        The Stabilization of the Mark

George Allen & Unwin, Ltd, London 1927 - 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 247 pages; 1st edition. Scarce and important work on the economic realities of hyperinflation in Weimar Germany and the largely successful means used to stabilize the currency. Original dark blue cloth with titling brightly stamped in gilt to spine. Double rules in blind to cover board. Binding snug; contents clean and unmarked. Cloth at spine ends appears a bit brittle with just superficial rub and nicks. Hint of foxing to endpage. Overall a very nice example of this uncommon volume.         Autograph musical working manuscript of the Epilogue for Violoncello, Piano and Tape. Titled by the composer "Epilog "Peer Gynt' " at head of first page. Unsigned and undated, but Hamburg, February 1993

4 pp. (471 measures). Large folio (425 x 230 mm.). Unbound. Notated in both pencil and ink on 32-stave "Star Nr. 37" music manuscript paper in the composer's small, dense hand. An active composing manuscript of the majority of the work, presenting material for the cello at rehearsal number 4 to several measures after rehearsal number 54. With numerous deletions, changes and corrections. Slightly worn. In very good condition overall. . Epilogue, one of Schnittke's most expressive chamber works, was written for the famed Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich (1927-2007), who gave the work its first performance with Schnittke's wife Irina at Evian on Lake Geneva on May 20, 1993. The work is an arrangement of the final part of Schnittke's ballet Peer Gynt (1986). Schnittke is often considered to be the successor to Shostakovich as Russia's premiere composer. His early music showed the strong influence of Dmitri Shostakovich, but he went on to adopt a very polystylistic approach to composition. As his health worsened, however, he adopted a somewhat bleaker but more accessible style; some Schnittke scholars have argued, in fact, that it is the composer's late works that will ultimately be considered as the most influential of his entire output.

LEAVES FROM MY LIFE - Reminiscences by the famous Manipulative Surgeon

Hutchinson & Co. (Publishers) LTD., Pasternoster Row, London, EC 1927 - The original dust jacket houses this book. It states to the front cover: In a long review "The Medical Press" said: "To break down the barriers of legally - entrenched orthodoxy and attain to wealth and titular distiction while still young enough to enjoy his success, is in any field a remarkable performance; in the field of medicine it is almost miraculous. Disraeli's conquest of the proudest aristocracy in Europe almost pales in comparison. . . Sir Herbert Barker has accomplished a social tour de force, and his very restrained account of it all is a valuable contribution to a certain side of the history of his time." There is a 2 inch chip to the rear top of the dustjacket. Few small chips to the extremities in general. Repaired to rearside. Now housed in a removable archival sleeve. Red cloth boards, with faded colour in general. Firmly bound to inner page block. There are sixteen full page illustrations and these are all present. Light browning to pages, otherwise all pages are clean and tightly bound. - Thanks for your interest and I hope you like the book enough to buy it. - Regards from Arabella.         The Erechtheum Measured, Drawn, and Restored By Gorham Phillips Stevens (Text and Plates)

First Edition by Harvard University Press for The American School of Classical Studies, Cambridge, Mass.: 1927. Both volumes of this two volume set are in very good+ condition in dark blue cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spine and on the front board together with a gilt seal for The American School of Classical Studies at Athens. The Plates volume is a large folio measuring 21" by 15" with ribbon ties. There are two small 1/4" areas at the head and heel of the spine where the cloth is worn through and the same is true at the lower tips of the boards and there is an assortment of small, faint stains to the covers. The first free end page is wrinkled and shows three1/3" repaired closed tears at its lower edge. The text volume is a quarto measuring 12" by 9" with the spine slanted and with foxing to the front end sheets and a 1" square tape repair to the lower fore corner of the free end page. There is a small rent to the cloth on the front board above the second "H" in the word "Erechtheum". Faint spots of foxing are also present around all edges of the text block. Both volumes are signed in pencil by the author at the bottom edge of the title page. The Plates volume is unpaginated, but contains all 54 plates as called for in the nine page "Description of Plates". The plates in this volume are not loose as they have been in other copies seen. Instead, they are all bound-into what was the original chemise and modified to a case binding. The Text volume contains 673 pages including an extensive general index, indices for Greek and Latin Authors and Inscriptions, Greek Words, and Proper Names in the Inscriptions. This volume is illustrated with 236 line drawings and black and white photographs. Interestingly, the printed page 21/22 is missing replaced by the previous owner, and author, by two, typewritten pages with the complete text for the missing pages as well as two black and white photographs to replace the images missing in the printed version. World Cat and OCLC show only 41 copies of this set in libraries world wide.
