BARBIER (George)
Paris, Camille Bloch & Jules Meynial, 1927. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Churchill, Winston S
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1927. First American editions of Churchill's important history of World War I. Octavo, four volumes, bound in full morocco leather, gilt titles and tooling the spine, raised bands, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, ribbon bound in, original cloth bound in. In near fine condition. His American biographer William Manchester wrote that: His masterpiece is The World Crisis, published over a period of several years, 1923 to 1931, a six-volume, 3,261-page account of the Great War, beginning with its origins in 1911 and ending with its repercussions in the 1920s. Magnificently written, it is enhanced by the presence of the author at the highest councils of war and in the trenches as a battalion commander. The British historian Robert Rhodes James wrote that: For all its pitfalls as history, The World Crisis must surely stand as Churchill’s masterpiece. As first lord of the admiralty and minister for war and air, Churchill stood resolute at the center of international affairs. In this classic account, he dramatically details how the tides of despair and triumph flowed and ebbed as the political and military leaders of the time navigated the dangerous currents of world conflict. Churchill vividly recounts the major campaigns that shaped the war: the furious attacks of the Marne, the naval maneuvers off Jutland, Verdun's "soul-stirring frenzy," and the surprising victory of Chemins des Dames. Here, too, he re-creates the dawn of modern warfare: the buzz of airplanes overhead, trench combat, artillery thunder, and the threat of chemical warfare. In … [Click Below for Full Description]

Schoedsack, Ernest B. (photographer, subject), Merian C. Cooper (subject)
N.p, 1927. Archive 163 vintage photographs by Ernest B. Schoedsack detailing expeditions taken by him and filmmaking partner Merian C. Cooper between 1922 and 1927, while the pair were also filming their groundbreaking documentary films "Grass: A Nation's Battle for Life" (1925) and "Chang: A Drama of the Wilderness" (1927). With handwritten captions identifying most of the photographs. Also included are two drafts of an article by Cooper about their travels, and a typed letter signed to Cooper from Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, as well as other ephemera. Schoedsack and Cooper are best known as the co-directors of "King Kong," an idea Cooper based on their real life travels, with the pair also serving as the basis for the characters of John Driscoll and Carl Denham. Prior to their work in Hollywood, the two helped pioneer the field of ethnographic documentary film, with only Robert Flaherty's "Nanook of the North" predating "Grass," something that they were not aware of as they were on location filming at the time of "Nanook's" release. Like Flaherty, Schoedsack and Cooper used a mix of candid filming and reenactments of traditional ways of life for the people they filmed. "Chang" was nominated for Best Unique and Artistic Picture at the first Academy Awards, the only year that award was presented, and 15 years before the creation of the Best Documentary category, while "Grass" was selected for the National Film Registry in 1997. The photographs are tipped onto the pages of five albums, each with a paper spine label and number. The first volume contains photographs of S … [Click Below for Full Description]

WIRTH (Oswald)

- MoMa 1022.

LOU S (Pierre).
Paris, Chez Sylvain Sauvage, 1927. (M.Valotaire). CARTERET, IV, 251: Belle édition recherchée et cotée. Wilder, Thornton
Albert & Charles Boni, New York, 1927. First edition of the author's masterpiece and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Octavo, original cloth, cartographic endpapers. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author, "For Vincent Starrett: with all the regard of Thornton Wilder Chicago April 1929." Laid in is a lecture pamphlet by Thornton Wilder, with the introduction done by Starrett. The recipient Vincent Starrett, was an American writer, newspaperman, and bibliophile. Starrett's signature and bookplate, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing and wear. Illustrated by Amy Drevenstedt. Housed in a custom cloth and chemise box. "Few novels identify their basic plotline as succinctly and forthrightly as the opening line of Thornton Wilder's 1927 novel, The Bridge of San Luis Rey: "On Friday noon, July the twentieth, 1714, the finest bridge in all Peru broke and precipitated five travelers into the gulf below." The novel's conceit is this: a certain Brother Juniper was himself about to step out onto the bridge when it broke and subsequently witnessed the plunge of five people into the abyss below. Brother Juniper wonders if the tragedy happened according to a divine plan or was simply a random instance of misfortune. His curiosity leads him to investigate the lives of the five victims to prove that the bridge collapse and the resulting deaths were indeed divine intervention-that God intended for them to die then and there. But, of course, the point of the novel is that there is no commonality among them, other than the fact that they are all simply human, with their ow … [Click Below for Full Description]
