Ristisõitjad : Novellid (The Crusaders : Novels)

Loodus (Nature), Tartu 1927 - Estonian language. Octavo 14 x 21 cm. Weight 450 gr. Wrappers, 383 [1] pp. The book is in Near Fine condition, without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Restored bottom end of the spine and bottom right corner of the front cover (minor triangle piece was broken off), some soiling on back cover and on few last pages. Novels collection "Ristisõitjad" (The Crusaders) includes eight novels written during the period 1923-1927 and considered as a major part of Gailit’s novels creation. In these works clearly perceptible 1920s dissapointing moods and frustration in the society. Author’s grotesque style softened to be graceful. Dynamics and expressionism keeps readers tension high throughout. Crarming description of nature show how close writer feels connected with homeland. In the novels myths and realities are tied together. All the heroes – priest in “Crusaders”, villager in “Taevaskoja inhabitant”, refugee in “Chasm”, sailor in “Northern Virgin” etc, are seekers of better life to escape ugly and depressing world. As a talented master of words with an extraordinary style, choice of subject and type, Gailit focused on the eternal opposition of beauty and ugliness, positive and negative. The literary work of August Gailit (1891-1960) has fascinated readers of different generations throughout the twentieth century. His style charms the reader, leaving no one untouched, and is immediately recognisable. It displays a burgeoning imagination, dash and verve, tenderness and love, and also enjoyable skill with words. In the 1917-1919 Gailit was expressionist member of the literary group Siuru. Until the middle of the 1920s he was strongly influenced by neo-romanticism, later turned to realism. Book’s remarkable avant-garde constructivist cover design created by Jaan Vahtra (1882-1947). He one of the most bright talents of Estonian modern art, a founding member of the Estonian Art Group of Cubism and Constructivism. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        The House On the Cliff

New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1927 The Hardy Boys are fictional teenage brothers and amateur detectives. They live in the city of Bayport on Barmet Bay[10] with their father, detective Fenton Hardy, their mother, Laura Hardy,[a] and their Aunt Gertrude. Frank, the older brother, is eighteen (sixteen in earlier versions), and his younger brother Joe is seventeen (fifteen in earlier versions). The brothers nominally attend high school in Bayport, where they are in the same grade, but school is rarely mentioned in the books and never hinders the Hardys in solving mysteries. In the older stories, the Hardy Boys' cases are often linked to the confidential cases their detective father is working on. He sometimes asks them for help, while at other times they stumble upon villains and incidents that are connected to his cases. In the Undercover Brothers series, begun in 2005, the Hardys are members of an organization known as American Teens Against Crime, which assigns them to cases. The Hardy Boys are sometimes assisted in solving mysteries by their friends Chet Morton, Phil Cohen, Biff Hooper, Jerry Gilroy, and Tony Prito, and, less frequently, by their platonic girlfriends Callie Shaw and Iola Morton (Chet's sister). The Hardy Boys are constantly involved in adventure and action. Despite the frequent danger, the boys "never lose their nerve ... They are hardy boys, luckier and more clever than anyone around them." They live in an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue: "Never were so many assorted felonies committed in a simple American small town. Murder, drug peddling, racehorse kidnapping, diamond smuggling, medical malpractice, big-time auto theft, even (in the 1940s) the hijacking of strategic materials and espionage, all were conducted with Bayport as a nucleus."[13] With so much in common, the boys are so little differentiated that one commentator facetiously describes them thus: "The boys' characters basically broke down this way - Frank had dark hair; Joe was blond." In general, however, "Frank was the thinker while Joe was more impulsive, and perhaps a little more athletic."The two boys are infallibly on good terms with each other and never engage in sibling rivalry, with the exception of the New Hardy Boys Casefiles series

        Cleared for Strange Ports

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1927 - INSCRIBED "Inscribed for / Mr R. L. Patterson / with all good wishes / Edith K. Roosevelt / Sagamore Hill / October 7th 1935" and SIGNED "Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt" of a tipped in black and white photo of a toothy, smiling former First Lady. 5.75" x 8.5" with a Frontispiece of a three masted schooner which also served as the title page illustration and includes 19 black and white photo illustrations. Less of a book and more of a collection of eight travelogues from T.R.'s immediate family; wife, son, and two sons-in-law. In this collection of articles, the widow of Theodore Roosevelt (Aug 6, 1861 - Sep 30, 1948), the Roosevelt children, and their spouses recall their experiences traveling around the world. Includes "Hunting Amid Korean Snows" by Kermit Roosevelt, "With Rifle and Camera on the Kenai" by Richard Derby (the husband of Ethel Roosevelt), and "The Odyssey of a Grandmother" by Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. In addition to the inscription and signed photo on the ffe is a 3-cent postage stamp depicting Sagamore Hill, the Roosevelt home in Oyster Bay, NY. This stamp was first issued in 1953, 18 years after the inscription. Additionally, a portrait of President Roosevelt is affixed to the front paste down. Slight offsetting and separation at bottom of the half-title and other preliminary leaves. Light bump to the top corner of the front board. The dust jacket has some edge wear uniformly along all edges, with some fading to the spine and rear panel. This is a very good book with two First Lady signatures and eight enchanting tales of travel. "I shall never forget the first time I saw a peacock in India. It was several years ago, in Mysore, during a tiger drive. I was sitting most insecurely in a banyan-tree, balancing on the top rung of a very high and shaky ladder, when suddenly, with a tremendous rustling, a peacock flew directly over my head its breast a starling emerald green, its great tail outspread, catching and holding the sunlight in its hundred golden eyes."         Barflies and Cocktails

Lecram Press 1927 - Lecram Press, 41, Rue des Trois-Bornes, Paris, Copyright by Harry McElhone 1927. Tod Sloan, a former American star jockey, acquired a bar in Paris in 1911 and renamed it the “New York Bar”. He then hired Harry McElhone, a barman from Dundee, Scotland to run it. In 1923, McElhone bought the bar and renamed it “Harry’s New York Bar”. The bar since became one of the most famous bars in the world and, today, is still owned by a member of the family. Harry’s over the years was a favorite drinking hole of the expatriate American and British communities. Frequent imbibers included Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sinclair Lewis, Coco Chanel, Jack Dempsey, Rita Hayworth, Humphrey Bogart, D.B. Wyndham Lewis and Brendan Behan. In the 1960 Ian Fleming short story “From a View to a Kill”, James Bond recalls visiting Harry’s bar during his first visit to Paris at age 16. The “Ivories” Piano Bar at Harry’s is where George Gershwin composed “An American in Paris”. Harry’s reputedly was the birthplace of classic cocktails such as the Bloody Mary, Side Car and Monkey Gland. This book includes a section entitled “The Birth of the IBF. In 1924, journalist O. O. McIntyre wrote an article for the Cosmopolitan wherein he referred to the “barflies” of this, our fair city (Paris). Harry McElhone’s prompt response was a follow up advertisement in which he called for an organization meeting of barflies in his own urban retreat. About Christmas, 1924, the International Bar Flies (IBF) was organized at Harry’s New York Bar. Big Blue Bottlefly, O.O. McIntyre, was installed as President and Little Blue Bottlefly, Harry McElhone, became Vice-President. The last word in this section is “Bzzzzzzzzzz” The illustration, see photo, on the back cover of the book shows two flies facing each other surrounded by lots of Buzz. The aim of IBF was the serious business of drinking. Members had their own secret handshake and they decorated their ties with a tie clip featuring two friendly well dressed flies. IBF exists still. D. B. Wyndham was a British journalist, author and biographer. He lived in Paris during the mid-1920’s while doing historical research for his biography of Francois Villon. He also wrote biographies of Moliere, Rabelais and Gilles de Rais. After returning to Britain, he co-wrote the screenplay for the first version of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Man Who Knew Too Much”. This fine association copy, has the following presentation script written over most of the title page (see photo) “To D B Wyndham Lewis with a mean Buzz fraternally yours I.B.F. Harry’s New York Bar Paris 13th Aug 1927” This smallish book is in very good condition, solid and square. Slight scuffing of the covers. Page sizes are 155 x 105mm and the book has 112 pages. There are photos and illustrations by Wynn throughout the volume and there are many vignettes illustrating the cocktail recipes. Wynn has signed the illustration on the back cover and is the likely illustrator for the front cover. On the last two blank pages in the book, an unknown person, has written the recipe for two versions of Rum Punch hot – a bonus. This wonderful book not only features one of the most famous and influential bars in the world but also is the source of the term “barfly” firmly entrenched in our lexicon. This volume would certainly be a cornerstone of any mixology collection. Bookseller inventory number 9912a. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

It sure was too bad and I thought something was going to be done about it, but I guess not. Williams was only there one day or so. Got to thinking about C.R.W's spurs and if you don't want to take responsibility of 'em send 'em to me. I'd sure like to hang 'em up here and Williams could take his time sending me the money ... I'm going to stay here a few months yet - maybe till Christmas, then I might go to Hollywood ... but I'm not going to run around anymore till then, I've got too much to do. Starting on a long novel now ..." James signed "Bill James" when addressing his wife or close friends (see Frazier p. 170). C.R Williams from Calais, Montana was a rodeo star and fine bronc rider. Woolf draws heavily on her childhood memories to tell the tale of the Ramsay family and friends on the Isle of Skye, in the years just preceding, during, and after the First World War. Published two years after Mrs. Dalloway and three before The Waves, To the Lighthouse is a "triumphant fusion of rapture and grief, tragedy and comedy, devotion and tyranny, and is widely acknowledged one of the greatest novels in the English literary canon" (Oxford Companion to English Literature). This first American edition was published on the same day as the English edition. Kirkpatrick A10b

Autograph Letter Signed ("Eric Gill" and "E.G."), to John Gideon Wilson of J. & E. Bumpus Bookshop in London

Villa des Palmiers, Salies-de-Béarn, France, 1927. 2 pp., in green ink. 4to. Some wrinkling, closed tear to blank margin, slight toning, old folds. 2 pp., in green ink. 4to. With architectural drawings and referencing Troilus & Criseyde. Gill writes to his friend, J.G. Wilson of the Bumpus Bookshop in London, regarding his engraving, "Flying Buttresses," mentioning his work on Troilus & Criseyde for the Golden Cockerel Press, and mentioning another of his publishers. An excellent technical letter with 5 small drawings in the text. In part: "I am working like anything on the engravings for the Golden Cockerel Troilus & Criseyde. I expect to finish the engravings by about Easter ... I shall come and see you as soon as possible to talk over things and explain how it happened that D. Cleverdon is publishing my next ... Meanwhile this is just to make a brief apology for myself in the matter of the Buttresses! Is matter of fact they aren't so blooming wrong in the engraving as your correspondent thinks. It's the perspective which makes the difficulty." The engraving in question is "Flying Buttresses," based on a drawing of St. Pierre, Chartes, used to illustrated Gil's 1926 essay "Id Quod Visum Placet." Gil uses the rest of the letter to explain, with the aid of five small sketches, why the perspective is in fact correct. Douglas Cleverdon, the Bristol bookseller and publisher, brought out Gill's Art and Love in 1927, as well as a collection of his engravings in 1929.
