        Een Vruchtenmandje. [A Fruit Basket]

      Amsterdam: De Spieghel, 1927. Folio, [48] pages, 21 handcolored plates, All the plates are on a sturdy, thick card stock and measured 11.5 x 8 inches (29x21 cm). First edition, signed and limited. Roman numeral III of a limitation of seven copies in portfolio form, signed by Bodenheim. With an additional inscription dated 1941, signed by Bodenheim and Ansingh. There was also an edition of 100 copies, in book form, bound in a Japanese style and printed on Japon Van Gelder. Drawings by Nelly Bodenheim with rhymes by Lizzy Ansingh. Fruits, nuts and vegetables are represented, including lemons, grapes, pears, radishes, red pepper, almonds, blackberries, apricots, cherries and leeks. The vignette on the folio and many of the plates look as if they were not printed at all but rather were entirely done by hand. The illustrations are rich in color and originality, with a naive style and an accessible, wry humor. Bodenheim was a popular book illustrator in the Netherlands in the early twentieth century and she and Ansingh teamed up on numerous projects. Plates well preserved and clean. The folio ledger has light soiling on its boards and wear along its joints and flaps' cloth edges. Very good. Rare.         THE WOMEN AT POINT SUR

      New York: Boni & Liveright, 1927. First Edition. Cloth-backed boards. Light chipping to tips of spine of dustwrapper which is slightly darkened. About Fine in Very Good or better dustwrapper. This long narrative poem is one of Jeffers's best works. This copy is SIGNED by the poet on the front free endpaper on 1 December 1927 at Tor House, Carmel, and contains the following MANUSCRIPT lines from the poem in the poet's hand: "'He is darker to himself than to me,/He is neither a child nor a man, he has no understanding./He is terrible,' he said with tranquil eyes./He intended the multiform God but it was Barclay on the hilltop---." Books signed by the poet with manuscript verse are decidedly scarce.

        The Unpublished Letters of Charles Dickens to Mark Lemon

      London - Halton and Truscott Smith, Ltd., 1927 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A limited edition copy of this volume, containing the letters of Charles Dickens to Mark Lemon, playwright and founder of Punch magazine, from 1847 to 1870. Mark Lemon's friendship with Charles Dickens was a close and long-lasting one. Although he contributed to Bentley's Miscellany while Dickens was editor, it is unlikely that the two men met until after the first issue of Punch appeared. In April 1843 Lemon was formally invited to dinner by Dickens and their friendship grew. Lemon and Punch stalwart Gilbert Beckett adapted Dickens's Chimes for the Adelphi in February 1844. The Haunted Man followed in 1848. A shared passion for amateur theatricals cemented their friendship. Lemon appeared as Brainworm and Dickens as Bobadil in Jonson's Every Man in his Humour, which played at the Royalty and at the St James Theatre in the autumn of 1845. The production was transferred to Manchester and Liverpool in the summer of 1847, and in the following year the play was revived in London, alternating with The Merry Wives of Windsor, in which Lemon appeared as Falstaff alongside Dickens. During the more lengthy provincial tour that followed Lemon and Dickens supplemented their Shakespearian repertoire with roles in various farces. In a campaign to raise funds for the Guild of Literature and Art, Lemon and Dickens appeared again in Jonson's play at Lytton's Knebworth in November 1850, and in the following May, after a performance in Lytton's Not So Bad As We Seem, Lemon joined Dickens in Mr Nightingale's Diary, a piece that they had co-written. Further provincial tours followed late in 1851 and in 1852. Lemon also took part in productions at Dickens's small private theatre in Tavistock House, notably in Wilkie Collins's melodramas The Lighthouse and The Frozen Deep. Lemon and his family had become frequent visitors to Dickens's home since the latter had moved to Tavistock House in November 1851, though the new neighbours were already fellow members of a weekly walking club, had taken nocturnal strolls around London together, and had been on excursions, such as a tour of Salisbury Plain in 1848. In the following year Dickens submitted his one and only contribution to Punch (an attack on the suburban water supply), but Lemon deemed it unsuitable. The end of Lemon's long friendship with Dickens came in 1858 when Lemon neglected to publish in Punch his friend's proclamation outlining the reasons for a separation from his wife, Catherine, who had been advised by Lemon. The two men were eventually reconciled in 1867. Including four folded facsimiles of the letters. This edition was printed ina limited quantity of five hundred and twenty-five, so this is a very rare edition. Condition: In a cloth binding with marbled boards. Externally, very smart, with just some minor shelfwear only. Internally, tightly bound. The pages are very bright and clean, with virtually no spotting at all. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

      New York: Longmans, Green & Co., 1927. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine, lacking the scarce dustwrapper. Cloth. Illustrated with photographs. INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the front endpaper by Stagg: "To Norris L. Tibbetts,/With the affectionate/regards of/Amos Alonzo Stagg/November 27, 1927." A scarce early inscription before his writing became shaky by one of the most important figures in American sports. Stagg, the first to be elected to the Football Hall of Fame as both player and coach, was active in the sport until the age of 98. He is credited with originating more plays and formations than any other man and, among other developments, is responsible for the forward pass, the huddle, and numbered uniforms. Stagg also invented the indoor batting cage and pioneered the headlong slide in baseball. In addition Stagg participated in the first public basketball game on 11 March 1892, scoring his team's only basket, and the first intercollegiate basketball game on 18 January 1896. He is said to be responsible for the concept of five-man basketball. Of the Grand Old Man of the Game, Knute Rockne once said, "All football comes from Stagg." Tibbets was pastor of Hyde Park Union Church in Chicago.

        Photo Album of a Big Game Hunting Expedition in Sudan

      Sudan, 1927-1928, 1928. Original photographs of four Englishmen on a big game safari in Sudan with many views of indigenous life. Contains 143 original mounted black and white photographs, plus 1 additional wide angle sepia view loosely inserted at front. each captioned in a most elegant hand, and mounted double sided onto 23 heavy cardstock leaves. Photographs vary slightly in size, the smallest being approximately 10,5 x 6cm and the largest 13,5 x 8cm. The single loose photograph measures approximately 26 x 14cm. Lovely binding by Kodak S.A. of Egypt, half calf over green morocco, five raised bands to spine, original marbled endpapers, solid spine with three silver button-styled posts. Album measures approximately 46 x 30 x 6 cm, Very slight rubbing to boards, upper joint very neatly repaired, otherwise in very good condition. An unidentified young English chap, roughly in his twenty's and known only as 'self' puts forth a commendable visual record of a grand hunting adventure in the 1920s, which was enthusiastically partaken along with four others, 'Tony' who is his age, 'Cyril' who bears likeness to the British classical scholar and author Cyril Bailey 1871-1957, 'Lillie' and 'Brock' whom are a generation their elder. Curious and enthusiastically consumed, he absorbs the cultural experience through much interaction with the Sudanese people, whom we see in many images. It appears that he had the distinct opportunity to accompany Captain Henry Brocklehurst on this expedition, whom he nicknames 'Brock.' An important figure in Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, Brocklehurst was a pilot for the Royal Flying Corps, for ten years named Game Warden of the Sudan, author of "Game animals of the Sudan...," published in 1931, and the first to shoot a giant panda. The album begins with of the travellers arriving by rail from Khartoum at Wadi Halfa, a city in northern Sudan on the shores of Lake Nubia, and features a lovely view of the Abu Simbel rock temples of the 13th century BCE. Next in the town of Bor, on the east bank of the White Nile in Jonglei State, central South Sudan, he captures large groups of Sudanese settling a dispute in an outdoor court of sorts, as well as some men identified as 'The First Council of War'. The game hunting expedition finally begins, with a sizeable lot of warrior-looking men, scarcely clothed but ready to endure the most laborious tasks of such an undertaking - for a handsome fee we can presume. Forging muddy rivers and weed-filled swamps, crossing vast plains, and setting up elaborate camps, the expedition was well funded. Even the youngest hunters, had a servant assigned to them alone, the photographer's helping hand being a Dinka man named Doot. The album's creator is seen in a sedan chair carried by "my boys at Lokil" being carried to the town of Torit, which lies at the foot of the Imatong Mountain Range. The album abounds with images of various African tribes, Dinka and Shilluk people mostly. Also plentiful are the prized trophies which include buffalo, gazelle, rhinoceros, warthog and lion. There are also a few images of roaming elephants. While adventure seems to be frequently dispersed with vehicles stuck in flooded bogs and the like, images reveal that the many hired hands saved the English adventurists from unnecessary hardship. Further assisted by an able group of indigenous Sudanese, they summited a peak in the Imatong Mountains, in the southeast of South Sudan in the state of Eastern Equatoria, in the area which had been first visited by a European with the explorations of Samuel Baker was the first European only 65 years prior in 1863, followed by Emin Pasha in 1881. (Even in 1922 the official map of the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan showed only the outlines of the mountains. It would not be until May 1929, after this expedition, that the name of the Imatong Mountains would be published on a map, finally prepared from a compilation of the Sudan Government Survey Department, and published in the Geographical Journal. The first detailed map appeared in 1931.) On a sojourn to Regaf [Rejaf], which was then was the terminus for boats on the Nile, he seizes the opportunity to photograph the Chevrolet cars of the 'Cape Town to Stockholm Expedition', vividly labeled in all their glory as they too, in 1928, faced the rain flooded plains reputed for its ferocious lions. Aside from captivating an historic trans-African journey, these confirm the album's date. Concluding the album are a few photographs from the Belgian Congo, including an isolated fuel station and a war dance, views of Lake Victoria, Ripon Falls, Owen Falls and Mombasa, then embarking on a P & O steamer at Aden which sees him to Suez, and finally a land journey to Cairo before returning home. .

One of 50 copies specially bound, and containing a two-page frontispiece featuring a color reproduction of a trade card for a Philadelphia dealer in whale products, illustrated with a dramatic whaling scene. With numerous reproductions of trade cards in black and white, ranging from c. 1730 to 1877. Includes cards for Paul Revere and Son's Bell and Cannon Foundry, engraved by Revere himself. One card for a New York bookseller features an illustration of a voracious reader buried in books designed and etched by George Cruikshank, which is described as "a genial, Dickensian achievement." Jenny notes that taken as a whole, trade cards "become a discourse on the history of industry and mechanics, art and architecture, of modes of living, of styles of dress, of manners and mannerisms-- in short, on the trend of civilization." Corners and spine slightly rubbed, and spine shows some light soiling, else about fine in vellum-backed paper-covered boards printed with a yellow and green floral design. Gilt-titled on the spine.

This is a large fabulous fairy watercolor, ink and tempera by Henderson that appears as the double-page wrap-around front and back covers of Twinkie Town Tales Book No. 2 by Carlyle Emery, published in St. Louis by Hamilton Brown Co. 1927. The image measures 26" wide x 18" matted and framed to 36 x 27" and is in fine condition. Depicted is a grand feast of the cherubic elves called Twinkies - 19 of them are sitting at a table feasting on cake and a huge cherry. The entire surface of the paper is covered with vibrant colors and the image is absolutely irresistable. The title lettering is in the upper right corner reading "Twinkie Town Tales BOOK 2". The image appears greatly reduced in the book.

This third book in the quartet written by Milne, inspired by his young son Christopher, and illustrated by Shepard was an instant success. Like WHEN WE WERE YOUNG, NOW WE ARE SIX is a joyful combination of verse and pictures designed to captivate young readers. Christopher Milne wrote of his father’s stories: “It is difficult to be sure which came first. Did I do something and did my father then write a story about it? Or was it the other way about, and did the story come first? Certainly my father was on the look-out for ideas; but so too was I. FIRST EDITION OF A CLASSIC. This third book in the quartet written by Milne, inspired by his young son Christopher, and illustrated by Shepard was an instant success. Like WHEN WE WERE YOUNG, NOW WE ARE SIX is a joyful combination of verse and pictures designed to captivate young readers. Christopher Milne wrote of his father&#146;s stories: &#147;It is difficult to be sure which came first. Did I do something and did my father then write a story about it? Or was it the other way about, and did the story come first? Certainly my father was on the lookout for ideas; but so too was I. He wanted ideas for his stories, I wanted them for my games, and each looked towards the other for inspiration. But in the end it was all the same: the stories became part of our lives; we lived them, thought them, spoke them.&#148;-Enchanted Places.       Sacramento: Hapeman-Gee Printing Co.. 1927. Printed in blue ink on cardstock. Approximately 14" x 11.25". Tiny tears or small creases, else a near fine copy. The information "A Play with a Message" has been added over an original line (that seems like it might have been misspelled). An influential play by Karel Capek, which premiered in Prague in 1921, most famous now for introducing the word "robot" (derived from the Czech noun "robota" meaning "labor"). The play, in which androids who are at first content to work for their human creators decide to rebel, made its U.S. premiere in 1922 and supposedly Spencer Tracy made his stage debut as one of the robots in an early American production. .

        AUTOGRAPHED LETTER SIGNED (ALS) to his son James with revealing biographical and financial information

      Hyde Park, [May 1927]. Letter. Normal creases. About Fine with envelope postmarked 15 May 1927. A 5-1/2-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER on 3 sheets of Roosevelt's Fidelity & Deposit Company of Maryland stationery, completely in FDR's hand, to his son James Roosevelt SIGNED as "Father." Roosevelt begins discussing Jimmy's return to rowing and his attempt to watch his son in action. He then mentions in a very revealing manner his half-brother, James, 26 years FDR's senior: "Of course Uncle Rosy's death was a very great shock to me- He was so much older than I am, that it would have been perfectly possible for us to be a good deal apart, yet I think that he & I were much more like real brothers than in many cases & we always pulled together with a fine understanding." Roosevelt gives details about James's estate and inheritances including his own: "I receive outright 100,000, which is part of what my Father left to Uncle Rosy- and I get the guns rifles & fishing tackle." He mentions how the death has disrupted his plans to be at Warm Springs and talks about a planned family trip to Europe. He tells Jimmy not to worry about school: "The chief advantage of the law is that it is the finest preparation for any non-scientific career but you could always take one of the short night courses at any time." Attending but not graduating from Harvard, James became an insurance executive, a position he left in 1937 to become secretary to his father in the White House. Letters completely in FDR's hand are scarce, especially to a family member, and virtually unique when this length. With the envelope addressed by FDR to Mr. James Roosevelt.

Third and most complete edition, limited to 1600 copies, with 10 extra illustrations not included in the two first printings. 22 full page and double-page illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley including the fine frontispiece, the Merlin drawing and the design for the original cover, also with numerous designs and illustrations throughout the text, as well as a profusion of decorated initials and chapter headings. Thick, large 4to, publisher&#146;s original black cloth with spine and covers beautifully and fully decorated in gilt after designs by Beardsley. lv, 538 pp. A very handsome, fine and proper copy, a bit of very minor spotting to the first few and last few leaves, a touch of offsetting to the flies, the cloth is rich, fresh and quite bright, hinges with some expert, very skillful and virtually unnoticeable re-freshening. AN IMPORTANT PRINTING OF THIS VERY BEAUTIFUL BOOK. The third edition contains an extra 10 illustrations added in the text, the first edition to do so, as well as the original binding design (which was never used) and a full size facsimile of the Merlin drawing, previously used on a smaller scale. The text is that of Caxton&#146;s printed for the first time in 1485 at Westminster in London. This book represents Aubrey Beardsley&#39;s first commissioned work, undertaken when he was not yet twenty. While working at an insurance office in London, Beardsley frequently visited the Jones and Evans bookshop in Cheapside, where he got to know Frederick Evans. Mr. Evans allowed the artist to trade drawings for books on occasion, and it was Evans who suggested to J. M. Dent that Beardsley should be the artist for Mr. Dent&#39;s new edition of the Arthurian tales. A suggestion well made and one to which 20th century printing owes much. The commission, which came in 1892 was to &#147;design and illustrate an ambitious edition of Malory&#146;s &#145;Le Morte d&#146;Arthur&#146; which was intended to rival the Kelmscott Press books on their own ground...(E)lements beside the pale remnants of Pre-Raphaelitism were at work fertilizing (Beardsley&#146;s) developing talent, and what was seen by its devisers as an emulation of Morris and Burne-Jones turned out in the execution more like a parody of them--a parody which annoyed Morris to the point at which he contemplated legal action. It may well not have been a deliberate parody: it is simply that already, willy-nilly, the &#145;strong medieval decorative feeling&#146; of Morris was mixed, as Walter Crane noted, &#145;with a curious weird Japanese-like spirit of diablerie and grotesque, as of an opium dream&#146;.&#148; Beardsley&#146;s life was short, he died of tuberculosis at the age of 26. In those few years he managed however to leave a great and lasting artistic legacy and a fascinating personal history as well.

Lindbergh's own account of his Transatlantic flight, this being copy #772 of 1000 copies SIGNED by both the author and the publisher. Laid in is the one-sheet "Publishers Note" and an eight-page pamphlet containing tributes by Oliver Herford, Grantland Rice, and others.

        Dear Bee. Loving Letters to a Daughter 1927-1935

      Marshfield Hills, MA. 2012. Artist&#39;s book, one of six copies, all on a range of papers, each copy signed and numbered by the artist, Viola Kaeumlen. Page size: box of 13 pouches (tied with brown silk ribbon) as envelopes holding the "letters" and related material written by the artist, printed list of contents, box size closed is 5.5 x 7.5 x 2.25 inches. Bound by the artist: two-part box is brown book cloth over boards and adorned with medallion of young woman; box fastened tan silk cord woven through eight holes in the 2 parts of the box, lined with Canson BFK Rives Tan paper. The artist&#39;s statement and the colophon explain that the book contains texts of letters written by Mrs. Mary Arthur to her daughter Beatrice Arthur over the period from 1927 - 1935 that were found in an old suitcase by Ms. Kaeumlen in 2010 in flea market on the Boston South Shore. The letters led to an investigation of not only the women concerned but the times in which they lived, with the pertinent information on the times: the Sacco-Vanzetti case, the Lindbergh kidnapping, the Great Depression, local industry (in which Bee&#39;s father worked) The Cordage Company, their church in Plymouth where they lived (the first church established by the Mayflower colonists), social welfare programs of the times. Unusual for the times, Beatrice Arthur left her parent&#39;s home in Plymouth, MA to attend Salem State College in what was then far-off Salem. Her mother&#39;s letters of this eight year period are the very stuff of social history as well as the poignant details of one family&#39;s struggle to survive in very hard times. Four of the 13 pouches hold general information about how the letters were found, the history of the family (Mr. Arthur was an immigrant from Scotland), and a conclusion. The other nine pouches are related to one of the years Mary wrote to her daughter. Ms. Kaeumlen was able to locate the family home in Plymouth and learned that Bee had passed away in 2009 at the age of 99, a devoted educator for all of her life. & The artist has located family photographs, postcards from the era, paper clippings and greeting cards, all of which were scanned in printed on an archival inkjet printer on a range of papers including Epson Matte, Red River Polar Pearl Metallic, Silver Metallic, Canson Newsprint, Strathmore translucent Vellum and Sennelier Calligraphy paper. The fonts used are Helvetica for Ms. Kaeumlen&#39;s own writing and general information texts and Lucida Handwriting for the excerpts of Mary Arthur&#39;s letters. & This is a beautiful object, redolent of another time when hand-written mail meant significant time lapses in communication and correspondents had expressive and unique hand-writing as well as vocabulary. More than that, the author / artist, Viola Kaeumlen, has taken this remarkably personal correspondence and placed it firmly in a time and place in American social history. with information about health epidemics, social issues - the Arthur&#39;s must deal with payment in "scrip" instead of real money, criminal cases of local and national interest, as well as the role of the local church and welfare societies in everyday life. It is as beautiful and meaningful way of learning social history as one could find. Beatrice Arthur, the "Dear Bee" of the letters, is perhaps the prototype of the 20th century woman who earned a bachelor&#39;s degree in Business Education and completed post-graduate work at Harvard, Boston University and Bridgewater State College and worked summers in the Plymouth Cooperative Bank, the Plymouth Cordage Company office, and as a civil service secretary in the U.S. government as well as marrying and raising her step-children. <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/10608.jpg >Image.</A><br>

First Edition, First Impression. With the author&#39;s contemporary presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, "To T. Sturge Moore: from his devoted friend, the author." Lewis had met Sturge Moore whilst studying at the Slade. Together with Augustus John Moore greatly influenced Lewis literary development and was instrumental in introducing him to London&#39;s Bohemian circle in the first decade of the century. This book represents Lewis&#39;s major essay on Shakespeare.

      Original manuscript. Very Good. One-half page on quarto letterhead, with five emendations in Eliot&#39;s hand, signed as T.S. Eliot. In part: "...Your Grace&#39;s kind letter...has been forwarded by my secretary, as I have been at this Institute since the beginning of October....I feel greatly honored by your Grace&#39;s attention and am most happy to have received this letter....Your Grace&#39;s humble ("obedient" written in) servant, T.S. Eliot. Eliot had converted from Unitarian to Anglican in 1927, but identified himself as "Anglo-Catholic." He was appointed to the Institute for Advanced Study after winning the Nobel Prize in 1948.
