With engraved frontispiece, 5 folding engraved maps, 4 full-page engraved plates (views). Modern half morocco.

Alden & Landis 715/148 (4 copies); Muller, America 1927; Sabin 18386 & 72761; Tiele, Bibl. 291; STCN (1 copy). Rare first and only Dutch edition (the second edition in any language, and the first to include illustrations in addition to maps) of a very colourful and influential eye-witness account of an important voyage around the world and especially along the Pacific coast of Mexico and South America, 1708 to 1711. Its story of the marooned Alexander Selkirk served (with Edward Cooke's account of the same voyage) as the basis for Defoe's 1719 Robinson Crusoe . Since the first edition of Rogers was not illustrated, the present plate of his party meeting Selkirk before his hut seems to be the world's first Robinson Crusoe illustration. With an old owner's name (Schuchardt) on the title-page. With water stains affecting about fifty leaves and small holes in a half-dozen leaves, some repaired. Good copy of the first illustrated edition of an exciting story of adventures at sea.

Diffraction of Electrons by a Crystal of Nickel", in Physical Review, volume 30, 6, December 1927

American Physical Society 1927 - DAVISSON, Clinton Joseph (1881-1959) and L.H. Germer.  "Diffraction of Electrons by a Crystal of Nickel", in Physical Review, volume 30, 6, December 1927, pp 705-741, in the issue of pp 705-978.  In the original wrappers, with a short tear in the upper and lower front-left wrappers.  A nice copy of an important paper.   “Change with wave theory of matter. De Broglie. Einstein. Confirmation by Davidson [sic]”. --in N. Bohr's notebook,in “Complementarity before uncertainty” by Sandro Petruccioli, Arch. Hist. Exact Sci. (2011) 65:591–624. Davisson (mentored by three Nobelists in J.J. Thomson, O. Richardson, and R. Milliken) and George P. Thomson would share the Nobel ten years later in 1937 this brilliant and famous work, "for the experimental discovery of the diffraction of electrons by crystals" (Nobel Prize website)_+_ “It was his due for an experimental result that had showed the wave nature of matter beyond any doubt, as assumed by Louis de Broglie in 1924 and whose solid conceptual foundation lay in the context of Schrödinger’s wave mechanics. In his Nobel Lecture, Davisson attributed to Walter Elsasser, a young student of physics in Göttingen, the merit of having been the first, in 1925, to draw attention to the fact that “beams of electrons like beams of light would exhibit the properties of waves, that scattered by an appropriate grating they would exhibit diffraction”. In short, the experimental demonstration of diffraction had decreed the physical existence of the electron waves.”--Petruccioli (above).__+__ "In the summer of 1926 Davisson attended a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science at Oxford. There he discussed his investigations of the scattering of the electrons with Max Born, James Franck, and others. For the first time he heard in detail about Louis de Broglie’s hypothesis that an electron possesses a wave nature and has a wavelength h/mv, where h is Planck’s constant, m the electron mass, and v the speed of the electron. The Oxford discussions persuaded Davisson that his experimental results were probably due to the effects of de Broglie waves. This interpretation of the earlier Davisson-Kunsman experiments had already been suggested, a year prior to the meeting, by Walter Elsasser, who carried out experiments himself, trying to confirm his point without success. Davisson knew of Elsasser’s suggestion but, failing to find any evidence of a wave phenomenon, dismissed it as irrelevant. Elsasser therefore had no influence on the course of Davisson’s experiments, and it was not until the Oxford conference that Davisson became fully aware of what his experimental results might reveal."__+__ "When Davisson returned from England, he and Germer began a systematic search for some sort of interference phenomenon, and in January 1927 they observed electron beams resulting from diffraction by a single crystal of nickel. The results were in good agreement with de Broglie’s prediction. For his confirmation of electron wavesDavisson shared the Nobel Prize in physics in 1937 with G. P. Thomson, who had independently confirmed electron waves by a different method."--Dictionary of Scientific Biography, pp 597-8. DSB lsits the following as the significant papers for publication in this area in 1927/8, listing the Physical Review paper ahead of NAS and Nature. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v [vi-viii] ix-li [lii] [1-2] 3-223 [224: blank] 1-4: ads, original decorated olive-green cloth, front panel stamped in blind and gold, spine panel stamped in gold, top edge stained olive-green, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. It includes "Tanhuser and the Gods," one of the finest humorous fantasies, "Winthrop's Adventure," "The Virgin of the Seven Daggers," and two others, as well as a long, interesting introduction on the sources for the stories. Lee's weird fiction earned the praise of Montague Summers, who equated her talent to that of M. R. James. "Lee's stories are really in a category by themselves.         [EXPERIMENTAL THEATER GOES ACROSS THE SOVIET UNION] Gosudarstvenny teatr imeni Vs. Meierholda. Gastrol'naia poezdka po SSSR. Leto 1927 [i.e. Tour Across the USSR. Summer of 1927]

Moscow, 1927. 32 pp.: ill., port. 26x17,5 cm. Without a wrapper, pencil signature on the title page. Otherwise very good. Very rare. This prospectus is dedicated to the summer tour of 1927 of the Meyerhold Theatre. It includes portraits of the company, e.g. Vsevolod Meyerhold, Igor Il'insky, Zinaida Raikh, route (Baku, Tiflis, Krasnodar, Leningrad and others) and repertoire. Articles from theatre magazines and valuable photographs of set constructivist decorations and productions are provided for The Forest (by Ostrovsky), D.E., Professor Bobus, Mandat, Roar, China!, Revizor. Also the brochure includes articles on music in Revizor production and article titled «Spectator from the Red Army about Revizor at Meyerhold's». Vsevolod Meyerhold (1874-1940) was a Russian theatrical producer, director, and actor whose provocative experiments in nonrealistic theatre made him one of the productive forces in modern theatre. Meyerhold founded his own theatre in 1920, which was known from 1923 as the Meyerhold Theatre until 1938. He inspired revolutionary artists and filmmakers such as Sergei Eisenstein, who studied with him. In the early 1930s, when Joseph Stalin repressed all avant-garde art and experimentation, his works were proclaimed antagonistic and alien to the Soviet people. Before his death he was tortured and executed by the state (cleared of all charges in 1955). Worldcat locates copies in Harvard, Columbia, UCLA.

Original wrappers of the plates volume expertly repaired. Text and captions in French. Binding and interior in overall very good condition. About the author: Max van Berchem (1863-1921) was a Swiss epigraphist and historian. Best known as a pioneer of Arabic epigraphy, he created "Corpus Inscriptionum Arabicarum," an impressive collection of Arabic inscriptions gathered during his scientific expeditions to Egypt, Jerusalem, Palestine, and Syria. Being aware of the enormity of this project, he divided the work amongst others, mostly French and German scholars, with Berchem, for the most part, limiting his personal investigations to the cities of Cairo, Jerusalem and Damascus. In his work, he used photography as a means to record Arabic inscriptions. Between 1895 and 1914, he dedicated most of his time and energy towards the publication of the large amount of textual material that he had accumulated. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
