        The Exile No. 1

Dijjon: Maurice Darantiere. Spring 1927. First. First edition. 12mo. 92pp. Paper wrappers. Fair only with chipped front wrapper that has been professionally restored, extensive chipping at the spine, and first six pages also chipped. The first issue of Pound's short-lived literary magazine that includes "Part of Canto XX," a poem from Ernest Hemingway, and contributions from Richard Aldington, Guy Hickok, and John Rodker. Interestingly, Hemingway's name is mistakenly listed as "E.W. Hemingway" on the cover when his middle name was Miller and his one-line poem, "Neo-Thomist" is also misspelled and hand corrected by Pound in each of the 500 copies that were printed. Laid in is a postcard advertising the magazine and a small slip from New York newspaper man, John M. Price. He not only inspired Pound to start the magazine, but was in charge of distributing the first issue in States and seeking out contributions for future issues. .

        METROPOLIS

London: The Readers Library Publishing Company Ltd., n.d.. [1927]. Small octavo, pp. [1-13] 14-250 [251: blank] [252: printer's imprint] [253-256: blank] [note: first and last leaves used as front and rear paste-downs],. original decorated red-brown boards, front and spine panels stamped in gold.. A fine copy in fine first printing dust jacket (with wraparound. illustration by Aubrey Hammond) that does not list METROPOLIS on the. rear flap. A stunning copy in the striking four-color pictorial dust. jacket which is virtually as new save for just a hint of age-. darkening to the spine panel. (#90499). First edition in English. The first printing without mention of this title in list of Readers Library books on page [7]. Novelization of the screenplay by Fritz Lang and Thea von Harbou of Lang's 1926 UFA film which was about three hours long in it's original seventeen-reel version. "Though often described as the first SF epic of the cinema, this famous German film -- of which no complete version now exists -- has just as much in common with the cinema of the Gothic. Though set in a future visually emphasized by towering buildings and vast brooding machines, the city of Metropolis has an underworld dark and medieval in atmosphere ... The story of METROPOLIS is trite and its politics ludicrously simplistic; but these flaws cannot detract from the sheer visual power of the film -- a combination of the high Expressionistic sets (the work of art directors Otto Hunte, Erich Kettelhut and Karl Vollbrecht) and Lang's direction ... METROPOLIS, which was extremely expensive and not a financial success, almost bankrupted the studio that made it (UFA). The film was cut almost as soon as it was released, and -- still in the 1920s -- shortened yet more radically in the UK and USA. Even recently restored archival versions are half an hour shorter than the original." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 804-5. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 3-23; (1981) 2-112; (1987) 2-123; (1995) 2-132; and (2004) II-1197. Bleiler, Science- Fiction: The Early Years 1040. Lewis, Utopian Literature, p. 198.

Inscribed by the author to Lady Ottoline Morrell on the title page, "For Lady Ottoline with the best regards of Thornton Wilder / London January 1929". In a very good (supplied) dustwrapper, which has had some restoration to the top of the spine. With: Two autograph letters from Wilder to Morrell, both in original autograph envelopes. The first, one page of Savoy note paper, dated 12 Jan 1929, states how he and his sister are looking forward to meeting Morrell, and thanking her for her "beautiful words about my book.". The second, one page of Yale University Elizabethan Club note paper, dated 2 Feb 1929, thanks Morrell for her hospitality and for a copy of "The Sentimental Journey". He also adds, "Your apologising for the monogram and the marginal markings will not be accepted; they make the book a sort of happy palimpsest". Wilder won the Pulitzer Prize in 1928. This classic adventure story was made into a very successful film in 1944. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Ballad of the Brown Girl. An Old Retold.

New York and London: Harper & Brothers 1927 - 8vo., black cloth and beige boards, with paper spine label printed in black. First edition. One of five hundred copies, especially issued by "Opportunity Journal of Negro Life." The Dedication Copy, marked “A” (with the printed dedication: “To Witter Bynner”) and inscribed: “To Witter – For whom this poem was written, with no thought of the pleasurable friendship it would bring. Sincerely, Countee Cullen,” on the extra colophon leaf; with Bynner’s library bookplate ----- Witter Bynner (1881-1968) once concocted an esoteric rating to evaluate Countee Cullen’s first volume of verse, Color. Using zeros and wing-shaped marks, the Brooklyn-born bard and editor graded each poem (poor, average, good, excellent): 36 scored zero; 13, one wing; 7, two wings; and one (“Incident”), three wings. The 1925 assessment reflected Bynner’s own lofty standards and honest perception of Cullen’s writing. Two years earlier in the Witter Bynner Undergraduate Poetry Contest, the New York University sophomore disappointingly won “honorable mention” for “The Ballad of the Brown Girl” by judges Carl Sandburg, Alice Corbin, and Bynner. According to biographer David Levering Lewis, in November (two months before The Crisis announced the contest winners), Bynner had discreetly consoled Cullen about being outvoted in ceding the poem top prize. When the exquisitely crafted tale about a doomed interracial relationship was published in 1927, Bynner inherited the first copy. Although the pages were never cut, the dedicatee’s memory was unquestionably clear: still present on the title page is the faint imprint of three wing-shaped marks.         Meet Mr Mulliner

McClelland & Stewart 1927 - I am not sure but it looks as though prior to 1927 Herbert Jenkins bound the Canadian editions in their format with MCclellend and Stewart prelims and their badging on the spine of the book .There seems to be a bit of a miss mash with the early editions until they bound their own editions.I'm guessing that both publishers waited until they were satisfied that there was a worthwhile market before M and S took over ,but at this stage theres not enough information to be sure and as these copies rarely turn up it will need more time .         Giants in the Earth: A Saga of the Prairie

Harper & Brothers, Publishers, New York 1927 - The special presentation edition, bound in finely woven tan cloth with impressionistic cloud designs in soft colors, especially on the rear panel. The delicate colors on the front boards have faded away. With a paper label on the spine: title and author and presentation edition, autographed. On the limitation page: "This Presentation Edition of Giants in the Earth is limited to one hundred copies signed by the author of which this is number 13. Signed brightly in blue ink "O.E. Rolvaag." The binding is worn, faded and lightly shaken. Internally very good and clean. "In his novels, Rölvaag was primarily concerned with the theme of immigration, which he explored in his largely autobiographical Letters from America (1912) and The Boat of Longing (1921). He took a one-year leave of absence from St. Olaf College and lived in lonely cabin in Minnesota to write the epic that would become Giants in the Earth. He originally wrote all his novels in Norwegian and then helped translate them into English. Two novels, I de dage (In Those Days) and Riket grundlaeges (The Kingdom Is Founded) were first published in Norway in 1924 and 1925. They were then translated into English and published in the United States in one volume, Giants in the Earth (1927)." (Spark Notes) Worn with light vertical crease to spine Presentation Edition, Stated "First Edition" and "Autographed" [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
