        Money Illusion

1928 - THE MONEY ILLUSION, WARMLY INSCRIBED BY FISHER TO FELLOW STABLE MONEY ADVOCATE RALPH WESCOTT, IN SCARCE ORIGINAL DUST JACKETFISHER, Irving. The Money Illusion. New York: Alephi Company, (1928). Small octavo, original green cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $8500.First edition, presentation/association copy, of this analysis of currency instability by America's first great economist, warmly inscribed by Fisher in the year of publication to a fellow stable money proponent, "To Mr. Ralph W. Wescott with the compliments and love of Irving Fisher, August, 1928."While [Fisher's] was a prominent voice in American public discourse for some three decades, his influence has been most enduring in government uses of economic quantification and within the discipline of economics itself". His work has inspired a huge professional literature, both in the more abstract and in applied areas of economic research" (ANB). In The Money Illusion (a book based upon a series of lectures Fisher delivered at the Geneva School of International Studies), Fisher discusses the "hidden causes" and "harm[ful] results" of "all monetary units, including the dollar" (Preface). During the 1920s, Fisher actively supported the League of Nations. He campaigned for pro-League presidential candidate James Cox, and also spearheaded the Pro-League Independents. Recipient Ralph Wescott was an Independents staff member. In addition, Wescott was affiliated with the Stable Money League, which Fisher founded to promote a course of steadying money's value by adjusting appropriately the dollar's exchange rate against gold.Book very nearly fine with interior clean, slightest rubbing to spine ends. Fragile and scarce original dust jacket bright and very good, with mild toning to spine, light edge-wear including shallow chipping to spine head and front panel.         Photographic Travel Journal documenting a cross-country trip from Peru, Indiana to settle in Prescott, Arizona. Includes photographs of the Smoki People

Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, New Mexico, Arizona, 1928. The large (approximately 14" x 9") album contains 82 pages with approximately 230 photographs (ranging in size from 1.5" x 2.5" to 7" x 10.5") and a few postcards and other ephemeral items. The photographs are in nice shape and glued to the album pages. Many of the pages are artistically decorated and captioned in white ink. The album has a worn yapped leather cover over its boards with an abbreviated version of the poem [Out] Where the West Begins printed on the front above vignettes of cowboys, a wagon train, and one lone Native American. This exceptional album, although not in chronological sequence, documents Reuter's trip and his first several years living in Prescott. Highlights include * Buildings, towns, streets, mines, people, and scenery along the way and in Prescott; * The Missouri River ferry at Arrow Rock, Missouri; * Reuter's auto-tent camping setup including one image after a rainstorm at Topeka, Kansas; * The road with seventeen hairpin turns between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Reuter's car at the top of the mountain pass; * Reuter sitting on a spare tire lashed to the back of his car after arriving in Arizona; * Reuter at his desk and standing by the linotype machines at the Journal-Miner, * Prescott's Annual Fourth of July Frontier Days Wild West Show and Rodeo including bull wrestling, bronco busting, the parade, and * Six images (four photographs and two postcards) of the Smoki People. Dutch Reuter, a young journeyman printer, traveled from Indiana to Prescott, Arizona in 1923 to begin work at Journal-Miner newspaper as a machinist and linotypist. Eventually, Reuter established the Prescott Printing Company where he edited and published the Yavapai County Messenger. Reuter was a very early member of the Smoki People, joining soon after his arrival in Prescott. The Smoki originated in 1921 when a group of Prescott businessmen dressed in Native American costumes and performed a "Snake Dance" loosely based on the Hopi Snake Dance as a way to support the Prescott Wild West Show. The dance proved to be exceptionally popular, and continued success led the group to formally organize and repeat an ever-enlarging annual show for the next seventy years. As a group, the Smoki became very interested in preserving Southwest Indian culture at a time when the federal government had outlawed tribal ceremonies and compelled tribal children to attend boarding schools and abandon traditional ways. As part of that effort, they established an important museum to showcase pottery, baskets, lithics, and textiles. In the late 1980s, members of the Hopi tribe began to formally complain about the Smoki's cultural appropriation of its religious Snake Dance. In turn, the Smoki People invited a delegation of Hopis to attend the event in 1989 to see that the celebration was well-intended. The effort did little to change anyone's mind, and the Smoki ceased their performances the following year. The Smoki Museum, however, continues in operation today guided by a Native American Advisory Council.

        Sun Also Rises (German)

1928 - HEMINGWAY, Ernest. Fiesta [The Sun Also Rises]. Berlin: Ernst Rowohlt, 1928. Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket. $20,000.First edition in German, Hemingway's own copy with his ownership signature on the front free endpaper, presentation copy additionally inscribed and signed by him on the title page, "For Frazer [sic] Bragg Drew wishing him good luck always, Ernest Hemingway. It's hard to keep books in decent condition in a country where they have hurricanes. These books are all survivors." As a young teacher, Drew wrote a letter to which Hemingway responded with uncharacteristic kindness, signing six of Drew's books and presenting him with six more "as an act of contrition" for taking so long to return the books. Hemingway then invited Drew to visit, and on April 8, 1955, one year after Hemingway won the Nobel Prize, they spent a long afternoon discussing literature, later recounted by Drew in his article "Unedited Notes on a Visit to Finca Vigia" (in Bruccoli, Conversations With Ernest Hemingway, 89-98). At the end of Drew's visit Hemingway said "Let's go up to the house and sign those books of yours." Hemingway inscribed all the books Drew had brought with him and presented him with many others from his own collection; this volume was undoubtedly one of the books presented and inscribed by Hemingway that day. The Sun Also Rises first published in English in 1926. Grissom, 698. Bookplate of Fraser Drew. Publisher's postcard laid in.Scattered light foxing to text; scarce original dust jacket with mild toning to spine and extremities, only minor shallow chipping to spine ends. In 1927 he started "The Housatonuc" bookstore in Salisbury, Connecticut specializing in rare and antiquarian books. The move may have inspired the presentation- "Coals to Newcastle" is a British idiom for a foolhardy or pointless action. Laid in is a copy of an e-mail from Aiken's grand daughter Lizza Aiken, who is the daughter of Joan Aiken. In the letter Aiken confirms the handwriting is that of her grandfather and that the "joke" in the presentation "is typical, so I think I can fairly confidently say that I think it is his signature, in slightly grandiose mood." With a small promotional four-page leaflet promoting the Jonathan Cape English edition of this title laid in. Very Good (contents clean & tight); minor wear (some moderate browning & two small interior tape repairs, price-clipped) d/j. $875.00.

        Book of Catherine Wells

1928 - WELLS, H.G. The Book of Catherine Wells. With an Introduction by her Husband H.G. Wells. London: Chatto & Windus, 1928. Octavo, contemporary full green morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut. $1850.First edition of H.G. Wells' "deeply moving" tribute to his wife, inscribed by him on the half title to his close friend and advisor Richard Arman Gregory, "RAGs. Old friend from H.G." Handsomely bound by Zaehnsdorf."'Jane' Wells (Amy Catherine Robbins) died in 1927, and this deeply moving work, containing a number of her own notes and jottings, is Wells's tribute in her memory. 'Gentle, faithful, wise and self-forgetful, she was the maker of a kind and free and hospitable home".' A seven-page booklet, In Memory of Amy Catherine Wells (Jane Wells), was printed privately in 1927 and consists of the funeral address 'read for Mr. Wells by Dr. T.E. Page'" (H.G. Wells Society 104). That pamphlet is laid into this copy. With four tipped-in photographic plates. Hammond K28. Not in Currey. Inscribed to noted British scientist and Wells' lifelong friend Sir Richard Arman Gregory. In Wells' first work of fiction, he dedicated the work to Gregory as his "dearest friend." The two met while students at the Normal School of Science in South Kensington. They jointly authored a textbook, Honours Physiography, in 1891. Reportedly, Gregory was the one person with whom Wells never quarreled. A professor of astronomy, Gregory also possessed expertise in physics, chemistry and other disciplines; he wrote several textbooks and eventually assumed the editorship of the journal Nature, to which Wells frequently contributed. The author often turned to Gregory, and to the experts Gregory contacted on Wells' behalf, for insight and encouragement when writing his famous "scientific romances." After Wells' death, Gregory worked to establish the H.G. Wells Memorial to preserve public attention to his friend's body of work. Throughout his life Gregory was a passionate advocate for science"""It is necessary to believe in the holiness of scientific work," he once declared""and "an optimist about man's future" (Horrabin, in New Scientist, April 11, 1957).Interior fine, toning to spine of morocco-gilt binding. A near-fine inscribed copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Oriental Collection

1928 - BROWN, G.M.L. Oriental Collection. New York: Foliophiles, 1928. Folio, 24 folders with descriptive text containing 39 leaves (1 scroll leaf in separate box), housed in original cloth box. $11,000.First edition of this classic Foliophiles leaf book, number 1 of only 45 copies, with 39 individual leaves from the 12th to the 19th centuries, representing all the major Asian writing systems."In its usual form, a leaf book contains an original leaf from a significant manuscript or printed book, accompanied by an essay written by a knowledgeable, or at least prominent, author". Although many private collectors tipped in leaves from other books as part of the process of 'extra-illustration,' these individually created books are not considered to be leaf books. Standard sources on book collecting and leaf books trace the true beginning of the genre to 1865, with the publication of Francis Fry's A Description of the Great Bible". [which] included 14 original leaves, which were taken from incomplete or defective 16th- and 17th-century English Bibles. Fry, a businessman who spent much of his later life collecting and studying Bibles, believed, as he wrote in his introduction, that 'no description is equal to an actual leaf.' Reading about a book can be educational and rewarding, but seeing and handling the book""whether the complete object, or a single leaf extracted from it""is a completely different, and potentially much richer, experience. A belief in the power of the original object has been one of the main motivations for the production of leaf books ever since". The book collecting boom of the 1920s brought with it significantly increased production of leaf books of all kinds". Organizations such as the Society of Foliophiles created and marketed several different portfolios of leaves, including Specimens of Oriental Mss. and Printing (1928)" (Silver). In his brief introduction, Brown notes: "The Oriental manuscripts and printed books represented in this portfolio are fairly representative of the progress of the art of writing, and to a lesser degree of printing, throughout Asia. In my comments attached to these examples there has been an attempt to describe the development of the various languages represented." The collection consists of 24 folders and 1 box, containing a total of 39 individual leaves: 1.Nestorian Syriac manuscript (16th-century book of prayers, worming to margins) and printed leaf from a New Testament in Syriac (1843). 2.Armenian manuscript (catechism and book of prayers, 1741) and printed leaf from an Armenian book of rituals (1831). 3.Arabic manuscript in Cufic characters (12th-century Koran). 4.Arabic manuscript (15th-century book of devotions) and modern Arabic manuscript (Koran). 5.Arabic manuscript (17th-century Koran, probably Egyptian, light worming to margins) and printed leaf from an Arabic book (1833 work of French authorship on health and hygiene).6.Arabic manuscript written in Persia (early 19th-century suras). 7.Turkish manuscript (late 18th-century book of travels with miniature view of Mecca on verso) and printed leaf from a Turkish dictionary (1841). 8.Persian manuscript (biographies of noted Sufis, 1478, worming and edge restoration). 9.Persian manuscript (the Gulistan of Sa'di, 1563) and printed leaf from a Persian textbook (1827). 10.Persian manuscript (the Shahnama of Firdausi, 17th century) and Persian manuscript (the Kamsah of Nizami, 17th century). 11.Persian manuscript with miniature (1520, edge restoration). 12.Kashmir manuscript in Persian (1848). 13.Sanskrit manuscript (end of 18th century) and printed leaf from a New Testament in Sanskrit (1844). 14.Sanskrit manuscript (18th-century puranas) and illuminated Sanskrit manuscript (early 19th-century Mahabarata). 15.Rajput miniature painting (early 19th-century Mahabarata). 16.Hindi manuscript (the Chronicles of Rajputana, 1839) and printed leaf from Sakuntala in Hindi (1876). 17.Tibetan Buddist manuscript (1662-1722; scroll manuscript in [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
