Konvolut: Liebe. Tonio Kröger-Illustrator Erich M. Simon u.

[Medaon. Magazin für jüdisches Leben und Forschung.] - In \"Die Reklame. Born 12 April 1892 in Kolberg (now Kolobrzeg, Poland). Studied at the school attached to the museum of industrial arts, Berlin: a teacher was Emil Orlik. 1911, 1913: studied in Paris.

        Revolt in the Desert

New York: George H. Doran Company,, 1927. Quarto. Original blue cloth, brown leather spine label lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, dark blue endpapers. With the original blue-grey card slipcase. Coloured portrait frontispiece, 10 coloured plates, 7 black and white plates, one folding map at the end. First US edition, large paper issue of 250 copies (this copy unnumbered). The costs for production of the 1926 Seven Pillars of Wisdom had ballooned to such an extent that Lawrence was contemplating selling either his library or some of his property to clear the debt. Eventually he settled on the publication of an abridgement, undertaken in 1926 by Lawrence himself with the help of some of his fellow servicemen, an earlier attempt by Edward Garnett having been set aside. Published in March 1927 in Great Britain and America, in both limited and trade issues, three impressions were soon sold out and two more quickly added.

        FIESTA [THE SUN ALSO RISES]

London: Jonathan Cape, 1927. The First Printing of the First U.K. edition of Hemingway's first novel, published in America as THE SUN ALSO RISES. 8vo, publisher's original medium blue cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine, now with a perfect jacket in facsimile of the original added, and housed in folding blue cloth clamshell box, the back gilt lettered. 286. A very pleasing copy, the text clean and fresh, the cloth with some mellowing at the spine panel and edges but all in all, a copy with very little wear, hinges strong and tight. Hemingway's first novel, published in America the year before as THE SUN ALSO RISES but this IS the Very scarce FIRST UK edition. An early and enduring modernist novel, Hemingway biographer Jeffrey Meyers writes that it is "recognized as Hemingway's greatest work" and Hemingway scholar Linda Wagner-Martin calls it his most important novel. The story of a group of American and British expats who travel from Paris to Pamplona for the running of the bulls. Hemingway describes "a Lost Generation", considered irretrievably damaged by World War I, as resilient and strong. While doing so he also investigates the themes of love, death, renewal in nature, and the meaning of masculinity.

The Chester Play of the Deluge.[two editions, with unique and very rare added material]

      - Waltham, St. Lawrence: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1927 [and] London: Clover Hill Editions, 1977. 2 vols plus extra material: 4to, iv, 16, (1, colophon)pp. With 10 large wood engravings by David Jones. Original red buckram, pale blue dust-jacket partially faded to almost white as usual, with a second unfaded dust-jacket also present; both with David Jones wood engraving on upper panel. A very fine copy. [and] 4to,ix, 30, (5)pp. With 10 large wood engravings by David Jones. Original cloth-backed marbled boards, orange dust-jacket, as new with three prospectuses (one limited to 50 copies) and the extra suite of prints on Japon limited to 25 sets (see below). A fascinating pair of copies of this very rare and important book, considered to be Jones's most important work and one of the great books of both Presses. The first edition was limited to 275 copies on English handmade paper. With this copy comes a full-page typed letter from Robert Gibbings to the purchaser Henry Bergen dated Dec. 31st 1927, clearly responding to criticism from Bergen about the printing of the blocks. Gibbings lays the blame squarely on Jones: "though David Jones is an excellent artist he is not a first-rate craftsman and his blocks are most terribly difficult to print. He himself is also very disappointed with the result." Gibbings goes on to mention technical aspects of the printing, paper dampening, etc. which caused problems. This archive reveals more than has ever been know about the problems with printing this book, long recognised as a masterpiece: "In the opinion of some, the engravings in this book are the greatest achievement of the Press . "In the Clover Hill reissue of 1977, limited to 250 copies using the original blocks, Cleverdon notes that the earlier (first) printing was on undampened paper because of time constraints, which was not Jones's fault. Jones was so disappointed that he took back the blocks so he could control any later use of them, which led fifty years later to this Cleverdon edition which is far superior in fineness of impression etc. and of course directly contradicts what Gibbings had said.To have both editions with all the extra material together at the same time is unparalleled and offers a unique opportunity to study and exhibit Jones's great masterpiece as published and as the artist wanted it to be seen. Spine slightly darkened, otherwise a very good copy. The footnote to Chanticleer 53 reads: "Whether or not of a progressive format, this is a very beautiful book".         Revolt in the Desert.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1927. Quarto. Original brown quarter pigskin, gilt lettered spine, sand-coloured buckram sides, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Coloured portrait frontispiece, 10 coloured plates, 8 black and white plates, one folding map at the end. Spine of price-clipped jacket slightly toned, hint of foxing to fore-edge. An excellent copy, largely unopened. First edition, large paper issue, number 8 of a limited edition of 315 numbered copies. The profits from this publication made the fortunes of the Cape publishing house. This large paper issue is a superbly produced book in terms of binding, quality of paper used and presswork.

The Chester Play of the Deluge.[two editions, with unique and very rare added material]

Waltham, St. A fascinating pair of copies of this very rare and important book, considered to be Jones?s most important work and one of the great books of both Presses. The first edition was limited to 275 copies on English handmade paper. With this copy comes a full-page typed letter from Robert Gibbings to the purchaser Henry Bergen dated Dec. 31st 1927, clearly responding to criticism from Bergen about the printing of the blocks. Gibbings lays the blame squarely on Jones: ?though David Jones is an excellent artist he is not a first-rate craftsman and his blocks are most terribly difficult to print... He himself is also very disappointed with the result...? Gibbings goes on to mention technical aspects of the printing, paper dampening, etc. which caused problems. This archive reveals more than has ever been know about the problems with printing this book, long recognised as a masterpiece: "In the opinion of some, the engravings in this book are the greatest achievement of the Press ... " In the Clover Hill reissue of 1977, limited to 250 copies using the original blocks, Cleverdon notes that the earlier (first) printing was on undampened paper because of time constraints, which was not Jones?s fault. Jones was so disappointed that he took back the blocks so he could control any later use of them, which led fifty years later to this Cleverdon edition which is far superior in fineness of impression etc. and of course directly contradicts what Gibbings had said. To have both editions with all the extra material together at the same time is unparalleled and offers a unique opportunity to study and exhibit Jones?s great masterpiece as published and as the artist wanted it to be seen.
