      Paris: Éditions Excelsior, 1927. First edition in part. . Hard cover. Very Good/Career diplomat Paul Claudel composed this collection of poetic essays while he was the French ambassador in Tokyo, in the mid 1920s. A deep thinker, writer, and essayist, Claudel achieved here an allusive essay style that he felt was in complete accord with Japanese poetry and painting, employing discontinuity, juxtaposition, and crafted phrases. This edition, which includes some material not published by Gallimard in the same year, is the deluxe limited issue illustrated by Foujita, one of only 61 copies that include the full complement of 20 colored engravings. The unique binding, although unfinished, is perhaps the heaviest quarto binding on record.. Quarto (25cm); 148 pages, and 20 colored engraved plates by Foujita; folded folio sheet of "concrete" composition by Claudel bound in at end; front wrap in colors by Foujita bound in. One of sixty on Japan Imperial with 20 plates by Foujita (in the entire edition of 546, the second sixty, on Van Gelder, have only 15 plates, and the rest of the run only 12). Remarkable binding of black lacquered metal (over a very heavy fill), with six silver bars applied to upper board, framing a central panel, probably intended to accept a contrasting metal bar or stone. The binding alone weighs an estimated eight and a half pounds (four kilos)! Two sets of endleaves: front free endpapers in thin leather veneer, followed by two leaves of silver-green marbled paper.         A Collection of Motivational Poster Cards (Poster Sales Letters)

      Chicago. C.J. Howard. 1927. Collection is contained in original imprinted cardboard C.J. Howard packaging box. 7"x4.75" when closed (horizontal folding card).7"x9.5" when opened. Each card presents a striking Art Deco multicolored lithograph and various coloured borders and decorations printed upon folded heavy card stock. Early in the 1920s Charles Mather, who worked for his family’s Chicago printing house, the Mather Company, took an idea brought to him by one of the firm’s salesmen, Charles Howard Rosenfeld. What Rosenfeld proposed was a series of posters whose focus was to give workers incentive to work better and to work harder. Mather called these prints, “Constructive Organization Posters.” These posters were made to be placed on office and factory walls and were expected to inspire workers to do their best. & Mather sold his posters by subscription and produced more than 300 varieties between 1923 and 1929.In 1925 Rosenfeld and another employee broke from Mather to form their own company, the C. J. Howard Company, to sell incentive cards to be displayed on desks in a re-useable easel. & These cards and posters were printed as multicolored lithographs to produce easily readable images accompanied by tagline messages promoting such admirable qualities as teamwork, punctuality, loyalty, and safety." -Rockwell Museum& & "At the dawn of the 20th century, managers had been skeptical about using visual images as communication tools because their appeals to the emotions contradicted prevailing Protestant notions of self-discipline. By deploying motivational posters and illustrated booklets managers began to loosen their former dependence on rationalism and to explore the potential of aesthetics to regulate the emotional environment. In doing so they honed their abilities to define the “correct” forms of selfhood in the factory and to habituate workers to the kinds of values and behaviors that managers deemed appropriate and necessary for the harmonization of workplace relations.       Paris: Les Livres de Louis Jou. 1927. One of 225 copies on papier verge from a total issue of 258 copies. Page size: 10 7/8 x 7 5/8 "; 26.5 x 19.3 mm. Bound by LOUIS JOU: hand-painted vellum binding the title in red broken by an elaborate intertwining vine in heavy gold gilt, a single vine border repeated at top and bottom of front cover, author and title in red on spine separated with gilt leaves, gilt vine rondel on back panel. Top edge gilt, original wrappers bound in, fine. & Louis Jou (1882-1968), although born in Spain, spent most of his life in Paris creating beautiful books. Calling himself "artisan" not "maitre" Jou was nonetheless a master craftsman and designer of books. His type designs, woodcuts, and printing put him in the front ranks of great printers of the twentieth century. He designed few bindings to accompany his books, but those that do exist attest to his art there as well as on the interior of the book. SONNETS POUR HELENE is printed in red and black throughout and each page has numerous type ornaments and four woodcut initials on each page.       Paris: Les Livres de Louis Jou, 1927. Folio. 152 pp. From an edition of 258 copies, this one of 225 on papier vergé. Illustrated with a woodcut portrait of the author on the title-page as well as numerous woodcut headlines, tail pieces, and initial letters all by Louis Jou. Specially bound in full vellum over boards, most likely by Jou (he at least provided the design), although the binding may have been a collaboration with Georges Cretté. The title is calligraphed on the upper cover, surrounded by a swirling, floral gilt pattern. A simple, elegant floral border on the lower cover surrounds a central roundel with a double gilt border, the author&#39;s name and the initials "LJ" calligraphed within. A fine copy in an unusual binding. Housed in a matching slipcase.

Quarto, with 25 plates in colour and black-and-white, map of "L'Ile Rose"; a very good copy, in the original printed wrappers. A very scarce book, published only in limited numbers: the first published version of Rose de Freycinet's voyage journal: the only great voyage account told from a woman's point of view.Rose de Freycinet was smuggled aboard the Uranie, disguised in men's clothing, before the ship left Toulon in 1817. She returned to France three years later as a heroine after a voyage which had taken her to South America, South Africa, Mauritius, West Australia, Timor, the Moluccas, New Guinea, the Carolines, Guam, Hawaii, and New South Wales. They had survived hardships ranging from an attack by Algerian pirates to their shipwreck in the Falklands, when the Uranie was wrecked in French Bay, forcing Freycinet to purchase the American ship Mercury for the return voyage to France.Rose de Freycinet's journal captures her impressions of the adventure and is especially notable for the twenty-five lovely colour plates after original drawings by Arago and Pellion, including several famous Australian scenes. Hill comments that Madame Freycinet's presence caused some disruption among the crew, but she was immensely popular in most of the voyage's ports of call, and is now recognised as one of the great romantic figures of exploration. Although cautious, Freycinet did not hesitate to name Rose Island in the Samoan island chain as well as "Cap Rose" in Shark Bay, after her.Borba de Moraes, I, p. 328 ("very interesting"); Chadenat, 1607; Hill, 652 (in error listing 28 plates).

Illustrated with seven black & white plates, which reproduce a painting by the Swiss artist Niklaus Stoecklin and six of its details. Stoecklin was influenced by Late Gothic art, as well as by his contemporaries, the Expressionists and Futurists. The text accompanying the images is a fantasy tale written by Ernst Grosse, the noted German ethnologist, inspired by elements of the painting. Privately printed by the press&#39;s proprietor, Hans Mardersteig, for his close friend, the art collector Georg Reinhart. Reinhart purchased the painting from Stoecklin and, in turn, helped launch the artist&#39;s career. In a binding of full vellum with gilt title and rules. Fine in slipcase. T.e.g.

      Boni & Liveright, New York 1927 - First edition. Introduction by Donald Ogden Stewart. Fine in very near fine dustwrapper but for a small chip on the crown, but with the primarily white jacket bright and fresh. The exceptionally scarce jacket is of interest in its own right as it contains blurbs from Robert Benchley, Edna Ferber, Sidney Howard, Marc Connelly, George Gershwin and several other notables. A fantasy for the stage based on a passage in *Mr. and Mrs. Haddock Abroad*, a humorous book by Barry's friend Donald Ogden Stewart, the expatriate novelist and screenwriter. Barry and Stewart were longtime friends and collaborators. Stewart won an Oscar for his screenplay based on Barry's *Philadelphia Story*, as well as starred in another Barry play, *Holiday*, where he played a character based on himself. Third edition thus, one of 1,600 copies, 4to, lv, (i), 538 pp. Frontispiece and one other photogravure plate plus 20 further plates (5 folding) and numerous chapter headings and other illustrations in the text, light, mostly marginal, foxing at the beginning and end. Original gilt decorated black cloth, t.e.g., spine ends and corners slightly worn, upper cover with some faint marks, otherwise a bright copy. Originally published 1893-4, this was Beardsley's first major work at the age of 22, intended by the publishers to rival the productions of William Morris' Kelmscott Press. Much of the work shows the influence of Burne-Jones and the Pre-Raphaelites but also takes in elements of Japanese prints and his regard for Whistler. "...if [Beardsley] had never illustrated another book... Le Morte d'Arthur could stand as a monument of decorative book illustration... Some of these designs (he never called his drawings illustrations) stand as models of economy, none is impoverished" (Lewis, The 20th Century Book, pp148-9).

      Arthème Fayard 1927 Gouache aquarellée signée Gino Starace pour la couverture de L'Ensorceleuse de Yves Mora, n°195 du Livre Populaire, Arthème Fayard, mai 1927. Exécutée sur un carton Canson lavis A à grain satiné de format 17 x 25 cm (marges comprises ; le dessin fait 15 x 24), signées par l'artiste. La cartouche du titre fait partie du dessin original ; un macaron avec le prix de vente est collé. Un papier calque monté sur le haut du canson vient protéger le dessin. Magnifique composition, typique de l'art populaire de Starace, utilisant le motif suggestif et mélodramatique de l'enlèvement. Magnifique état. Giocchino Starace (1859 ? 1950), dit Gino Starace, fut le célèbre illustrateur de la collection du « Livre Populaire » des éditions Arthème Fayard, il en fit un nombre impressionnant de couvertures, choisissant très souvent une scène majeure, violente, étrange, émouvante, du roman, ou bien un portrait saisi dans un sentiment de colère, d'effarement, de terreur. Starace, dit-on, lisait souvent les textes pour choisir la scène qu'il allait composer. Natif de Naples, ce dessinateur italien a dominé presque un demi-siècle de littérature populaire française, grâce à une technique classique irréprochable au service des débordements du genre. Dans Lisibilité, emphase, narrativité (in Tapis Franc n°1, 1988), Daniel Couégnas montre que Starace perçut « la nécessité vitale qui commandait que l'illustration de couverture, cette affiche publicitaire en réduction fût saisie instantanément, appréhendée, déchiffrée de manière univoque par le regard afin de provoquer désir ou curiosité, conditions nécessaires d'une lecture ultérieure du roman ». Il précise que « la force de Starace, c'est sa capacité de synthétiser en une scène les stéréotypes qui renvoient immédiatement le lecteur moyen, médiocrement instruit, à un déjà-lu, ou un déjà-vu, tant historique que dramatique ou psychologique. » Son classicisme marié aux excès mélodramatiques, le choix de couleurs vives, la dynamique du mouvement et l'emphase constituent sa griffe qui culmine avec la folie surréaliste de la série à 65 centimes des Fantômas de Pierre Souvestre et Marcel Allain. This is a large fabulous fairy watercolor, ink and tempera by Henderson that appears as the double-page wrap-around front and back covers of Twinkie Town Tales Book No. 2 by Carlyle Emery, published in St. Louis by Hamilton Brown Co. 1927. The image measures 26" wide x 18" matted and framed to 36 x 27" and is in fine condition. Depicted is a grand feast of the cherubic elves called Twinkies - 19 of them are sitting at a table feasting on cake and a huge cherry. The entire surface of the paper is covered with vibrant colors and the image is absolutely irresistable. The title lettering is in the upper right corner reading "Twinkie Town Tales BOOK 2". The image appears greatly reduced in the book.

Bound without the original wrappers and without the half-title to No. 3, pages tanned as usual. Joints rubbed, outer corner of No. 3 title-page missing with loss to the year, professionally repaired. A beautifully bound, handsome copy of two early issues of this important literary review produced in Paris in the twenties. Sylvia Beach in her book "Shakespeare and Company, talks of 'transition': "All the best Anglo-Saxon and European work of the period appeared in it, much of it for the first time.
