HISTOIRE CHARMANTE DE L'ADOLESCENTE SUCRE D'AMOUR

Paris: F.-L. Schmied, 1927. FIRST EDITION. No. 50 OF 170 COPIES, SIGNED BY SCHMIED y. This is an excellent example of the impressive book arts productions of François-Louis Schmied (1873-1941), a man who raised Art Deco to its highest level in the field of bibliophile publishing in France and someone who generally was responsible (as here) for every aspect of the production of his books. He engraved all of the woodcut decorations and plates for "Histoire," and printed them himself as well as designed the layout of the text, which was printed with the assistance of his son Théo and P. Guillemat. The text here is a love story set in the Middle East, the work of Dr. Joseph-Charles Mardrus (1868-1949), who described himself as "Muslim by birth and Parisian by accident." Born in Egypt and educated in Lebanon, the physician and eminent Orientalist was a fixture in the intellectual circles of Paris, where he helped to inspire the rage for all things Oriental. He produced a well-received, unexpurgated translation of "One Thousand and One Nights," and was commissioned by the French government to produce a translation of the Koran. He gives full credit to Schmied for the realization of the present work in his inscription, which reads: "Dear Schmied, it is to please you that this unpublished text has been developed. Without you, without your enthusiasm, it would still be in nothingness. Your friend, J. C. M.". 318 x 241 mm. (12 1/2 x 9 1/2"). 8 p.l. (first four blank), 145 pp., [9] leaves (last four blank). FIRST EDITION. No. 50 OF 170 COPIES, SIGNED BY SCHMIED. Unbound as issued in original printed paper wrappers. With 14 full-page color wood engravings (including the frontispiece signed in pencil by Schmied) and 635 color panel borders, line fillers, and tailpieces in the Art Deco style, all by Schmied. Recto of limitations page with a facsimile inscription by the author to Schmied. Carteret IV, 263. Short ink mark to margin of title page, just the faintest isolated smudge or freckled foxing, otherwise a very fine copy, clean and fresh, with the fragile wrapper unsoiled and remarkably well preserved. This is an excellent example of the impressive book arts productions of François-Louis Schmied (1873-1941), a man who raised Art Deco to its highest level in the field of bibliophile publishing in France and someone who generally was responsible (as here) for every aspect of the production of his books.         Vorläufige Anzeige des Gesetzes, nach welchem Metalle die Contaktelektricität leiten" in Jahrbuch für Chemie und Physik 14, 1825, pp. 110-118 WITH "Bestimmung des Gesetzes, nach welchem Metalle die Contaktelektricität leiten, nebst einem Entwurfe zu einer Theorie des Voltaischen Apparates und des Schweiggerschen Multiplicators" in Jahrbuch für Chemie und Physik 16, 1826, pp. 137-166

FIRST EDITIONS (2 Volume) OF GEORG OHM'S FIRST & SECOND PAPERS, HERE BEGINNING A SERIES "of experiments documenting the voltage across and the current through simple electrical circuits containing various lengths of wire" (History of Science: The Wenner Collection). These papers lead directly to his seminal 1927 formulation theory of galvanic electricity, or Ohm's Law. Note that the first paper, Vorläufige, (V. 14) was published first in Schweigger's Journal fur Chemie und Physik while the second paper, also in Schweigger's (V. 16), was published simultaneously in Annalen der Physik as well - meaning that neither scholars nor collectors consider the Schweigger appearance of the second paper, Bestimmung, or the Annalen appearance of more import or worth than the other. " In the field of electrical measurement, Ohm was the great pioneer" ( PMM, 174). He began publishing his electricity researches in 1825 with the first paper: "Vorlaufige Anzeige des Gesetzes" offered here. In it, he "sought to find a functional relationship between the decrease in the electromagnetic force exerted by a current-carrying wire and the length of the wire. Although this paper contained some fundamental errors, it was remarkable for its direct foundation on experiment - the paper deduced clear mathematical relationships based purely on the experimental evidence that Ohm had tabulated; this would grow to be a defining characteristic of all Ohm's early papers (Jeremy Norman). In the second paper offered , Ohm presented the experimental proof of his law, "the fundamental law of electric circuits" (Dibner 63). "Ohm's experimental procedure in ["Bestimmung des Gesetzes"] was analogous to that which he had used earlier but was modified in several significant ways… He now used a thermoelectric pile in order to eliminate the fluctuations in current strength accompanying the voltaic pile, fluctuations that Ohm attributed to changes produced by the current in the distribution of the components in the liquid conductor. "Second, he sought a direct relationship between the electromagnetic force of the current and the entire length of the connecting wire. . . . [in] the paper in question Ohm simply observed that the data from each of his several sets of experiments were very closely represented by the formula X = a/(b + x), where X is the strength of the electromagnetic effect-which he took as a measure of the electric current-of a conductor of length x on the magnetic needle of a Coulomb torsion balance, and where a and b are constants the exact nature of which he proposed to determine from additional series of carefully controlled experiments. The observation that b remained constant for all series of experiments, whereas a varied with temperature, led Ohm to conclude that a depended solely on the electromotive force of the pile and b solely on the resistance of the remaining portion of the circuit, in particular that of the pile itself. He also observed that the electromotive force of the thermoelectric pile appeared to be exactly proportional to the temperature difference at its end points. . . . " "After reconfirming the validity of his law by a further series of experiments, Ohm exhibited its explanatory powers on some of the chief unsolved problems which had occupied scientists working on the pile; and he showed how it also cast light on a number of other previously reported but poorly understood experimental findings. . . . The fruitful application of Ohm's simple law to existing problems was an explanatory tour de force" (DSB, Vol. 10). CONDITION & DETAILS: 2 volumes. Halle: Journal für Chemie und Physik. 8vo. Volume 14: [2], 14, [496], 3, [2]. 3 plates. Volume 16: [2], 16, [496], 4, [2]. 3 large fold-out plates. Small stamp on title pages. Beautifully rebound in period goatskin over marbled paper; 5 raised bands at the spine with gilt-tooling and -lettering in the compartments. New endpapers. Minor toning within. Near fine condition.

Rare first and only Dutch edition (the second edition in any language, and the first to include illustrations in addition to maps) of a very colourful and influential eye-witness account of an important voyage around the world and especially along the Pacific coast of Mexico and South America, 1708 to 1711. Its story of the marooned Alexander Selkirk served (with Edward Cooke's account of the same voyage) as the basis for Defoe's 1719 Robinson Crusoe . Since the first edition of Rogers was not illustrated, the present plate of his party meeting Selkirk before his hut seems to be the world's first Robinson Crusoe illustration. With an old owner's name (Schuchardt) on the title-page. With water stains affecting about fifty leaves and small holes in a half-dozen leaves, some repaired. Good copy of the first illustrated edition of an exciting story of adventures at sea.

Diffraction of Electrons by a Crystal of Nickel", in Physical Review, volume 30, 6, December 1927

American Physical Society 1927 - DAVISSON, Clinton Joseph (1881-1959) and L.H. Germer.  "Diffraction of Electrons by a Crystal of Nickel", in Physical Review, volume 30, 6, December 1927, pp 705-741, in the issue of pp 705-978.  In the original wrappers, with a short tear in the upper and lower front-left wrappers.  A nice copy of an important paper.   “Change with wave theory of matter. De Broglie. Einstein. Confirmation by Davidson [sic]”. --in N. Bohr's notebook,in “Complementarity before uncertainty” by Sandro Petruccioli, Arch. Hist. Exact Sci. (2011) 65:591–624. Davisson (mentored by three Nobelists in J.J. Thomson, O. Richardson, and R. Milliken) and George P. Thomson would share the Nobel ten years later in 1937 this brilliant and famous work, "for the experimental discovery of the diffraction of electrons by crystals" (Nobel Prize website)_+_ “It was his due for an experimental result that had showed the wave nature of matter beyond any doubt, as assumed by Louis de Broglie in 1924 and whose solid conceptual foundation lay in the context of Schrödinger’s wave mechanics. In his Nobel Lecture, Davisson attributed to Walter Elsasser, a young student of physics in Göttingen, the merit of having been the first, in 1925, to draw attention to the fact that “beams of electrons like beams of light would exhibit the properties of waves, that scattered by an appropriate grating they would exhibit diffraction”. In short, the experimental demonstration of diffraction had decreed the physical existence of the electron waves.”--Petruccioli (above).__+__ "In the summer of 1926 Davisson attended a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science at Oxford. There he discussed his investigations of the scattering of the electrons with Max Born, James Franck, and others. For the first time he heard in detail about Louis de Broglie’s hypothesis that an electron possesses a wave nature and has a wavelength h/mv, where h is Planck’s constant, m the electron mass, and v the speed of the electron. The Oxford discussions persuaded Davisson that his experimental results were probably due to the effects of de Broglie waves. This interpretation of the earlier Davisson-Kunsman experiments had already been suggested, a year prior to the meeting, by Walter Elsasser, who carried out experiments himself, trying to confirm his point without success. Davisson knew of Elsasser’s suggestion but, failing to find any evidence of a wave phenomenon, dismissed it as irrelevant. Elsasser therefore had no influence on the course of Davisson’s experiments, and it was not until the Oxford conference that Davisson became fully aware of what his experimental results might reveal."__+__ "When Davisson returned from England, he and Germer began a systematic search for some sort of interference phenomenon, and in January 1927 they observed electron beams resulting from diffraction by a single crystal of nickel. The results were in good agreement with de Broglie’s prediction. For his confirmation of electron wavesDavisson shared the Nobel Prize in physics in 1937 with G. P. Thomson, who had independently confirmed electron waves by a different method."--Dictionary of Scientific Biography, pp 597-8. DSB lsits the following as the significant papers for publication in this area in 1927/8, listing the Physical Review paper ahead of NAS and Nature. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        FOR MAURICE: FIVE UNLIKELY STORIES

London: John Lane: The Bodley Head Limited, [1927].. Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v [vi-viii] ix-li [lii] [1-2] 3-223 [224: blank] 1-4: ads, original decorated olive-green cloth, front panel stamped in blind and gold, spine panel stamped in gold, top edge stained olive-green, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. First edition. The author's third and last collection of weird fiction, this one dedicated to Maurice Baring. It includes "Tanhuser and the Gods," one of the finest humorous fantasies, "Winthrop's Adventure," "The Virgin of the Seven Daggers," and two others, as well as a long, interesting introduction on the sources for the stories. Lee's weird fiction earned the praise of Montague Summers, who equated her talent to that of M. R. James. "Lee's stories are really in a category by themselves. Intelligent, amusingly ironic, imaginative, original, they deserve more than the passing attention that they have attracted." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, pp. 256-57. "Marsyas in Flanders" is a "fine antiquarian tale but too early to have been directly influenced by M. R. James (it was written in 1900)." - Pardoe, The James Gang, p. 11.       Moscow, 1927. 32 pp.: ill., port. 26x17,5 cm. Without a wrapper, pencil signature on the title page. Otherwise very good. Very rare. This prospectus is dedicated to the summer tour of 1927 of the Meyerhold Theatre. It includes portraits of the company, e.g. Vsevolod Meyerhold, Igor Il'insky, Zinaida Raikh, route (Baku, Tiflis, Krasnodar, Leningrad and others) and repertoire. Articles from theatre magazines and valuable photographs of set constructivist decorations and productions are provided for The Forest (by Ostrovsky), D.E., Professor Bobus, Mandat, Roar, China!, Revizor. Also the brochure includes articles on music in Revizor production and article titled «Spectator from the Red Army about Revizor at Meyerhold's». Vsevolod Meyerhold (1874-1940) was a Russian theatrical producer, director, and actor whose provocative experiments in nonrealistic theatre made him one of the productive forces in modern theatre. Meyerhold founded his own theatre in 1920, which was known from 1923 as the Meyerhold Theatre until 1938. He inspired revolutionary artists and filmmakers such as Sergei Eisenstein, who studied with him. In the early 1930s, when Joseph Stalin repressed all avant-garde art and experimentation, his works were proclaimed antagonistic and alien to the Soviet people. Before his death he was tortured and executed by the state (cleared of all charges in 1955). Worldcat locates copies in Harvard, Columbia, UCLA.
