Autograph Letter, signed ("WJ Goggin") to Virginia historian, Henry S. Rorer

Vinton, VA, 9 march 1927. (WASHINGTON, BOOKER T) 12mo. 2-1/2 pp. in pencil, on two ruled sheets of writing paper. Slight toning, foolded for mailing, but overall quite good, with envelope, typed address to "Henri S. Rorer / Maury High School / Norfolk, / Virginia," in navy cloth folder . Remarkable and touching letter on Booker T. Washington's origins, from a man whose wife taught Washington to read: "Yours to hand and contents noted in reply will say that Booker was born the slave of James Burroughs and was about 10 years old when he was freed by the result of the war between the States. His mother was the slave of the same man her husband belonged to one of near neighbors by the name Ferguson but was not Booker's father Booker's father name was Ferguson (keep this to your self for he was not of the same color) My first wife daughter of the said James Burroughs learned Booker his abc and Book[er] always said he was Miss Ellen's negro. The husband of his mother was hired at Kasionva [?] salt works when freed, sent here for his family whitch consisted of one other son named John who was black and if living is connected with the scool at Tuskegee. Booker visited Va several years ago attended the Roanoke fair made fine speech from there he went to the place of his birth and some 1500 people met him there and heard him speak. Looked around the premises the only thing he could recognize was one rose bush in the yard everything had been changed. On that bush was one bud plucked it and went to the old man Burrough's grave layed it on the tombstone remarking at the time a good old man." Overall a nice example of the uncommon jacket.. (#130587). First edition. "One of the most distinctive volumes of American weird fiction, all of which were based on nightmares of the author, a classics teacher in the Baltimore area and a longtime sufferer from migraine ("sick headaches," as he called them) who killed himself after the death of his beloved wife. (He wrote an adoring memoir of her in his 1932 semi- autobiography, Matrimony). White wrote fiction in the summer to supplement his income, his most successful work being the solid but now rather dull works of historical fiction. Another motive, for the stories, was to get them out of his system. All of the stories in this collection have an unforced strangeness to them that is emblematic of their origins. The title story, anthologized twenty-three times according to Ashley and Contento, is fairly well known, but all of the others are worth reading as well. There is nothing else quite like this stuff. It is doubly unusual for its period, when American fiction underwent a divorce between the slicks and the pulps. White's nightmare stories were too grotesque for the slicks, and too "literary" for the pulps. Like the work of many another genius they turned out to be better suited for posterity than for his own time." Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction, p. 182. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 3-212. Schlobin, The Literature of Fantasy 1108. Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 462. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 3-255. Top edge stain a bit faded, a fine, bright, unopened copy in nearly. fine printed dust jacket with a bit of light foxing to spine panel. A. stunning copy of a book seldom found in jacket. (#115037). First edition. The author's third and last collection of weird fiction, this one dedicated to Maurice Baring. It includes "Tanhuser and the Gods," one of the finest humorous fantasies, "Winthrop's Adventure," "The Virgin of the Seven Daggers," and two others, as well as a long, interesting introduction on the sources for the stories. Lee's weird fiction earned the praise of Montague Summers, who equated her talent to that of M. R. James. "Lee's stories are really in a category by themselves. Intelligent, amusingly ironic, imaginative, original, they deserve more than the passing attention that they have attracted." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, pp. 256-57. "Marsyas in Flanders" is a "fine antiquarian tale but too early to have been directly influenced by M. R. James (it was written in 1900)." - Pardoe, The James Gang, p. 11. After careful research we believe this signature to be that of Irish born HARRY PLUNKET GREENE [1865-1936] a baritone singer renown for his formal concert and oratorio repertoire. 'The first eight and the last nine poems in this book are written after the manner of the Negro folk-songs known as Blues. The blues, unlike the Spirituals, have a strict poetic pattern: one long line repeated and a third line to rhyme with the first two. Sometimes the second line in repetition is slightly changed and sometimes, but very seldom, it is omitted. The mood of the blues is almost always despondency, but when they are sung people laugh.' Book - in Very Good paper covered boards with a black cloth spine and paper title label- slight darkening to the patterned paper cover boards, slight rubbing to the extreme corners and slight bumping to the extreme ends of the spine. Contents, some scattered browning and spotting as almost inevitable with this type of paper, light marking to the bottom of pages 34 & 35 NOT affecting the text, rough trimmed page edges which have been carelessly opened resulting in some slight loss to the bottom edge of the occasional page and page 89/90 missing a piece half an inch tall by one and a half inches wide from the bottom page edge, otherwise clean and tightly bound.         Nigger Heaven

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1927. Eleventh printing. A little light foxing in the text, else near fine, without dustwrapper. Bookplate of the facetious "Realm of Redonda," and its monarchs M.P. Shiel and John Gawsworth. Inscribed by Van Vechten to Shiel: "for M.P. Shiel whose books are like dreams of wonder, from Carl Van Vechten. July 4, 1927. New York." Redonda is a real (albeit small and uninhabited) island in the Caribbean which was allegedly claimed by Shiel's father upon the birth of his son, who eventually became an important fantasy and science-fiction writer. The "Realm" continues to be a somewhat elaborate running joke among artists to this day. A novel about a young couple in Harlem, set amid the cabarets and soirees of the Harlem Renaissance, which has been controversial since it was published because of its title. However, Van Vechten, who was white, was tireless in his support of African-American artists and writers even after the glamour of the Renaissance, which had drawn so many white intellectuals to Harlem, had waned. A nice association between two writers known for their attachment to whimsy and amusement. .

"This is a book written by a German after a war which brought defeat to his country and a great civilized people to a condition of dependence and subordination. The German Inflation can only be understood as part of the general history of the time. May we all learn from the past and emerge from the destructive era of reciprocal hostility into a new constructive period of international well-being." - from Foreward. "(Schacht) became one of the directors of the Reichsbank in 1916 and in 1923 became currency commissioner for the Reich. After his economic policies helped reduce German inflation and stabilize the German mark, Schacht was appointed president of the Reichsbank. He collaborated with other prominent figures in economics to form the Young Plan to modify the way that war reparations were paid after Germany's economy was destabilizing under the Dawes Plan. Though on March 7, 1930, six months after the beginning of the Great Depression, he stepped down from the position of Reichsbank Chairman, but returned on March 17, 1933 after Hitler's rise to power." - from wikipedia dot org.
