Bestiaire. Original drawing in India ink.

NP, Paris 1927 - 6" x 3 3/4". Original finished drawing in India ink matted and framed in modern black wood, not examined out of the glass. This exceptional and fascinating art work has been made according to Remizov's favorite method of composition, which is a mixte medium collage, a technique of gluing superimposed multiple layers of paper, with frames or borders defining each individual drawing and the work as a whole. The Bestiaire depicts three allegoric animal characters, of which one can be identified as a hog. Remizov's predilection for fantastic, distorted, fragmented and non-figurative images is clearly shown in this drawing. This work is dated "Paris 1927" and the caption is in Russian and French. This stunning and unique piece of Art is in near fine condition.

Stavba a basen'. Umeni dnes a zitra 1919-1927.

Prague: Olymp, sv. 7-8 1927 - Quarto 24 x 16cm., wrappers, 192pp., 28 plates. Cover and book design by Teige. A collection of Teige’s ideas on Poetism, which rejected any sense of elitism in the arts, especially poetry, which he viewed as the distanciation from a living art. Poetism calls for the industrial arts to integrate with the fine arts and integrate in everyday experience and usage. This is couched in the context of a revolutionary ideology and leans towards constructivist idealism. It is one the author’s most original contributions to 20th century esthetics. Stavba a básen' is a high point of the devetsil movement and is the author’s confession of a vision that he would strive towards continuously. Illustrated with examples of the international avant-garde of the day, including le Corbusier, Lissitzky, Picasso and many others, as well as the leading exponents in Czechoslovakia, Styrský and Toyen. This copy inscribed by Teige to F. Gökari, 1927. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Le Morte D'Arthur - Third Edition

      E. P. Dutton 1927 - Not until this, the third edition, was an effort made to collect the fullest body of those illustrations which Beardsley had originally intended to accompany the seminal text of Malory. Published in America by E. P. Dutton in 1927 in an edition limited to 1600 copies. Introduction by Professor John Rhys and a note on Beardsley by Aymer Vallance. Beardsley devoted no small degree of himself - and his extraordinary talent - to the illustration of Le Morte D'Arthur. Lacking the original dust jacket, this is a very good copy marred only by abrasion to the cloth at the top and bottom foredges of the front board and just a slight bit of rubbing to the lower corner of the front board decoration. Bound in cloth with beveled edges, spine and front panel decorated and lettered in gold - a beautiful and visually appealing example of what happens when the proper literary work is illustrated by the proper artist - and then presented with appropriate care by the right publisher. The book bears the original woodcuts of J.J. Lankes on bookplates of the owners ( husband and wife ) Harry O'Neil and Margaret MvcPherson. A very attractive copy.         Le Puits de Jacob

Paris: Albin Michel, Editeur, 1927. Limited ed. Original Wraps. Fine. SZYK, Arthur. BENOIT, Pierre. Le Puits de Jacob [The Well of Jacob]. Illustrated by Arthur Szyk. Paris: Albin Michel, Editeur, (1927). Preface by A. de Monzie. 323 pp. Text in French. Title page color vignette. Twelve full color pochoir plates and 15 full color illuminated letters as chapter headings [representing the 12 Tribes of Israel]. Original glassine covered wrappers in original paper over boards folding case with ribbon tie. Fine Condition.& & FIRST EDITION, limited to 300 numbered copies.& & Le Puits de Jacob —along with La Tentation de Saint Antoine [The Temptation of St. Anthony]— is representative of a uniquely distinctive period in the career of Arthur Szyk. After moving to Paris in 1921, he met with early success in the form of profit-making gallery exhibitions. He was in demand as an illustrator and gaining rapid fame even with a painting style contrary to the popular French abstractionist school. He was perfecting his miniaturist technique but in an experimental environment which was to change dramatically in the next few years. The faces and background settings in Le Puits are supremely modern in look. They epitomize The Jazz Age. Paris in the 1920s was overflowing with artists and poets, freethinkers and go-getters from every nation in the world. Politics, fashion, religion—all were in a state of flux and re-evaluation.& & Pierre Benoit's novel took advantage of this brief window of time to safely ponder the life of a modern Jew in France. Le Affaire de Dreyfus had occurred nearly 30 years before and Hitler's Nazis had not yet disturbed the quiet (but always present) anti-Semitism lurking in French society. The Well of Jacob is the story of a worldly woman, Rachel Bernheim, whose acknowledgment of ancient Jewish tradition and ritual provides her with a spiritual re-awakening. She becomes a Zionist and devotes her time and fortune to supporting Jewish settlers in Palestine.& & Szyk was an excellent choice to illustrate this story of modern Jewish Zionists, as he had been sent on a tour of Palestine in 1914. Together with a group of young Polish-Jewish writers and artists, he visited Jewish settlements and made a visual record of the people and landscapes. The outbreak of World War I sent Szyk home again to Poland, where he became a soldier in the Russian army.& & In his preface, A. De Monzie, a one-time Minister of Public Education in France, writes of his gratitude toward M. Benoit for providing a meaningful lesson for their country:& & “France has a particular duty of being present and assisting in every enterprise of collective emancipation. We have no mandate in Palestine, but we have as many interests there as memories.” This public support, he reiterates, is nothing more than his duty…“the brilliant colors of Szyk are worth more.”& & Indeed, the brilliant colors of Szyk presented here have no equal (other than in Saint Antoine) as they were printed on Arches vellum paper in the now lost art form of pochoir printing. This method of illustrative reproduction mimics the artist's work by utilizing actual watercolors and gouaches applied through an elaborate process of stencil guides. It was first used by the ancient Chinese and was brought to perfection by the French from about 1880 to 1935. Each image appears to have been painted on the page by hand.& & Le Puits de Jacob is truly one of Szyk's most fascinating books. The rarity of the artist's style and supreme beauty executed in its production confirms its stature as a true Szyk jewel.&

A fine copy of the original &#147;Shakespeare and Company&#148; --Sylvia Beach-- advertising card is still enclosed, the text block very fine, the wrappers with only some minor and expected mellowing or evidence of age, but clearly an unused, unread copy and quite rare thus. SCARCE EARLY PRINTING OF ULYSSES. THE RARE TRUE SHAKESPEARE AND COMPANY 1927 PRINTING IN UNREAD, UNOPENED, PRISTINE STATE. The most important novel of the twentieth century . ULYSSES can be viewed as the pinnacle of the Modernist movement, and its impact on all subsequent western literature is unmistakable. Such writers as Virginia Woolf, John Dos Passos, William Faulkner, Samuel Beckett, Malcolm Lowry, and Anthony Burgess have all paid tribute, consciously or unconsciously, to Joyce&#39;s influence. Burgess as well pronounced it the greatest single work in the English literature of this century, and he is not alone in that opinion.<br> According to James Spoerri, "This fortunate combination of printer and publisher resulted in the appearance of ULYSSES as a book whose physical aspect is particularly suited to its content. It is (an)... inviting volume, the blue and white of its covers subtly evocative of the Greece whose epic it so closely parallels" (quoted in the catalogue for the Garden Sale, Sotheby&#39;s 1989).

        My Life As An Explorer

Doubleday, Page & Co., Garden City, NY 1927 - In original blue cloth binding with minimal library identifiers, and from the collection of John Pearson, former member and one-time president of the Rowfant Club of Cleveland; Signed by the celebrated explorer and author for the Museum of The Peaceful Arts, Manhattan, which in 1927 was located in the old Scientific American Building. The Museum of the Peaceful Arts later became the Museum of Science and Industry. This is Amundsen's last book, and signed copies are extremely hard to find. Born in Borge, Ostfold, Norway, Roald Amundsen is said by many to be the greatest Polar explorer of the 20th century. In 1911, Roald Amundsen and his men were the first humans to reach the South Pole. A 1925 flight over the North Pole nearly met with disaster, but Amundsen prevailed. He and his men returned safely in their Dornier Do J Flying Boat N-25, after being on the ice for over three weeks. In 1926, Amundsen made a historic flight over the Arctic aboard the Norweigan airship Norge, becoming the first undisputed explorer to reach the North Pole. The previous claims of Cook, Peary and Byrd as being the first are all in dispute. On June 18, 1928, Amundsen, flying with a rescue party searching for the Italian airship, Italia, crashed somewhere over the Barents Sea. Amundsen and his aircraft have never been found. As recently as 2009, the Royal Norweigan Navy unsuccessfully searched for the wreckage using an unmanned submarine, Hugin 1000. This former Museum of Peaceful Arts library copy is thusly marked in a few places, including the call numbers on the spine, and lacks its dust jacket; The boards are lightly shelf worn, spine extremities and corners worn and/or bumped.
