The World Crisis, 1916-1918, Volumes I & II, immaculate jacketed first editions in the very rare publisher's slipcase

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1927. 1st Edition. Hardcover. As new/Fine. We are pleased to offer Churchill collectors a spectacular, jacketed U.S. first edition set of the 1916-1918 volumes of Churchill's The World Crisis in the extravagantly rare original publisher's slipcase. The World Crisis is Winston Churchill's epic history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role. Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his six volume masterwork far exceeds this purpose. The U.S. is the true first edition, as U.S. Volume I publication preceded the British. Both the U.S. and British editions were originally published as six individual books between 1923 and 1931. Today, jacketed first editions are remarkably scarce - jacketed U.S. editions even more so. Perhaps most scarce is the original U.S. publisher's slipcase for the 1916-1918 first editions; Charles Scribner's Sons originally issued the two 1916-1918 volumes as a boxed set. The cardboard slipcase bears three pasted labels. A large, 8.25 x 5.75 inch label printed dark red on ivory on the right side of the slipcase bears an extensive blurb about Churchill and the work. A smaller label on the upper spine of the slipcase, likewise printed dark red on ivory, measures 4 x 3.25 inches and bears the title, author, and publisher. A bright orange label on the lower portion of the slipcase spine measuring 3.75 x 3 inches bears black ink print advertising Churchill's preceding World Crisis volumes. These original slipcases are almost never seen. We know of no other dealer who has offered a slipcased set. Here is an absolutely pristine, as new first edition set of the 1916-1918 volumes in fine dust jackets, housed in the original publisher's slipcase. The books themselves are as-new. The bindings are immaculate and improbably bright, with absolutely no wear or flaws to report. The contents are likewise pristine - unreservedly crisp, bright, and clean. The books are clearly unread and appear in virtually the same condition as when they were issued in 1927. We note only a tiny Boston bookseller sticker on the lower left ffep of each volume. The dust jackets are truly fine examples. Both are unclipped, retaining the "$10.00 Two Volumes" price on the front flap. Both jackets are entirely complete with no losses. Trivial flaws are limited to slight toning to the jacket spines, a hint of wear at the spine ends, and a faint one inch scratch to the Volume II lower spine (but no tear). We have fitted both dust jackets with removable, archival quality clear covers. The original publisher's slipcase has done its job protecting the spectacular books and dust jackets within, but has born some expected age and wear in the process. Nonetheless, the slipcase is entirely complete and still in one piece, with all three publisher's labels fully intact. Six of the eight seams are intact; only the short upper and lower horizontal seams at the back of the slipcase are split. There is wear at the opening edges, fraying at the split upper and lower rear seams, and light overall soiling. The slipcase is original and unrestored, but the seam splits are easily repaired with archival tape, at which point the slipcase will regain structural integrity. This beautiful slipcased set is a rare prize for collectors and about as early in the canon as a Churchill collector seeking jacketed first editions can reasonably expect to go.         THE CASE OF SACCO AND VANZETTI WITH A TYPED LETTER SIGNED

1927. FRANKFURTER, Felix. THE CASE OF SACCO AND VANZETTI. Boston: Little, Brown, And Company. Small 8vo., yellow-orange cloth, titles stamped in black; 118 pages. First Edition. With a full-page typed letter signed from Frankfurter, dated June 1, 1927 and on Harvard Law School stationery, laid in, to "My dear Newcomb." Frankfurter states he remembers Newcomb "vividly and with pleasure." He thanks Newcomb for thinking of him in connection with "Mr. Schultz's review" which is "stimulating and provocative." "After all, injustices due to man's passions, even on the part of those who wield the criminal machinery, is not too unknown in history to make us too surprised at its recurrence. What is important, is how the community responds to the disclosure of such injustices after reason has had time to catch up with unreason. The one heartening aspect about the whole business is utterances like Mr. Schultz's, written by lawyers in different parts of the country. With relatively rare exceptions, our own bar has been either silent or hostile. The guild spirit, if nothing else, has leaned too heavily upon them." Frankfurter asks Newcomb to send his regards to Mr. Schultz "for putting so effectively the ideas and impulses so inadequately expressed in my book." Letter is very nice with usual mailing folds but no tears. There are several pencil notations (by Newcomb?) on the front pastedown with some additonal pencil notations in the book. Book is very good with minor soiling covers (contents clean & tight). $750.00.

        Ethnography of Micronesia [Mikuroneshia minzokushi]

Oka shoin, Tokyo 1927 - Large octavo. 4, 24, 835, [1]pp. 3/4 leather over olive cloth, with gold lettering on spine and title laid on front cover. Japanese ethnographer Shizuo Matsuoka (1878-1936) was sent to Micronesia after Japan took control of the area by Mandate of the League of Nations in 1920. Matsuoka was concerned with all the aspects of the people's lives: history, geography, population, language, legends, archeological sites, ethnic groups, belief system, social organization, life cycle, clothing and ornaments, housing, food and diet, and weapons. He included sporadic comments on Micronesian customs from the Japanese point of view compared with that of the West. He states for instance, "Of all the islanders' customs which were unintelligible to Western eyes there are many that are quite understandable to us Japanese. Some customs categorized as superstitions are reasonable" (Ibid: 94). This work is profusely illustrated throughout with hundreds of b/w illustrations, photogravure plates, a music score and a folding map. Book rebacked with original title pasted on spine. Covers rubbed with some discoloration spots. Moderate and sporadic foxing throughout. Folding map split along inner margin, but present. Text in Japanese.         Transition Journal: Continuous Set of 27 Issues

Paris: Transition (1927-1938) - First Editions. Octavos. Set of twenty-six issues of the experimental literary journal Transition, founded by Eugene Jolas and Maria McDonald in 1927 and edited by Jolas with Elliot Paul, Robert Sage, and James Johnson Sweeney. Devoted to avant-garde poetry and prose of the early twentieth century, the publication featured contributions by visual artists, critics, writers, and political activists and was primarily distributed through Shakespeare and Company. Transition quickly became the most sought after literary and artistic journal of the inter-war period, and taken together, the journal presents a nearly definitive understanding of Surrealism, through the poetry, prose, and artistic production of its contributors. Issues 1 through 12 are smaller volumes without cover illustrations; Issues 14 through 27 assume a larger size, and feature artist designed covers. Of particular interest is issue 26, with a cover by Marcel Duchamp that depicts at comb floating in midair. Along the spine of the comb, Duchamp has written "3 ou 4 Gouttes de Hauteur n'ont rien a faire avec la sauvagerie," or "3 or 4 drops of haughtiness have nothing to do with savagery." This set includes issues 1 through 27, published between 1927 and 1938. With work by Gertrude Stein, William Carlos Williams, Kay Boyle, James Joyce, Kurt Schwitters, Hugo Ball, Hans Arp, Franz Kafka, Dylan Thomas, Aragon, and Fernand Léger, Pablo Picasso, Yves Tanguy, Joan Miró, and Hans Arp, among many other seminal figures of modern art and literature. Inexpensively produced journal, with noticeable defects in the entire collection; issue 3 is missing its cover, though all other issues are intact. Collection uniformly good to very good.         Transition Journal: Continuous Set of 27 Issues

Paris: Transition, (1927-1938). Uniformly very good condition.. First Editions.
