white reference photograph from the 1928 film. Based on Jim Tully's 1924 book, "Beggars of Life: A Hobo Autobiography." The story of a girl (Louise Brooks, known only as "The Girl") who kills her treacherous stepfather, disguises herself as a boy, joins up with a vagabond (Richard Arlen as "The Boy") and attempts to escape the country into Canada. The first Paramount film to have a small amount of spoken dialogue, added in post-recording to the music and effects track. Much of it was filmed on location, including footage of an actual train derailment. Louise Brooks performed her own stunt in a scene where she jumps onto a moving train. Brooks' appearance in the film as a boy began a trend in popular film beauties playing androgynous roles, culminating 13 years later when Veronica Lake played another boyish vagabond character simply called "The Girl" in Sullivan's Travels. Preston Sturges was likely inspired by the William Wellman scenario. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Near Fine. Complete collation details available on request.

Autograph letter signed. [Paris], 21. XII. 1928.

1928. Large 4to. 2 pp. To unnamed Belgian author, filmmaker and documentarist Henri Storck. Back from a trip to Belgium, he thanks Storck for the friendly reception at the Club du Cinéma, attaching some photographs. ". -Léon Spilliaert (1881-1946) was a Belgian painter and graphic artist; James Ensor (1860-1949) was a Belgian painter and printmaker.         Hafriyat al-Fustat (Majmu`at al-manazir al-futughrafiyah). Fouilles dal Foustât (Album de photographies). Cairo, Mathaf al-Fann al-Islami, 1928.

1928. Folio (280 x 382 mm). (2), 5, (1) pp., 32 photographic plates. Original green half cloth with printed covers. First Arabic edition. Atlas of plates intended to accompany Aly Bahgat's 1928 Arabic translation of the original French edition of his "Fouilles dal Foustât" (Paris, 1921). The city of Fustat, the first capital of Egypt under Arab rule, reached its peak in the 12th century, with a population of approximately 200,000. It was the center of administrative power in Egypt until it was ordered burned in 1168 by its own vizier, Shawar, to keep its wealth out of the hands of the invading Crusaders. The remains of the city were eventually absorbed into nearby Cairo. Today, Fustat is part of Old Cairo, with few buildings remaining from its days as capital, though there have been many archaeological digs which have taken advantage of the wealth of buried material in the area. Many ancient items recovered from the site are on display in Cairo's Museum of Islamic Art. - Table of contents and captions in Arabic and French. At head of title: Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyah / Musée de l'Art Arabe. - Corners insignificantly bumped; altogether well-preserved. OCLC 28312546.

THE POOH BOOKS, Including: When We Were Very Young; Winnie-the-Pooh; Now We Are Six; and The House at Pooh Corner

London: Methuen & Co., Ltd, 1928. First editions. A complete set of the first, UK trade editions for all four "Pooh" books in a lovely state of preservation. "When We Were Very Young" is a Nearly Fine copy with the spine gently cocked and slight offsetting to the end papers. "Winnie The Pooh" is a Fine copy of the book. "Now We Are Six" is a Fine copy of the book with minor offsetting to the pages adjacent the half-titles (as always). "The House at Pooh Corner" is Nearly Fine with the spine very lightly faded and faint soiling to the cloth. A. A. Milne would write the Pooh stories after being inspired by his son, Christopher Robin, and his stuffed animals, one of which was a bear named "Winnie." Milne had written prolifically in other modes and genres, but the Pooh books would go on to outshine all his other works. Indeed, "Winnie The Pooh" has been listed on the New York Public Library's 100 greatest children's books of the century and the Ashdown Forest, where the stories take place, has become a tourist attraction as a result. "I think Pooh's secret is the kindness and generosity of spirit of the characters toward each other." (Jeanne Lamb, NY Public Library).
