Ulysses [published in Two Worlds Monthly, ed. Samuel Roth]

New York: Two Worlds Publishing Company,, 1927]. 2 volumes, octavo. Original red pebble-grain cloth, printed paper labels to spines with limitation statements completed in manuscript, top edges gilt, red endpapers. Title pages printed in red and black. Vol. II inner hinges slightly tender with tape-repair to second leaf of advertisements. An excellent copy. First edition in book form of Samuel Roth's infamous piracy of Ulysses, this numbered 94 of 500 copies produced specially for subscribers and bound from the parts with stab-holes visible. Roth had originally reprinted thirteen bowdlerised episodes from Ulysses across eleven individual instalments in his Two Worlds Monthly serial, Vols. I-III (July 1926 - October 1927), with Vol. III.4, containing the fourteenth episode, and a preface by Roth both appearing here for the first time. Roth was known for publishing sexually explicit literature and other underground material, including a pirated edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover. His pirating of Ulysses "resulted in considerable public indignation and provoked the 'International Protest' signed by 167 artists and writers and printed in transition I" (Slocum & Cahoon p. 100). Joyce was able to obtain an injunction against Roth, but not until after Two Worlds Monthly had already ceased publication. An excellent copy, scarce in this condition.

        The World Crisis: 1911-1914

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1927. First edition, seventh printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed British first edition, seventh printing of the first volume of the Churchill's monumental history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. This volume covers the first four years Churchill spent as First Lord of the Admiralty, as well as the beginning of the war. Of The World Crisis, Frederick Woods wrote: "The volumes contain some of Churchill's finest writing, weaving the many threads together with majestic ease, describing the massive battles in terms which fitly combine relish of the literary challenge with an awareness of the sombre tragedy of the events." Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. Many consider the British edition aesthetically superior to the U.S., with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. Unfortunately, the original dust jackets are quite scarce and the smooth navy cloth of the British first editions proved quite susceptible to wear, the contents prone to spotting and toning. This copy approaches near fine condition in a very good plus dust jacket. This first edition, seventh printing was published in December 1927. Of note, the dust jacket spine, front panel, and front flap are identical to that of the first printing. The rear panel contains advertisements for the 1915 and 1916-1918 volumes, while the rear flap has 'Press Notices' for The World Crisis. The blue cloth binding is beautifully bright and clean with no scuffing and only trivial wear confined to spine ends and corners. The contents remain crisp and bright. We find no previous ownership marks. A few scattered spots are confined to the page edges, with no internal spotting observed. Differential toning to the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms that this copy has spent life jacketed. The dust jacket is highly complete, with only trivial loss to the spine ends and corners and a moderately toned spine. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.         Einsame Stimme: Ein Buch Gedichte [SIGNED]

Martin Wasservogel, Berlin 1927 - 1/20. Quarto. [6], 173, [3]pp. Uncut. Original full calf, with gold lettering and ruling on spine. Raised bands. Top edge gilt. Tissue-guarded original lithograph, signed in the plate by George Grasz. Limitation page signed by Max Herrmann. Collection of poems by the famous German Expressionist poet Max Herrmann. The frontispiece is an original lithograph by George Grosz, in which he details the lines, bumps, veins, and ruddiness of his friend Max Herrmann-Neisse's head and hands in this portrait, picturing him almost within arm's reach. Though Grosz was known for his harshly critical caricatures of corrupt figures, this portrait reveals a different side of the artist, capable of portraying his friend with sympathy. Grosz renders his friend's face with a contemplative expression that perhaps reflects Herrmann-Neisse's description of feeling "completely at home" in Grosz's studio. Grosz represents his friend's distinctive features - his hunched back and bald head - without the distortion so typical of the Expressionists. One of 20 copies numbered in Roman numerals, untrimmed, signed, and bound in full leather, of which this is No. IX (of a total edition of 900). Binding rubbed on raised bands and along edges. Text in German, gothic script. Binding in overall good- to good, interior in very good condition. About the author: Herrmann-Neisse, Max (1886-1941), was in reality Max Herrmann, to which name he added the name of his birthplace. He studied literature and history of art in Munich and Breslau, then turned to journalism and writing, first in his Silesian native city, and from 1917 in Berlin. He wrote mainly poetry and, influenced by Expressionism, contributed to "Die Aktion;" other periodicals include R. Schickele's "Die weißen Blätter." His poetry reflects his own sense of isolation, most poignantly felt after his emigration in 1933. He showed a preference for traditional forms and rhymed verse. He settled in London and, deprived of his German citizenship in 1938, wrote the defiant poem 'Ewige Heimat', for the homeland will live on 'in the song of its banished sons' ('in dem Lied verstoßner Söhne'). His poetry appeared in about 12 collections, including "Empörung," "Andacht," "Ewigkeit" (1918), appealing for the brotherhood of man, "Im Stern des Schmerzes" (1924), "Einsame Stimme" (1927), and "Um uns die Fremde" (1936). Other volumes include "Letzte Gedichte," ed. Leni Herrmann (posth. 1941), and select editions, "Erinnerung und Exil" (1946), "Im Fremden ungewollt zuhaus," ed. H. Hupka (1956), and "Lied der Einsamkeit." "Gedichte von 1914-1941," ed. F. Grieger (1961). Of his three plays, the comedy "Joseph der Sieger" (1919) achieved success. He also wrote two novels, "Cajetan Schaltermann" (1920) and "Der Flüchtling" (1921), and a number of stories which appeared in the collections "Hilflose Augen" (1920) and "Die Begegnung" (1925). Gesammelte Werke (9 vols.), ed. K. Völker, appeared 1986 ff. In 1927 Herrmann-Neiße received the Eichendorff Prize, in 1933 the Hauptmann Prize. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Left Bank and Other Stories [Scarce first printing of the Author's first book]

Harper & Brothers, 1927, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good, First edition. A Very Good copy of this collection of 22 Rhys short stories set in Paris during the 1920s (minor rubs to the spine ends and board corners, spine title label mildly soiled, foxing to the closed page block's upper edge, pages age toned as expected -- no dust jacket), being the first American edition utilizing the British sheets and a cancel title page. [Harper had the book's text printed in England and published the collection in both New York and London in 1927.] Ford Madox Ford, a mentor to Rhys, helped bring this collection to publication and requested permission to author the book's long Preface in which he notes the author's profound knowledge of the Left Bank in Paris. Of the collection, Ford stated "One likes, in short to be connected with something good, and Miss Rhys's work seems to me to be very good, so vivid, so extraordinarily distinguished by the rendering of passion, and so true, that I wish to be connected with it." A Very Good copy of this remarkably scarce first edition of the Dominican-born author's debut book. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

George Barbier Vingt-cinq costumes pour le théatre. Préface par Edmond Jaloux

Paris: Chez Camille Bloch & Jules Meynial, 1927. Quarto, portrait frontispiece, introduction followed by twenty-five pochoir colour plates, each signed by the artist and mounted on tinted grey Arches paper; fine in polished half-calf with black lettering. A remarkable collection of elegant theatrical costume designs signed by leading French Art Deco designer George Barbier (1882-1932) with a portrait frontispiece of Barbier by his friend and rival Charles Martin. Although primarily a book illustrator, Barbier applied his considerable skill to fabric design, posters, jewellery, wallpapers and commercial wrappings. He rose to prominence on the Parisian scene after his first exhibition of 1911 and worked under the creative direction of Diaghilev for the Ballets Russes, issuing a portfolio of designs for Nijinsky in 1913. The designs featured in Vingt-Cinq Costumes pour le theatre show Barbier at the height of his artistic career.Limited edition of 260 copies.

New York: Boni & Liveright, 1927. A scarce book about jazz age Los Angeles in the very scarce dust jacket. The jacket has some tape mends, remant of old piece of tape at bottom right corner of front cover, and some chipping especially at head and foot of spine. Lettering on spine still moderately bold and not affected by the chipping. The original price of $2.50 is intact on inside flap. Author biography on back cover of jacket with a photo of Ryan. The book itself is a nearly fresh copy with minor wear to the dark blue cloth at bottom edge. And the date Oct. 27, 1927 is stamped at bottom of the title page, possibly indicating this was a review copy with the date stamp indicating the date the book was received. This novel is one of the seminal portrayals in fiction of a Los Angeles (known also as City of the Angels) beginning to develop its true character as the city of the movie stars where evil temptation plays a role. At least that is what the dust jacket apparently means to imply. Even with its problems, the dust jacket is stilll quite bright and pleasing and a grade of good is probably conservative. . First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. Octavo, 296pp.

Photograph: Portrait of Mussolini [INSCRIBED BY BENITO MUSSOLINI TO LOUIS BARTHOU]

NP, Rome 1927 - Folio (13 x 9"). Original b/w photographic portrait of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. The photograph is tipped onto thick cardstock, which is inscribed to the then French Minister of Justice Louis Barthou: "A S. S. Louis Barthou, con cordiale deferente simpatia. Roma maggio 1927 - V" Mussolini (signed) (To his Excellency Louis Barthou, with friendly and respectful sympathy, Rome, May 1927 - Vth year of the fascist era). The actual photograph is an early official portrait of Benito Mussolini, who, following the March on Rome in October 1922, became Italy's youngest Prime Minister. The portrait measures 8 1/2 x 6 1/4" and depicts Mussolini dressed in civilian clothes with his head down, thus affecting an air of authoritarian severity. There is a cruel irony behind this exceptional document. Indeed, a few years later (February 9, 1934), Louis Barthou became the French Secretary of State, and as such, was assigned to welcome King Alexander I of Yugoslavia during his state visit to Marseille on October 9 of the same year. Within minutes of the King's arrival, both His Majesty and Barthou were assassinated by Velicko Kerin, a Bulgarian revolutionary with a handgun. One of the bullets struck Barthou in the arm, passing though and fatally severing an artery. He died of excessive blood loss less than an hour later. The assassination was planned in Rome by Ante Paveli , head of the Croatian Usta?e, a fascist movement that Mussolini had funded for years. Cardstock slightly age-toned, and partly creased at upper and lower right corners. Inscription in Italian. Cardstock in overall good, photograph in fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
