        Winston Churchill

London: Mills & Boon, Limited,, 1927. Being an Account of the Life of the Right Hon. Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, P.C., C.H., T.D., M.P. Octavo. Original blue cloth, title gilt to the spine and to the upper board within a blind double fillet panel. Portrait frontispiece and 7 other plates. A little rubbed, particularly at the extremities, endpapers lightly browned, foxing to the fore-edge, else very good. First edition. The author's own copy, with his bookplate to the front pastedown, and a one-page typed letter signed from Churchill mounted on the front free endpaper. In the letter he thanks Roberts for sending him a copy of the book, explaining; "Although … I would rather that nothing of this kind had been published, yet I should like to recognise the great consideration and courtesy with which you have treated me, and to thank you for all the friendly things you say". Churchill writes on Chartwell stationery, the letter dated 29 September 1927, one day before the publication of the book. More than twenty pages of clipped reviews are mounted on blanks bound in after the Index, a four-page printed synopsis has been tipped in before the half-title, and Roberts has annotated the imprint to show the two subsequent editions, or rather impressions, of 1927. A "fourth edition", with a current evaluation of the new Prime Minister, was published by Newnes in 1940. Roberts is a rather obscure miscellaneous writer who contributed to Orage's The New Era on a variety of subjects, published a number of books on spiritualism having met Gurdijeff while travelling in Russia in 1919, but is best known for a slew of true crime and crime fiction publications in the 1930s. Roberts dedicates the book to the Countess of Birkenhead, having previously written a biography of the Earl, F.E. Smith, Churchill's parliamentary sparring partner, and co-founder of The Other Club. Roberts's odd nom de plume is drawn from his admiration for Smith: "F.E.-sian".

        The Twenty-Third Psalm

Rome, Italy, 1927. This edition is in English, not in Italian. With a preface by Enrico Sartorio. This edition is strictly limited to one hundred signed copies, of which this is copy no. 5, owned by Mrs. Antoinette Murphy, and with the artist's signature in a neat black ink hand, "Paschetto, Paolo." This edition was privately printed in Rome, Italy. There is no printer's attribution save for the vague reference, Grafia, Rome. Printed on P. M. Fabriano paper. Full vellum binding, likely from lamb or kid, and thus quite appropriate to the theme of the Psalm, the Lord charged with the well-being of a flock of sheep. To the front board a stamped-in, three-color image of Jesus carrying on his shoulders a lamb. No lettering whatever to the spine or boards. The spine is attractively hubbed. Virtually unbumbed spine head and tail, and with fairly sharp corners, except that the upper corners are moderately bumped. 15.25 x 13.25 inches. The binding is in excellent condition and the hinges are strong. The text block is firmly bound in. Approximately 34 unnumbered pages, including the preliminaries. The design of the title page and the decorations throughout the book are by Paul Paschetto. With nine original woodcuts by Paschetto, all full-page, signed and dated, and tipped in. Paschetto's signature is in the form of a round device, evocative of Carolingian name devices for kings and noble persons, but also highly reminiscent of the censor seals found on certain Japanese ukiyo-e prints. With a line in black ink from the Psalm on the page opposite each wood-cut, the lines with capitals in red and with surrounds in a very pale green, lending a sort of light, celestial effect. An exceptionally clean copy, and rather tight. Very gently read. No slipcase. A Very Good Plus copy over all, with all tipped-in wood-cut illustrations in Fine condition. The artist, Paolo Paschetto, 1885-1963, was a devout Christian who apparently regarded his iconographic art as a calling or avocation as much as a profession. He served as a professor at the Royal Academy of Art in Rome. He was known in Italy as one of the foremost black-and-white artists and illustrators.. Signed by Illustrator. First Edition Thus. Full-Leather. Very Good Plus. Illus. by Paschetto, Paul; Paschetto, Paolo. Limited Edition.

        LITORAL: Octubre, 1927 - Numeros 5, 6, 7 (Homenaje a Don Luis de Gongora)

San Lorenzo, 1927. First Edition. Wraps. Very good. Large 8vo. Near fine in original stiff pictorial wraps in very good original blue letterpressed dustjacket. Front pictorial wrapper features a full color lithographic print by Juan Gris. Mild toning to extremities of the issue, touches of wear to edges. Tiny tear to top of spine. Some offsetting here and there. Else bright and sound. Jacket has some light chipping., fading along the edges. "SERIALS DIVISION SAMPLE FILE" stamp to front DJ panel, else no other intitutional markings. A well-preserved copy. 4pp. letterpressed promotional flyer for Litoral additionally loosely laid in. With its cover by Juan Gris ("A don Luis," completed shortly before his death), full-color Picasso lithographic still life, and drawing by Salvador Dali ("Hommage to Góngora"), this fourth issue of LITORAL is a landmark of Spanish surrealism. But even more than that, it represents one of the galvanizing events of the Generation of '27, whose first meeting, like this issue, commemorated the 300th anniversary of the death of Luis de Góngora. Among the poets that came to define that generation, included in this issue are Vicente Aleixandre, Manuel Altolaguirre, Jose Bergamin, Rogelia Buendia, Luis Cernuda, Gerardo Diego, Federico Garcia Lorca, Pedro Garfias, Jorge Guillen, Juan Larrea, Emilio Prados, Joaquín Romero Murube, and Adriano del Valle. Also includes Manuel de Falla's setting of one poem to music, reproduced in holograph. An extraordinary issue.

        Sea and Sardinia

London: Martin Secker,, 1927. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt. Spine and edges of boards faded, light dampstaining and marking to boards, endpapers mildly foxed, occasional faint spotting to text. A very good copy. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Lilian Gair Wilkinson, from D. H. Lawrence, with many thanks for her kindness & her cake. 26 July 1927". Wilkinson, her husband and children were Lawrence's English neighbours when he and Frieda lived in Florence. In a letter to his niece Margaret 'Peg' King in 1926 Lawrence mentions that the Wilkinsons, who used to tour England with their puppet show, would send her "into fits" if she met them, adding that he is trying to persuade them to bring their show to Italy, for which he has offered to "bang the drum in the Italian villages". Lawrence's hugely compelling and often very funny diary of his and Frieda's stay in Sardinia was originally published in the US in 1921, and in the UK in 1923; this is the UK third edition.

      - 1927 omputation of the coefficient of spontaneous emission of an atom (Wikipedia). He "supplied a systematic procedure for transferring the characteristic quantum phenomenon of discreteness of physical quantities from the quantum mechanical treatment of particles to a corresponding treatment of field. Later, Dirac's procedure became a model for the quantization of other fields as well" (Stanford website). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Harrison and Sons.         Outskirt Episodes.

Des Moines, Iowa: Success Composition & Printing Co., 1927. - 8vo., (8 x 5 ½ inches). Photograph of the author tipped in on title page. Original publisher's maroon cloth, front cover and spine lettered in gilt; dust jacket (large strip missing from dust jacket). First edition. "The author of this story was fitted from childhood for the wild, turbulent life he experienced in the wild and woolly west of early days. While unschooled in books, his skill with horse an gun gave him a wide acquaintance on the outskirts where mounted vagabonds lived a very romantic, exciting life. It is along this line of outdoor life, where every man was a law unto himself, that he speaks between these covers of these unusual incidents" (Introductory). The episodes in this volume recount the adventures of the outlaws in the Rocky Mountains during the great westward expansion of the Union Pacific Railroad. "This rare book is the personal narrative of the author's life and adventures in the Wyoming country and his experiences among the Rocky Mountain outlaws in the days when the Union Pacific was building westward. The author tells about Tom Horn's killings and his execution" (Adams). Tom Horn (1860-1903) was an Old West lawman, scout, soldier, hired gunman, detective, outlaw, and assassin. During his four years as a Pinkerton detective he participated in regular shoot-outs, killing seventeen men, outstripping many of the more famous Western gunmen. Ironically, he was hanged in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the day before his 43rd birthday, for a murder that he likely did not commit.       London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1927., 1927. First edition. 8vo. One of only 250 copies signed by the author. Fine copy in printed wrappers. Queen's Quorum says "... a decade before, Susan Glaspell had written a one-act play called 'Trifles,' suggested by a murder acccount she had read in an Iowa newspaper, After the play had become famous, Miss Glaspell recast the material into a short story and titled it A JURY OF HER PEERS. like the play, the short story became a celebrated piece of literature. It was first printed in 'Every Week,' issue of May 5, 1917, and later reprinted by Edward J. O'Brien in his THE BEST SHORT STORIES OF 1917. The story, however has never been included in any of Susan Glaspell's own books published in America; but what is not generally known ... and this is an important bibliographic revelation .... is that the story has had a separate book publication in England. The first edition of A JURY OF HER PEERS is one of the series of Benn's Yellow Books and 'consists of 250 copies for sale, each of which is signed by the author.' This beautifully wrought tale of murder, 'morbidly frugal in expression, but candidly naked in substance' represents pure New England Gothic ... and pure artistry." In a rural community in turn-of-the century Iowa, men search a farmer's bedroom for evidence of his murderer. Meanwhile, downstairs in the kitchen, two women choose to hide the evidence that would provide their neighbor's motive for killing her husband. QUEEN'S QUORUM 75.

        Album of Japanese Matchbox Labels

[1930s?]. Collection of over 280 matchbox labels laid down in an oblong album. Album measures 15 x 21.5cm. Some labels are torn with a little loss to corners and edges and there is some wear to others. An attractive album. The delightful images featured on these labels are largely advertisements of restaurants and cafés, but also featured are bars, drinks, a bank, barbers, pool halls, mah-jong parlour, petrol stations, inns, fruit shops, Western-style apparel and accessories shops, Shiseido, medicine, and so on. These businesses were located in Tokyo or the surrounding regions. Although none of the labels has a date, they are probably labels from the Taisho and early Showa Eras before the end of World War II. The kanji used in these labels is old one, which indicates that the labels were made before the end of the war. There are two labels advertising Showa Bank. This bank was established in 1927 after the Showa Financial Crisis to rescue depositors of and companies which had business relations with the failed banks. Showa Bank existed until 1944. There is one label advertising a movie, Tawamureni koi-ha sumaji ???????? (No Trifling with Love) which premiered in 1933. There are two labels advertising Kabuki plays at the Kabuki-za Theatre. One of them shows the play title, "Ito Hirobimi to Li Ko-sho ???????? [Ito Hirobumi and Li Hong-zhang]" This play was performed in 1933. Some of the shops and companies represented in these labels are still trading today. Examples of these businesses are Takashimaya Department Store, Shiseido, and a restaurant, Seiyo-ken. Matches started to be mass-produced from 1870s in Japan. Matches fast became one of Japan's major export products and attractive copper-plate printed labels with multi-colours first appeared in 1879. In 1889 the value of match exports exceeded a million yen and the countries of export included Australia. The continued rise in the popularity of Japanese matches was reflected in the rising revenue that these match exports brought into Japan. The export revenue total of a million yen reached in 1889 was more than doubled by 1892 to 2.2 million, by 1899 it was almost 6.3 million yen, in 1902 over 8 million yen and by 1905 the product accounted for 10 million yen a year in exports. By 1896, 75% of matches used in China were made in Japan. Matchbox labels became a popular medium for advertising restaurants and cafes, and shops. During the Taisho and Showa era it was a common practice for businesses to have these delightful tiny advertisments as part of their marketing. The images included in this album are striking examples of the sophisicated world of design in Japan at the time. .
