        Forty-Seven Love Poems

London: Jonathan Cape 1927 - Translated from the original Russian by Natalie Duddington. First edition, limited issue of 300 numbered copies, of which this is #52. Publisher's blue cloth, with the spine lettered in gilt, publisher's device to the rear board in blind, printed on laid paper. Near fine, with some light wear to the extremities, minor toning to the spine, faint offsetting to the endpapers, former owner's inscription to the front pastedown, otherwise bright and fresh pages. A lovely copy. Scarce. Forty-Seven Love Poems is a collection of Akhmatova's poetry from 1912-1921 arranged in loose chronological order. Although she had already published five collections of poetry in her native Russian, this volume represents Akhmatova's first English language publication. In her introduction, translator Natalie Duddington acknowledges to problematic nature of translated poetry, but states the magnificence of Akhmatova's poetry is not lost in translation. Duddington explains, "The melody of the verse is of course lost irretrievably; but beauty of sound is not the chief characteristic of Akhmatova's poetry." Instead, she writes, it is the "extraordinary concreteness;" her poems "produce the impression of an intimate conversation rather than a song and indeed she deliberately uses the language of everyday life." Along with her husband poet Nikolai Gumilev, Akhmatova lead the Acmeism movement in Russian poetry, whose use of firm and classic structure stood in stark contrast with the Russian Symbolists' apocalyptic ideology. Printed in red, blue and black, number one hundred and twenty-one of two hundred and nineteen copies (with another six on vellum), generally regarded (with the Canterbury Tales and the Four Gospels) as the presses finest work. Franklin noting that "Gill in these Golden Cockerel books uniquely fused these two arts again, illustration with decoration ... They rank very high in the range of Gill's work" (Franklin, The Private Presses, 2nd ed, page 142). Cave and Manson also note that the edition of two hundred and twenty five copies "sold out very quickly, and purchasers' pleasure was increased by seeing the book rapidly appreciate in value" (Cave and Manson, History of the Golden Cockerel Press, page 52), and the Chanticleer notes, "A satisfying book. Owing to the small number of copies printed this volume is rare and always quoted at a good premium". Ernest Riley was formerly in charge of the binderies at the House of Lords and bound at least one incunable in the University of Glasgow Library. Cave and Manson 50; Chanticleer 50. First Thus. Half Morocco and Cloth. Good+. Illus. by Gill, Eric. Folio. Limited Edition.

        TREASURE ISLAND

Benn 1927 - First edition, Edition de Luxe. Number 4 of only 50 copies, signed by Edmund Dulac. Publisher's creamy vellum with leather title label. Top edge gilt. A very good copy indeed, vellum a little bowed with a couple of minor marks. Page edges slightly browned and some foxing to the preliminaries and occasionally to a plate mount. Twelve colour plates and numerous black and white drawings in the text. The tiny print run makes this one of the rarest of all the illustrated gift books. The illustrations for this book mark a new departure in Dulac's work. He enters a phase of greens and blues, views the scenes from above and afar. Hughey says, "The detailing and design of the pictures present some of Dulac's most careful and superb painting." In fact, the watercolours he produced for this book were his own favourites.
