HISTORY OF THE CHISUM WAR; OR, LIFE OF IKE FRIDGE, STIRRING EVENTS OF COWBOY LIFE ON THE FRONTIER AS TOLD TO JODIE D. SMITH, ELECTRA, TEXAS.

Smith, [1927]., 1927. First edition. 8vo. Pictorial wrappers, [i-ii, ii blank], 1-70 pp. [71, illus]. 22 x 15cm., frontis., illustrated. J. Frank Dobie says it best,"Ike Fridge's pamphlet story of his ridings for John Chisum..chief provider of cattle for Billy the Kid to steal...has more of the juice of reality in it and, therefore, more of literary value than some of James Fenimore Cooper's novels, and than some of James Russell Lowell's odes...as compact as jerked beef and as laconic as conversation in alkali dust." This copy is inscribed to Ace Reid, Sr., father of Ace Reid, the cartoonist of Cowpokes fame, attesting that Reid "slept under the wagon and the stars with me (Fridge) in 1918" and signed by Ike Fridge and Jodie D. Smith. Also, handwritten in ink on the last blank page is Ace Reis's Sr.'s account of an experience his father had on the trail with John Chisum in the 1880's. Moderate wear to the spine ends, a small corner crease to bottom of front cover, else a very good and sound copy of this rare cowboy memoir. Housed in a clamshell case with titles on the spine.

No. 27 Squadron in India and on the North-west Frontier - Miranshah, Karachi, Risalpur, &c.

India: 1927-30 - Landscape quarto (298 × 230 mm). Contemporary cord-backed brown leather-textured paper covered boards. Somewhat worn externally, boards through at the edges, cord tie replaced with string, but internally clean and sound, leaves sunned at the margins, a few corner-mounts missing, but the prints themselves in excellent condition, overall very good. 48 original photographs (152 × 208 mm) corner-mounted both sides of 24 card leaves, tissue guards between the leaves. An unusual, and highly interesting album of high-quality photographs documenting the services of 27 Squadron RAF on North-west Frontier during the last years of the 1920s. The album contains numerous sharp and well-composed air-to-air images of the unit's Airco DH-9As and Westland Wapitiis over the spectacular frontier scenery around their main base of Miranshah - "My machine flying at Karachi", "Flying over the snow clad mountains over Rasmak", "Wapiti dropping food to Lhadu Column November 1929", "Bombing on the Frontier during operations in India during Summer 1930" - together with aerial views of the bases, camps, and forts of the region; formal and informal group portraits; a group of three aerial views of the four Supermarine Southampton II flying-boats, which constituted the RAF Far Eastern Flight, taken at Karachi on their way to Singapore from England; and a shot of Baron Koenig-Warthausen and his Klemm L.20B machine "Kamerad" at Karachi during his solo flight around the world. It is intriguing that the album covers the period when T.E. Lawrence had succeeded in getting himself posted to the frontier as a humble clerk, being stationed at Karachi and at Miranshah. Sadly, despite the closest possible scrutiny, it does not appear that Shaw/Lawrence features in any of the images. Bestowal document for the Imperial Service Medal, dated in 1965,l made out to William Arthur Tibbs loosely inserted, who is perhaps the "me" in two photographs taken in the Political Agent's garden at Miranshah.

        Pencil and crayon caricature.

Paris: , c.1927. Large pencil drawing with crayon shading, neatly trimmed by the artist and mounted on a sheet of red cartridge paper (490 × 310 mm). Signed lower right. Some surface soiling, a scatter of foxing, a few creases, but overall very good. Strikingly kooky image of La Baker by the man dubbed by Churchill "the best caricaturist in France". An image almost certainly from around 1927, when Baker's success at the Follies-Bergère had made her the highest paid entertainer in Europe, and Hemingway was driven to describe her as "the most sensational woman anybody ever saw, or ever will". Shortly after this Baker undertook a world tour, dropping the more sensational, and excessively "primitive" aspects of her act, consciously reconstructing herself as an artist "worthy of Paris". Cabrol began working in Paris as a photographic retoucher at the studios of the official parliamentary photographer. In 1922 his first exhibition - Masques et sourires - a collection of 110 drawings and cartoons, was opened by the minister of education, and met with great success leading to a flood of commissions from publications at home - Le Petit Parisien, le Matin, l'Intransigeant - and abroad - le New York Times, Life, The Graphic, The Sketch, Berliner Illustriete, and Le Soir de Bruxelles. In 1926 he began working exclusively for l'Humanité, but refused the join the Communist Party despite the efforts of his friend Paul Vaillant-Couturier , the editor, to persuade him, Shortly after Vaillant-Couturier's death in 1937, Cabrol resigned from the paper and began to work for le Canard enchaîné. Following the occupation, Cabrol found himself a wanted man because of his famously vicious caricatures of Hitler, which had drawn Churchill's admiration, and joined the resistance in Rignac, Aveyron. After liberation he escaped arrest by the communists, and eventually returned to work for le Canard, refusing any connection with l'Humanité. He died in 1955.

        ORIGINAL ART: TWINKIE TOWN TALES

      - HENDERSON,ARTHUR. ORIGINAL ART: TWINKIE TOWN TALES (vol. 2). This is a large fabulous fairy watercolor, ink and tempera by Henderson that appears on page [20] of Twinkie Town Tales Book No. 2 by Carlyle Emery, published in St. Louis by Hamilton Brown Co. 1927. The image measures 15" wide x 20" matted and framed to 24 x 30" and is in fine condition. Captioned in the book "Well bless my bow and arrow too, Said Thinker-Tad, 'Can that be you?'" Depicted is one of the cherubic elves called Twinkies, sitting on a cherry hanging from a cherry tree. He's talking to another Twinkie on the ground and there is a castle in the background with a bird in the foreground. The entire surface of the paper is covered with vibrant colors and the image is absolutely irresistable. The image appears greatly reduced in the book.

        THE EXHILE, Vols 1-4

Darantiere (France); Pascal Covici (USA); Covici-Friede (USA) 1927 - Published in France and America, 1927-28 First Editions. 4 volumes, octavo. Original red or orange wrappers printed in black. Spines a little creased and faded, some light rubbing to extremities and the occasional mark; vol 4 has two small ink stains on the top edge, one extending 5mm into rear wrapper, and a small chip to top outer corner of front wrapper. Internally very fresh and clean, an excellent set overall. Preserved in a black custom drop-back box. A frequent contributor to the literary reviews of his expatriate friends, in 1927 Pound achieved a personal ambition by launching his own magazine. The Exhile published work by many of the leading Modernist writers, including Hemingway, Yeats and William Carlos Williams. The first issue of 500 copies (including 300 for America) was produced in Dijon by Darantiere (printers of Ulysses and Hemingways's first book Three Stories and Ten Poems), however problems with distribution led Pound to move production to the US with the publishers Pascal Covici (later Covici-Friede). Perhaps having more ideals than money behind it, The Exhile closed in 1928 after only four issues. A scarce set. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Florida Letters

Florida, New York. 1927. A collection of 113 letters sent to Shelter Island, New York native, Glorian Duvall while she was attending finishing school at the Lasell Seminary School in Newton, Massachusetts from her parents who were spending the winter months of 1927 in Florida. All letters are very good or better with modest age-toning and tears from opening. Between the months of January and April of 1927 Glorian Duvall received a series of 113 letters from her parents, sent nearly every day while they were on a trip to Florida starting on the train from New York in order to escape the northern winter. Mr. Duvall worked in insurance, one letter explains to Glorian how he was working with a couple to help them receive money after a fire. They stayed at the Kenwood in Saint Augustine, and at the Seaside Inn in Daytona Beach, often sending their letters written on hotel stationary, as well as numerous Florida-themed postcards and photographs with scenes of sunsets, people fishing, and various sights of the Sunshine State. The postcards depict a variety of Florida landmarks including The Ponce de Leon Hotel, Hemming Park in Jacksonville, sunsets with palm trees, St. Augustine Links, and the Alcazar Hotel. The letters tell of their fun in Florida for "the season" where they went on outings throughout the area, competed in Charleston dance competitions, and enjoyed the weather. In a letter dated January 25, 1927, which includes a feather paper clipped to it, her mother writes, "If you want a little taste of South Beach just put your tongue on these feathers... and you will get a tang of sea spray dashing up there so beautifully." Another letter from her father says, "Mamma and I are planning to take a little trip out to the central part of the state near Eustis, to a place called 'Howie in the Hills.' It is said to be the highest part of Florida and a wonderful section for orange groves."In February they went to Daytona Beach before heading back to St. Augustine for the duration of their stay. A postcard dated February 16, 1927 reads, "here we are at the Seaside Inn Daytona Beach. It is in a very pleasant location for the hotel faces right on the ocean. We have a front room so we will see the moonlight on the ocean from our room." Her father writes that he "took a bath in the ocean and enjoyed it very much." While they were away they had to persuade their 17-year-old daughter from getting engaged. Her mother writes, "it is perfectly beautiful, this young love and I know the ecstasy which is thrilling you as you think of yourself the beloved of some sweet fine boy, but...it is well to know many men before making a selection for life." An extensive account of a seemingly well-to-do New York couple's trip to Florida in the late 1920s as seen by their correspondence to their teenage daughter. .

LA MAISON DES AIEULES suivie de MADEMOISELLE ANNA, TRES HUMBLE POUPÉE. [i.e., HOUSE OF GRANDMOTHERS followed by MISS ANNA, A VERY HUMBLE DOLL]

Paris: Henri Floury, 1927. No. 270 OF 274 COPIES on vélin d'Arches (of a total edition of 302) n. Hardcover. 245 x 192 mm (9 1/2 x 7 1/2"). 84, [2], pp., [1] leaf (colophon). No. 270 OF 274 COPIES on vélin d'Arches (of a total edition of 302). Publisher's color illustrated wrappers, original glassine. With 76 illustrations including wrapper image by André Hellé, hand colored in gouache via pochoir stenciling by J. Saudé. Half-inch joint split at spine head and tail, mild edgewear, glassine with many small chips to spine and edges, but AN EXTREMELY APPEALING COPY, the fragile book quite solid, and internally quite clean, fresh, and bright, with very rich coloring. Illustrated with great charm in vivid colors, this volume is comprised of two Loti stories that harken back to his childhood in the city of Saint Pierre on Oléron, an island off France's Atlantic coast. "House of Grandmothers" and "Miss Anna, A Very Humble Doll" are memoirs intended for children of all ages. "Pierre Loti" is the pseudonym for Julien Viaud (1850-1923), who wrote popular novels at the same time that he was a career officer in the French navy. He was known for incorporating material from his life and details from the exotic places he visited to give his novels deep levels of emotion and authenticity. Inspired by Monet, he endeavored to write as the Impressionists painted. Contemporary critic Edmund Gosse said that "at his best Pierre Loti was unquestionably the finest descriptive writer of the day. In the delicate exactitude with which he reproduced the impression given to his own alert nerves by unfamiliar forms, colors, sounds and perfumes, he was without a rival. But he was not satisfied with this exterior charm; he desired to blend with it a moral sensibility of the extremest refinement, at once sensual and ethereal." Artist André Hellé produced humorous illustrations for all the leading French periodicals during the first half of the 20th century. Though famed as a theater set designer, he illustrated many books, most of which, as here, were inspired by childhood. This endearing but fragile book has, not surprisingly, become quite rare in the marketplace, and it is remarkably so in the original glassine.
