8vo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, boards ornamented in gilt and blind, all edges gilt; pp. vii, 217; front endpapers removed in the 1920s when two manuscript notes were tipped in, the first from R. H. Isherwood, librarian of the Lancashire Author's Association, expressing gratitude to a Mr. J. Howard Hall for supplying information regarding the authorship of the work; the second from Dr. Henry Brierley, dated 1927, confirming Staley as the author and providing a brief account of her 'eccentric' personality. Very rare privately printed sole edition of this provincially published travelogue by Finetta Staley of Rochdale, of whom little is known. Published for private circulation, in aid of the Rochdale relief fund, the work recounts Staley's luxurious tour of Western Europe; including a stay at Chamonix, Mont Blanc and a trip taken by her husband to the Mer de Glace 'using hands as well as feet' (p. 189). COPAC records copies at only three locations, BL, NLS and Oxford.

        The Letters of Gertrude Bell

London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1927. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Near fine/Very good. 2 volumes. Small 4to. Illustrated with photographs of Gertrude from childhood and, later, with photographs taken by Bell herself. And with a large folding map of Persia in the second volume. Publisher's blue cloth, gilt spine titles. Traces of foxing and soil of the edges of the text block, and some sunning of the cloth along the top else these are fine copies. In the scarce dustwrappers. Volume one shows a Bell photograph of H. M., King Faisal of Iraq (the country Bell was essentially responsible for establishing); volume two shows a Bell photograph of Auda, Chief of the Abu Tayi. The dustwrappers are soiled and have been strengthened with archival tape along the top of volume one and at the spine tips of both volumes, but they give a very good appearance. Gertrude Bell died in 1926 after a lifetime as a writer, traveler, spy, archeologist, cartographer, and founder of modern Iraq. Her stepmother, Lady Mary Bell (basically the only mother she ever knew), has gathered letters from her girlhood until the end of her life. Here you will find what a brilliant observer and writer she was and why she was able to exert such an influence in the politics of post World War I Arabia, and which earned her the popular title of "Queen of Arabia"

Alphabetically Arranged and Annotated with Biographical and Genealogical Notices. 4 volumes, octavo. An excellent, bright set. First edition of this extremely uncommon and indispensable reference work, containing over 7,000 records and much improved and expanded from its predecessor, Dodwell and Miles's Alphabetical List, which was published in 1838. There was an 18-year hiatus between the publication of the second and third volumes, and the dust jackets of the first two volumes state that the print-run was limited to 500 copies of each, of which 450 were for sale; the final two volumes were also issued in a limited edition, though the number of copies is not stated. We trace four complete sets in auction records in the last 50 years, with no recorded mention of the dust jackets. Hodson (c. 1883-1963) was an officer in the Indian Army.

        Pomes Penyeach

Paris: Shakespeare and Company,, 1927. Sextodecimo. Original green boards, covers lettered in green. Housed in a cream chemise. With the errata slip to the rear pastedown. A little chipping to backstrip, small ink splash to front cover, top edge of first blank torn off. A very good copy of this fragile work. First edition, first printing, a remarkable association copy, Hart Crane's copy, with his ownership signature to the first blank. "For most young modernists, Joyce, quite simply, was God, and Crane was the quintessential acolyte... Crane devoured all of Joyce's works – his letters home are filled with requests for newly published Joyceiana – and before his premature death in 1932, he toyed with writing a critical appraisal of his idol" (Horowitz). Joyce's works had a tremendous effect on Crane. He possessed a smuggled copy of Ulysses, which he deemed "easily the epic of the age. It is as great a thing as Goethe's Faust... He is the one above all others I should like to talk to" (17 July 1922). Crane was also deeply moved by A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, which he called "spiritually the most inspiring book I have ever read" (Lewis, p. 18). There is no record of the two men meeting in person, but the poetic association is nonetheless compelling.

        Henrietta Szold

November 16, 1927. Autograph letter signed <I>"Henrietta Szold"</I>, two separate pages, 4½" x 7", on stationary <I>"On Board the Cunard R.M.S. Carmania"</I>, November 16, 1927, addressed to Elisha Friedman, a member of the American Economic Committee for Palestine, on the Board of the American Friends of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and on the Finance Committee of the Palestine Endowment Funds and the Hadassah Medical Organization. Fine and attractive.<br /><br />Szold writes: <I>"If my efforts to meet the situation in Palestine will be crowned with as great success as yours to give one pleasure and encouragement, my most sanguine hopes will be fulfilled. Many, many thanks for the basket of flowers, which gave pleasure not only to me but to the whole ship's company in the dining salon. I can't recall whether I told you that Dr. Berkam is with me in the capacity of my personal advisor on educational problems. The drastic cut of over one hundred thousand dollars in the Education budget has been particularly upsetting to me. No expert advice can possibly compensate for so deep a cut, but expert advice may at least introduce (?) in a constructive way. Dr. Berkham is on the boat with me and we are putting several hours each day on the problem, in the hope that we may be half-way prepared to meet it on the spot, if only in this department and in all of them we can secure the co-operation of the Yishub(?) Instead I fear it's distrust of an executive whose chief duty, as it has been proclaimed from the rooftops is to 'balance the budget', a curtailed budget at that. We shall see what we shall see – that is my fatalistic philosophy in the face of my huge task. …"</I><br /><br />In 1927, Szold was the first woman ever elected to the Zionist Congress's Executive Board in which she held the public health and education portfolios. The RMS Carmania was a British passenger liner of the Cunard Line, which at the time of this letter ran between Liverpool, Boston and New York. <br />

Munich, (1927): Albert Langen. Octavo. Second edition. Inscribed by Moholy-Nagy to [Galka] Scheyer; fürfrau Scheyer/ Moholy-Nagy soon became known as one of the most important artists of Constructivism. His varied works ranges from painting, photography, film, design and stage design to experiments with photograms which considerably influenced the development of light art and kinetic art. He joined the Bauhaus" in 1923 and contributed heavily to the design and production of the 14-book Bauhausbucher series, which documented the school's work and aims. The present copy is #8 of that series. In 1927, the Henry Art Gallery presented its first modern art exhibition presenting The Blue Four. Acquainted through various artist affiliations and the Bauhaus School in Weimar, Germany, the four artists and most likely Moholy-Nagy were introduced at that time to Galka Scheyer. Galka Scheyer, whose continuous efforts to promote the Blue Four which included Lyonel Feininger, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Alexej Jawlensky, widened the influence of European modernism in the United States. The Pasadena Art Institute and The Pasadena art museum hold several works by Galka Sheyer and Moholy-Nagy. 140pp., text in German, photographic illustrations, bound in original wraps with dust jacket printed in red and white(lacking rear panel with flap ends mounted to wrapper).         The World Crisis, 1916-1918, Volumes I & II, in the original dust jackets and publisher's slipcase

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1927. First U.S. edition, first printing. Hardcover. This rarity is a jacketed U.S. first edition set of the 1916-1918 volumes of Churchill's The World Crisis in the original publisher's slipcase. The events of these 1916-1918 volumes include Churchill's time at the Front following his political exile and his subsequent return to the Cabinet. This set features strikingly fine volumes in near fine dust jackets in a slipcase that is missing the blank top panel. The bindings and contents of the two volumes are pristine as only unread sets that have spent life jacketed and slipcased can be. The jackets are complete, with no loss or tears. The jacket spines are mildly stained and toned, but nonetheless present quite well on the shelf. Of interest, the verso of the Volume I rear dust jacket flap bears original bookseller pencil notation, including “5 May 1927 | J. W. Robinson Co | $10.00”. The note is dated just two months after publication, mirroring the original publisher's price on the front flap. Moreover, the bookseller notation matches the sole previous ownership mark we find in the volumes – small bookseller stickers of “J. W. Robinson Co” affixed to each upper rear pastedown, each with the printed price “$10.00 | 2 VOLS” The dust jackets are protected beneath removable, archival quality clear covers. The slipcase surprisingly clean and presentable, with only modest wear and soiling. The missing blank upper slipcase panel is a collector's gain, causing us to offer the set at a considerably lower price than a fully intact slipcase would command. The World Crisis is Winston Churchill's epic history of the First World War, in which he played such a critical, controversial, and varied role, nearly losing both his political career and his corporeal life in the process. Churchill was in a special position to write this history, having served both in the Cabinet and on the Front. First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 until 1915, after the failure in the Dardanelles and the slaughter at Gallipoli, Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. Before war's end, Churchill was exonerated and rejoined the Government, but the stigma would linger. Churchill may have meant for his history of the First World War to clear his name, but his work far exceeds this purpose. Both the U.S. and British editions were originally published as six individual volumes between 1923 and 1931. The U.S. is the true first edition, as U.S. Volume I publication preceded the British. Today, jacketed first editions are quite scarce - jacketed U.S. editions even more so. Scarcer still is the original U.S. publisher's slipcase for the 1916-1918 first editions; Charles Scribner's Sons originally issued the two 1916-1918 volumes as a boxed set in a cardboard slipcase. Of the few surviving slipcases we have seen, some have three pasted labels. A large, 8.25 x 5.75 inch label printed dark red on ivory on the right side of the slipcase bears an extensive blurb about Churchill and the work. A smaller label on the upper spine of the slipcase, likewise printed dark red on ivory, measures 4 x 3.25 inches and bears the title, author, and publisher. A bright orange promotional label on the lower portion of the slipcase spine measuring 3.75 x 3 inches bears black ink print advertising Churchill's preceding World Crisis volumes. This slipcase lacks the third, orange, promotional label, possibly indicating an earlier issuance. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A69.1(III-1&2).a, Woods/ICS A31(aa), Langworth p.104.
