Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1927. First Edition, ninth printing, and the true Paris issue of the 1927 printing. Square 8vo, bound in the publisher&#146;s original blue wraps formatted as the first edition of 1922, printed and lettered in white on the upper cover and spine. [6], 735 pp. An especially well preserved and handsome copy, especially so for the original wrappers and textblock which remains largely unopened and pristine. A fine copy of the original &#147;Shakespeare and Company&#148; --Sylvia Beach-- advertising card is still enclosed, the text block very fine, the wrappers with only some minor and expected mellowing or evidence of age, but clearly an unused, unread copy and quite rare thus. SCARCE EARLY PRINTING OF ULYSSES. THE RARE TRUE SHAKESPEARE AND COMPANY 1927 PRINTING IN UNREAD, UNOPENED, PRISTINE STATE. The most important novel of the twentieth century . ULYSSES can be viewed as the pinnacle of the Modernist movement, and its impact on all subsequent western literature is unmistakable. Such writers as Virginia Woolf, John Dos Passos, William Faulkner, Samuel Beckett, Malcolm Lowry, and Anthony Burgess have all paid tribute, consciously or unconsciously, to Joyce&#39;s influence. Burgess as well pronounced it the greatest single work in the English literature of this century, and he is not alone in that opinion.<br> According to James Spoerri, "This fortunate combination of printer and publisher resulted in the appearance of ULYSSES as a book whose physical aspect is particularly suited to its content. It is (an)... inviting volume, the blue and white of its covers subtly evocative of the Greece whose epic it so closely parallels" (quoted in the catalogue for the Garden Sale, Sotheby&#39;s 1989).

        My Life As An Explorer

Doubleday, Page & Co., Garden City, NY 1927 - In original blue cloth binding with minimal library identifiers, and from the collection of John Pearson, former member and one-time president of the Rowfant Club of Cleveland; Signed by the celebrated explorer and author for the Museum of The Peaceful Arts, Manhattan, which in 1927 was located in the old Scientific American Building. The Museum of the Peaceful Arts later became the Museum of Science and Industry. This is Amundsen's last book, and signed copies are extremely hard to find. Born in Borge, Ostfold, Norway, Roald Amundsen is said by many to be the greatest Polar explorer of the 20th century. In 1911, Roald Amundsen and his men were the first humans to reach the South Pole. A 1925 flight over the North Pole nearly met with disaster, but Amundsen prevailed. He and his men returned safely in their Dornier Do J Flying Boat N-25, after being on the ice for over three weeks. In 1926, Amundsen made a historic flight over the Arctic aboard the Norweigan airship Norge, becoming the first undisputed explorer to reach the North Pole. The previous claims of Cook, Peary and Byrd as being the first are all in dispute. On June 18, 1928, Amundsen, flying with a rescue party searching for the Italian airship, Italia, crashed somewhere over the Barents Sea. Amundsen and his aircraft have never been found. As recently as 2009, the Royal Norweigan Navy unsuccessfully searched for the wreckage using an unmanned submarine, Hugin 1000. This former Museum of Peaceful Arts library copy is thusly marked in a few places, including the call numbers on the spine, and lacks its dust jacket; The boards are lightly shelf worn, spine extremities and corners worn and/or bumped.         Woodcock at Evening. A fine etching of the bird in flight, signed in the plate "W.J.S.", and in pencil "W.J. Schaldach" in lower right margin

n.p., [1927] - A beautiful impression, with a rich tint, on soft cream wove paper, showing a woodcock in flight approaching a branch which rises vertically from the lower margin. This appeared in Schaldach's 1946 "Upland Gunning" (No. 15), and of it the artist writes: "This is my first etched subject. Drawn with a needle on a grounded plate.bitten in with nitric acid, fifty percent, in a few minutes and printed without further work. It is etching in its simplest form--the suggestion of a design without any of the elegance of which the medium is capable when carried to its limits". One Schaldach's earliest works on copper, and correspondingly scarce, it was preceded only by a few drypoints earlier in 1927, the year he was introduced to the intaglio printmaking media. Despite his disparaging comment, it has a good deal of austere elegance, and is a historic forerunner of his more detailed prints to come. AN IMPORTANT WORK One of an edition of 50. Image size 6-3/8 x 4-1/4 inches, with margins, overall size 10 x 7 inches. Faint hinge residue on verso, else fine. Ordeman, William J. Schaldach: Artist, Author, Sportsman, p. 27 et seq [Attributes: Hard Cover]

BERLIN GERMANY 1927 - On offer is an original typed letter signed [TLS] dated 1927 in German by Magnus Davidsohn, chief cantor of the Fasanenstrasse synagogue from its opening in 1912 until its closing by the Nazis in 1936 being a letter of introduction for Frederick Solomon, the German Expressionist artist/Rabbi. The letter begins by saying that Solomon has received a comprehensive and good-quality education as a choirmaster. "He owns a nobly and elegantly sounding baritone voice." Davidsohn, a trained opera singer, played the part of King Heinrich in Gustav Mahler's 1899 production of Lohengrin (see pp. 172-4 of Gustav Mahler Vienna: The Years of Challenge, by Henry-Louis de la Grange (New York: Oxford University Press, 1995). After leaving Berlin in 1939, he helped found Belsize Square Synagogue in London. Davidsohn and his wife were close friends with the parents of Ernst vom Rath, whose assassination in Paris precipitated Kristallnacht . Directly after vom Rath's murder, Davidsohn and his wife visited the parents of vom Rath, who assured him that they did not blame the Jews of Germany (Anthony Grenville: 'Listening to Refugee Voices: The Association of Jewish Refugees Information and Research on the Refugees from Hitler in Britain', in Refugees from the Third Reich in Britain, Yearbook of the Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies, volume 4). Magnus Davidsohn's daughter, Ilse Stanley, saved hundreds of Jews from concentration camps, and was the author of the book The Unforgotten (Beacon Press, 1957), a memoir of Weimar Germany and the Nazi years. She was also featured on an episode of the American television program "This is Your Life", where she was reunited with her father. TLS, 1927, 1p. [German]. VG. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall

        Frauenakt. Tuschzeichnung.

1927 1927 - 30 x 24 cm, Gerahmt *18.11.1895 Aarau, ?14.5.1941 Ascona (TI). 1914 Aktivdienst. 1941 stirbt Schürch an offener Tuberkulose.
