"We." The Famous Flier's Own Story of His Life and his Transatlantic Flight

318 pp. Original cloth and dust jacket. Very good. FIRST EDITION. An important presentation copy inscribed and signed by Lindbergh on the portrait frontispiece to Donald E. Keyhoe. On May 20, 1927, Lindbergh left Roosevelt Field, New York in The Spirit of St. Louis. 33 ½ hours later he landed in Paris to a hero's welcome, completing the first solo flight across the Atlantic. This is Lindbergh's book on his great achievement. "We" in the title refers to Lindbergh and his plane. The naval aviator Donald Keyhoe, recipient of this presentation copy, managed Lindbergh's triumphant 48-state tour after the Atlantic crossing. Keyhoe had been a Navy pilot of both balloons and airplanes and in later years was a successful author and test pilot, as well as a leading early authority on UFOs. Keyhoe has signed and inscribed this book. Although signed copies of this book are not uncommon, presentation copies of this quality and interest are rare.

Three original ink and watercolour drawings of Duncan by the American modernist artist Abraham Walkowitz

"[Duncan's] insistence on dancing to concert music paralleled her belief that dance was an art capable of expressing the highest aspirations of the soul. She admired the integration of dance in ancient Greek ritual and theater, and took inspiration from Greek sculpture. The simplicity of her costumes, which were based on Greek tunics, was matched by the unadorned curtains she used as her stage setting. She wished to reinstate in dance the sense of naturalness she perceived in the ancient Greeks and showed that simple movements such as walking, running, and skipping could be used as expressive components of the dancer's movement vocabulary. Although her work is generally regarded as a precursor of modern dance, Duncan also influenced ballet choreographers such as Michel Fokine, particularly in introducing a freer, more fluid use of the torso, untrammeled by the corset that was then a part of the ballerina's uniform. Her simplicity and naturalness seemed radical to audiences accustomed to the visual and choreographic extravagances of the ballet... Her name has evoked a daring, unfettered spirit, and her willingness to defy convention blazed a path for the dancers and choreographers who followed her." Susan Au in Grove Music Online. Walkowitz was born in Tyumen, Siberia to Jewish parents... He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City and the Académie Julian in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens. Walkowitz and his contemporaries later gravitated around photographer Alfred Stieglitz's 291 Gallery, originally titled the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession, where the forerunners of modern art in America gathered and where many European artists were first exhibited in the United States... Walkowitz's dedication to Duncan as a subject extended well past her untimely death in 1927. The works reveal shared convictions toward modernism and breaking links with the past. In 1958, Walkowitz told Lerner, "She (Duncan) had no laws. She did not dance according to the rules. She created. Her body was music. It was a body electric, like Walt Whitman... While never attaining the same level of fame as his contemporaries, Walkowitz' close relationship with the 291 Gallery and Alfred Stieglitz placed him at the center of the modernist movement. His early abstract cityscapes and collection of over 5,000 drawings of Isadora Duncan also remain significant art historical records." Wikipedia.. Each drawing ca. 170 x 165 mm. All signed by the artist ("A Walkowitz") in ink at lower portion of sheet. Slightly worn, browned, and stained; remnants of mounting adhesive to verso.

        Now We Are Six

A Beautiful First edition copy of the third instalment of Milne's classic winnie the pooh series and a rare find in this condition. Published by Methuen, London; 1927. This lovely book is in Near Fine condition. It is tightly bound in original red boards, with gold gilt detailing to the front and lettering to the spine. There is some bumping to the corners and spine ends, with some minor loss to the base of the spine, but apart from this and a slight darkening to the spine, the boards are in very nice condition. Internally, the pages are clean and bright and free from blemishes or damage. There is only the slightest hint of toning or age spottingto the page edges and the book is in very smart condition. Provenance: There is a neat gift inscription to the top right corner of the title page dated 1927. The dust jacket is in Near Fine condition, with just some minor chipping to the edges and corners, particularly the spine ends. There are just a couple of slight marks, and a darkening to the spine from sitting on a bookshelf, but the panels retain some of their lovely original colour and the jacket is bright and smart. A lovely copy of this first edition and an ideal book to invest in!

Art Notes Bound issues 1-85 complete

1927. Softbound. Covers are poor. Contents are VG+. 7 Volumes bound in crumbling thin flexible leather. Profusely illustrated in bw. All edges are gilt. This stunning ensemble includes the issues of Art Notes bound as follows: 1-12, 13-24, 25-36, 37-48, 49-60, 61-73, 74-85. These small publications from Macbeth Gallery in New York are incredibly scarce. Macbeth Gallery was the pre-eminent dealer for American Art in NYC beginning in the 1890s. They published these small booklets to both promote their stock and to educate their customers. They are filled with anecdotal and ephemeral information that will not be found elsewhere. In 23 years, this is the first set of these I have had, and likely the last I will see.

Illustrated with photographs of Gertrude from childhood and, later, with photographs taken by Bell herself. And with a large folding map of Persia in the second volume. Her stepmother, Lady Mary Bell (basically the only mother she ever knew), has gathered letters from her girlhood until the end of her life.         Pomes Penyeach

Paris: Shakespeare and Company,, 1927. Sextodecimo. Original green boards, covers lettered in green. Housed in a cream chemise. With the errata slip to the rear pastedown. A little chipping to backstrip, small ink splash to front cover, top edge of first blank torn off. A very good copy of this fragile work. First edition, first printing, a remarkable association copy, Hart Crane's copy, with his ownership signature to the first blank. "For most young modernists, Joyce, quite simply, was God, and Crane was the quintessential acolyte... Crane devoured all of Joyce's works – his letters home are filled with requests for newly published Joyceiana – and before his premature death in 1932, he toyed with writing a critical appraisal of his idol" (Horowitz). Joyce's works had a tremendous effect on Crane. He possessed a smuggled copy of Ulysses, which he deemed "easily the epic of the age. It is as great a thing as Goethe's Faust... He is the one above all others I should like to talk to" (17 July 1922). Crane was also deeply moved by A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, which he called "spiritually the most inspiring book I have ever read" (Lewis, p. 18). There is no record of the two men meeting in person, but the poetic association is nonetheless compelling.

        Henrietta Szold

November 16, 1927. Autograph letter signed <I>"Henrietta Szold"</I>, two separate pages, 4½" x 7", on stationary <I>"On Board the Cunard R.M.S. Carmania"</I>, November 16, 1927, addressed to Elisha Friedman, a member of the American Economic Committee for Palestine, on the Board of the American Friends of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and on the Finance Committee of the Palestine Endowment Funds and the Hadassah Medical Organization. Fine and attractive.<br /><br />Szold writes: <I>"If my efforts to meet the situation in Palestine will be crowned with as great success as yours to give one pleasure and encouragement, my most sanguine hopes will be fulfilled. Many, many thanks for the basket of flowers, which gave pleasure not only to me but to the whole ship's company in the dining salon. I can't recall whether I told you that Dr. Berkam is with me in the capacity of my personal advisor on educational problems. The drastic cut of over one hundred thousand dollars in the Education budget has been particularly upsetting to me. No expert advice can possibly compensate for so deep a cut, but expert advice may at least introduce (?) in a constructive way. Dr. Berkham is on the boat with me and we are putting several hours each day on the problem, in the hope that we may be half-way prepared to meet it on the spot, if only in this department and in all of them we can secure the co-operation of the Yishub(?) Instead I fear it's distrust of an executive whose chief duty, as it has been proclaimed from the rooftops is to 'balance the budget', a curtailed budget at that. We shall see what we shall see – that is my fatalistic philosophy in the face of my huge task. …"</I><br /><br />In 1927, Szold was the first woman ever elected to the Zionist Congress's Executive Board in which she held the public health and education portfolios. The RMS Carmania was a British passenger liner of the Cunard Line, which at the time of this letter ran between Liverpool, Boston and New York. <br />

        Treasure Island,

London Ernest Benn Ltd 1927 - Small 4to., one of only 50 copies signed by the artist, colour frontispiece, 11 plates and numerous black & white decorations and illustrations by the artist, a little light foxing, publisher's vellum with morocco spine label, t.e.g., slight bowing as usual, but otherwise a very good copy. A very rare deluxe Dulac edition, considerably at odds stylistically with the more well-known Edwardian and Inter-War deluxe editions produced by Hodder & Stoughton et al. Writing of this work in his bibliography of the artist, Ann Conolly Hughey states that the watercolours ".show a new Dulac style. The detailing and design of the pictures present some of Dulac's most careful and superb painting. He himself liked these illustrations best of all his work." [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Malerei, Fotografie, Film. [Painting Photography Film] in Bauhausbuecher No 8:

Munich, (1927): Albert Langen. Octavo. Second edition. Inscribed by Moholy-Nagy to [Galka] Scheyer; fürfrau Scheyer/ Moholy-Nagy soon became known as one of the most important artists of Constructivism. His varied works ranges from painting, photography, film, design and stage design to experiments with photograms which considerably influenced the development of light art and kinetic art. He joined the Bauhaus" in 1923 and contributed heavily to the design and production of the 14-book Bauhausbucher series, which documented the school's work and aims. The present copy is #8 of that series. In 1927, the Henry Art Gallery presented its first modern art exhibition presenting The Blue Four. Acquainted through various artist affiliations and the Bauhaus School in Weimar, Germany, the four artists and most likely Moholy-Nagy were introduced at that time to Galka Scheyer. Galka Scheyer, whose continuous efforts to promote the Blue Four which included Lyonel Feininger, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Alexej Jawlensky, widened the influence of European modernism in the United States. The Pasadena Art Institute and The Pasadena art museum hold several works by Galka Sheyer and Moholy-Nagy. 140pp., text in German, photographic illustrations, bound in original wraps with dust jacket printed in red and white(lacking rear panel with flap ends mounted to wrapper). Some restoration to spine, two corners chipped. An uncommon item with an important provenance.
