[Manuscript letter describing the miraculous survival of a storm at sea during the South African Spiritualist Tour of 1928].

1st November 1928.. ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LETTER WRITTEN BY SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE'S SECOND WIFE. Written in black ink over both sides of two sheets of headed note paper from the R.M.S. Windsor Castle, Union-Castle Line. With the original envelope addressed to a Mrs. Hewitt of London, SW7. Stamp and postmarks from South Africa, dated 12th November 1928. Envelope torn open, as expected; lightly browned with a few marks. Letter is near-fine. Jean Leckie, Mrs. Doyle since 1907, here writes to a friend in London from aboard ship as she travels with her husband to South Africa, where they embarked on a Spiritualist lecture tour. As is clear from the letter, their mission was very much to convert as many people as possible to their religion - an endeavour in which they seem to have been reasonably successful, even at sea. She begins her letter by reporting a 'fearful storm', in which, 'had the ship rolled 2 degrees more, she must have gone over, and not a soul would have survived.'

Les Idees Nouvelles de la Mode et de Arts No. 10â€"1928

Paris: Les Idees, 1928 - Nouvelles de la Mode et de Arts was one of several fashion journals published in Paris. Les Idees is advertised as “Tres Parisian, la plus belle publication de mode du monde,” very Parisian, the most beautiful fashion publication of the world, the official organ of friends of French fashion. It was published from 1922 to 1932 at the height of French fashion, epitomizing modernity, craftsmanship, and specifically Art Deco which originated in France at the time of the International Exhibition held in Paris. This is an oversize portfolio (13 in. x 10 in.)â€"a medium weight paper cover, itself covered in a Chinese tissue paper, with two attached leaves (four pages) of introductory text by Francoise Marcignac, with two hand-painted illustrations in watercolor; within the covers are 14 loose fashion plates (nos. 9 and 10 of the original 16 are missing). The plates are hand-painted watercolors on the tissue-like paper and are attached to the top edge of a medium weight paper backing. Apparently, the designers supplied outlines and Jourmard did the painting (or Jourmard viewed the fashions and drew the sketches, and someone else painted them, or?). The fashions (day dresses, suits, sportier wear, evening wear, coats, accessories) are stunning and the colors are glorious. Designers represented in this issue are Lucien Lelong, Louise Boulanger, Cheruit, Bernard et C’, Jean Patou, Philippe et Gaston, Marthe, Jenny, Weil, Jancolsi, and Cyber. All of the plates are in excellent condition. The upper right corners of the pages are slightly bent but only the first three have a small crease. There is a little wear and crinkling to the tissue on the covers. A short strip of silk ribbon, half of a tie with which to secure the portfolio, is attached to the back cover, Published in French

Dirizhabl' iz volnistoi stali [The Airship of Corrugated Steel]

self-published, Kaluga 1928 - Octavo (26 × 17.9 cm). Original printed wrappers; 17 pp. Illustrations. Owner inscription of Nikolai A. Varvarov; about very good. Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (also Tsiolkovskii, Ciolkowski, or Ziolkowski; 1857-1935), the Russian aviation and astronautics pioneer, was one of the founding fathers of rocket science and an important inspiration to the Soviet space program, who also furthered Western research in the field. He was largely an autodidact who operated a small aerodynamics laboratory in his own apartment in provincial Kaluga; his early works were published by himself in small numbers and without outside funding and are today very scarce. Although he is now considered a major pioneer in his field, Tsiolkovsky failed to be acknowledged for his achievements for most of his career, gaining some recognition only in the early 1930s. His work is especially interesting insofar as it is not only scientifically motivated, but closely connected to the Russian cultural and philosophical movement of Cosmism. This pamphlet presents in full the basic design and instructionsn for Tsiolkovsky's proposed airship, to be made of corrugated sheet metal and pressurized with gas. Our copy stems from the personal collection of Nikolai A. Varvarov, the head of the astronautics section of the Russian civil defense organization in the 1950s, and an author of popular works on space flight (with his signature to the front wrapper). Scarce, with KVK and OCLC showing copies only at Michigan and ETH Zurich. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Photo Album]: Hawaii

Hawaii 1928 - Oblong octavo. Decorative paper boards measuring 7" x 10". Contains 97 sepia toned photographs measuring between 2" x 2.75" and 6" x 10" and affixed to stiff gray paper with captions. Additionally laid in are newspaper clippings and a Hawaii photogram booklet. Very good album with creasing and tears with mostly near fine photographs with some edgewear.A photo album kept while on a cruise to Hawaii in February of 1928 on the S.S. President Garfield. The album begins on board with the travelers sunbathing and having a good time on the sea along with shots of the boat itself. They arrived in Honolulu in March of that year, a picture of their arrival shows them throwing streamers from the deck. The travelers took trips to the Dole pineapple farm, went on a boat trip past the Leper Colony Kalaupapa, although they didn't disembark, and watched the sunset over Maui. A section of photos depicts a visit to the Hilo Boys Industrial School in Waialee, a reform school for boys consisting of roughly 100 Hawaiian boys convicted of assaulting their guardians. The photos mostly show the school grounds and complex with one photo showing the boys on the Hilo pier. There are also photographs of a flag raising at the Royal School, a boarding school for the royal children of Hawaii. There are photographs of a visit to Manana Island, referred to as Rabbit Island because at a distance it looks like a rabbit's head, and other images of beach frolicking near Kailua Bay. A small selection of larger prints shows the rock faces and cliffs of the Hawaiian coast. The entirety of the trip lasted just over a month with the company boarding a ship bound for the continental U.S. at the end of March. An interesting accumulation of the tourist attractions and local sites of Hawaii in the late 1920s.

        [Photo Album]: Hawaii

Hawaii, 1928. Very Good. Oblong octavo.

        Orlando. A Biography

Crosby Gaige, New York 1928 - Limited first edition, no. 224 of 861 copies on rag paper, signed by the author. Frontispiece and 7 plates. [iv], 336 pp. 8vo. Signed by Woolf. A superb copy in the scarce glassine jacket, signed by Woolf in purple ink on the verso of the half-title. Woolf's singular feminist masterwork was written as "a tribute to [Vita] Sackville-West in the form of a parodic biography of a four-hundred-year old character, who starts out as a young aristocratic man in the Elizabethan age, changes from male to female in the course of the seventeenth century, and winds up as a modern woman driving a motor car in the 'present moment' ? Satirizing both the history of literature and the history of sexuality, Woolf playfully suggests both might be a matter of style" (Encyclopedia of Feminist Literature, p. 277). Kirkpatrick A11 original glassine dust-jacket. A fine, largely unopened copy. Housed in a custom quarter morocco box Frontispiece and 7 plates. [iv], 336 pp. 8vo Limited first edition, no. 224 of 861 copies on rag paper, signed by the author. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Eresia - di Oggi e di Domani. Nos. 1-9 (Aprile 1928 - Marzo 1929)

Bronx, New York: [Enrico Arrigoni], 1928-29. First Edition. Eresia was founded in 1928 by the Italian-American bricklayer Enrico Arrigoni as a journal of individualist anarchism. Nine issues appeared before publication was suspended in March 1929; three more issues would be published in 1931-2. Only the first nine issues are included here. Arrigoni (1898-1988) was a Milanese anarchist, laborer, and social critic; after immigrating to the U.S. ca. 1925 he began contributing to Italian-American journals under the pseudonym "Frank Brand." Arrigoni remained active well into old age, publishing work as late as the 1980s. He was especially active in the movement to aid Cuban anarchists who were persecuted following the 1959 revolution. Eresia forms an important bridge between the Italian-American insurrectionary anarchist tradition of the early 20th century and post-WW2 libertarianism, and it is uncommon: OCLC notes two holdings in North America (Michigan & NYPL), a few others in Europe, of varying degrees of completeness. Nine consecutive issues (issued irregularly), bound into patterned paste-paper boards. Quarto; each issue 32pp; some illus. Binding chipped at corners; moderate wear and toning to contents, including an obtrusive, amateur scotch-tape repair to gutter of issue no. 9; still Good, solidly bound and complete, with no markings or loss. Text entirely in Italian.

Dirizhabl' iz volnistoi stali [The Airship of Corrugated Steel]

Kaluga: self-published, 1928. Octavo (26 × 17.9 cm).

        1-230)

circa 1928 - a feint ruled album with 230 typed limericks on slips of paper pasted onto the pages, juxtaposed above with cut out steel-engraved illustrations, pp. 230, the last leaf with a needle (sharp, and a little rusted) pinned to it, 4to, contemporary/original red linen backed marbled boards, spine weakening (largely due to the increase of bulk, thanks to the additions). The limericks here collected are of the type that Don Marquis identifies as LIMERICKS. The chief glory of this collection, beyond the lubricity of the lyrics themselves, is their extremely clever juxtaposition with melodramatic illustrations from Penny Dreadfuls: they may be said to lift the lid on Victorian prudery and hypocrisy. We have not identified any particular publications, but some examples are signed by such artists as Crowquill, Nicholson, and John Swain. The collection is datable to about 1928. A few appear in Norman Douglas's anthology, and others in Gershorn Legman's anthology of 1953, where commensurate dates are assigned. Contemporary references to Freud, Stopes, and a Seven Horse Austin, reinforce this dating. The one concerning Freud was composed by Philip Hestletine, and was published in The Weekend Book in 1927: here, the last word is 'phalluses' rather than the coy 'fallacies' in Legman. About a quarter of the limericks here are anthologised by Legman, but many are not, so there are probably some original.

        La Boîte à joujoux

1928. HELLE, Andre. La Boîte à Joujoux, texte et dessins de André Hellé. 32 pp. Profusely illustrated. Folio, bound in publisher's illustrated boards. Paris: A. Tolmer, 1928. |~||~||~||~| A delightful and rare version of Helle's story, which had originally been published in 1919 as a collaboration between Helle and the composer Claude Debussy. This version is completely different, and instead of Helle's illustrations complementing Debussy's score, they are here subjected to masterful mis-en-page by Andre Tolmer. A fine, fresh copy.
