About EVA JESSYE (from Wikipedia): ******Eva Jessye was a pioneer in the world of African American music and is recognized as the First Black Woman To Receive International Distinction As A Choral Conductor. She was born in Coffeyville, Kansas on January 20, 1895. Soon she developed a love of traditional Negro spirituals. At the age of thirteen, she attended Western University in Kansas City, Kansas where she studied poetry and oratory. In addition to singing in Western's concert choir, she gained experience coaching several of the University's male and female choral groups. Jessye moved to New York in 1926. There she conducted and directed a spirituals, jazz, and light opera choir called the Dixie Jubilee Singers. Under her direction, the group, later named the Eva Jessye Choir, enjoyed a successful career which lasted more than thirty years. She collaborated in productions of groundbreaking works, directing her choir and working with Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein on Four Saints in Three Acts (1933), and serving as musical director with George Gershwin on his innovative opera Porgy and Bess (1935). Jessye and her choir toured with Porgy and Bess, earning her international acclaim. In 1963 the Eva Jessye Choir was the official choral group for the Martin Luther King March on Washington. In addition to conducting, Jessye also published a book titled MY SPIRITUALS (1927), inspired by the folk music of her childhood. Her acting credits include such onstage roles as Strawberry Woman in Porgy and Bess, and Queenie in Showboat. She was seen in films including Black Like Me (1964) and Slaves (1969). In addition to honorary doctorates from several major universities, Jessye was awarded a Doctor of Determination Certificate from the University of Michigan's Department of African American Studies in 1976. Kansas governor Robert Bennett declared October 1, 1978 EVA JESSYE DAY and in 1982 she was named the KANSAS AMBASSADOR FOR THE ARTS by Governor John Carlin.****** Good .

THE WORLD'S HEAVY WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP OFFICIAL SOUVENIR

Pencil markings on the score card, comments about preliminary bouts, the owner of the card gave Tunney 7 of the 10 rounds. This fight was a rematch of the fight a year previously, won by Tunney by a ten round unanimous decision. This fight will be remembered at "The Long Count Fight", where the referee did not start counting on the downed Tunney because Dempsey did not go to a neutral corner. The fight was ultimately won by Tunney in a unanimous decision. It was Dempsey's last career fight, and Tunney's penultimate fight. A fine piece of boxing ephemera, this program was actually at the fight!!! Size: Quarto [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Revolt in the Desert.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1927. Quarto. Original brown quarter pigskin, title gilt to spine, tan buckram sides, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Coloured portrait frontispiece, 10 coloured plates, 8 black and white plates, folding map at rear. A little rubbing to edges; an excellent copy. First edition, large paper issue, number 127 of 315 numbered copies, of which 300 were for sale. The costs for production of the 1926 Seven Pillars of Wisdom had ballooned to such an extent that Lawrence was contemplating selling either his library or some of his property to clear the debt. Eventually he settled on the publication of an abridgement, undertaken in 1926 by Lawrence himself with the help of some of his fellow servicemen, an earlier attempt by Edward Garnett having been set aside. Published in March 1927 in Great Britain and America, in both limited and general issues, three impressions were soon sold out and two more quickly added. The profits from this publication made the fortunes of the Cape publishing house. Laid-in is a promotional bookseller's flyer.

        Vingt-Cinq Costumes pour le Théâtre

Paris: Bloch and Meynial, 1927. Limited First Edition. Heavy Wrappers. . Very Good Plus/Good. No. 185 of 275 copies. 4to. 32 by 24 cm. 25 tipped-in pochoir costume plates by Barbier. Lettered tissue guards. Colas 218. The artwork is all dated to the early post-World War One period, into the early 1920s. Captured here is the fantasy spun by the costuming, so at odds with the parsimonious theatrical zeitgeist of the present when it seems so much of classic theater and opera is willfully updated to the unglamorous present day. Not that the costumes here are entirely unrelated to the then contemporary styles -- one can discern the cross-fertilization of costuming with fashion effortlessly, though, through Barbier's fluent presentation. Barbier focuses on the escapist element of theater, and his renderings usher us on this excursion. The plays represented include works by Rostand and Hugo, among others. Original pictorial wrappers. Closed tear of joints by extremities, with the longer tear at the base (about 6 cm in length). Glassine dust jacket mostly intact, but with several tears and chips, especially by the lower portion of the rear cover, and then by the spine extremities and neighboring joints. Frontis portrait of Barbier has flattened cornered crease. Otherwise, the plates, most importantly, are very clean and bright.

Archive of Manuscript Letters and Papers of Distinguished Engineer George Remington of Warkworth, Pertaining to Engineering Works.

England, 1827-1898., 1927. Archive of manuscript letters and papers of distinguished engineer George Remington of Warkworth, comprising mainly correspondence received by him, and his own retained draft letters to others, the lot pertaining to engineering works, Features one signed letter from Scottish engineer James Leslie, and one from Sir Richard Tufton, Earl of Thanet. Letters and documents range in size and form. Some age-toning and chips at extremities, otherwise overall in very good condition. George Remington was an accomplished civil engineer of Warkworth, Northumberland, best remembered for his London and Manchester Railway Company pioneering under which he pioneered the 'independent' line often called Remington's Line, and also for his early proposals for an English Channel Rail Tunnel. In the 1830s and 1840s he partnered with engineer John Rennie on several important projects, some of which include, in 1837 making a ground survey for a ship canal to render Chester an efficient port for large vessels, in the 1840s inspections and planning for a railway tunnel across the English Channel, for other railway projects such as the Sheffield and Staffordshire Railway, and the Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire Junction Railway, and for harbour developments and improvements. By the 1860s his son began working at his firm, George Remington and Son. His contemporaries called him "the first in the field on the direct and independent principle [of railway building]" although he also contributed greatly in harbour projects, tramways, and in pioneering concepts for the Channel Tunnel. The present lot of correspondence, accompanied by one printed proposal and a few news announcements, reveals important considerations in engineering and construction of urban infrastructure, much of which continue to resonate today, including early environmental issues, defenses against nature's untamable forces, and even politics. British engineer George Remington spearheaded several notable communications works.. Manuscript.

Photograph album with views of Canberra, circa 1927

Art Deco style large quarto album, original brown cloth boards, upper board with decorative device and title Photographsin gilt, contemporary manuscript paper title label to spine New Zealand, s.s. Taiping, Canberra, containing [97] window-mounted (i.e. removable) sepia carbon print photographs on card, in uniform format 120 x 165 mm, including views of Canberra (10), New Zealand (61), Thursday Island and North Queensland (13), Melbourne (1), Sydney (1), Ballarat (3), Goolwa (1), Manila (6), Japan (1); paper labels with the photographer's own manuscript captions are pasted onto the album leaves beneath each image; the album is exceptionally well preserved, all the carbon prints being in flawless condition and with excellent tonal range, the album leaves completely free from foxing. Although this is an album of private travel photographs, the unidentified photographer was quite possibly a professional. The images were taken using an extremely high quality camera: the focus, exposure, and composition display a consistently accomplished level of technical skill and a strong artistic sense, and the expensive carbon print medium - one employed with spectacular results by pictorialist photographers in the early twentieth century - produces beautiful soft tones and permanent, undegraded prints. The ten photographs of Canberra include views of Ainslie Church; the headstone of Sarah and George Webb in the Ainslie Churchyard with its "prophecy" about a future city; seven views of or from Parliament House; and a view of the site for the proposed "theatre and cathedral".

Choice Autograph letter signed by Henrietta Szold to Elisha Friedman regarding the Zionist Organization of America and its early efforts to secure life members

New York, NY: , July 28, 1927. New York, NY, July 28, 1927. 5.5X9. "Autograph letter signed ""Henrietta Szold"", one page, 5½"" x 9"", on stationary of the Hotel Alexandria, July 28, 1927, New York, NY, addressed to Elisha Friedman.Szold writes: ""Am I wrong in assuming that you expressed at least individual approval of the plan of discharging the deficit of the Zionist Organization of America as a first step towards making it an effective instrument for Palestinian work, when I spoke to you at the Physician's Dinner? At all events, I venture to ask whether you will help us do what we have undertaken by becoming a life member of the Organization? The plan is to secure two thousand such life members at $100 each. That will cover the deposit of $156,000 and give us a small reserve out of the interest on which we can supplement our normal revenues. Will you help?…"" A steadfast and loyal Zionist, Friedman was a member of the American Economic Committee for Palestine, on the Board of the American Friends of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and on the Finance Committee of the Palestine Endowment Funds and the Hadassah Medical Organization.         The etchings of Norman Lindsay

London : Constable & Co., 1927. Folio, gilt-lettered blue buckram (spine faded, one corner slightly bumped), top edge gilt, 45 leaves of plates with accompanying title leaf, each a fine photogravure reproduction of a Norman Lindsay etching, occasional foxing. Limited to 129 copies of which 120 were for sale, signed and numbered by Norman Lindsay. A de luxe edition of 31 copies with the original etching 'Your Fate' was also issued. The etchings of Norman Lindsay, published in lavish large format, was admired by Lindsay himself 'as a facsimile perfect as reproduction can be' (from a 1938 letter to Andrew Watt), and '[it] remains one of the most tantalising collections of his work' (BLOOMFIELD, Lin. The complete etchings of Norman Lindsay, Odana 1998, p 65). Lindsay's popularity in the 1920s had risen meteorically, so that the very restricted print run of only 160 copies over two editions fell far short of the market's demands. The book sold out a month prior to publication, dissapointing many prominent collectors including Howard Hinton in New England. Only a handful of copies made it to Austraila, due to it selling out in London, as well as the fact that Australian customs held the two copies sent to Gill's Fine Art Society on the grounds that it was an immoral publication. Bloomfield notes that many copies have been broken to sell the plates: as early as 1938 the reproductions were selling for 21 shilling each, prompting her to observe that 'The Etchings of Norman Lindsay has become the rarest of any of Norman's books'. This statement is supported by a quote from George Mackaness, who wrote in 1965: '... within my knowledge only one copy of this has ever appeared in any Australian or British bookseller's catalogue or at auction'. A handful of copies have been sold since then, but The etchings of Norman Lindsay remains one of his most sumptuous and rare large scale publications.

In The Ring And Out [Inscribed By Jack Johnson To Ralph Capone, Brother Of Al Capone]]

Chicago: National Sports Publishing Company, 1927. First Edition. Red Cloth. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. Photographs. Inscribed By Jack Johnson. 259 Pp. Red Ribbed Cloth, Gilt. Some Wear, Spine Gilt Present But Weak, Pages Browning,A Few Small Water Spot On Front Cover And One On Rear Cover, Inscribed To Ralph (Capone). Autobiography Of Jack Johnson, [1878-1946), Prizefighter. "Despite The Tissue Of Untruths That Fill In The Ring-And Out, Jack Johnson's 1927 Autobiography, There Is Little Doubt That Even Here He Remained Unyieldingly The Auteur Of His Own Mythology, That Is, On The One Indisputably True Claim He Made About The Book. He Wrote The Book Himself, Without A Ghost-Writer. He Is One Of Only, At Best, A Handful Of Star Athletes Who Can Say That." [Oxford Companion To African American Literature.] From The Library Of Sportswriter Art Cohn, Who Famously Criticisms Of Racial Preferences In Sports And Published Strong Criticisms Of Avery Brundage And The U. S. Olympic Committee On Their Behalf. "Art Dedicated His Career To Making Sports Truly All-American..." This Copy Inscribed "To Ralph My Friend From A Fair Heavyweight Jack Johnson." Johnson Opened The Club De Luxe In New York In 1920; This Became The Cotton Club When Taken Over By Owney Madden In 1923, And Ralph Capone, Brother Of Al Capone, Later Opened A Chicago Branch Of The Club. One Might Fairly State That Ralph Capone Was The Only Person Known Throughout Chicago As Just "Ralph" At That Time, And Johnson Usually Inscribed His Books With Both A First And Last Name Of The Recipient, And Only Ralph Capone Was Well Known Enough To Be Addressed Only As "Ralph". Records Show That Johnson Knew Many Of The Famous Gangsters Of The 1920'S Thru 1940'S, So This May Have Been Inscribed To Ralph Capone; Iif It Was Inscribed To Capone, It May Be The Only Book Ever Inscribed To Him. Worn But Solid, Hinges Tight, Spine Gilt Present But Weak, Point Of Fraying At Top Of Rear Spine Edge, A Few Small Light Damp Spots, No Other Names Or Marks. No Dust Jacket.

        La Nouvelle lanterne

NL 1927 - PLANHOL (René de). La Nouvelle lanterne. Paris, NL, 1927-1937. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Films Paramount. Livre D'Or Saison 1927-1928

Paris: Societe Anonyme Francaise des Films Paramount. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Scarce movie studio promotion, with only copy recorded on OCLC at the BNF. Folio, 38 by 28 cm. Unpaginated, but four pages devoted to each of 42 productions slated for the season. Each of the productions has one full page color plate -- essentially a movie poster mock-up -- and one or two tinted pages with photo images from the upcoming production. Most of the movies are from Hollywood, but there are a few French productions. At the time, Paramount was the largest and most powerful studio, and this lavish promotion, intended for exhibitors, was issued probably right before the release of "The Jazz Singer" and the movie industry was thrown into turmoil. Thus it came out at the precise moment bullish confidence was at its zenith, and in terms of silent movies, the industry had settled into some maturity, soon of course to be shaken. Many of the stars on the Paramount roster then remain well-known to this day, at least by movie afficianados, and a good number of them went on to substantial careers in the thirties and beyond in sound movies: Adolph Menjou, Bebe Daniels, Wallace Beery, Gloria Swanson, Warner Baxter, to name a few. Others are now more solidly associated with Silents, such as Harold Lloyd, Pola Negri and Clara Bow, although they all did make the transition to sound pictures. Visually, a highlight is a color plate of a movie theatre lobby, an image that captures the opulence, pretension and spirit of the commercial film industry in the late twenties. A fun, colorful, flamboyant and informative work for a serious movie buff. The cover has a bronzed surface, with blindstamping of the title, the Paramount insignia, etc. Restorations to the joints. Clean within.
