The World Crisis, 1916-1918, Volumes I & II, in the original dust jackets and publisher's slipcase

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1927 - This rarity is a jacketed U.S. first edition set of the 1916-1918 volumes of Churchill's The World Crisis in the original publisher's slipcase. The events of these 1916-1918 volumes include Churchill's time at the Front following his political exile and his subsequent return to the Cabinet. This set features strikingly fine volumes in near fine dust jackets in a slipcase that is missing the blank top panel. The bindings and contents of the two volumes are pristine as only unread sets that have spent life jacketed and slipcased can be. The jackets are complete, with no loss or tears. The jacket spines are mildly stained and toned, but nonetheless present quite well on the shelf. Of interest, the verso of the Volume I rear dust jacket flap bears original bookseller pencil notation, including "5 May 1927 | J. W. Robinson Co | $10.00". The note is dated just two months after publication, mirroring the original publisher’s price on the front flap. Moreover, the bookseller notation matches the sole previous ownership mark we find in the volumes – small bookseller stickers of "J. W. Robinson Co" affixed to each upper rear pastedown, each with the printed price "$10.00 | 2 VOLS" The dust jackets are protected beneath removable, archival quality clear covers. The slipcase surprisingly clean and presentable, with only modest wear and soiling. The missing blank upper slipcase panel is a collector’s gain, causing us to offer the set at a considerably lower price than a fully intact slipcase would command. The World Crisis is Winston Churchill's epic history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role, nearly losing both his political career and his corporeal life in the process. Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his work far exceeds this purpose. Both the U.S. and British editions were originally published as six individual volumes between 1923 and 1931. The U.S. is the true first edition, as U.S. Volume I publication preceded the British. Today, jacketed first editions are quite scarce - jacketed U.S. editions even more so. Scarcer still is the original U.S. publisher's slipcase for the 1916-1918 first editions; Charles Scribner's Sons originally issued the two 1916-1918 volumes as a boxed set in a cardboard slipcase. Of the few surviving slipcases we have seen, some have three pasted labels. A large, 8.25 x 5.75 inch label printed dark red on ivory on the right side of the slipcase bears an extensive blurb about Churchill and the work. A smaller label on the upper spine of the slipcase, likewise printed dark red on ivory, measures 4 x 3.25 inches and bears the title, author, and publisher. A bright orange promotional label on the lower portion of the slipcase spine measuring 3.75 x 3 inches bears black ink print advertising Churchill's preceding World Crisis volumes. This slipcase lacks the third, orange, promotional label, possibly indicating an earlier issuance. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A69.1(III-1&2).a, Woods/ICS A31(aa), Langworth p.104.         Mein Kampf. Eine Abrechnung. [Vol. II: Die nationalsozialistische Bewegung].

Munich, Franz Eher, 1925-1927. - 8vo. Original full vellum, spines ruled and direct lettered gilt, top edge gilt. In the original card slipcases. Frontispiece photographic portrait of Hitler to volume I, with his handwritten signature; each volume further inscribed, signed and dated by Hitler, to Mathilde von Scheubner-Richter. Autograph note card signed by Hitler laid in. Pastedown to volume I with traces of tape offset from laid in card, short horizontal tear to frontispiece tissue guard; card slipcases lightly worn; in very good condition. First edition, copy number 94 of an "edition de luxe" (Prachtausgabe) of 500 copies, signed by the author, each volume further inscribed, signed and dated by Hitler, to the widow of Max Erwin von Scheubner-Richter, the only first-tier Nazi leader to die in the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, and whom Hitler later claimed to be "irreplaceable" (P. Balakian, The Burning Tigris, p. 407). Part I carries a printed dedication to Scheubner-Richter and the other fifteen men who died in the Putsch, making this copy the de facto dedication copy. This edition, issued simultaneously with the first edition, apparently from the same setting of type, is printed on better quality paper, has the portrait frontispiece signed by hand, and is in a full vellum binding as opposed to the cloth and boards binding of the regular edition. - An early member of the Nazi Party, von Scheubner-Richter had, together with Alfred Rosenberg, devised the plan to drive the German government to revolution through the Beer Hall Putsch. In an exchange of fire during the Putsch, he was shot in the lungs and died instantly, bringing down Hitler, who had linked arms with him, in his fall. While Hitler dislocated his shoulder, the bullets aimed in his direction passed over his head: thus, Scheubner-Richter, through his own death, very likely saved Hitler's life. - Volume I of the set carries a handwritten dedication to Scheubner-Richter's widow Mathilde: "Frau Dr. von Scheubner Richter zu Neujahr 1926 herzlichst zugeeignet / Adolf Hitler / München, den 31. Dez[ember] 1925." Volume II reads "Frau Dr. von Scheubner-Richter zum Weihnachtsfest herzlichst zugeeignet / Adolf Hitler / München, den 27. Dez[ember] 1927". Laid in is a small handwritten card from Hitler, dated 30 December 1923 from Landsberg: "Liebe gnädige Frau! Am Ende dieses für Sie so traurigen Jahrs, will ich Ihnen verehrte gnädige Frau auf's herzlichste nur wünschen Sie möchten im Neuen Jahr den herben Schmerz vergessen können der Sie und Uns Alle traf. Ich denke oft an Sie und an Ih[n] liebe gnädige Frau und verbleibe in herzlicher Dienstbarkeit Ihr sehr ergebener Adolf Hitler" (At the end of this very sad year for you, I send heartfelt hope that you will be able to forget the deep pain that you and we have all met . I think of you and him often . and remain, your cordial servant and very devoted, Adolf Hitler). - Written in jail following the Putsch, the importance of "Mein Kampf" cannot be understated. Not only was it the origin and strength of the National Socialist programme transforming Hitler's status from a seedy local agitator to a potential national saviour in process, but more importantly caused a major turning point in the 20th century by setting the seeds for the most destructive war ever fought. Almost 40 when he started writing it, Hitler had achieved virtually nothing, but the book constituted a turning point in his career. "Political creeds as the basis for new religions have usually spelt danger for humanity. When they are distilled from the half-baked prejudices harboured by the more reactionary section of a nation not particularly noted for political enlightenment, they spell disaster" (PMM). In November 1923, Hitler was arrested after an unsuccessful Nazi putsch in Berlin. When he said, later, that this defeat was the greatest stroke of luck he ever had, he meant that without it he could not have made himself into a popular hero. The trial became a social event, with photographers waiting o [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

A War Record of the 21st London Regiment Surrey (First Surrey Rifles) 1914-1919

H.B. Skinner London, 1927 - First edition in the original green cloth, with silver regimental crest to the front board. A phenomenal copy with huge historical interest, signed by Winston Churchill and a number of generals and figures of authority to the title page. Signatures include Field Marshall Montgomery of Alamein, Field Marshall Allenby, Chief Scout Baden-Powell, Field Marshall Byng of Vimy, Field Marshall Claus W. Jacob, and General Herbert Gough of the Fifth Army among others. Also included is a hand written letter and original envelope by Minister Cornelius Greenway of the All Souls Universalist Church, to a Mr Craddock Jones, which adds interesting provenance. It reads: 'Dear Mr Craddock-Jones, I received your letter telling me all about your book with the signatures on the title page. I have the autographed photographs of everyone you mention and of all these gallant leaders a longhand letter, with the exception of your Prime Minister. He honoured me with his signed (?) only. Your patriotic spirit is very commendable and I am willing to help you, only I have all the signers in your book and only last year I made a contribution to the Lord Mayor of London for the (?) fund. If you send the book registered mail, and when I receive it I will mail you $500.00 I am doing this to help you as I have all the signers. This all for England's sake, and I am willing to help all I can - we are the complaints of democracy! Sincerely, Cornelius Greenaway'. The letter is undated, but 'Replied 8/11/41' is written presumably in Craddock-Jones hand to the top left hand corner. Cornelius was a huge collector of autographs, manuscripts, autographed photographs and first editions, and rumoured to have more than 6000 including big names such as President Washington, Jefferson, Stalin, Albert Einstein and Hitler among others. He served as a Corporal in the Army in WW1. Binding has minor rubbing to the spine ends and corners, and a small nick to the cloth towards the base of the spine otherwise in very good condition. Contents clean and bright, 277pp. A scarce title in it's own right, incredible featuring so many generals signatures, and a real point of historical and militarial interest.  [Attributes: Hard Cover]

New York: Grosset & Dunlap,, [1927]. Octavo. Original orange cloth, titles to spine and front board in black. With the dust jacket. Spine ends slightly creased. Otherwise a fine copy with the bright jacket, spine ends slightly creased and nicked. This New York edition of Stoker's classic was produced to cash in on the success of the stage play. Dracula was first adapted for the English stage by Hamilton Deane in 1924, the adaptation being authorized by Stoker's widow. Deane had originally intended to play the title role himself, but in the event opted for the role of Van Helsing. This production toured England for three years before settling in London. In 1927 the play was brought to Broadway by Horace Liveright, who hired John L. Balderston to revise the script for American audiences. The American production starred Bela Lugosi in his first major English-speaking role, with Edward Van Sloan as Van Helsing; both actors reprised their roles in the 1931 film version, which drew on the Deane–Balderston play. The rear flap of dust jacket has printed instructions to "Preserve this wrapper for future reference", and a list of Grosset and Dunlap publications on the verso, indicating that by this date printed dust jackets were no longer treated as disposable wrappers to be discarded before sale.

The Tibetan Book of the Dead: or, The After-Death Experiences on the Bardo Plane, according to Lāma Kazi Dawa-Samdup’s English Rendering

London: Oxford University Press, 1927. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First English language edition, first printing. xliv, 248pp. Original green cloth with gilt lettering, gilt topstain. Dulled spine lettering and spine cloth slightly sunned, else Near Fine with former owners's name written on paste down. Lacking jacket. A very nice copy of Evans-Wentz's translation of the Tibetan Buddhist text the Bardo Thodol. Its title was invented by the translator due to the book's similarities with the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead. (That title, coincidentally, was also a total invention of its first modern translator, Karl Richard Lepsius. So apparently many civilizations have a book about the dead but none actually has one called The Book of the Dead. Go figure.)
