Klemm, Walther
[Weimar?]. Twenty original signed woodcuts, plus a smaller woodcut on the upper wrapper. Folio (37 x 33.5 cm). Printed on folded Japanese paper, open-sewn in paper over limp wrappers. Upper wrapper neatly detached, with chipping to wrapper covering and a small burn mark, internally fine. An impressive sequence of woodcuts of wild and domestic animals and birds (one with an additional color), each signed below the image in pencil by Klemm (1883-1957). The front blank bears Klemm's 1927 gift inscription to his friend, fellow artist, woodcut master and illustrator, Emil Orlik, who he had met in Vienna. In 1913 Klemm joined the faculty at the Weimarer Kunsthochshule, and in the following decades illustrated a number of significant texts, along with producing individual prints and series. This series bears no explicit limitation, though a pencil shelf-number (?) appears in the corner of the first blank ('692/LXXV').

Artur Adson / Eduard Wiiralt cover design
Eesti Kirjanikkude Liit, Tallinn. Estonian language. Octavo 13 x 20 cm. Weight 140 gr. Wrappers, 77 [1] pp. Print run 600 copies. The Book is in Near Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Cover corners show slight fraying, soft creases across cover corners, one small brown stain on the back cover; internally very few occasional foxing spots. Current the fourth poetry collection includes poems written during 1921-1926. Here the main subjects of author’s previous works, such as candid love motives and childhood memories have been replaced with social problems depiction. Pessimism of young romantic poet arose after turning his gaze to the brutal egoism ideology of todays society, which is seeking immediate delights without thinking of eternal things. That’s why death and oblivison moods became prevalent in his verse, which sounds not overly morbid, but rather solemn. Poems are written in Võro dialect. This peculiar literary production was highly praised by critics and considered one of the best Adson’s works. Book’s great grotesque cover design by Wiiralt. Artur Adson (1889–1977) was an Estonian poet, writer and theatre critic. In 1927 he got married with most greatest poetess of Estonia – Marie Under. From 1917 Adson was a member of the Siuru literary movement, which exerted great influence on the Estonian literature. Later Adson was also active in the Tarapita movement. He is considered one of the most outstanding poets in the Võro language of southern Estonia. Great graphic cover design with elements of grotesque by Wiiralt. Hofbauer, Ludwig
Regensburg: Ludwig Rath, Verlagsbuchhandlung, 1927.. Octavo, pp. [1-4] 5 [6] 7 [8] 9-350 [351-352: ads], original orange cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black, top edge stained light green. First edition, first printing. A wild-and-wooly world catastrophe fantasy of racial and ideological conflict, with a secret organization of Asians and American Indians (The Yellow Wheel), headquartered in a Tibetan monastery, plotting to wipe out the decadent white civilization using an artificial plague. An alliance of German, Japanese and white North Americans (The Green Cross, under the direction of the novel's Japanese hero, Dr. Kitsura) uses hypnosis to break into the Tibetan laboratory and steal some of the plague germs in order to fabricate a vaccine. War breaks out and a third of the world's population is quickly killed; the rest are mutated into a kind of ageless condition. Vast refugee movements swirl around the globe. Europe degenerates into a primitive agrarian condition. Dr. Kitsura saves the day by locating a mystical book in California which proves that the Japanese and Indians have a common ancestry, prompting a reconciliation between the warring parties and the establishment of a worldwide matriarchal utopia. Clarke, Voices Prophesying War: Future Wars 1763-3749 (1992), p. 238. Bloch (2002) 1502. Not in Nagl. Cloth foxed, endpapers foxed, scattered foxing to text block, mostly early and late and to page edges, a very good copy. (#152272)

Buenos Aires, 1927. "Martín Fierro: a turning point in latin american avant garde literature". Small folio; 44 of 45 issues [some are double]; lacking issue # 21; original wrappers. Some restorations throughout. An original edition of this bi-weekly periodical that had a decisive influence on the Argentine literary milieu, the first number of which appeared in February 1924. Its first director was the poet and reporter Evar Méndez; this journal was a strong tribunal of the vanguard movements that developed in Europe; it particularly defended the principles of Ultraism of which Borges was a great supporter at the time; its pages documented all the changes and transformations that could be demonstrated in the artistic and literary processes of the period, principally in Europe, addressing the new architecture, the new literature, or the so-called revolutionary music. Ultraism and to a lesser degree Futurism and Creationism did not delay in imposing their tone and style. At the beginning of 1925 those adept at "free verse" joined Martín Fierro, almost all of them Ultraists, as if the rules of the new times had been imposed in a definitive fashion. The journal gained prestige with the publication of the poems and prose of such luminaries as J. L. Borges, Ricardo Güiraldes, Oliverio Girondo, Nicolás Olivari, and Raúl González Tuñón, to cite only the most notable contributors. A spirit of risk-taking, the apparent lack of reason, and Surrealism appear in each page. In its time, Martín Fierro was definitive in legitimizing works prohibited at the time, and it achieved in capturing … [Click Below for Full Description]

Breton, Nicholas
The First UK printing of this illustrated edition published by The Golden Cockerel Press in 1927. Number 180 of only 500 copies printed (of which 250 were for the USA). The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Free from erasures and inscriptions. Light fading to the edges and the spine which has slightly encroached onto the cover edges. Top edge gilt. Gilt titling to the spine remains bright. Light offsetting to the end papers. All the original tissue guards are present (some are loose) and there is some light offsetting from these to the adjoining pages. Copies appear with and without the tissue guards and there appears to be no precedence regarding this. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Light edge-wear and dust soiling with a small amount of loss at the spine ends. A very sharp example of a scarce wrapper which looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. Twelve wonderful wood engravings by Eric Ravilious for each month of the year. Scarce. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Prague: R. Rejman, 1927. Small octavo (16 × 11.4 cm). Original decorative wrappers; [40] leaves. A very good copy. Scarce collection of good-natured, but witty parodies of contemporary Czech political life, including the communists, fascists, republicans, workers and bourgeois, as well as leading figures of the Czech avant-garde, such as Teige (whose name appears in a funny "advertisement" for "the latest and best Parisian products", as well as in a satirical epitaph of Karel Teige, which explaines "teigeism" as a conglomerate of various -isms, such as "dadaismus, futurismus, konstruktivismus..." and, finally, "idiotismus." R. Rejman, Prague, 1927. Small octavo (16 × 11.4 cm). Original decorative wrappers; [40] leaves. A very good copy.
