The journal's objective, as set out in one of its first issues, was to "re-examine the ideology and practices of so-called leftist art, and to abandon individualism to increase art's value for developing communism."

Owing to the small number of copies printed this volume is rare and always quoted at a good premium".         NOW WE'RE IN THE AIR (1927)

USA 1927 - Vintage original 27 x 41" (68 x 103 cm.) one sheet poster style B, USA. Wallace Beery, Raymond Hatton, Louise Brooks, Russell Simpson. Dir: Frank Strayer; Paramount. An early yet prominent depiction of iconic Louise Brooks on a poster. This was a "buddy film", with Beery and Hatton playing cousins who get mixed up with the U.S. Flying Corps while on a quest to collect the fortune of their grandfather, who was an aviation nut. It is, unfortunately, a lost film. Beery and Brooks would soon team for the classic BEGGARS OF LIFE. Director Strayer would be known for the BLONDIE film series of the 1930s. Specific to 1927 only, Paramount produced one sheet posters with an open area towards the bottom to display their theater's information. Louise Brooks posters are extremely rare. On linen, this poster was in very nice condition even prior to linen backing, NEAR FINE.

        SUNRISE (1927)

USA 1927 - Vintage original 15 x 11" (37 x 28 cm.) folded / 35 x 22" (87 x 55 cm.) unfolded special promotional poster, USA. George O'Brien, Janet Gaynor, Margaret Livingston, dir: F. W. Murnau; Fox. The full title of this classic is "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans", and that was most appropriate. It is the story of a young married farmer and his wife. When he falls under the spell of a city woman, he attempts to take the life of his wife -- but he cannot, and they spend a wonderful day in the city together, falling more in love with each other. The film likely is Murnau's greatest work and is to this day felt to be amongst the very finest of all silent films. It is the film which people come away from understanding the great artistic achievement of what silent motion picture-making was all about. It was greatly honored in its day as well, basically winning an Academy Award during the very first Oscar ceremony for Best Picture, Unique and Artistic Production -- a very appropriate award indeed. Gaynor would win the first Best Actress award for this and two other films that year. Today, it has the distinction of being the very first silent film to be released on Blu-ray. No explanation can do this film justice and it just needs to be experienced. Much of the film was shot on locations at Big Bear and San Bernardino National Forest, California, but it appears as well as the studio back lot. This special promotional poster presents itself as a program but then opens up to a two-sided poster promoting the mastery of the film with reviews, 16 scene still images, 3 images from the Carthay Circle Theatre premiere in Los Angeles, as well as opening in Philadelphia and New York and theatre play statistics on the reverse side. Cover art of Janet Gaynor and George O'Brien is by Jochimsen. Truly, Fox realized the brilliance of this film during the initial release. Folded, minor wear. ABOUT FINE.

Autograph musical working manuscript of the Epilogue for Violoncello, Piano and Tape. Titled by the composer "Epilog "Peer Gynt' " at head of first page. Unsigned and undated, but Hamburg, February 1993

4 pp. (471 measures). Large folio (425 x 230 mm.). Unbound. Notated in both pencil and ink on 32-stave "Star Nr. 37" music manuscript paper in the composer's small, dense hand. An active composing manuscript of the majority of the work, presenting material for the cello at rehearsal number 4 to several measures after rehearsal number 54. With numerous deletions, changes and corrections. Slightly worn. In very good condition overall. . Epilogue, one of Schnittke's most expressive chamber works, was written for the famed Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich (1927-2007), who gave the work its first performance with Schnittke's wife Irina at Evian on Lake Geneva on May 20, 1993. The work is an arrangement of the final part of Schnittke's ballet Peer Gynt (1986). Schnittke is often considered to be the successor to Shostakovich as Russia's premiere composer. His early music showed the strong influence of Dmitri Shostakovich, but he went on to adopt a very polystylistic approach to composition. As his health worsened, however, he adopted a somewhat bleaker but more accessible style; some Schnittke scholars have argued, in fact, that it is the composer's late works that will ultimately be considered as the most influential of his entire output.

The book is a bit fragile to handle but for a 82 year old first printing that was used as a library book at some point, it's held up rather well. Back of the book has 5 pages of advertisements including 29 Tom Swifts, 7 Don Sturdys, 10 Radio Boys tiTLes, 5 Garry Graysons and 5 Western Stories for Boys titles. Also the letter 't' in "talking" on page 31, line 12 is complete. A tough, tough book to locate and a cool part of Hardy history since it's the very first printing of the first title in the series.
