Manuscrit. Bon. Now We Are Six.

London: Methuen & Co., Ltd.,, 1927. With Decorations by Ernest H. Shepard. Octavo. Original full vellum with yapp edges, gilt lettered front cover, untrimmed. Housed in a custom made blue cloth chemise and quarter blue morocco slipcase. Illustrated throughout by Ernest H. Shepard. Slipcase a little used. An exemplary copy, largely unopened. First and limited edition, number 4 of 20 large-paper copies printed on Japanese vellum and signed by the author and illustrator; the most luxurious and exclusive format in which Milne's Pooh books were issued. Following the success of When We Were Very Young Milne began planning a second book of poetry for children. In a January 1926 letter to his brother Ken he included it as number one in a list of "things which ought to be done": "A book of verses (about 15 done to date) to appear in 1927 or 1928" (Thwaite p. 293). By the time that Winnie-the-Pooh was published in late 1926 half the poems for this third book were already complete. Published on 13 October 1927, it took only two months for Now We Are Six to eclipse the sales records of the previous two books. Full of Milne's charming verse, this collection is also notable for including Shepard's timeless illustrations from the world of Pooh and Piglet.

        THE BELLAMY TRIAL.

Garden City: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1927. - First edition. Former owner's name else very good in dust jacket with light professional restoration to spine ends and extremities. This novel is based upon the famous Hall-Mills case, and "unfolds the totally absorbing story of the misalliances and crossed lives of two couples from the gentry of upstate New York; one wife has been murdered, and the husband and the other wife are the accused," so say 20th Century Crime & Mystery Writers. The Bellamy Trail was a pioneering work which defined the genre of the court-room mystery drama. The author's fame is based largely on this book. Haycraft/Queen Cornerstone title.         A Diet Rich in Liver in the Treatment of Pernicious Anemia. Study of one Hundred and Five Cases.

Chicago, American Medical Association, 1927. 8vo. Offprint in the original printed wrappers. A fine and clean copy. 25 pp.. First printing, in the scarce offprint, of Minot and Murphy's paper, published the year after their landmark Nobel Prize winning 1926-paper, in which they elaborate on their 1926-study and record further observations. Minot and Murphy shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1934 with George Whipple "for their discoveries concerning liver therapy in cases of anaemia". "The brilliant discovery by Minot and Murphy in 1926, demonstrating the dramatic effectiveness of liver preparations in pernicious anemia, forms one of the landmarks in the history of therapeutics." (Satoskar, Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapeutics)."Prompted by pathologist George Whipple's research on the feeding of liver to anemic dogs, Minot and Murphy fed liver to their patients. In a now famous 1926 paper [the present], they announced its miraculous benefits for forty-five otherwise doomed souls" (Wailoo, Drawing Blood: technology and Disease Identity in Twentieth-Century America). Up until the 1920'ies, pernicious anemia (also known as "blood thinning" disease) was a fatal disease, for which there was no cure. People who developed pernicious anemia - characterized by dangerously low counts of red blood cells - were left exhausted, hospitalized, and without the hope of being cured. "Minot's work and that of numerous pupils during the decade after 1926 initiated a new era in clinical hematology by replacing the largely morphologic studies of the blood and of the blood-forming and blood-destroying organs with dynamic measurements of their functions." (DSB).In the early 1920s, most doctors believed that pernicious anemia was caused by a toxic substance in the body, and they prescribed doses of arsenic, transfusions, or removal of the spleen as treatments. But after these remedies were administered, patients had relapses, and death was inevitable. Across the world, 6,000 lives a year were lost to the scourge of pernicious anemia."In 1923, Minot met William P. Murphy, who had graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1922 and who was to become an assistant instructor at Harvard Medical School in 1924. In their investigations to find a cure for pernicious anemia, Minot believed that research by George Whipple, a researcher whom he had known while both were at Johns Hopkins Hospital, was particularly significant. Whipple had completed experiments in which he bled dogs to make them anemic. Then he determined which foods restored their red blood cells. His results showed that red meat and certain vegetables were effective treatments, but liver was the best treatment. Minot wondered if Whipple's findings with dogs could be duplicated in humans. He and Murphy were determined to try it, and proceeded to do so with their private patients. Observing an increase in the patients' red blood cell counts, they thought they were on the right track, and decided to try the experiment with hospitalized patients which eventually led to their landmark discovery." (The Harward University Gazette, 1998).After Minot and Murphy's verification of Whipple's results in 1926, pernicious anemia victims ate or drank at least one-half pound of raw liver, or drank raw liver juice, every day. This continued for several years, until a concentrate of liver juice became available. The active ingredient in liver remained unknown until 1948, when it was isolated by chemists Karl A. Folkers.Garrison & Morton: 3140

        Faust.

London: George G. Harrap & Company Ltd,, 1927. From the German by John Fluster. Quarto (252 × 193 mm). Later black crushed morocco by Bayntun-Riviere, raised bands with three small circle tools gilt, title gilt direct to second and fourth compartments, the others with arabesque cornerpieces within a single fillet panel gilt, attractive panelling to the boards incorporating the same arabesque corner-tools, bead and chain gilt edge-roll, all edges gilt, broad turn-ins with elaborate gilt dentelles, grey Cockerell marbled endpapers. Tissue-guarded coloured frontispiece and 7 other similar plates, 14 monochrome plates, one of them double-page, full-page illustrations from a pen and ink drawings to recto of the limitation leaf and to last leaf, similar decorative title-page, and head- and tailpieces throughout, original pictorial endpapers bound in at the rear. Binding very good indeed, tan-burn from the turn-ins, light toning to the text, pale pinkish off-setting from the photo-reproduced monochrome plates, but overall an excellent copy. First Clarke-illustrated edition, this from the signed limited edition of 2,000 copies divided between the US and UK, this copy number 838 of the 1,000 copies for issue in the UK. The publishers were dubious about Clarke's efforts, thinking them, as he recalled, "full of steaming horrors", but Dorothy Richardson, pioneering modernist and feminist, writing in The Studio understood; "There is from first to last in these pictures no sunlight, but rather light filtered, coming as through a glass darkly. And it is this quality of filtered light, helping to make him so interesting a commentator on Goethe's tale, that is one of the distinctive charms of Mr. Clarke's work. It is not for nothing that he is by choice a designer of storied windows richly dight, and in the case of these Faust pictures, the dimmed light is truly religious, binding together as in a single medium this wealth of fantastic invention and remaining in the mind until the detail is lost in the whole". Handsomely-bound copy of the last book illustrated by Clarke, and perhaps his masterpiece in the form.

        BLENDED WORLDS .

Miami, Arizona: Southern Arizona Publishing Co., 1927 - Octavo, pp. [1-6] [1-3] 4-243 [244-250] [note: first two and last three leaves are blanks], original blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold. First edition. Limited to 100 copies numbered and signed by Van Dyke, plus some out-of-series copies, this being one of the latter. Eccentric occult science fiction novel, sequel to THE FLASH, also privately printed by the author in an edition of 100 copies in Miami, Arizona, in 1927. THE FLASH and its sequel first appeared as serials in the Miami, Arizona, DAILY SILVER BELT. This is definitely not your usual Victorian, talking-heads-in-flowing-white-robes kind of occult romance; but rather a wild and wooly tale in the American tradition of such works as RONDAH, REVI-LONA, and DR. ZELL AND THE PRINCESS CHARLOTTE. It's a red- blooded, action-packed adventure, blending backdrops of the Wild West and the Roaring Twenties, complete with bootleggers, prize fighters, romantic passion, grizzled prospectors, super science and a bizarre 25-page journey through an underworld cavern in which we learn about Glowhumes, unsaturated Electrohumes, the Ancient Order of Wasted Propaganda, radicals and coefficients, the Interrogator and the Disseminator, and the progressive concentration of "sparkles" as one ascends the food chain. Taken together, they form the wacky, sui generis occultism that animates this story philosophically. Here is a quest whose hunted treasure turns out to be multilayered both figuratively and literally. It follows the adventures of Charlie, Mary and Frank (brother, sister, friend) in search of unspecified treasure at the foot of Sleeping Beauty, seen in a vision in Chicago, drawing them across the country in a covered wagon until they arrive in Arizona at a mountainous formation that looks like a giant Sleeping Beauty. Charlie is given to trances and astral travel, and early on in the story fails to return from one. It is his corpse, strapped to a rubber air mattress gliding sideways across a raging river that initiates the trip to the underworld. Mary is beautiful, quick, ethereal and extremely devoted to Charlie. Frank is brawny, slow, down-to-earth and extremely devoted to Mary. The story in large part is about how Mary becomes more earthy (and humble) and Frank more spiritual (and confident) until they pass through all the inner and outer obstacles keeping them apart as a romantic couple. Along the way, Frank becomes a champion prize fighter under the management of Dorothy, a feisty and fetching schoolteacher who gets off a bus to help Frank after the storm that separates him from Mary, but who then gets a taste of the fast life on Frank's winnings and finds another lover. Mary becomes a celebrated mind- reader, fortuneteller and faith-healer under the cynical management of her Uncle Joseph, a cagey prospector fond of doing vocal impressions. Van Dyke lacks the polish of the professional writer and is sometimes awkward, abrupt or confusing; but he tells a complex yet fast-moving story and tells it with suspense, psychological credibility, thematic depth, and comedy (sometimes unintentional). Most impressive is how he combines customarily opposite qualities, writing convincingly of the city and the desert, the boxing ring and a magical cavern, crooks and angels, thus making his book itself an intriguing example of blended worlds. A significant book that should be better known. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Reginald (1979; 1992) or Day (1963). Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, p. 110. Cloth rubbed at edges, several small stains, two gatherings slightly proud, a very good copy. Quite uncommon. (#149503) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Pictures of Horses and English Life. With an Appreciation by Lionel Lindsay

London: Eyre and Spottiswoode, 1927. First Edition, one of 250 signed copies. With 28 tipped-in color plates and numerous black and white illustrations. 1 vols. Folio. Original full vellum, gilt, t.e.g., others uncut. Munnings, A.J. First Edition, one of 250 signed copies. With 28 tipped-in color plates and numerous black and white illustrations. 1 vols. Folio. A superb, sumptuous volume, covering the wide range of Munnings's work, from his elaborate oils to a final bit of verse illustrated by amusing sketches; included are some of the colorful studies of gypsy life which brought him his first, early renown. A.J. Munnings (1878-1959) spent his early years in rural Suffolk, worked for a firm of Norwich lithographers and studied at the Norwich School of Art. At the age of twenty he lost the sight of his right eye in an accident, a misfortune that did not stop him from having a long, celebrated and profitable painting career. A lover of the countryside, he was particularly fond of horses, and through his depictions of hunting and racing scenes became the foremost sporting artist of his time and one of the best painters of horses in the history of art. Munnings was not a studio artist--he much preferred setting up his easel out of doors, which, added to his fine draftsmanship, helped keep his work fresh and spontaneous. Munnings was elected to the Royal Academy in 1925, became its president in 1944, received a knighthood and numerous honors. In the words of fellow artist Gerald Kelly, "By his gay exuberance and love of life, [he] attracted friends throughout his long life, although they were exasperated by his headstrong follies and unreasonable temper." This lavish book is both the rich reflection of an artist who was always larger than life, and a testimony to his imperishable achievement. A MONUMENTAL RECORD OF ONE OF THE GREATEST ENGLISH SPORTING ARTISTS.

Autograph Quotation signed ("M.A. Foroughi"). In French.

[Paris]., September 1927. - Folio. 1 page. On uncut wove paper, bearing the Schoellers-Parole blind embossed seal, margins uncut. The original autograph contribution of Mohammed-Ali Foroughi to the Committee of the World League for Peace (Ligue Mondiale pour la Paix), a remarkable organization formed in 1925 with close ties to the League of Nations. The Committee itself was composed of such notaries as Queen Elizabeth of Belgium, King Carol II of Romania, John D Rockefeller, Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein, who personally gathered the present manuscripts over the course of seven years (1925-32). Among the public figures who contributed to the project were dignitaries from the newly-created League of Nations' member states. "Peace will reign over the world and a true League of Nations will exist on the day when we will have truly understood that men, in order to be true men, must, contrary to the beast, band together instead of tearing each other apart, and that in the struggle for life they must fight, not the one against the other, but all against nature, or rather against our ignorance of the physical and moral laws of nature. This thought has been admirably expressed by one of our most illustrious philosophical poets, Djelaladdine, nearly 700 years ago in a couplet which I should like to quote verbatim: 'The wolves and the dogs are disunited, / The true men are always in perfect accord'. [Signed] M. A. Foroughi, Premier Delegate of Persia to the League of Nations". Foroughi became Director of the Tehran School of Political Science in 1907. He was instrumental in the bringing to power of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi after Reza Shah was forced to abdicate in 1941 and subsequently became Ambassador of Iran to the United States. Pax Mundi.         Poetical Works (With notes by Francis T. Palgave)

London: Macmillan & Co., 1927. Very good antiquarian condition. Small 8vo. 146 x 92 mm. xi, [i], 284 pp. Fine turquoise crushed morocco, intricately gilt, by Ramage of London (their stamp on front turn-in): covers with multiple gilt rolls bordering a rich and densely gilt plaitwork frame enclosing an open panel with petite, gilt-tooled cornerpieces; raised bands, spine compartments reiterating the frame's design, turn-ins decorated with decorative rolls and small tools, ivory moire silk endleaves, all edges gilt. Title page with engraved vignette. First preliminary blank with neat inked inscription, "To Louise / all best love / from A. / 1929." The faintest hint of a scratch on one cover, spine probably darker than the boards, the text clean and fresh, and the elaborately decorated binding lustrous and virtually unworn. The sparkling Ramage binding on this copy of Keats' "Poetical Works" lends support to the author's immortal aphorism: "a thing of beauty is a joy forever." Our collection of the poems was compiled by Francis Turner Palgrave (1824-1897), British critic, poet, and early friend of Tennyson. Palgrave is best remembered as the anthologist of "The Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language" (1861). The binding could hardly be prettier. We have seen a virtually identical Ramage binding formerly in the possessions of Messrs. Pirages on a copy of Francis Turner's "Golden Treasury of the Best Songs and Lyrical Poems in the English Language" (London, 1867), the binding wrongly dated "ca. 1867." As we learn from the description of a Ramage binding at the National Library of New Zealand: "John Ramage was born in London in 1836. When Ramage came out of his apprenticeship in 1856, he took the unusual step for an English binder of going to Paris and working under Lortic, one of the leading French binders of the day. In 1860 Ramage returned to Britain and purchased the Edinburgh business of Alexander Banks Jr, stating in the 1861 census returns that he employed 8 men, 3 boys, 6 women and 1 girl. Three years later he moved his business to London, where there was more work. He moved to larger premises in Warwick Lane in 1870, and from there he went to Warwick Square and in 1891 to Creed Lane. After his death in 1911, W.D. and N.M. Ramage, whose names appear in the London Directory for 1918, continued the work of the firm, disappearing after 1929, presumably victims of the slump following the stock market crash in New York that year. The firm reproduced the styles of the past, but was also capable of producing outstanding original designs" (as shown here).

London: John Lane: The Bodley Head Limited, [1927] - Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v [vi-viii] ix-li [lii] [1-2] 3-223 [224: blank] 1-4: ads, original decorated olive-green cloth, front panel stamped in blind and gold, spine panel stamped in gold, top edge stained olive-green, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. First edition. The author's third and last collection of weird fiction, this one dedicated to Maurice Baring. It includes "Tanhuser and the Gods," one of the finest humorous fantasies, "Winthrop's Adventure," "The Virgin of the Seven Daggers," and two others, as well as a long, interesting introduction on the sources for the stories. Lee's weird fiction earned the praise of Montague Summers, who equated her talent to that of M. R. James. "Lee's stories are really in a category by themselves. Intelligent, amusingly ironic, imaginative, original, they deserve more than the passing attention that they have attracted." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, pp. 256-57. "Marsyas in Flanders" is a "fine antiquarian tale but too early to have been directly influenced by M. R. James (it was written in 1900)." - Pardoe, The James Gang, p. 11. Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction, p. 114. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 2-48. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 991. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 3-141. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 326. Bleiler (1978), p. 121. Reginald 08777. NCBEL III 1445. Binding a bit warped, top edge stain faded, fore-edge of text block foxed, a bright, nearly fine copy in nearly fine 3/6 printed dust jacket with small closed tear at upper spine end. (#152559) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
