First edition. Godard started his career working under Édouard André in Paris, but in 1906 he left to establish his own practice on the French Riviera, where he opened an office in Nice in 1910. He continued there until the 1940s, during which period he worked almost exclusively designing gardens on the Côte D'Azur in the new Mediterranean style which he helped to establish along with Peto, Forestier and Bac. His JARDINS DE LA COTE D'AZUR is the most impressive contemporary publication featuring his gardens, which figure prominently among the 21 gardens it presents, including Les Palmiers at Nice and La Croix des Gardes at Cannes. Altogether nine of his gardens are shown along with others by Peto, Gréber, Duchêne and others. The selection favors, in particular, large formal gardens of the sort in which Godard specialized. His introductory text includes a history of mediterranean gardens and a chapter on the "Principes Généraux De Composition Du Jardin Moderne Sur La Côte D'Azur."Folio (44.5 x 32.5 cm); 11 pp. + 44 heliogravure plates from photographs. Loose, as issued in original three quarter cloth portfolio with paper covered boards, all ties present; gilt titling on upper cover and spine; a few scuff marks, and some discoloration to cloth and paper covers, internally fine; a very good copy.

        NOW WE ARE SIX

New York: E.P. Dutton & Co., 1927. First American Edition. First Printing, trade issue. Octavo; orange textured cloth, with titling, rule, and decorations stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; decorative endpapers; dustjacket; 103pp; illus. Base of spine gently nudged, with a touch of oxidation to gilt; very Near Fine. Dustjacket shows a faint vertical fold along the spine panel, with a 2mm closed tear to upper right corner of front flap fold; fresh and Fine in every other respect, without wear and with the colors as bright and vibrant as the day of publication. Stunning copy of the third Pooh book, chronicling the adventures of Christopher Robin, Eeyore, Piglet, and a very loveable bear. While copies of the UK edition - even very nice ones - are ubiquitous, first editions of their American counterparts are considerably less common, with copies such as this one being genuinely scarce.

Original pen and ink drawing for Troilus and Criseyde

      c. 1927. Pen and ink on paper, measuring 8 by 2 3/4 inches, matted and framed. This is Gill's design for a border that appears three times in the Golden Cockerel Press edition of Troilus and Criseyde, and it shows Chaucer sitting in a tree writing "Troilus" in a book. The design appears on pp. 179, 243, and 310 of the published work. The drawing is double-matted, and the older, inner mat bears a pencil notation: "Museum study of modern book illustration by Eric Gill," suggesting that the drawing was once part of an exhibit. A fine drawing from one of the highspots of Gill's work as a book illustrator, in a tasteful gilded frame that measures 18 1/4 by 12 1/2 inches.

1927 - This album contains 169 sepia and gelatin-silver photographs, mounted onto black cardstock leaves, many with handwritten captions, housed in an oblong leather album, 10.25" x 14.25". The photographs vary in size from 6.5" x 4.5" to 2.5" x 1.5". Added to the original images are more than 40 published photographic illustrations, some very large. This coloniail police officer's album centers on Nyeri, where he came to know many of the Kikuyu and Swahili people, resulting in some stellar snapshots of their dwellings, bomas, traditional costumes, and work as laborers for the colony. A predominant theme throughout is the training of the Askaris and the many Africans with whom he interacted. Our African adventure begins on board the "Usurama" with views of Malaga, Stromboli, Acien, and Port Said, and including a tour of Aden. ~~ Historic photographs in Nyeri include the first police station, the popular White Rhino Hotel, Askaris practicing bayonet-fighting, the town of Karatina. the Thego River Estate, Mount Kenya, etc. Street scenes in Nairobi are tranquil and charming, capturing the historic Savoy Hotel on Caledonian Road, Lamberts Ltd, McIvor's Garage, etc. Also documented is a sojourn to Chania Falls in the nearby town of Thika. On July 31, our photographer journeyed to Longido in Tanganyika [now Tanzania], stopping at the customs office with his cargo. Some interesting images show the crude yet effective ferry service as it was some 90 years ago, connecting Mombasa to the mainland. Other photographs show that the police officer became a merchant, transporting 35 cases of vermouth and 10 cases of whiskey from Mombasa to Nairobi for two different clients. Inland journeys through swampy regions required a robust six-wheel truck. ~~ Affluent, influential Europeans are seen and named on their estates and in various locales. Fellow police officers are identified by name. (In the 1920s, police duties involved night patrols in urban areas, responding to property crimes, enforcement of labor laws on settler's farms, even the execution of death sentences, with the over-riding duty of protecting Europeans and their property.) ~~ This is a very flavorful album of East Africa in the 1920s, seen through the eyes and camera lens of a police officer who had the inside track.         The World Crisis: 1916-1918, Part II

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1927. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed British first edition, first printing of the fourth volume of Churchill's history of the First World War, The World Crisis. Of The World Crisis, Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. He served as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915. After the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. Rather remarkably, he spent part of his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. The events of the 1916-1918 volumes include Churchill's time at the Front and his return to the Cabinet. Many consider the British edition aesthetically superior to the U.S., with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. British first edition dust jackets are not only extremely scarce, but notoriously brittle, particularly those for the 1916-1918 volumes. Individual jacketed volumes are rarely seen or offered outside of full, six-volume sets. Here is a near fine first printing of 1916-1918, Part II in the correct, first printing dust jacket. The blue cloth boards remain unusually clean and free of scuffing, befitting a jacketed copy. The binding remains tight with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and only trivial wear to corners and spine ends. We note a slight inward warp to the front cover. The contents remain crisp and bright with no previous ownership marks. The volume feels unread. Spotting is modest for the edition, primarily confined to the first and final leaves and the page edges. The first printing dust jacket shows shallow chipping to a maximum depth of 3/8 inch at the spine ends and edges. Shelf presentation is quite respectable, with an evenly-toned but otherwise clean dust jacket spine. A clean split all along the front hinge nearly disappears beneath the removable, archival quality clear dust jacket protector, as do partial splits at the flap folds.       Paris: L'Alliance Cinématographique Européenne, 1927. Quarto; photo-illustrated wrappers, with a single staple at mid-spine; 16pp; illus. Very mild toning at the edges, and a little faint thumbsoiling along the right edge of the front cover and left edge of the rear cover. Ciné-Miroir, the par excellence French cinema trade magazine, easily rivaled its Hollywood counterparts of the day. This issue (16 April, 1927) features cover girl Brigitte Helm in a dazzling portrait of her character Maria's double, das Maschinemensch, in Fritz Lang's cutting edge Metropolis (1927). An article with brief details about the film is present, along with Boris Bilinsky's photo-montage as part of the center spread. Also included in this installment are articles and photos about Abel Gance in 'Napoléon', Pola Negri in 'Hotel Imperial', Lilian Harvery, Clara Bow, and Bebe Daniels. The French premiere of Metropolis was on October 14th, 1927, shown at L?'Imperial for three months; this issue predates the French premiere by six months, and is among the earliest pieces of French language ephemera for this film. A desirable issue of this journal; OCLC locates 4 instiutional holdings for any issues of Ciné-Miroir, with 2 locations with probably holdings for this particular issue.

Vier Titelblätter (Russisch: Jakov Cernichov, Architekturnye fantazii. Englisch: Jacob Tchernykhov, Architectural Fictions u. Französisch: Jacques Tchernikhov, Fantaisies Architecturales). 102 S. mit 101 Kleinabbildungen im Text u. 101 einseitig bedruckte Farbtafeln auf Kunstdruckpapier. Brauner Orig.-Leinenbd. mit blindgeprägtem Rücken- u Deckeltitel.

. . Tschernikows Hauptwerk. - MoMa 1022.

The Erechtheum Measured, Drawn, and Restored By Gorham Phillips Stevens (Text and Plates)

Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press for The American School of Classical Studies, 1927. First Edition. Both volumes of this two volume set are in very good+ condition in dark blue cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spine and on the front board together with a gilt seal for The American School of Classical Studies at Athens. The Plates volume is a large folio measuring 21" by 15" with ribbon ties. There are two small 1/4" areas at the head and heel of the spine where the cloth is worn through and the same is true at the lower tips of the boards and there is an assortment of small, faint stains to the covers. The first free end page is wrinkled and shows three1/3" repaired closed tears at its lower edge. The text volume is a quarto measuring 12" by 9" with the spine slanted and with foxing to the front end sheets and a 1" square tape repair to the lower fore corner of the free end page. There is a small rent to the cloth on the front board above the second "H" in the word "Erechtheum". Faint spots of foxing are also present around all edges of the text block. Both volumes are signed in pencil by the author (Stevens) at the bottom edge of the title pages. This set came from the author's personal library. The Plates volume is unpaginated, but contains all 54 plates as called for in the nine page "Description of Plates". The plates in this volume are not loose as they have been in other copies seen. Instead, they are all bound-into what was the original chemise and modified to a case binding. The Text volume contains 673 pages including an extensive general index, indices for Greek and Latin Authors and Inscriptions, Greek Words, and Proper Names in the Inscriptions. This volume is illustrated with 236 line drawings and black and white photographs. Interestingly, the printed page 21/22 is missing replaced by the previous owner, and author, by two, typewritten pages with the complete text for the missing pages as well as two black and white photographs to replace the images missing in the printed version. World Cat and OCLC show only 41 copies of this set in libraries world wide.
