Vellum over tan cloth boards with gilt ruling and the front cover and gilt lettering on the spine. This is one of a limited number of 172 copies printed. The book contains facsimile reproductions of the Papal Bulls of Donation, from 1493, granting territorial rights in the New World to the Spanish and Portuguese Empires, and the Treaty of Tordesillas. The contents include 130 plates reproduced in photogravure containing the original manuscripts, later copies and an extensive section of early 16th century maps pertaining to exploration of the Americas. The work contains 16 maps including the Cantino Map (1502), The Pilestrina Map (1503), The Munich-Portuguese Map (1519), The Robert Thorne Map (1527) and the Castiglioni Map of Ribero type (ca 1529). The book includes introductory text, explanatory notes and historical analysis from Paul Gottchalk. There are 14 pages of bibliographic notes at the back of the book. Binding with some bumping and rubbing to extremities, and some light smudging to the cloth. Spotting to the edges of the book block. Interior with minor sporadic foxing to the edges of some pages. Very Good. No. 356 of 600 copies (American edition). Folio, 33 by 26 cm. 127, [2] pp. 30 plates, mostly color plates, with lettered tissue guards. Other text illustrations, some of which are in color -- the color text illustrations are tipped in or mounted, as are a few plates. The binding has a moderate amount of soiling, wiht a light dampstain on the front and rear lower part of the cover -- this dampstain runs almost the entire length of the edge, and is about 3 cm to 6 cm in width, depending on where. A few other soil marks on the cover. Within, a light thin dampstain on a few early leaves, but otherwise clean, bright, etc. One blank leaf, upon which a plate is mounted, has a closed tear.

Spine an corners a little worn, some faint spotting to the first and final blank, small tear to the lower margin of first blank, very good condition overall. 10 large photographic prints mounted on black card, and 16 smaller photographic images on 8 plates at the rear. True first edition, copy number 1 of 225 copies on handmade paper signed by Ruskaja, this copy specially bound and additionally inscribed on the first blank, "A Benito Mussolini, ommagio di devozione e di infinita ammirazione, Jia Ruskaja, 11 Julio 1927, Roma". La danza come un modo di essere was republished the following year by Casa Editrice Aples, in a larger, though still limited, edition of 1,500 copies. That edition is now uncommon, but the first is truly rare; we can find no example of the 1927 edition in library holdings worldwide, nor any recorded at auction. The red morocco binding here is likely to be unique to Mussolini's special presentation copy. Jia Ruskaja, born Evgenija Borisenko (1902–1970), whose stage name simply means "I am Russian", was the daughter of a White Russian officer. She fled Russia in 1918 just after the October Revolution. After studies in Geneva and a failed marriage to an Englishman in Constantinople, she settled in Rome and devoted herself to dance. She had her debut on 4 June 1921, and swiftly became a prominent proponent of the "free dance" movement introduced by Isadora Duncan, dancing at the Teatro degli Indipendenti throughout the 1920s before opening her own ballet school in Milan at the Teatre dal Verme in 1929. By 1932 she was promoted to the charge of the Teatro della Scala ballet school, and in 1940 her own school was recognised by the state as the Regia Scuola di Danza (from 1948 named the Academia Nazionale di Danza), for which she acted as founding director until her death. "There is little doubt that the frequent visits and the presence in Italy of companies and personalities such as Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, Isadora Duncan, Ida Rubinstein, Bella Hunter, Mary Wigman and Jia Ruskaja, channelled the interest of Italian theatre-goers away from such a culturally sterile form of national choreography. Some of those 'innovative' foreign inputs, moreover, were soon destined to become official manifestations of the Fascist regime's politically pre-determined culture. The allegedly negative effect of Fascist culture on the Italian ballet tradition is much debated among Italian dance scholars and has yet to be fully ascertained. Some claim that, by supporting other forms of dance such as the 'free' and neo-classically inspired style promoted by Jia Ruskaja, and by forcing eminent supporters of the ballet to move abroad, Mussolini's regime gave a deadly blow to what was left of the once-acclaimed art form. Others point out that it was under the Fascist regime that two important ballet institutions were created in Rome, such as the Opera Ballet School (1928) and the Regia Scola di Danza (Royal School of Dance) (1940)" (Grau). This is a compelling association copy for the history of dance in Italy, connecting one of its most modernising proponents to the head of state, and revealing the manner by which parts of futurist culture was promoted under Mussolini's fascist regime.         First Crossing of the Polar Sea.

      New York: George H. Doran Company, 1927. First edition of this classic work. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by Lincoln Ellsworth on the front free endpaper, "To Mrs. Spencer H. Smith, with the kindest regards of Lincoln Ellsworth 9 Nov. 1927." In near fine condition with light rubbing. Desirable signed and inscribed. The first expedition to reach the geographic South Pole was led by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. He and four others arrived at the pole on 14 December 1911,[n 1] five weeks ahead of a British party led by Robert Falcon Scott as part of the Terra Nova Expedition. Amundsen and his team returned safely to their base, and later learned that Scott and his four companions had died on their return journey. Amundsen's initial plans had focused on the Arctic and the conquest of the North Pole by means of an extended drift in an icebound ship. He obtained the use of Fridtjof Nansen's polar exploration ship Fram, and undertook extensive fundraising. Preparations for this expedition were disrupted when, in 1909, the rival American explorers Frederick Cook and Robert E. Peary each claimed to have reached the North Pole. Amundsen then changed his plan and began to prepare for a conquest of the South Pole; uncertain of the extent to which the public and his backers would support him, he kept this revised objective secret. When he set out in June 1910, he led even his crew to believe they were embarking on an Arctic drift, and revealed their true Antarctic destination only when Fram was leaving their last port of call, Madeira. Amundsen made his Antarctic base, which he named "Framheim", in the Bay of Whales on the Great Ice Barrier. After months of preparation, depot-laying and a false start that ended in near-disaster, he and his party set out for the pole in October 1911. In the course of their journey they discovered the Axel Heiberg Glacier, which provided their route to the polar plateau and ultimately to the South Pole. The party's mastery of the use of skis and their expertise with sledge dogs ensured rapid and relatively trouble-free travel. Other achievements of the expedition included the first exploration of King Edward VII Land and an extensive oceanographic cruise. The expedition's success was widely applauded, though the story of Scott's heroic failure overshadowed its achievement in the United Kingdom. Amundsen's decision to keep his true plans secret until the last moment was criticized by some. Recent polar historians have more fully recognized the skill and courage of Amundsen's party; the permanent scientific base at the pole bears his name, together with that of Scott.

Lunacharskii, apart from Trotsky, the only true intellectual amongs the Bolsheviks, art connaisseur and writer on the arts directed this beautiful and rare publication celebrating the October Revolution in the arts, and opened this volume with an essay on the performing arts, especially theatre and cinema. The vignettes and book design is by Sergey Chekhonin (1878-1936), industrial designer, graphic artist and ceramicist, who was the artistic director of the State Porcelain Factory in Leningrad. Péret schrieb das fünfteilige Gedicht aus den Erfahrungen heraus, die er in gemeinsamen Hypnosesitzungen mit Robert Desnos und René Crevel sammeln konnte. Very rare second edition of a pioneering Dutch renaissance poem on shells, comparable to Huygens's much later and much better known Hofwijck (1653). "If we compare both poets, Huygens has more to say and has a lot more twists than the repetitive Philibert, but the latter is nevertheless more poetic. Van Borssele sees with a painter's eye, speaks more beauty, is more courageous and less forced in his images and epithets, and gives more warmth to his verse" (Knuttel). Van Borsselen based his poems on the collection of shells of his brother-in-law, Cornelis Van Blijenburgh (1545-1618), but it's much more than just a dry enumeration and description. The poem was probably written before 1600 and first published in 1611. Both editions are equally rare. Blank reverse of coloured title page signed by both the author and editor-publisher, J. Azari, in green ink. First edition of this celebrated artist book expressing the essence of futurism. It represents a fusion of Depero’s work in painting, sculpture, architecture, theatre, decoration, but above all his experimental graphics and typography for the early publications of the futurist movement. The concept of using 2 bolts and nuts for uniting this striking compilation makes it an extraordinary creative object per se. The editor’s novel idea is expressed in the printed caption between the bolts ‘rilegatura Dinamo creazione Azari’ (refastened by Dinamo created by Azari). The artist himself called it ‘Libro Imbullonato’ (the ‘Bolted Book’). The geometric illustration on the front cover represents a frontispiece in reverse. The book is considered one of 4 fundamental works on Italian futurism. This copy is no 39 of 1000 copies printed as indicated in an editorial stamp on reverse of title. Fortunato Depero (1892-1960), painter, sculptor, costume and graphic designer, grew up and first exhibited in Rovereto, where this book was printed. He had joined the futurist movement in 1914 on meeting Giacomo Balla in Rome, composing the futurist manifesto with him in 1915. He founded the House of Futurism in Rovereto in 1919 and he represented futurism at the International Exhibition of Modern Industrial & Decorative Arts in 1925. At the age of thirteen, she attended Western University in Kansas City, Kansas where she studied poetry and oratory. In addition to singing in Western's concert choir, she gained experience coaching several of the University's male and female choral groups. Jessye moved to New York in 1926. There she conducted and directed a spirituals, jazz, and light opera choir called the Dixie Jubilee Singers. Under her direction, the group, later named the Eva Jessye Choir, enjoyed a successful career which lasted more than thirty years. She collaborated in productions of groundbreaking works, directing her choir and working with Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein on Four Saints in Three Acts (1933), and serving as musical director with George Gershwin on his innovative opera Porgy and Bess (1935). Jessye and her choir toured with Porgy and Bess, earning her international acclaim. In 1963 the Eva Jessye Choir was the official choral group for the Martin Luther King March on Washington. In addition to conducting, Jessye also published a book titled MY SPIRITUALS (1927), inspired by the folk music of her childhood. Her acting credits include such onstage roles as Strawberry Woman in Porgy and Bess, and Queenie in Showboat. She was seen in films including Black Like Me (1964) and Slaves (1969). Pencil markings on the score card, comments about preliminary bouts, the owner of the card gave Tunney 7 of the 10 rounds. Adverts throughout, short articles on the Field Museum, Art Institute, State Athletic Commission, George Getz (promoter of the fight). This fight was a rematch of the fight a year previously, won by Tunney by a ten round unanimous decision. This fight will be remembered at "The Long Count Fight", where the referee did not start counting on the downed Tunney because Dempsey did not go to a neutral corner. The fight was ultimately won by Tunney in a unanimous decision. It was Dempsey's last career fight, and Tunney's penultimate fight.
