Bright, clean covers with minimal signs of age ie a little rubbing and the odd bump. Internally the book is again very good throughout with the pictorial endpapers as called for. There is a neat inscription to the top of the half title page else the contents are clean and bright all the way through with one or two thumb marks. Nice tight hinges and margins on the whole with a hint of tugging where the book has been opened to read. Warren Retlaw (Walter Warren)
London: 1927. See Photographs and Description. The Youth and the Sage Warren Retlaw A Philosophical Poem in 95 Quatrains, Self published 1927 Illustrated by Austin Osman Spare together with a letter Warren Retlaw to George Bernard Shaw with Shaw's handwritten reply An interesting one page hand written letter from Warren Retlaw (dated 2nd August 1929) written to George Bernard Shaw with Shaw's somewhat terse six line reply (dated 3rd August 1929) added to the bottom of Retlaw's letter. The letter is thus signed by both Walter Warren | (Warren Retlaw) and George Bernard Shaw 28pp card covers, with frontispiece plate and decorative vignette by Austin Osman Spare -- additionally the foreword credits Spare for ". . . much advice and assistance". The rarest of all Austin Osman Spare books The book was printed at the Co-operative Printing Society, the workers co-op that was Spare's long term favourite choice for his printing work which must have made an interesting diversion from the co-op's usual fare of trade union materials. The tipped in frontispiece is a fine example of Spare's work and includes a self portrait and a profile which one imagines is "Retlaw" (Walter in fact). A decorative vignette features the profile of a young man with the shadow of an older fellow. The author states in the foreward that he left school at 13 to become an apprentice and it is no surprise that would champion the philosophic and mystical musings of a working man. Very scarce indeed . . . this copy is one of only six copies known to have survived!!!! Card covers -- no splits along the spine, some … [Click Below for Full Description]

T.E.Lawrence
London: Jonathan Cape, 1927. Missing dust jacket. Slight fading front and back cover. Book can be inspected prior to purchase. T. E. Lawrence, 'Revolt In The Desert' . Jonathan Cape, 1927, Quarto. Original quarter brown pigskin on sand buckram, title gilt to spine, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. A very good copy. Coloured portrait frontispiece and 10 other similar plates, 8 uncoloured plates, folding map at the rear. First English edition, large paper issue, limited to 315 numbered copies, of which 300 were for sale. The costs for production of the 1926 Seven Pillars of Wisdom had ballooned to such an extent that Lawrence was contemplating selling either his library or some of his property to clear the debt. Eventually he settled on an abridgement, undertaken in 1926 by Lawrence himself with the help of some of his fellow servicemen, an earlier attempt by Edward Garnett having been set aside. Published in March 1927 in Great Britain and America, in both limited and general issues, three impressions were soon sold out and two more quickly added. The profits from this publication made the fortunes of the Cape publishing house. This edition is lettered 167 The book may be viewed prior to purchase. If you have any queries, please contact us.
