Wistaria. Written by Witter Bynner for Rosalie and Sigmund Stern, Atherton California

San Francisco:: John Henry Nash,, 1927. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Ansel Easton Adams (1902-1984). Folio Bifold. 14 x 9 1/2 inches. [4] pp. Front cover printed in black, Bynner's poem, Wistaria, printed in black on page [3], lovely initial "W" printed in black and brown, brown rules, mounted black-and-white photograph of wisteria vine on the portico of the Stern's home tipped-in at page [3]; text clean, unmarked. Printed on fine handmade paper, folded once; toned, especially at the edges of the covers. SCARCE. Very Good. This bifold contains a Parmelian Print by Ansel Easton Adams (1902-1984), and is printed by John Henry Nash (1871-1947). There is no bibliography of John Henry Nash's prodigious output of ephemeral material. Therefore providing a full bibliographical record of this item is tricky. The Clark Library has a copy from the Carey McWilliams collection and has it dated [1923]. However, Jonathan Spaulding, in his biography of Adams, Ansel Adams and the American Landscape, indicates that Adams first came into contact with Rosalie (b. 1869) and Sigmund Stern in 1926, through an introduction by Albert Bender, who first called Adams' photographs "Parmelian Prints" for the portfolio Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras. The University of Arizona, Center for Creative Photography, has a gelatin silver print of "Mrs. Sigmund Stern, Atherton, California" with the same view of the house and a nearly identical image to that in this bifold, with the exception that Mrs. Stern is standing in the frame of the University of Arizona image, but Mrs. Stern is absent from the image in this bifold. The University of Arizona, Center for Creative Photography, has confirmed that the Ansel Adams Papers archived at the University of Arizona shows that the image was captured sometime in the spring of 1927.         Aristide Maillol, Sculpteur et Lithographe. Maîtres et petits maîtres d'aujourd'hui.

Paris: Galerie des Peintres-Graveurs, 1927 - Text by Marc Lafargue in five languages, and FOUR ORIGINAL SIGNED AND NUMBERED LITHOGRAPHS BY MAILLOL, HERE PRESENT IN TWO STATES EACH (8 signed lithographs in all), in black and in sanguine, printed on fine Montval paper. From a total edition of 125 copies, this is COPY "B", ONE OF ONLY 25 LETTERED COPIES WITH THE LITHOGRAPHS IN BOTH STATES. Guérin 267, 271, 272, and 274. From the collection of Nelson Rockefeller, onetime U.S. vice-president and owner of a great collection of modern art (his book plate on inside front cover). Rockefeller sold this suite to Sylvan Cole (1918-2005), dean of American print dealers. The lithographs, of female nudes, are among the artist's largest and most important. Dealers have broken up virtually all copies of this suite, and the present copy is doubtless one of very few deluxe copies surviving intact. Large folio. Loose as issued in printed card portfolio. Portfolio cover in very good condition with some minor wear and creasing. Contents fine. The eight large folio lithographs are all in brilliant condition. An outstanding item. IMPORTANT NOTE: During March, 2006, hundreds of prints represented as being from "the Sylvan Cole collection" were sold at public auction. In fact, ALL of these items were from his leftover gallery inventory, not his private collection. As far as I know, the few items I offer from Sylvan's collection are the ONLY items anywhere on the market which are actually from his private collection (which he kept in his apartment, not his gallery). I acquired them all directly from Sylvan (my uncle), mainly in spring, 2005. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Lazarus Laughed

NY: Boni & Liveright, 1927. First edition, limited issue. This is copy #371 of 775 numbered copies, signed by O'Neill. Original patterned boards & white paper backstrip, printed paper label on spine. Lower spine partly chipped away, also chipped at the top of the spine, affecting the title label. Some splitting to inner front hinge, shelf wear to tips; otherwise a very good copy in general. The inner front cover bears the bookplate of Amelia Earhart; there are no other ownership marks. This book is mentioned in Susan Butler's biography of Amelia Earhart: "East to the Dawn" (2012), on page 358: "Amelia had sent out from Rye the most precious of her books, some dating from her school years; an Ivanhoe she had doodled in, books of verse, a three-volume edition of Kipling, the sonnets of Edna St. Vincent Millay, and a signed first edition of Lazarus Laughed by Eugene O'Neill." This bookplate is identical to others of hers which we have seen, and although we have no record of provenance, we believe this to be her copy of Lazarus Laughed. This book was purchased privately by the present owner from a gentleman in Honolulu, some years ago.

- Lit u.a.: Günther Wirth: Verbotene Kunst 1933-1945. Verfolgte Künstler im deutschen Südwesten (1987), S. 309. - Künstlerschicksale im Dritten Reich in Württemberg (1987), S. 84. - Sehr gut erhalten.

        Jardins de la Côte d'Azur.

Paris, Massin & Cie Editeurs, 1927. COMPLET. OUVRAGE RARE ET RECHERCHE. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
