Austen's most famous novel is Pride and Prejudice, the timeless tail of Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy who overcome their social boundaries and personal grievances to pursue their love for one another. This set also includes Austen's lesser known works, the shortepistolary novel Lady Susan and the abandoned novel The Watsons.       New York: Boni & Liveright, 1927. A scarce book about jazz age Los Angeles in the very scarce dust jacket. The jacket has some tape mends, remant of old piece of tape at bottom right corner of front cover, and some chipping especially at head and foot of spine. Lettering on spine still moderately bold and not affected by the chipping. The original price of $2.50 is intact on inside flap. Author biography on back cover of jacket with a photo of Ryan. The book itself is a nearly fresh copy with minor wear to the dark blue cloth at bottom edge. And the date Oct. 27, 1927 is stamped at bottom of the title page, possibly indicating this was a review copy with the date stamp indicating the date the book was received. This novel is one of the seminal portrayals in fiction of a Los Angeles (known also as City of the Angels) beginning to develop its true character as the city of the movie stars where evil temptation plays a role. At least that is what the dust jacket apparently means to imply. Even with its problems, the dust jacket is stilll quite bright and pleasing and a grade of good is probably conservative. . First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Good. Octavo, 296pp.

Photograph: Portrait of Mussolini [INSCRIBED BY BENITO MUSSOLINI TO LOUIS BARTHOU]

NP, Rome 1927 - Folio (13 x 9"). Original b/w photographic portrait of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. The photograph is tipped onto thick cardstock, which is inscribed to the then French Minister of Justice Louis Barthou: "A S. S. Louis Barthou, con cordiale deferente simpatia. Roma maggio 1927 - V" Mussolini (signed) (To his Excellency Louis Barthou, with friendly and respectful sympathy, Rome, May 1927 - Vth year of the fascist era). The actual photograph is an early official portrait of Benito Mussolini, who, following the March on Rome in October 1922, became Italy's youngest Prime Minister. The portrait measures 8 1/2 x 6 1/4" and depicts Mussolini dressed in civilian clothes with his head down, thus affecting an air of authoritarian severity. There is a cruel irony behind this exceptional document. Indeed, a few years later (February 9, 1934), Louis Barthou became the French Secretary of State, and as such, was assigned to welcome King Alexander I of Yugoslavia during his state visit to Marseille on October 9 of the same year. Within minutes of the King's arrival, both His Majesty and Barthou were assassinated by Velicko Kerin, a Bulgarian revolutionary with a handgun. One of the bullets struck Barthou in the arm, passing though and fatally severing an artery. He died of excessive blood loss less than an hour later. The assassination was planned in Rome by Ante Paveli , head of the Croatian Usta?e, a fascist movement that Mussolini had funded for years. Cardstock slightly age-toned, and partly creased at upper and lower right corners. Inscription in Italian. Cardstock in overall good, photograph in fine condition.         A Quantum Theory of the Scattering of X-rays by Light Elements" in Physical Review 21, May 1923, pp 483-502

FIRST EDITION OF ARTHUR COMPTON'S NOBEL PRIZE WINNING PAPER ON THE 'COMPTON EFFECT,' THE SCATTERING OF HIGH-ENERGY PHOTONS BY ELECTRONS. The landmark "discovery of the Compton effect served as the technical catalyst for the acceptance and rapid development of quantum mechanics in the 1920s and 1930s" (Todd, Scientists in Space and Astronomy, 88). From this distance, "it is difficult for us today to understand that Compton's explanation of X-ray scattering was regarded as revolutionary. Physicists until then had learned that electromagnetic radiation, depending on the process studied, had to be described as consisting of EITHER waves OR energy quanta but now had to accept that BOTH the wave AND the particle property were needed" (Brandt, The Harvest of the Century, 130). "Compton carried out relativistic calculations (assuming detailed conservation of energy and momentum on a quantum-by-quantum basis) that predicted that energetic X-ray or gamma-ray quanta, when scattered off of electrons, would lose a certain amount of energy" Peacock, The Quantum Revolution, 43). "His experiments revealed that there definitely was a measurable shift of X-ray (photon) wavelength with scattering angle - a phenomenon now called the 'Compton effect'" (Todd). "The Compton effect is the inelastic scattering of a photon when it collides with an electron that results in a decrease in energy (increase in wavelength). Part of the energy is transferred to the electron, which recoils and is ejected from its atom (which becomes ionized), and the rest of the energy is taken by the scattered, "degraded" photon. The classical wave theory of light cannot explain the shift in wavelength (and loss of energy) observed in the Compton effect, and as a result, Compton's experiment convinced most physicists that light does in this case behave as a stream of particles whose energy is proportional to its frequency" (The Wenner Collection). Compton's paper verified Planck's quantum postulate AND "confirmed Einstein'a view that the quantum of light interacted like a discrete particle" (Peacock). Compton was awarded the 1927 Nobel Prize in Physics. CONDITION & DETAILS: Full volume. Lancaster: American Physical Society. 4to (10.75 x 8 inches; 268 x 200mm). Entire volume, continuously paginated pp. 1-736. Compton's paper: pp. 483-502. Ex-libris with no markings at the spine whatsoever. There are two stamps of the blank front fly leaf and an envelope on the front paste down. Minor. Illustration: In-text figures throughout. Exterior: Bound in blue cloth with a gilt-lettered spine; very slight rubbing at the edges. Tightly and solidly bound. The interior is bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition.

Lauriat Company, 1927-1929. First American edition, first impression. Two octavo volumes in four (9 5/8 x 7 1/8 inches; 245 x 180 mm.).Volume One: xiv, 266; [iv], 267-518 pp. With 126 illustrations and 17 plans.Volume Two: xv, [i, blank], 212; [iv], 213-443, [1 blank] pp. With 174 illustrations and 17 plans.Publishers blue cloth, spines lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, map endpapers. Ink signature on front flyleaf of volume 1, part 1. A few small tape repairs to some folding maps otherwise a near fine set. Complete with the original prospectus's for both volumes."Here is a real book of the sea, another welcome break in the hasty, monotonous, superficial collections that have made their appearance to exploit the thirst for genuine sea literature created mainly by the appearance of Mr. Lubbock's world- famous books on Clippers and Frigates, narratives that have stirred the emotions and thoughts of readers even far removed from actual seafaring. This book, which will be published in two volumes, will complete the series which commenced with the China Clippers and deals, in particular, with those ships and trades which were not included in the previous volumes. The book was planned to take in every Sailing Ship of any note from the year of the opening of the Suez Canal to the present day, but in practice vessels of a very much earlier date have often been included, especially when sketching the early history of shipping firms. Volume I. is divided into Three Parts. The first deals with the Life and Personnel in Sail, with a chapter on the History of Cape Horn. Part II. is devoted to the vessels in the big Sailing Ship Trades, such as the Jute Clippers and Grain Carriers. Part III. is devoted entirely to the Small Fry -- Swansea Copper-ore-men, Clipper Barques in the South and West African Trades, Intercolonial and South Sea Traders, Fruit Schooners and Fish Carriers. The illustrations and plans, which are very numerous, have been carefully selected and are intended to provide a pictorial record of the last seventy years of the now almost extinct Windjammer. Never before have so many particulars of voyages, incidents and names been included in one boon. It is a simple seamanlike narrative, told in Mr. Lubbock's inimitable style beloved by seafarers and relished by those who love the sea and its traditions. It is a book you will be really proud to possess -- and guard! (Publisher's prospectus for volume 1).Volume two deals with the Deep-Water Sailing Ships, 1888-1928. "In this, the second volume, the great steel sailing ships of the last thirty years are described in detail. Although steel plates and wire rigging were a big contrast to oak ribs, pine planking and tarred hemp rigging, these pages show that life at sea aboard the last of the windjammers was very little different from that of our great-grandfathers in the days of Nelson… There are a number of appendices, giving hull measurements, rigging plans, and other statistics… The index of ships, owners and captains is most complete. The end-pieces take the form of a conventionalized chart and the binding is of the same quality that gave Volume One such handsome appearance." (Publisher's prospectus for volume 2).
