New York: Grosset & Dunlap,, [1927]. Octavo. Original orange cloth, titles to spine and front board in black. With the dust jacket. Spine ends slightly creased. Otherwise a fine copy with the bright jacket, spine ends slightly creased and nicked. This New York edition of Stoker's classic was produced to cash in on the success of the stage play. Dracula was first adapted for the English stage by Hamilton Deane in 1924, the adaptation being authorized by Stoker's widow. Deane had originally intended to play the title role himself, but in the event opted for the role of Van Helsing. This production toured England for three years before settling in London. In 1927 the play was brought to Broadway by Horace Liveright, who hired John L. Balderston to revise the script for American audiences. The American production starred Bela Lugosi in his first major English-speaking role, with Edward Van Sloan as Van Helsing; both actors reprised their roles in the 1931 film version, which drew on the Deane–Balderston play. The rear flap of dust jacket has printed instructions to "Preserve this wrapper for future reference", and a list of Grosset and Dunlap publications on the verso, indicating that by this date printed dust jackets were no longer treated as disposable wrappers to be discarded before sale.

The Tibetan Book of the Dead: or, The After-Death Experiences on the Bardo Plane, according to Lāma Kazi Dawa-Samdup’s English Rendering

London: Oxford University Press, 1927. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First English language edition, first printing. xliv, 248pp. Original green cloth with gilt lettering, gilt topstain. Dulled spine lettering and spine cloth slightly sunned, else Near Fine with former owners's name written on paste down. Lacking jacket. A very nice copy of Evans-Wentz's translation of the Tibetan Buddhist text the Bardo Thodol. Its title was invented by the translator due to the book's similarities with the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead. (That title, coincidentally, was also a total invention of its first modern translator, Karl Richard Lepsius. So apparently many civilizations have a book about the dead but none actually has one called The Book of the Dead. Go figure.)

Complete Run of the Sherlock Holmes Stories, As Well as 2 Complete Novels, in the Individual Strand Magazines

Strand, London and New York 1927 - 75 vols. 1st appearances anywhere, in the original monthly parts, of all 56 stories and both of the novels (The Adventures, The Memoirs, Hound of the Baskervilles, The Return, Valley of Fear, His Last Bow, and The Casebook), being every Holmes story that Doyle ever wrote, and the 2 novels published serially in these magazines (only A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four were not published in the Strands). All are the "London and NY" issues except The Hound which is imprinted "NY and London." Half the spines faded, some chips, tears, and strengthening, else very good, and most crucially, it's all here, and rarer than a football player blaming God for a defeat, and it's quite a beguiling time capsule of wide ranging content, fashion, illustration and advertising. The first modern media spectacle, and the model for all that followed, exploded when these Strands were issued. After the first 2 or 3 stories, unprecedented buzz generated long queues, stretching for blocks, at newsstands on the day of the months that each was published. Yet, despite those sales, sets in wrappers are now of the utmost rarity, but in reverse of their chronology. The Adventures and The Memoirs are seen occasionally, and sets of them are 100 times rarer in wrappers than when they've been rebound, or in the annual Strand collected clothbound form that is so often seen, or even the later cloth 1st editions. The Hound is 5 times scarcer again than The Adventures or Memoirs and the same proportions hold true for its relative scarcity over the bound Strands or the clothbound 1st edition. Then it gets crazy. Complete sets of The Return and Valley of Fear, in wrappers, are rare, and significantly less obtainable than their predecessors, and complete runs of His Last Bow and The Casebook, might as well be impossible. In fact, hopes for finding any of the last 4 in wrappers, complete with all their covers, other contents and ads, belong in the morgue, as few booksellers, collectors or librarians, have ever seen a single set of them for sale, at any price, in any condition. Sherlock Holmes is the most durable, and most famous, character in the entire landscape of literature, and the stories are sheer stardust, the morphine drip of impeccably contrived, mind expanding detective fiction, and the most often imitated, parodied and adapted works in the English language. Rear board slightly bowed, spine a little toned, minor rubbing to tips; an excellent copy. First edition, fourth impression. A beautiful "Kelliegram" style binding of Shepard's richly illustrated edition, first published in 1926. Everybody's Pepys was the first in a series of three editions of English author's works illustrated by Shepard; it was followed by Everybody's Boswell in 1930 and Everybody's Lamb in 1933. The "Kelliegram" binding was one of the many innovations of English commercial binding firm Kelly & Sons. The Kelly family had one of the longest connections in the history of the binding trade in London, having been founded in 1770 by John Kellie (as the name was then spelled), and carried on by successive members of the family into the 1930s.
