Egon und Emilie Kein Familiendrama von Christian Morgenstein... Opus 46. Klavier-Auszug. [Piano-vocal score]. With autograph annotations

Mainz: B. Schott's Söhne [PN 32168], 1928. These two scores evidently provided the basis for the edition with English text published by Associated Music Publishers, Inc. recorded in OCLC with no definitive date ("1928-1956"), Edgar and Emily Not a Family Drama. An Austrian-born composer, Toch became a naturalized American in 1940. "His experiences in the [First World] war left a mark on him, and his first composition after it, the Ninth String Quartet op.26 (1919), signals a new stylistic direction. Where the prewar works, for all their originality, are audibly indebted to Brahms, the Ninth Quartet is more radical, employing an extended tonality and an uncompromising emphasis on the linear dimension. It and the works that followed earned Toch a prominent place in the musical avant garde... The two short operas Die Prinzessin auf der Erbse op.43 (1927) and Egon und Emilie op.46 (1928) were not only examples of contemporary Zeitoper but also way-stations in the composer's search for a libretto for a full-length opera." Anja Oechsler in Grove Music Online.. Folio. Original publisher's gray printed wrappers with device in dark orange to upper. [1] (recto title, verso cast and instrumentation lists), 3-[22] pp. music, 1f. (recto blank, verso publisher's advertisement). "Edition Schott Nr. 1419" to foot of upper wrapper; list of Toch's works to verso of lower wrapper, with "813" to lower left corner. Two copies (one marked "Master Copy" in turquoise pencil to upper wrapper), both with autograph corrections and annotations in red and lead pencil and textual additions in English in blue pencil to one copy and ink to the other, some in all likelihood in Toch's autograph. With an additional two pages of autograph manuscript notes in lead pencil detailing changes and incorporating autograph musical notation laid into the "Master Copy," with editor's annotations in red pencil. With two further pages of musical corrections in Toch's hand in lead pencil annotated in red pencil, possibly in another hand. With a 2-page typescript of the text in English translated by Paul Aron laid in. Wrappers worn and with ink stains and edge tears; partially detached. Slightly browned and chipped internally. In quite good condition overall.

Korol', Dama, Valet [King, Queen, Knave]

Berlin: Slovo, 1928. First edition. Original wrappers. Fine. RARE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF NABOKOV'S SECOND NOVEL. "Originally published in Russian in 1928 under the penname Sirin, King, Queen, Knave is the second novel by famed author Vladimir Nabokov.... Unlike his first novel, Mary (1926), which is autobiographical in theme and features mainly Russian characters, Nabokov's King, Queen, Knave tells the story of a German love triangle. The author's virtuosic use of the stock plot of a love triangle results in a highly comic narrative that departs significantly from his first novel, whose meditations on memory, loss, and the passage of time recall the work of the great French modernist Marcel Proust. As an early divergence from modernism, and as an inspired parody of genre fiction, King, Queen, Knave forecasts the great English-language novels of Nabokov's maturity: Lolita (1955), Pale Fire (1962), and Ada (1969)" (Encyclopedia of the World Novel). King, Queen, Knave was not translated into English until 1968, forty years after its Russian debut. Berlin: Slovo, 1928. Small octavo, original wrappers; custom box. A touch of browning to spine, but still a beautiful, fine copy. RARE.

Archive of World War One letters and documents relating to a Polish immigrant's service in the 26th Infantry Division's 104th Infantry Regiment and his death at Belleau Woods on the first day of the Aisne-Marne Offensive

Massachusetts and France, 1928. This grouping consists of 58 items: * Seven letters written by Kocienski while in France (two of the letters are written in Polish; one letter is damaged and incomplete), * One packet of 30 documents, letters, and notes related to his death and the payment of federal next-of-kin benefits (including Kocienski's official naturalization certificate, death notification, and letters written by his commander), * One packet of 15 documents, letters, and notes related to payment of Massachusetts next-of-kin benefits, * Four letters related to payment of War Risk Insurance benefits, and * Two miscellaneous letters, one regarding the publication of a Gold Star memorial book and the other regarding a reunion of the 104th Infantry Regiment. Kocienski, born in what is today Poland in 1896, immigrated to the United States in 1912 and settled in Haydensville, Massachusetts where he lived with first cousin, Mary Antowska. The cousins had been exceptionally close since early childhood and had always referred to each other as brother and sister. When Kocienski enlisted in Army in early 1917, he named Mary as his beneficiary for all family and insurance allotments. Kocienski's letters to Mary include descriptions of Army life in a combat unit and trench warfare: "We lost a few men but we slain about two hundred Germans and we taken number of prisoners and us taken a number of prisoners. . . . We have just came out of the trenches. I suppose you have heard about the good work our regiment is doing in the front line trenches. We have had some pretty hart times. . . When we are off duty we stay in dugouts . . . we have to be very careful of shells because they are very dangerous if they strik anywhere near you, you are out of luck. When we hear the report of the gun over in the German lines we can almost tell by the sound where the shell is going so we have quite a lot of time to jump for cover . . . if we happen to be out in the middle of a field . . . we just drop flat on our stomachs. . . . The hardest part [is] to stand on guard all night watching and listening. . . . Sometimes you hear a noise that sounds like a big German and pull you rifle up to shoot and the first thing you hear is the squek of a rat it makes your hair stand on end. . . . I thought I saw a lot of big rats in the U.S. but the rats up around the trenches are the biggest I have ever seen or heard of. They live in the dugouts too, and when you go to bed at night they have a fine time running up and down your legs and face." The 104th Infantry first saw combat in April of 1918, and the entire unit was awarded the French Croix de Guerre for exceptional bravery and courage. In July of 1918, the 26th Division relieved the 2nd Division at Belleau Wood, where the 104th was almost immediately shelled with heavy high explosives and drenched in mustard gas. On the 18th, the regiment helped lead the attack during the Second Battle of the Marne in the Aisne-Marne Offensive. Kocienski was severely wounded in the initial assault and evacuated for medical attention, however he could not later be found and was listed for months as missing in action. Eventually, Mary was notified that he was killed and buried in an American cemetery in France after which she began receiving allotments as his next-of-kin, until during an administrative review, the Veteran's Bureau (precursor of today's Veteran's Administration) discovered that she was Kocienski's cousin and not his sister. Using his naturalization certificate, the Bureau determined Mary was ineligible for any benefits and instead began paying them to Kocienski's father in Russia. Worse, the Bureau demanded that Mary return the thousands of dollars she had already received back to the U.S. Treasury. The packets of documents included in this archive provide fascinating insight into the grinding disdain and insensitivity of the federal bureaucracy as well as the dogged perseverance of her lawyers and her "brother's" former commanding officer to prevent this travesty. It is unknown if they were successful. A unique and compelling collection that documents an immigrant's ultimate sacrifice for his adopted country in World War One and the callous indifference of big government that followed.

Jääpeili : runoja (Ice Mirror : Poetry)

Otava, Helsingissä 1928 - Finnish language. Octavo 13 x 19 cm. Weight 80 gr. Wrappers, 65 [2] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition, without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Slightly frayed cover corners and bottom edge of the cover, soft book-lenght vertical creaser on the front cover, back cover shows light soiling; internally perfect condition. Superior avant-garde constructivist cover design by Topi Vikstedt (1891-1930), the most prominent Finnish book illustrator in the 1920s. Aaro Hellaakoski (1893 –1952) was a Finnish poet whose work includes some of the earliest examples of modernism in Finnish literature. Present verse collection is considered as the forerunner and masterpiece of Finnish literary modernism. It is notable especially for its experimental typography, there are used different typefaces. The mixing of historical typographic styles can thus be interpreted as an acknowledgement that there is no present without the past and no modernity without a tradition. Besides visual experiments author's collection includes rhythmic experimentations. Traditional and brilliant use of rhyme as well as avant-garde and fairytale all mix in Hellaakoski's philosophical, existentional poetry. Both the symbolism-influenced, post-romantic, already automated poetic style of the beginning of the 20th century and the classicising current that developed in response to it, typographic experimentations, concrete poems, in which the visual form and linguistic meaning work together, are made the collection still standing the test of the time.         Die Stahlkirche

Furche-Kunstverlag, Berlin 1928 - Small Quarto. 29 (1)pp., 16 plates (4 in color). Original wraps design, black lettering on cover, orange on spine, protected in modern mylar. Protestant (Evangelical) Religious Architecture at the Pressa, Cologne 1928. Foreword by Otto Bartning, a known German architect and theoretician specialized in churches. Bartning was a member of the German Werkbund and collaborated with Gropius to conceptualize the idea and program of the Bauhaus. Though he did not participate in the founding of the Bauhaus, he taught at the architecture school in Weimar after the Bauhaus had moved to Dessau. His international break -through came with the construction of the glass and steel church on the exhibition grounds of the 1928 Pressa in Cologne, conceived as a construction set and serving as the exhibition pavilion for the German Protestant Church during the Pressa. It was seen as a architectural statement that showed the will of the church to adapt to modernity, not to speak of the placement of this church vis à vis the famous Cologne Dome. Due to the economic hardships of most German parishes, there were no takers for the church and it was given without charges to the Protestant parish in Essen. The book contains an essay by pastor Paul Girkon on the problems of Protestant church design in view of the Protestant doctrine and its solution in the design of the steel church, an expert opinion of the heating system of the church, and a contribution of the structural design of the church by the two Berlin engineers Kuhn and Schaim, including architectural plans. Illustrated with 16 striking photographs by H. Schmölz and J. Josuweck showing the construction, the exterior and interior of the church, 4 of them in color. Laid in a publisher's flyer of the publication by Girkon on glass painting as cult art. Text in German. Wraps with very light wear along edges, rubbed and sunned at top. Inked number on inside front cover. Some moderate foxing to some of the text pages and flyer. Wraps in overall good, text pages in good+ to very good, plates in very good condition. Windsor Castle, Union-Castle Line. With the original envelope addressed to a Mrs. Hewitt of London, SW7. Stamp and postmarks from South Africa, dated 12th November 1928. Envelope torn open, as expected; lightly browned with a few marks. Letter is near-fine. Jean Leckie, Mrs. Doyle since 1907, here writes to a friend in London from aboard ship as she travels with her husband to South Africa, where they embarked on a Spiritualist lecture tour. As is clear from the letter, their mission was very much to convert as many people as possible to their religion - an endeavour in which they seem to have been reasonably successful, even at sea. She begins her letter by reporting a 'fearful storm', in which, 'had the ship rolled 2 degrees more, she must have gone over, and not a soul would have survived.'

New York: Horace Liveright Inc, 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. First edition, first printing. Good. Cloth is rubbed at edges, heaviest at spine ends and corners; rear cover cloth mottled, dinged at edge; scuff to front cover and rubbing to gilt stamping with spine stamping illegible. Pages are toned and foxed throughout, with pencil notations to prelim and one blank terminal page; evidence of erased pencil to early pages of text. Lacking the jacket, though clipped remnants are tipped in and laid in at the rear end sheet. Not the nicest copy, though still very uncommon in the first printing.
